A rainy summer Sunday afternoon.

 

Great moment to head over to the rec centre and sit in a sauna.

 

Only to be met by a sign:

Sauna closed.

We are waiting for parts.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

 

How would you respond?

 

In the past, I would have been quite upset. Cue the internal rant and rave…Kicking myself for not phoning to check first.

 

So, it was with a pleasant surprise that I noted my response these days.

 

Well, well. Ok, so what is Plan B?

 

Drive for ten more minutes to another rec centre?

 

Go back home and have a bath instead?

 

I noted my internal calm.

 

Something has happened. I think it is mostly from my Laughter Yoga experience.

 

You know the saying: “Someday we’ll look back on this and laugh?”

 

If so, why not laugh now?

 

Because of a decade plus of laughing daily for 10-15 minutes, I don’t seem to need to laugh to let go of this kind of disappointment.

 

Somehow, I no longer even view it as a disappointment.

 

Most interestingly, it is just an inner smile that responds to the event.

 

Byron Katie says it is “loving what is.”

 

I am so grateful to Dr. Madan Kataria for creating Laughter Yoga in 1995.

 

Laughter Yoga is what has enabled this sense of calm. The calm that remains when “life throws a dare” as Dr. K. would say.

 

I ended up at home soaking in a bath.

 

It wasn’t my first preference. But it was still lovely.

Medical Medium: Cure for Everything? Mastery Newsletter July 9, 2019

“Let food be thy medicine.” Who said that?

 

Does is make common sense?

 

Food is what fuels us, after all.

 

Why do we need anything else to be healthy?

 

Yet, we have epidemics of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and many more conditions. Why?

 

Do you think we have veered off the path somehow? Have we, over time, moved away from what is really healthy food?

Could that be a reason or even THE reason we are so ill as a society?

 

Anthony William thinks so.

 

He is the author of the Medical Medium series of books.

 

He thinks we can get back to vibrant health by getting back to eating well or eating better than we may be right now.

 

His protocol?

 

Lots of fruit.

 

Lots of vegetables.

 

Specific herbs and spices, and

Wild foods.

 

Also he says to cut out specific foods that cause inflammation and illness.

He also is huge on celery juice.

 

16 ounces of celery juice on an empty stomach first thing in the morning.

 

Followed by nothing but fruit until lunch.

 

This, he says, allows the body to begin cleansing some of the toxins we may have built up over decades.

 

Speaking of which…

 

One of the main culprits is…Epstein-Barr virus.

 

William claims there are 60 strains of this virus, not the 2 or 3 that the medical system has identified.

 

He says this is a major culprit in all of our dis-eases.

 

Ridding ourselves of this virus is one of his keys to regaining our health.

 

Foods That Make Life Challenging.

 

William does not say never to eat these foods. Just that until we cleanse out the toxins, these specific foods can prevent us getting well.

 

Once cleansed, we may be able to re-introduce them in the diet.

 

Dairy, eggs, corn, wheat, canola oil, and…

 

“Natural flavours.” What a tricky one that is.

 

He says that phrase is a way to hide the fact that the food contains MSG!

 

Summing up:

Celery juice on an empty stomach in the morning.

 

Fruit, lots of it, and nothing else until lunch.

 

Vegetables galore at lunch and evening.

You and I make TERRIBLE DECISIONS AND

 

HAVE UNNECESSARY STRESS.

 

What? Why?

 

Because we suffer from:

 

AN OVERDRAMATIC WORLDVIEW.

 

This is according to the author of

 

Factfulness: 10 Reasons Why We’re Wrong About the World – and Why Things Are Better Than You Think

 

Hans Rosling was a Swedish medical doctor and international health researcher.

 

He would ask audiences simple questions about global trends.

 

Almost everyone got almost every question wrong.

 

It did not matter if the audiences were made up of teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers.

 

No matter how intelligent, they still got the answers so wrong that chimpanzees did better on his quizzes.

 

He actually did that. Asked chimps.

 

The chimps, picking coded bananas, got more answers right than some of the most intelligent (and influential) policy makers in the world.

 

What that told Rosling is that policy makers were and are creating policies based on absolutely wrong information!!!

 

The solution?

 

Get a realistic, undramatic view of the world.

 

Thus reducing stress and enjoying life more in a world that is quite wonderful.

 

Hard to believe that the world is “quite wonderful?” and not “going to h*ll in a handbasket?”

 

Rosling’s son and daughter in law are co-authors of the book.

 

They define “Factfulness” as The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts.

“When asked simple questions about global trends―

 

what percentage of the world’s population live in poverty;

 

why the world’s population is increasing;

 

how many girls finish school―

 

we systematically get the answers wrong.

 

So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers.

 

Factfulness offers a radical new explanation of why this happens.

 

It reveals the ten instincts that distort our perspective―from our tendency to divide the world into two camps (usually some version of us and them) to the way we consume media (where fear rules) to how we perceive progress (believing that most things are getting worse).

“Decluttering Creates Abundance”   Mastery Newsletter July 2, 2019

Not because you sell your stuff for money (though you can do that as well)…

 

But because getting rid of “stuff” can shift us to a new mindset… A new way of thinking where happiness, joy and delighting in life is not dependent on “retail therapy.”

 

We live in a consumer society. There was a time when most folks would buy a new pair of pants when, and only when the old pair wore out.

 

Now, everyone must have the latest fashion.

 

Have you heard the definition of “fashion?” Something so awful you have to change it four times a year. Ha ha.)

 

The whole fashion industry feeds the consumers’ tastes so she or he must have the latest fad.

 

How does this relate to decluttering?

 

Here is how…

 

Who of us does not have some items that were not “high fashion” at some point and now makes the stomach turn?

 

The question is why have we not sold it, given it away or trashed it?

 

Could it be we are addicted to keeping stuff around because: “I might need it one day?”

 

Wiser heads than ours have commented that there is a sense of joy, a feeling of lightness without clutter.

 

Without closets jammed to the gills…without cupboard full of unused knick-knacks?

 

That sense or feeling can be thought of as a feeling of abundance. I suspect it is kind of a “Zen” thing.

 

Here are some tips and ideas from those who have gone before us in this decluttering process.

 

Operating Principle: If it is not useful or beautiful, what is it doing in your life?

 

Easy enough to say, the devil is in the details.

 

Especially if you have a spouse or Significant Other. They may see something as gorgeous that you think is hideous.

 

So…start with your own stuff.

 

Five Minutes a Day to Declutter

 

Most of these can be done in 5 minutes or so. If it is important to us, we can find five minutes almost any day.

 

1.Clothing Decluttering Experiment is a good place to start.

 

Oprah Winfrey made this one popular.

 

To identify wardrobe pieces to clear out, hang all your clothes with the hangers in the reverse direction.

 

After you wear an item, return it to the closet with the hanger facing the correct direction.

 

After six months, you’ll have a clear picture of which clothes you can easily discard.

 

This experiment could also be applied to a number of clutter areas in your home (cleaners, toys, linens, tools, hobbies and craft items). 5 minutes to set this up.

 

  1. Give away one thing a day.

 

Colleen Madsen at “365 Less Things” said this transformed her life: http://www.365lessthings.com  Less than 5 minutes for this one.

 

  1. Fill One Trash Bag.

 

Grab the bag. Race through the house and fill it up. Dump it. 5 to 10 minutes.

 

  1. Make list of places to declutter.

 

Dana Byers (http://www.danabyers.com ) says start with the easiest spot in the home first.

 

Sound hard? She adds this note, “When you’re done with one area, STOP.”

 

Pat yourself on the back. Take note of your progress.

 

Even a little dent in the clutter can motivate us to keep going.

 

The first spot may only take 5-10 minutes. The momentum can carry us to the next area.

 

  1. Change your perspective.

 

Here’s how: take photos of your house, invite over a toddler, or ask the boss to meet in your office.

 

These might cause you to see your home in a new light.

 

  1. Use your imagination.

 

Try asking yourself unique questions like, “If I was just buying this now, how much would I pay?”

 

These creative techniques may prove to be very helpful for some with difficulties removing unneeded clutter.

Get Plastics Out of Your Body. Mastery Newsletter June 6, 2019

You and I eat an average of 50,000 pieces of plastic a year.

 

This is from new research, published in the journal “Environmental Science and Technology.”

 

Lead researcher Keiran Cox from the University of Victoria in Canada says they only analyzed 15% of calorie intake.

 

That means the real figure is likely much higher.

 

 

We’re Not Designed For This

 

You and I know our bodies are not designed to deal with this mad made substance.

 

We are told the health impacts are unknown.

 

We don’t need rocket science to tell us this is not a good thing.

 

 

Bottle Water a Big Factor

 

One aspect of the research showed that those who get their water consumption from bottled water are far worse off.

 

From the Guardian article:

 

“A person who only drank bottled water would consume 130,000 particles per year from that source alone, the researchers said, compared with 4,000 from tap water.” (my italics and bolding)

 

 

Can We Do Something?

 

Other than staying away from bottled water and using less plastic containers, what else can we do?

 

Moving does not seem to be an option. A recent report on atmospheric plastic pollution showed high amounts in the air in the Pyrenees mountains straddling France and Spain.

 

We can’t escape ingesting plastic. It is in the air, the water and food sources as well.

 

Can we do something about eliminating it from our bodies.

 

 

The answer appears to be: Yes.

Laughter is a “Gateway Drug” Mastery Newsletter May 27, 2019

Caution: Extended periods of laughter can lead to other behaviour changes.

 

Full disclosure: I am a “Laughter Addict.”

 

I am writing this warn you about the dangers of getting hooked on laughter.

 

Oh, it seems safe enough to begin with.

 

Like other substances, it makes you feel good at first.

 

You have seen it yourself if ever you watched a really funny movie and laughed until tears streamed down your face…and your belly ached from so much laughter.

 

If felt good, didn’t it?

 

But be careful: too much exposure to laughter can lead you on to other activities. Activities you never expected.

 

Here is my cautionary tale.

 

Laughter, and here I mean extended periods of ten to fifteen minutes or more, can lead to more smiles on the face.

 

Those smiles can spread in the body and you may find a smile in the belly. Again this is disguised as a warm and fuzzy feel-good kind of thing.

 

Don’t be deceived, there is more to come, much more.

 

You can find yourself talking to strangers more and having fun doing it.

 

You can find that your breathing takes on a different tone entirely. That is, you may breathe deeper and more slowly.

 

This is so sneaky. Again, at first that may not seem too much to deal with.

 

But then, along with the smiling, the slower breathing, extended laughter can also cause you to feel heightened self esteem.

 

Now here is where it gets a little dangerous.

 

This new self esteem can cause you to take action that you would not have considered otherwise.

 

Actions that be dangerous to your view of the world.

 

As we know, the world is a dangerous place. What with war, famine, divisive politics, the environment going to heck in a handbasket…

 

This new self esteem can lead you to be more generous. Your generosity can cause you to feel that all is right with the world.

 

Can you see the pitfalls here?

 

Further, you may find yourself singing along to songs on the radio more.

 

Talk about distracted driving. We can’t have that kind of thing spreading.

 

You may be preparing breakfast and find yourself dancing to music. Oh my goodness, knives and dancing. What a recipe for disaster.

 

If you continue down this road, you may find that you no longer feel like there isn’t enough time for everything that needs doing.

 

Have to nip that in the bud! We know for sure that we have to keep moving faster and faster or else we will fall behind.

 

Now, I admit, there are some who can come to our Laughter Yoga sessions and not get addicted.

 

They just laugh for an hour for no reason and they are able to walk away from it before it catches fire in their souls.

 

But can you take the chance?

 

You may have an addictive personality and then where are you?

 

On the slippery slope to all those “side effects” of an extended laughter session.

 

So I urge you to reconsider if a so-called friend invites you to come with them to a Laughter Yoga class.

 

Just for your information, so you know exactly what times and places to avoid:

 

Laughter Yoga in Victoria, BC, Canada are held at Beacon Hill Park at 10.30 AM on Sundays during spring and summer.

 

If you must go to Beacon Hill Park, steer well clear of the sundial in the middle of the park.

 

Better yet, sleep in on Sundays to avoid any temptation.

 

Mondays at 4.30pm at the VIHA building across from Esquimalt Rec Centre. Take an alternate route home if you have to.

 

And for sure, stay well away from Willows Beach area on Wednesday nights at 7pm. Especially near the Tea Room.

 

Those are the places and times to avoid if you don’t want to get addicted to laughter.

 

Remember: laughter is addictive. And it is a gateway to numerous other activities that can change your view of life forever. It can alter your habits. It can make life seem to be better in many ways.

 

But we know that is not real. Life is dangerous and we have to be on guard at all times.

 

We have to be ready for fight or flight at all moments of the day.

 

On more thing. Extended laughter periods can also cause you to sleep more soundly.

 

And we know how dangerous that can be in this world. We can’t have that.

 

So take note from one who is fully addicted to laughter and has many of the side effects as well.

 

Stay well away. Unless you really are ready to have your world changed in a fundamental way.

Is there a simple formula/strategy to be happy?

What are the conditions that produce the hormones that are in play when we are happy?

This is one of the best explanations I have seen. Thanks to Durga Dass.

Durga is one of my Facebook Laughter Yoga friends..

“There are 4 Hormones which determine a human’s happiness.

Dear friends …

As I sat in the park after my morning walk, My wife came and slumped next to me.

  She had completed   her 30-minute jog.   We chatted   for a while. She said   she is not happy in life. I looked up at her sheer disbelief since she seemed to have the best of everything in life.

  “Why do you think so?” 

“I don’t know. Everyone tells I have everything needed, but I am not happy.

“Then I questioned myself, am I happy? “No,”   was my inner voice reply.

Now, that was an eye-opener for me.

I began my quest to understand the real cause of my unhappiness, I couldn’t find one.

I dug deeper, read articles, spoke to life coaches but nothing made sense.

  At last my doctor friend gave me the answer which put all my questions and doubts to rest.

  I implemented those and will say I am   a lot happier person.

She said, there are four hormones   which determine a   human’s happiness –

1.   Endorphins, 

2.   Dopamine, 

3.   Serotonin, 

and

4.   Oxytocin.

It is important we understand these hormones, as we need all four of them   to stay happy.

Let’s look at the first hormone the   Endorphins.

  When we exercise, the body releases Endorphins. 

This hormone helps the body cope with the pain of exercising. We then enjoy exercising because these Endorphins will make us happy.

  Laughter is another good way of   generating Endorphins. 

We need to spend 30 minutes exercising   every day, read or watch funny stuff   to get our day’s dose of Endorphins.

  The second hormone is Dopamine. 

In our journey of life, we accomplish many little and big tasks, it releases   various levels of Dopamine. 

  When we get appreciated for our work at the office or at home, we feel accomplished and good, that is because it releases Dopamine. 

This also explains why most housewives   are unhappy since they rarely get   acknowledged or appreciated for their work.   

Once, we join work, we buy a car, a house, the latest gadgets, a new house  and so forth. In each instance, it releases Dopamine and we become happy.

Now, do we realize why we become happy when we shop?

  The third hormone Serotonin is released when we act in a way that benefits others. 

When we transcend ourselves and give back to others or to nature or to the society, it releases Serotonin. Even, providing useful information on the internet like writing information   blogs, answering people’s questions on Quora or Facebook groups will generate Serotonin. 

That is because we will use our   precious time to help other people via our answers or articles.

  The final hormone is Oxytocin, 

is released when we become close to other human beings.

When we hug our friends or family   Oxytocin is released. 

The “Jadoo Ki Jhappi” from Munnabhai   does really work. 

Similarly, when we shake hands or put our arms around someone’s shoulders, various amounts of Oxytocin is released.

So, it is simple, we have to exercise every day to get Endorphins, we have to   accomplish little goals and get Dopamine, we need to be nice to others to get Serotonin and finally hug our kids, friends, and families to get Oxytocin and we will be happy.

  When we are happy, we can deal with our challenges and problems better.

Now, we can understand why we need to hug a child who has a bad mood. 

So to make your child more and more   happy day by day …

 1.  Motivate him to play   on the ground

  -Endorphins 

2.   Appreciate your child   for his small big achievements

  -Dopamine 

3.   inculcate sharing habit through you to your child

  -Serotonin 

4.   Hug your child

  -Oxytocin 

  Have a Happy Life.”

Getting Lost Hunting for Chocolate. Mastery Newsletter March 28, 2019

Should have gone straight instead of turning right…

A long winding road high above the Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Our rental car is being put through its paces.

We have to double back a couple of times. Ask directions and finally phone the chocolate farm.

Eventually, we find it.

Worth the effort.

Pamela and Bob Cooper are doing great work at Original Hawaiian Chocolate.

We were not disappointed as this is the smoothest 70% dark chocolate in living memory.

As with coffee we stocked up for the journey home. Especially with the criollo.

That is made from the rarest cacao bean on the planet.

The west coast of the Big Island continues to amaze.

We wanted to search further afield.

North from Kailua-Kona we travel up to 2500 feet from sea level…

Past solidified lava fields up to cowboy country.

Paniolos as they are called here have been rustling cows longer than the the cowboy of the American west.

Further north, we find it…the Hamakua Nut Factory.

No claim to any better a nut, but it was a great ride to get here…

Is Anger Ever Justified? Mastery Newsletter March 18, 2019

We flew to Hawai’i on a Boeing 737 Max8.

Now the plane has been grounded because of two crashes.

We had to scramble a little to get redirected back home flying on a different plane.

From the media reports it appears there is a design flaw in the Max8.

CBS and CBC reports indicate the plane was rushed into production with a new computer system. The pilots were not advised of the major change.

Because of the change, the computer software was go stop the plane from taking off at too steep and angle at take-off. If it did so, it could stall and crash.

A lot of money was saved by not requiring pilots to be retrained.

The reports indicate this is what caused the two crashes that took so many lives.

I woke up at 2 in the morning angry that no one in Boeing or the FAA caught this potential problem. This put the lives of my wife and I in danger.

Was this anger justified?

There is an easy argument to say yes it was.

But at 2 in the morning what good was it doing me?

While I logically saw I would be better to let it go, my emotions ran rampant.

It took some doing to release it.

I am reminded of the American prophet Edgar Cayce. He forecast earthquakes, volcanos for much of the USA. When asked where should one live to avoid the coming destruction, his answer was profound.

In effect, don’t worry about it. If you are doing the right thing, you will be in the right place at the right time.

Divine guidance is available to us.

Using meditation techniques, we can get into a loving and blissful state. In that state, we are open to divine guidance to steer us in the right direction at all times.

Only when we slip from that state, do we not have divine guidance.

The work of staying in that blissful state is not necessarily easy.

But it is blissfully rewarding.

Matti on assignment in deepest, darkest Kona.

The Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawai’i, that is.

My wife and I came here because we had been exposed to the delights of Kona coffee before.

Many consider coffee grown here on slopes of Hualalei and Mauna Loa Volcano to be the finest in the world.

Taste is of course personal and even coffee “experts” disagree. Some say the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee ranks as #1.

Not to be deterred by such quibbling, we ventured forth…

But which of the 600 plus coffee plantations to visit?

We decided on the one many call the granddaddy of them all…Greenwell Farms.

So named because a Brit by the name of Henry Nicholas Greenwell created a world wide sensation with his plantation here in 1850.

To be called Kona, the coffee has to be in a narrowly defined strip of land between 500 and 1500 feet above level.

Our plantation guide explained many of the factors that give Kona coffee its unique taste. A taste devoid of the bitterness in the throat.

Among these factors, volcanic ash, the range of temperature, the soil and so on.

I, as a long time non coffee drinker, was first seduced by its allure when I drove the coast with my parents back in the 90s.

This pilgrimage was to discover if it still held its appeal at the source.

For me, the verdict is in.

Going forward, Greenwell Kona will be my main coffee. Sadly, I receive no compensation for saying so.

One exception is an instant coffee (horror of horrors) with coconut and medicinal mushroom. (Another story for another time.)

We bought a decent supply to bring back in our suitcases. We also expect to order more when we run out.

This was our first research project on our safari to the Big Island.

Two other equally interesting projects remain. Stay tuned.

P.S. If you go looking for it, you may suffer “sticker shock.” It is one of the most expensive coffees in the world.

Fake It Till You Make It. Mastery Newsletter February 5, 2019

In Laughter Yoga, we have a motto, “Fake it till you make it.”

We do laughter exercises until real laughter kicks in.

With movement and eye contact, laughter can easily be contagious.

It’s great when that happens.

However, it isn’t necessary.

We flood the body with feel good hormones either way.

Just moving the diaphragm up and down for an extended period generates the “feel good” hormones.

That extended period is about 10-15 minutes.

An added benefit: it is not possible for stress hormones to co-exist in the body with the feel good hormones.

They are mutually exclusive.

So…faking laughter can release stress in our bodies.

Does this have application in other areas of life?

How about this?

When I REALLY don’t feel loving, can I fake it till I make it?

Why not?

Why don’t I pretend that I am loving?

After all, that is what actors do all the time.

I can choose to consider myself an actor and do what a loving person would do.

Show kindness and consideration. Extend good feelings to those around me.

One wonders if doing that for 10-15 minutes might have the same effect as faking laughter for 15 minutes.

Might that release stress in my body as well?

Remember, it doesn’t have to be real laughter to release stress.

Perhaps extending kindness and consideration can to the same.

You gotta ask yourself, is this worth trying out?

Letting Go is Hard Work. Mastery Newsletter January 11, 2019

Relax, they say.

How the heck do you do that?

I have this knot of muscles that is tight.

I send an intention to that knot to release.

It doesn’t obey.

What am I to do?

Ignore it? Get massage? Laugh it out?

Dig into with a Back Buddy utensil?

So far, none of those methods nor many others have released that knot of tension.

That is why it occurs to me that letting go, releasing, may be the hardest work there is.

My latest attempt is meditation.

That at least is producing a state of bliss.

Can’t knock it. That is awesome.

Perhaps over time, even the persistent knot will release.

In the meantime, I am experiencing how to stay in bliss more and more.

Having access to bliss is a huge blessing.

I suspect it is what is fueling my journey deeper into myself.

AND bliss is the fuel for unfolding of greater and greater blessings in my life.

Success Through Gratitude.  Mastery Newsletter December 18, 2018

There is no feeling quite like making a success of something.

You toil on a project, finally finish it after many travails and it is just as you wanted it to be.

What a great feeling of accomplishment.

Did you know you have a shortcut to that feeling?

How? Make pretend you have the feeling…fake it till you make it.

And do it through generating a sense of gratitude.

Here is my practice. See if it may work for you.

I do a “gratitude incantation.”

It’s great to do it out loud to begin with. Later, just doing it silently can produce the same result.

For a minimum of 17 seconds chant this:

“Thank you God (Universal Energy, if you prefer) for all the blessings I have and all the blessings I am receiving.

Thank you for the air, the water, the food, the shelter.

Thank you for my wife, my family and all my relations…to love and learn from.

Thank you for the joy, love, energy and abundance.

Thank you for the money, the healing and the prosperity.

Thank you for all the blessings I have and all the blessings I am receiving.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

That should take you about 20 seconds.

The 17 second minimum comes from Gregg Braden’s work. It takes that amount of being in intensity to manifest the feeling. And make changes in the outer world as well.

If you don’t “feel like it,” pretend you are an actor playing a part.

Actors have to find the feeling regardless of what is happening in their personal lives.

Become an actor for 20 seconds. PRETEND you feel great. Pretend you have gratitude.

By faking it, you can generate the feeling.

And is it not true that the feeling is what we are really after?

All the projects, accomplishments, purchases…are they not designed to generate this feeling?

This is a direct route to that feeling. All in 20 seconds or less.

What’s not to love about this?

It has transformed my life.

Strangers into Friends in Seconds. Mastery Newsletter November 12, 2018

I smile at people walking toward me and say “hello.”

 

More often than not, they smile back and sometimes say hello back.

 

It just occurred to me it may be nothing to do with my smile being infectious.

 

Maybe they think they may have met me.

 

Maybe they think they should remember who I am.

 

Maybe they think I remember them from a previous meeting.

 

Maybe they don’t want to appear rude to a person they should know and remember.

 

What a hoot. How hilarious.

 

And what fun.

 

When that smile flashes back at me and they acknowledge me…wow, how great is that.

 

The comedian Victor Borge said laughter is the shortest distance between two people.

 

I am finding smiling is too.

 

There is a friendly connection that is made in that moment when we smile at each other and acknowledge each other with a nod or a “hello.”

 

I am inspired to keep doing it.

 

Now…I live in a medium sized town.

 

Have not tried this in New York City…yet.

 

If you live in a big town, perhaps you might try this and report back on how it works.

Old Habits Die Hard. Mastery Newsletter October 29, 2018

Deep breathing is good for you.

 

Must be true. I have read about it in two books now… ha ha.

 

The Happiness Track by Emma Seppala is one.

 

The other is Joy on Demand by  Chade-Meng Tan

 

Meng says take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Now you have meditated.

 

So, by extension, if I want to meditate all the time and be blissful all the time…

 

All I have to do is continue taking deep breaths and letting them out slowly.

 

After over a decade at Laughter Yoga,

 

After laughing daily for at least 10-15 minutes at a time…

 

After writing a book about it all (The Zen of Joy)…

 

After all that, I know all I have to do it keep breathing deeply all the time.

 

But do I do it? Do I actually do it? Breathe deeply all the time?

 

No. Even though it can and does bring me to bliss every time I do it.

 

Why?

Old habits die hard.

 

Whatever tensions, trauma and stresses I carry still want to have their say, their influence.

 

They continue to divert me from the release that deep breathing can and does bring.

 

So…

 

The question I have is…

 

What if I change my belief from “Old habits die hard” to “How is it that I can easily release old habits that no longer serve me?”

 

Would that accelerate my release of old habits?

 

There is one way to find out, isn’t there?

 

By trying it out.

Ever find yourself cleaning the house in preparation for guests coming over?

 

Why do we do that?

 

What signal are we sending to our subconscious selves?

 

Why is it OK to have the house messy with a “lived-in” look, but it has to be spic and span for guests?

 

If I do that, am I sending a message to myself that others deserve better than I?

 

Hmm…

 

The house has to be cleaner for others than it is for me on a daily basis. Is that true for you?

 

Is there a hint of “fear of being judged?”

 

Does this cleaning up before guests arriving sabotaging our self-esteem?

 

How about this?

 

Why don’t I do this? Keep the house as clean as I am comfortable with and let the guests enter at their own peril? (ha ha)

 

Vacuum weekly, dust monthly…Hey, I’m a guy, I don’t dust that often. I am mindful of the Facebook post I saw this week:

 

“I dust once. It came back. Not falling for that again!” J

 

Why do have good china for “special occasions” when guests come over?

 

Every day above ground is a special occasion.

 

Use the good china, cutlery and so on today, for me!

 

I am just as important as anyone else on the planet.

 

That is the message I want to send to my subconscious…every day.

 

And actions speak louder than words.

 

My subconscious notices everything. How about yours?

Good Grief. Mastery Newsletter July 8, 2018

Good grief, Bad Grief.

 

Emotions, including grief, are a natural and inevitable part of life.

 

What is good about it?

 

Grief can be viewed either as good or bad. In the end, it is an emotion. An intense one, of course, but an emotion.

 

The key is how we process that emotion.

 

Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga, explained to me that in India, the family expresses their grief openly.

 

At a funeral of a loved one, they wail, they cry.

 

He said we in the west tend not to do that. We tend to hold it in.

 

Perhaps some are afraid of being swallowed up by grief. Afraid that if they give in to it, it may never end. Or it may be too intense to handle.

 

Perhaps letting go of the fear around grief can help us to move through it more quickly.

 

Feeling it intensely, crying, wailing, whatever it takes.

 

Some may also feel that to release the grief would be dishonouring the loved one.

 

Consider that the departed loved one may want you to have a good life. They may not want you to hold on to grief all your life.

 

So, perhaps “bad grief” is when we hold on to it. And “Good grief” is when we allow it to express fully and therefore pass through and resolve.

 

If it is inevitable, why not allow it to resolve and fully feel it.

 

Perhaps allowing full expression of a so called “negative” emotion allows us to more fully feel “positive” emotions such as love.

 

Perhaps full expression of grief is essential to living a full and realized life.

 

Just some thoughts to ponder.
