Is there a simple formula/strategy to be happy?

What are the conditions that produce the hormones that are in play when we are happy?

This is one of the best explanations I have seen. Thanks to Durga Dass.

Durga is one of my Facebook Laughter Yoga friends..

“There are 4 Hormones which determine a human’s happiness.

Dear friends …

As I sat in the park after my morning walk, My wife came and slumped next to me.

  She had completed   her 30-minute jog.   We chatted   for a while. She said   she is not happy in life. I looked up at her sheer disbelief since she seemed to have the best of everything in life.

  “Why do you think so?” 

“I don’t know. Everyone tells I have everything needed, but I am not happy.

“Then I questioned myself, am I happy? “No,”   was my inner voice reply.

Now, that was an eye-opener for me.

I began my quest to understand the real cause of my unhappiness, I couldn’t find one.

I dug deeper, read articles, spoke to life coaches but nothing made sense.

  At last my doctor friend gave me the answer which put all my questions and doubts to rest.

  I implemented those and will say I am   a lot happier person.

She said, there are four hormones   which determine a   human’s happiness –

1.   Endorphins, 

2.   Dopamine, 

3.   Serotonin, 

and

4.   Oxytocin.

It is important we understand these hormones, as we need all four of them   to stay happy.

Let’s look at the first hormone the   Endorphins.

  When we exercise, the body releases Endorphins. 

This hormone helps the body cope with the pain of exercising. We then enjoy exercising because these Endorphins will make us happy.

  Laughter is another good way of   generating Endorphins. 

We need to spend 30 minutes exercising   every day, read or watch funny stuff   to get our day’s dose of Endorphins.

  The second hormone is Dopamine. 

In our journey of life, we accomplish many little and big tasks, it releases   various levels of Dopamine. 

  When we get appreciated for our work at the office or at home, we feel accomplished and good, that is because it releases Dopamine. 

This also explains why most housewives   are unhappy since they rarely get   acknowledged or appreciated for their work.   

Once, we join work, we buy a car, a house, the latest gadgets, a new house  and so forth. In each instance, it releases Dopamine and we become happy.

Now, do we realize why we become happy when we shop?

  The third hormone Serotonin is released when we act in a way that benefits others. 

When we transcend ourselves and give back to others or to nature or to the society, it releases Serotonin. Even, providing useful information on the internet like writing information   blogs, answering people’s questions on Quora or Facebook groups will generate Serotonin. 

That is because we will use our   precious time to help other people via our answers or articles.

  The final hormone is Oxytocin, 

is released when we become close to other human beings.

When we hug our friends or family   Oxytocin is released. 

The “Jadoo Ki Jhappi” from Munnabhai   does really work. 

Similarly, when we shake hands or put our arms around someone’s shoulders, various amounts of Oxytocin is released.

So, it is simple, we have to exercise every day to get Endorphins, we have to   accomplish little goals and get Dopamine, we need to be nice to others to get Serotonin and finally hug our kids, friends, and families to get Oxytocin and we will be happy.

  When we are happy, we can deal with our challenges and problems better.

Now, we can understand why we need to hug a child who has a bad mood. 

So to make your child more and more   happy day by day …

 1.  Motivate him to play   on the ground

  -Endorphins 

2.   Appreciate your child   for his small big achievements

  -Dopamine 

3.   inculcate sharing habit through you to your child

  -Serotonin 

4.   Hug your child

  -Oxytocin 

  Have a Happy Life.”

Matti on Assignment in the Kona Highlands.

Should have gone straight instead of turning right…

A long winding road high above the Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Our rental car is being put through its paces.

We have to double back a couple of times. Ask directions and finally phone the chocolate farm.

Eventually, we find it.

Worth the effort.

Pamela and Bob Cooper are doing great work at Original Hawaiian Chocolate.

We were not disappointed as this is the smoothest 70% dark chocolate in living memory.

As with coffee we stocked up for the journey home. Especially with the criollo.

That is made from the rarest cacao bean on the planet.

The west coast of the Big Island continues to amaze.

Is Anger Ever Justified? Mastery Newsletter March 18, 2019

We flew to Hawai’i on a Boeing 737 Max8.

Now the plane has been grounded because of two crashes.

We had to scramble a little to get redirected back home flying on a different plane.

From the media reports it appears there is a design flaw in the Max8.

CBS and CBC reports indicate the plane was rushed into production with a new computer system. The pilots were not advised of the major change.

Because of the change, the computer software was go stop the plane from taking off at too steep and angle at take-off. If it did so, it could stall and crash.

A lot of money was saved by not requiring pilots to be retrained.

The reports indicate this is what caused the two crashes that took so many lives.

I woke up at 2 in the morning angry that no one in Boeing or the FAA caught this potential problem. This put the lives of my wife and I in danger.

Was this anger justified?

There is an easy argument to say yes it was.

But at 2 in the morning what good was it doing me?

While I logically saw I would be better to let it go, my emotions ran rampant.

It took some doing to release it.

I am reminded of the American prophet Edgar Cayce. He forecast earthquakes, volcanos for much of the USA. When asked where should one live to avoid the coming destruction, his answer was profound.

In effect, don’t worry about it. If you are doing the right thing, you will be in the right place at the right time.

Divine guidance is available to us.

Using meditation techniques, we can get into a loving and blissful state. In that state, we are open to divine guidance to steer us in the right direction at all times.

Only when we slip from that state, do we not have divine guidance.

The work of staying in that blissful state is not necessarily easy.

But it is blissfully rewarding.

Letting Go is Hard Work. Mastery Newsletter January 11, 2019

Relax, they say.

How the heck do you do that?

I have this knot of muscles that is tight.

I send an intention to that knot to release.

It doesn’t obey.

What am I to do?

Ignore it? Get massage? Laugh it out?

Dig into with a Back Buddy utensil?

So far, none of those methods nor many others have released that knot of tension.

That is why it occurs to me that letting go, releasing, may be the hardest work there is.

My latest attempt is meditation.

That at least is producing a state of bliss.

Can’t knock it. That is awesome.

Perhaps over time, even the persistent knot will release.

In the meantime, I am experiencing how to stay in bliss more and more.

Having access to bliss is a huge blessing.

I suspect it is what is fueling my journey deeper into myself.

AND bliss is the fuel for unfolding of greater and greater blessings in my life.

Success Through Gratitude.  Mastery Newsletter December 18, 2018

There is no feeling quite like making a success of something.

You toil on a project, finally finish it after many travails and it is just as you wanted it to be.

What a great feeling of accomplishment.

Did you know you have a shortcut to that feeling?

How? Make pretend you have the feeling…fake it till you make it.

And do it through generating a sense of gratitude.

Here is my practice. See if it may work for you.

I do a “gratitude incantation.”

It’s great to do it out loud to begin with. Later, just doing it silently can produce the same result.

For a minimum of 17 seconds chant this:

“Thank you God (Universal Energy, if you prefer) for all the blessings I have and all the blessings I am receiving.

Thank you for the air, the water, the food, the shelter.

Thank you for my wife, my family and all my relations…to love and learn from.

Thank you for the joy, love, energy and abundance.

Thank you for the money, the healing and the prosperity.

Thank you for all the blessings I have and all the blessings I am receiving.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

That should take you about 20 seconds.

The 17 second minimum comes from Gregg Braden’s work. It takes that amount of being in intensity to manifest the feeling. And make changes in the outer world as well.

If you don’t “feel like it,” pretend you are an actor playing a part.

Actors have to find the feeling regardless of what is happening in their personal lives.

Become an actor for 20 seconds. PRETEND you feel great. Pretend you have gratitude.

By faking it, you can generate the feeling.

And is it not true that the feeling is what we are really after?

All the projects, accomplishments, purchases…are they not designed to generate this feeling?

This is a direct route to that feeling. All in 20 seconds or less.

What’s not to love about this?

It has transformed my life.

Strangers into Friends in Seconds. Mastery Newsletter November 12, 2018

I smile at people walking toward me and say “hello.”

 

More often than not, they smile back and sometimes say hello back.

 

It just occurred to me it may be nothing to do with my smile being infectious.

 

Maybe they think they may have met me.

 

Maybe they think they should remember who I am.

 

Maybe they think I remember them from a previous meeting.

 

Maybe they don’t want to appear rude to a person they should know and remember.

 

What a hoot. How hilarious.

 

And what fun.

 

When that smile flashes back at me and they acknowledge me…wow, how great is that.

 

The comedian Victor Borge said laughter is the shortest distance between two people.

 

I am finding smiling is too.

 

There is a friendly connection that is made in that moment when we smile at each other and acknowledge each other with a nod or a “hello.”

 

I am inspired to keep doing it.

 

Now…I live in a medium sized town.

 

Have not tried this in New York City…yet.

 

If you live in a big town, perhaps you might try this and report back on how it works.

Old Habits Die Hard. Mastery Newsletter October 29, 2018

Deep breathing is good for you.

 

Must be true. I have read about it in two books now… ha ha.

 

The Happiness Track by Emma Seppala is one.

 

The other is Joy on Demand by  Chade-Meng Tan

 

Meng says take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Now you have meditated.

 

So, by extension, if I want to meditate all the time and be blissful all the time…

 

All I have to do is continue taking deep breaths and letting them out slowly.

 

After over a decade at Laughter Yoga,

 

After laughing daily for at least 10-15 minutes at a time…

 

After writing a book about it all (The Zen of Joy)…

 

After all that, I know all I have to do it keep breathing deeply all the time.

 

But do I do it? Do I actually do it? Breathe deeply all the time?

 

No. Even though it can and does bring me to bliss every time I do it.

 

Why?

Old habits die hard.

 

Whatever tensions, trauma and stresses I carry still want to have their say, their influence.

 

They continue to divert me from the release that deep breathing can and does bring.

 

So…

 

The question I have is…

 

What if I change my belief from “Old habits die hard” to “How is it that I can easily release old habits that no longer serve me?”

 

Would that accelerate my release of old habits?

 

There is one way to find out, isn’t there?

 

By trying it out.

Ever find yourself cleaning the house in preparation for guests coming over?

 

Why do we do that?

 

What signal are we sending to our subconscious selves?

 

Why is it OK to have the house messy with a “lived-in” look, but it has to be spic and span for guests?

 

If I do that, am I sending a message to myself that others deserve better than I?

 

Hmm…

 

The house has to be cleaner for others than it is for me on a daily basis. Is that true for you?

 

Is there a hint of “fear of being judged?”

 

Does this cleaning up before guests arriving sabotaging our self-esteem?

 

How about this?

 

Why don’t I do this? Keep the house as clean as I am comfortable with and let the guests enter at their own peril? (ha ha)

 

Vacuum weekly, dust monthly…Hey, I’m a guy, I don’t dust that often. I am mindful of the Facebook post I saw this week:

 

“I dust once. It came back. Not falling for that again!” J

 

Why do have good china for “special occasions” when guests come over?

 

Every day above ground is a special occasion.

 

Use the good china, cutlery and so on today, for me!

 

I am just as important as anyone else on the planet.

 

That is the message I want to send to my subconscious…every day.

 

And actions speak louder than words.

 

My subconscious notices everything. How about yours?

Good Grief. Mastery Newsletter July 8, 2018

Good grief, Bad Grief.

 

Emotions, including grief, are a natural and inevitable part of life.

 

What is good about it?

 

Grief can be viewed either as good or bad. In the end, it is an emotion. An intense one, of course, but an emotion.

 

The key is how we process that emotion.

 

Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga, explained to me that in India, the family expresses their grief openly.

 

At a funeral of a loved one, they wail, they cry.

 

He said we in the west tend not to do that. We tend to hold it in.

 

Perhaps some are afraid of being swallowed up by grief. Afraid that if they give in to it, it may never end. Or it may be too intense to handle.

 

Perhaps letting go of the fear around grief can help us to move through it more quickly.

 

Feeling it intensely, crying, wailing, whatever it takes.

 

Some may also feel that to release the grief would be dishonouring the loved one.

 

Consider that the departed loved one may want you to have a good life. They may not want you to hold on to grief all your life.

 

So, perhaps “bad grief” is when we hold on to it. And “Good grief” is when we allow it to express fully and therefore pass through and resolve.

 

If it is inevitable, why not allow it to resolve and fully feel it.

 

Perhaps allowing full expression of a so called “negative” emotion allows us to more fully feel “positive” emotions such as love.

 

Perhaps full expression of grief is essential to living a full and realized life.

 

Just some thoughts to ponder.

They want me to call them “they” instead of “him” or “her.”

 

My home country of Finland doesn’t have this issue.

There is only one, genderless pronoun for human.

 

(For the record, it is “han” with umlauts over the “a.”)

 

One of my Finnish friends had great difficulty adapting to English. He was always calling women “him.”

 

Was he ahead of his time? Being politically incorrect when the phrase was unknown? Hah!

 

The Global Warming/Climate Change issue is fascinating.

 

Over the years now, I have noticed those who think it is true that humans are causing the planet’s warming don’t like to be contradicted.

 

Any discussion soon deteriorates into a mess…name calling, casting aspersions, changing the topic and so on.

 

I sense an underlying tone of…

 

HOW DARE YOU CONTRADICT ME?

 

CAN’T YOU SEE???

 

DON’T YOU FOLLOW THE NEWS?

 

It appears it is now “politically incorrect” to think that it may be possible that humans are not causing “Climate Change.”

 

There is a sense of…”THE SCIENCE IS SETTLED DAMMIT!”

 

Like, don’t you know 97% of scientists agree on it.

 

That figure seems to surface a lot.

 

Guess what? If it was settled, why are 3% disagreeing?

 

Science isn’t a matter of consensus…

 

Science is not a popularity contest.

 

It follows the scientific method. If you are a scientist, you can’t disagree. Yet, we are told 3% do disagree…

 

How can this be?

 

Or…

 

Why did 10,000+ scientists sign a document saying “It ain’t so?”

 

At any rate, how does one express oneself in these times?

 

Hard to know actually…

 

The Thought Police are all around.

 

Climate Change advocates try to shut down discussion.

 

And They want to be called “they” and not him or her…

 

The Buddha said if you really understood life, you would throw your head back and laugh at the sky…

 

I’m with the Buddha…

 

Until they outlaw laughing…

 

I guess then I will have to revert to silent laughter and the Inner Smile…

It means I can continue to enjoy the thrill of learning new things.

 

Learning something, that moment of discovering something new, is ecstasy.

We learn, we grow. We stop learning, we stop growing and we start dying.

 

Learning therefore means life.

 

Nothing in nature stops growing or evolving.

 

Why should humans? The whole idea of “RETIREMENT” is something that does not occur in nature. Why should it be for humans?

 

“Taking it easy.” What a crock.

 

Ask not for an easy life. Ask God instead for strength to meet ever increasing challenges.

 

From this perspective of many decades, I have concluded that it is not possible to have an easy life.

 

The challenges continue to present themselves. And do so in increasing energy and greater challenge.

 

Our lessons in our earlier lives are meant to give us the tools, skills, strength and courage to meet those challenges.

 

The challenges continue. Different for each of us.

 

What is the same is that we continue to learn and build more skill to meet those challenges.

 

Enjoy the ride. Give 100% energy to each task. Learn from everything and everyone.

 

Expect life to get harder. You won’t likely be disappointed.

We had our usual Sunday laughter session in Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, BC. Canada

 

A new laugher, Mr. M, beat his prostate cancer diagnosis.

 

He thanked God for it, knowing that God only provides what we need. He knew it was for a reason.

 

He laughed about it…lots.

 

It helped him heal it.

 

He kept laughing. The hospital staff asked him to come back and help others who were so sad about their cancer.

 

Laughter Yoga continues to amaze me with all the wonderful stories of healing.

Too many things to do…

 

Pulled this way and that…

 

Overwhelming TO DO list…

 

How can I wrestle this list to a manageable size?

 

Power Blocks to the rescue.

 

Research shows us that multi-tasking doesn’t work (google it J).

 

Worse, when we are pulled away from a task, it takes time to get the mind back on track.

 

Answering a phone call or an email will do it.

 

My Mastermind Group have been using this idea and all of us agree, it has made us much more productive.

 

It’s quite simple. And flexible.

 

Here’s how I do it.

 

9.00 comes and I dive into a project. (recently I have been getting ready to launch a new online service.)

 

No distraction is allowed to pull me out. No phone calls, no emails, NO FACEBOOK!!! Or any other “social media!”

 

I work for 45 minutes, precisely.

 

At 9.45, I stop, get up, get a glass of water or tea, possibly check my FACEBOOK, aargh…J

 

At 10.00 PRECISELY! I get back into the project for another 45 minutes.

 

I suppose one could use 30 minute blocks. 45 has worked well, although I have done 30 and sometimes 60 minutes.

 

It is important to get one’s face out of the project though.

 

In 3 hours, all of my Mastermind group report that we got so much more done.

 

It is simple. It is powerful. It addresses the human need for variety.

 

We just can’t stay totally focused for great lengths of time.

 

Unless of course we find ourselves IN THE FLOW…

 

But that is a topic for another time.

Feel Lighter by “Detoxing” Your Body. “Detoxing” is controversial. Some swear by it. Others pooh-pooh it as hocus-pocus. Read both sides of the argument. It is a dangerous metabolic poison that makes you old and sick. Every time you consume sugar, you are doing damage to your body…

 

Dr. Linus Pauling, a chemist and twice Nobel Laureate, once said, ‘Sugar is the most hazardous foodstuff in the American diet.’…

 

Here is some of what sugar does:

  • Damages energy production
  • Causes inflammation
  • Upsets normal Ph
  • Interferes with digestion
  • Throws hormonal balance into chaos
  • Causes platelet stickiness
  • Causes overweight

 

Sugar is more damaging to health than alcohol or tobacco…

 

Sugar has been found to be more addictive than heroin…

 

The upshot is that our modern diet is literally supercharged with fructose, and we are seeing the consequences in our skyrocketing rates of chronic and degenerative disease. If you want to stay biologically young, maintain a healthy weight, and radically reduce your risk or diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, then you must eliminate all refined sugars from your diet and keep your daily consumption of fructose to a minimum. Limit your consumption to 25 grams or less per day. An average orange has about 6 grams, a banana 7 grams, and an apple 10 grams…

 

A very inconvenient truth is that sugar is highly addictive and destructive. However, knowing this is like pulling back the curtain on the great mystery of why so many in our society are sick, suffering, and dying prematurely. You do not have to be one of them. Giving: Great Secret to Prosperity. Mastery Newsletter March 21, 2018

We have grown stingy. To our detriment.

 

It seems we want something in return. Quid pro quo. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.

 

Is this based on the illusion that there is a lack of abundance in the world?

 

That there is only so much of anything to go around?

 

Only so much money, resources, love…

 

Therefore I must have a return on my expenditure.

 

What if?

 

What if the universe is absolutely abundant? What if there is no shortage of anything?

 

What if there is lots of money to go around? A host of resources available to us?

 

An infinity of love?

 

Would that change the way we operate? The way we view giving?

 

What if…the more we give, openly, freely, from the heart, the more the universe gives back to us?

 

I am finding this to be the case.

 

But not in the way I thought. I am learning how to give without any expectation of return.

 

And it doesn’t come back in the way I expected.

 

But I AM finding doors opening all the time.

 

Inspiration and solutions in business and personal life.

 

It seems like a bit of a trick…

 

The giving has to be without expectation.

 

How can I do that when I have, even if only subconsciously, SOME expectation of my life improving as a result.

 

Therein lies the rub.
