In Laughter Yoga, we have a motto, “Fake it till you make it.”
We do laughter exercises until real laughter kicks in.
With movement and eye contact, laughter can easily be contagious.
It’s great when that happens.
However, it isn’t necessary.
We flood the body with feel good hormones either way.
Just moving the diaphragm up and down for an extended period generates the “feel good” hormones.
That extended period is about 10-15 minutes.
An added benefit: it is not possible for stress hormones to co-exist in the body with the feel good hormones.
They are mutually exclusive.
So…faking laughter can release stress in our bodies.
Does this have application in other areas of life?
How about this?
When I REALLY don’t feel loving, can I fake it till I make it?
Why don’t I pretend that I am loving?
After all, that is what actors do all the time.
I can choose to consider myself an actor and do what a loving person would do.
Show kindness and consideration. Extend good feelings to those around me.
One wonders if doing that for 10-15 minutes might have the same effect as faking laughter for 15 minutes.
Might that release stress in my body as well?
Remember, it doesn’t have to be real laughter to release stress.
Perhaps extending kindness and consideration can to the same.
You gotta ask yourself, is this worth trying out?
