Life will kick you. Of that there is no doubt. Mastery Newsletter July 2013

Opening up to more awareness. Why is it Important?

Life will kick you. Of that there is no doubt.

Why? Because we refuse to pay attention.

Ego (our conscious mind) wants to run the show. Ego wants to make plans and implement them. Set goals and work toward them. (Know how to make God laugh? Tell him your plans. J)

What’s wrong with that? Nothing. Except…Ego has a limited view of life and misses some important stuff.

Whereas “Life” (the Universe, God, the Life Force) is infinite and can see “the big picture.”

Therefore, Life is always nudging us toward our highest good. Ego resists because it thinks it knows better.

More accurately put, Ego persists and insists on having its way.

Life is ever present, though, and never gives up. It initially nudges us to move in harmony with its “Grand Plan” and move us toward our highest good.

When we don’t pay attention to the subtle signals, Life gives a stronger message. If we continue to ignore the signals, eventually Life boots us in the behind.

“Pay attention, kid” Life seems to be saying.

Ignore these stronger signals at your peril. Life WILL have its way.

If Life has to make us sick to get out attention, so be it.

Now, here’s the tricky bit.

We have the ability to mask pain. Trauma can cause pain, be it physical or emotional in nature. We can choose to feel the pain, dive into and release it…or we can tense the muscles around that pain and not have to feel it.

If we choose the second option (an all too popular one with me), that pain will eventually resurface. In time, if we continue to mask pain by the unconscious tensing of muscles, the resurfacing of that pain can become excruciating and erupt into serious dis-ease and perhaps one of the major diseases such as cancer, heart attacks and so on.

Life will have its way. Learning how to work with the energies and the subtle and not so subtle messages life sends us may seem more painful at first. Learning how to listen and act on the nudges Life is giving us to move us toward our highest good can open us up to great joy and fulfillment.

Feel the pain now…or feel much more of it later. Those seem to be the choices. I choose feeling and releasing it now.

Here is one way of plugging into intuition, from my book The Zen of Joy.

Just before falling asleep, ask: “Dear God (Dear Universe, Dear Subconscious Mind … it doesn’t matter what you call it,just ask sincerely, according to your own religious or secular belief structure), I ask for and am willing to receive the answer to this question: (state the question).

Thank for providing the answer for me. And it is done.”

Don’t be surprised (though you may be!) if you receive elegant solutions to some of the stickiest “problems” or situations in your life. It has happened for many others. It can happen for you too.

HEALTH

Heal sunburn in one night…three simple ingredients!

Ingredients:

3-4 inch piece off an aloe vera plant, sliced in half

1 Tbsp coconut oil, in liquid form

1/2 – 1 tsp raw honey

The amounts above will vary depending on how much you need to cover. This amount will cover the area that a tank top does not cover on your chest.

Directions: Rub aloe vera all over the burned area and let dry (30-90 sec), next take coconut oil and rub over burned area (over where the aloe was put). Next take the honey or propolis and rub into any areas that look more red or blistered. Then put an old tee shirt on and go to bed. Most if not all will be absorbed by morning. Take a warm wash cloth and wipe off any sticky spots. For maintenance continue the process the next night. Do this process until the burn is either gone or doing much better.

The Discipline of Happiness. Mastery Newsletter June 5 2013

The Discipline of Happiness.

We are taught in many ways that happiness is something that we stumble onto, or have to work at getting as in “the pursuit of happiness” written into the American constitution.

We spend a lot of energy changing our circumstances with the aim of achieving the desired state of happiness.

But, what if our circumstances have little to do with our long term happiness?

What if happiness really is an “inside job?” What if we could be happy and joyous without making any changes to our environment at all?

What if happiness or joy is really dependent on a discipline?

I know it may seem counter-intuitive. We don’t tend to associate the effort of discipline with creating joy.

Sometimes it seems as if the world is conspiring to make us unhappy. Here’s an example: recently, we had a couple of very nice young ladies move in downstairs of our living space. Being young, they stay up later than I do and sometimes even party at all hours of the night and early morning.

Am I supposed to be happy in the wake of a number of continuous nights of disturbed sleep? Hmm.

Here I am the author of a book on joy (The Zen of Joy http://zenofjoy.com/ ) and I find myself getting upset. I just created 24 protocols for the book on how to be joyous regardless of what is going on in the world outside of my skin. Why am I feeling turmoil?

Do these protocols only work in ideal situations and not when I am overly tired? Oh, it’s easy to say I would be angry too if someone kept me up six nights in a row.

But what if?…..

What if the Universe is sending me a test to see how this stuff really works? To see if I really can let go of disturbances in my “energy field?” Even when I am overly tired and even when my “buttons” have been pushed.

When I gave up on the idea retirement as a way of life, I also stumbled on to the concept that we are actually meant to work harder as we grow older. That as we gain experience and skills over the decades, we will find the Universe providing harder and harder tests for us. Tests intended to show us how to let go more and more. To let go of expectations, even the “reasonable” expectation that we should be able to have a good night’s sleep. Whew, heavy thought.

You mean to say the “Promised Land” of retirement doesn’t exist? We don’t actually get to “take it easy” when we get older?

Other cultures value their elders and look to them for guidance. Not so much in our western society. Perhaps it is time to change that.

What can we “older types” do?

I suggest my learning is this: we learn how to set an example by what we do, not what we say.

That we show tolerance, kindness, compassion and yes, love to those who unthinkingly create disturbances for us.

A tall challenge? Yes.

The actor Sylvester Stallone expressed surprise that at age 55, life had not become any easier. I think we need to accept that it is not going to happen.

As motivational author and speaker Jim Rohn said: “We will either have the pain of discipline or the pain of disappointment (or words to that effect).

I choose discipline, the discipline of happiness and joy. I choose working on my “internal architecture” to feel that joy…regardless of what is going on outside of me. Yes, it does at times seem impossible.

The good news is it must be do-able. It may be hard work, but “Hard work never killed a healthy man” said Dr. Paul Dudley White, the doctor to President Eisenhower.

So we get to choose. Discipline ourselves to be happy or be tossed around from happiness to misery by the winds of change.

We have freedom of choice. Which will you choose?

Love and Laughter,

Matti

Laughing Your Way to Joy

One of the great secrets of life is this: If we are happy, we are 31% more productive, make 19% fewer mistakes and, if we are in sales, make 37% more sales.  (Source: Shawn Achor in The Happiness Advantage)

Our minds are the great detractors from joy and happiness. It is when we allow our minds to take over and run the show that we are distracted from our joy.

It is our minds that worry. As we know, worry is not productive. Yet we fret about what might happen in the future.  When we do so, we take ourselves out of the present moment where all our power is.

Also, when we fret about what happened in the past, about mistakes we made and opportunities we missed, we also are not living in the present moment.

Can fear and worry be eliminated if we find a way to live in the eternal “now?”

Why not? Here is a simple 3 Point Method to Get Into the “Now” anytime, anywhere.

1) Release the tension around the eyes: practice the martial arts “soft eyes.”

2) Practice the Inner Smile

3) Put your attention into the centre,  just below the belly button.

It helps if you laugh a bunch first: So, here is How to Laugh Your Way to Joy:

Also: World Laughter Day is a great way to get into joy, access the “Now” and have a great time with friendly folks. In Victoria, we are celebrating at 11am Sunday May 4th. (this Sunday!) at Saxe Point Park. See you there.

Radiation from Fukushima: Quick Two-Point Action Plan

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

How to Suck Radioactive Isotopes Out of Your Body, Your Food and Your Water

Quick 2 Point Action Plan

Only 2 action are deemed essential. Then there are other actions to support those first two, if you choose.

Governments may not be able to help us very much. Not because they don’t want to, but it may be just too much for them.

That leaves it up to us to take individual action.

The good news is:

There are things we can do to protect ourselves

Daniel Vitalis http://www.danielvitalis.com/ has 2 actions he recommends.

1)      Take regular saunas. Saunas have the power to detoxify us from radioactive isotopes and also heavy metals and other toxins.

2)      Geophagy, which is a fancy word for eating clay.

Specific clays recommended are bentonite, French Green Clay and Zeolite. All have similar qualities that cause them to bind with radioactive isotopes in the body. I take the first two and find them cost-effective.

Overview: Mix one tablespoon of the chosen clay in a glass of water. Drink it. Good on an empty stomach. Both available in health food stores.

Details here in a 16 minute video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CRVG5liHAk

Other uses: Zeolite in the form of “Sweet PDZ” from a tack shop can be spread in the garden to pull radioactive isotopes out of your garden vegetables.

He also uses Zeolite on a toothbrush.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Pectin, Chaparral, Chlorella AND Stay Away from Sugar and Sodas

Jon Barron http://www.jonbarron.org/ recommends apple pectin. He says the herb chaparral protects against damage that radiation can do to the DNA. He also recommends chlorella. I suggest staying away from cilantro for reasons outlined in a previous blog…i.e. it is said to open up the blood brain barrier, which is not a good idea if there are heavy metals in the body. As far as iodine is concerned, it only protects against radioactive iodine entering the thyroid and then only for 48 hours.

Stay away from sugar and especially sodas. The sodas contain phosphoric acid which is the worst thing you could consume.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Foods, Herbs and Mushrooms That Can Protect

Ken Peters https://nutristart.com/radiation-iodine/  recommends a number of supplements as well as foods.

Extracts:

“Radioprotective Herbs and Mushrooms

Astragalus.

Green tea: specifically protects against side effects from gamma radiation, and is a powerful antioxidant, protecting against general free radical damage. Drink frequently.

Radioprotective Mushrooms: Reishi mushroom has been shown to prolong the life of cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy;  Cordyceps increases glutathione in the liver. Other mushrooms of value include: Maitake; Shitake; Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor); Zhu Ling (Polyporus umbellatus)

Radioprotective Minerals

Sulfur: Sulfur prevents sulfur-35 from up-taking in the body. While not commonly available in supplement form we can use MSM (methylsulfonyl methane; 2 to 3 grams daily) which is a natural sulfur compound available in powder or pill form (it does taste quite bitter if you use the powder form). MSM is a good anti-inflammatory with additional benefits for tendons, ligaments, hair, skin and preventing allergies. Another supplemental form of sulfur is N-Acetyl-Cysteine (500mg to 1,000mg) also good for removing mucous from the body. NAC is one of the best boosters of glutathione, the internally produced antioxidant that is perhaps the most effective one for protecting against radiation. Do not take more than 1,500mg daily due to its ability to also be a pro-radical in excess.

Clay and Baking Soda

Bentonite clay and other food grade clays, especially French green clay, can attract and pull radiation from the body, when used both internally and externally. This works well because clay has a negative charge and radioactive material has a positive ionic charge. One usually takes a teaspoon of clay, mix it into water, let it settle out and drink the cloudy water while leaving the sediment behind. One can work up to a teaspoon three times per day for more intense purposes. Ingesting clay should be done on an empty stomach (half hour before or an hour after eating). Clays have also proved helpful for removing heavy metals, purifying the intestinal tract and alkalizing the body.

Externally clay can be added to a bath (1 cup) for decontamination purposes. Another decontamination bath is comprised of sea salt (1 lb or 1 cup) and baking soda (1 lb or 1 cup) in a warm bath, soak for at least 20 minutes and rinse off with cool water. When used alone for bathing the amount of baking soda used varies from 1 to 3 pounds per bath, depending on severity of exposure.

Baking soda can also be used internally and is recommended by the army for those exposed to radiation. Baking soda taken orally can reduce the damage that uranium causes to the kidneys. About 1/8th to ½ a teaspoon of baking soda in water three times daily.”

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Commentators are saying to reduce the consumption of foods high up on the food chain, i.e. meat and dairy products. But here may be a way to have your meat and eat it too.

Reduce Radiation in Your Produce

Calcium Bentonite Clay has a uniquely strong negative ionic charge. When activated with water it works like a strong magnet, adsorbing and absorbing anything with a positive ionic charge (i.e., toxins, pesticides, radiation). The clay captures these substances and removes them as the clay is eliminated or washed off.

To remove radiation from your produce, Perry A. Arledge, author of ‘Living Clay, Nature’s Own Miracle Cure,’ recommends starting with liquid clay. This is Calcium Bentonite Clay mixed with water at a ratio of 1 part clay to 8 parts water. In a large non-metallic bowl, mix 1/4 cup of liquid clay with 1 quart of water. Toss your fruits or vegetables in this clay water making sure they’re completely covered and let them sit for about 10 minutes. Rinse and dry them, and store them as you normally would.

You can add Calcium Bentonite Clay to your milk and drinking water if you’re concerned about the possibility of contamination there as well. Add approximately 1 ounce of liquid Calcium Bentonite Clay to a gallon of organic raw milk or water. Some people prefer to let the clay settle to the bottom of the liquid and discard that portion, while others prefer to shake it up and drink them together. Either is fine. Once a contaminant is ‘caught’ by the clay it will not be released, and the clay cannot be digested by your body. All contaminants adsorbed by the clay will be removed upon elimination. And it’s always a good practice to take one to two ounces of liquid Calcium Bentonite Clay twice a day, to keep your body detoxed.” http://www.forbiddenknowledgetv.com/videos/radiation-poisoning/minerals-that-remove-radiation-from-your-bodyzeolite-bentonite–french-green-clay.html

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Filtering Our Water

International Medical Veritas Association http://imva.info/ recommends reverse osmosis for getting radioactive isotopes out of your drinking water:

“US Government Approved

It is rare indeed when I agree with the American government on anything. Reverse-osmosis water filtration systems will remove fallout contamination, according to the United States government. Dr. Roy Speiser also agrees with the government saying, “To protect your drinking water from radioactive contaminants the best filtration equipment solution is reverse osmosis. It should be noted that many water supplies in the United States are already contaminated by naturally-occurring radioactivity including: uranium, strontium, radium 226, 228, alpha and beta particles. The levels of these radioactive contaminants are usually below the maximum concentration level (MCL) allowed by the government, but long-term ingestion… even at low levels… may not be safe.”

According to the EPA, the following treatment method(s) have proven to be effective in removing radionuclides at levels below their MCLs:

Beta Particle and Photon Radiation: ion exchange and reverse osmosis;

(Gross) Alpha Emitters: reverse osmosis;

Radium 226 and Radium 228 (combined): ion exchange, reverse osmosis, lime softening;

Uranium: Ion exchange, reverse osmosis, lime softening, coagulation/filtration.

This more complete system below costs 249 dollars. This same company offers a wide variety of reverse osmosis systems that take one all the way up to over 500 dollars if one is looking for super state-of-the-art systems for professional use.”

http://crystalquest.com/ IMVA says the $249 one is all one needs.

Does being careful of everything we eat make any difference?

One of my correspondents wondered if watching our food intake makes any difference. Here is what she said:

Sometimes I wonder, Matti…….

My family has a history of longevity.   The only thing I could find in common with them was that none of them did any exercise.  🙂

They ate daily in a way we would not consider to be healthy…..always meat, gravy, spuds, a token vegetable-overcooked, desserts and cookies/cake for morning coffee and afternoon tea and bedtime snacks.  My mom never served salads until long after I’d grown up and left home.

So? Does being careful of everything we eat make any difference?

R. made her transition a couple of days ago.  Today she would have been 98 years old.

She’s in my extended family, grandmother of my brother’s kids through their mother so I didn’t inherit any of her genes.

She was much loved….always upbeat, optimistic, never ever critical, always supportive and she made us feel good just to be with her. She is proof that optimists live longer !

Many of my own family liked to look at the bright side rather than the negative but some who were negative thinkers lived into their 90’s.

I don’t see an answer.  Does it really matter what we eat?  My people didn’t take vitamins and supplements.  There’s no history of Alzheimer’s/dementia. I need to knock off the weight I gained since moving here a couple of years ago but “eat less” works as well as any rigid eating program.

I wonder if worrying about what you eat is worse than just eating what you like…(within reason).?????

I begin to think that other factors are more important….like close families, a sense of community, lots of hugs….feeling connected.

🙂

Whew. Lots of issues brought up there.

Yes, I think we all know of folks who ate whatever they wanted, some even smoked all their lives and still lived to a “ripe old age” as the saying goes.

Even your link of optimism would not make sense as some of your “negative thinking” relatives also were long lived.

Your final thoughts have much to recommend them. “Close families, a sense of community, lots of hugs, feeling connected.” The Blue Zones book talked about four different societies where all of these had a positive effect on health and longevity.

There is definitely more to a healthy life than a good diet and exercise. I recently found some studies into community dating back as far as the 1800s that showed a positive effect on health. Hugs have been shown to produce oxycontin, a hormone that helps us to feel good and feel connected.

It may well be that living in joy, laughing often and playing may trump diet and supplements. Recently a TV news report of a 71 year old man entitled “Never Leave the Playground” showed how he had improved the markers of aging by playing all day. Riding his elliptical bicycle, juggling, walking a tightrope and many other activities were featured in the report. He said his memory was sharper than ever as a result.

In Laughter Yoga, we have started to expand to the four elements of joy, laughing, singing, dancing and child-like play. I sense that we can’t go wrong by including some of each of those into a daily routine.

Further, I am reminded that in many shamanic societies, if you came to a shaman or medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions.

When did you stop dancing?

When did you stop singing?

When did you stop being enchanted by stories?

When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence?

Where we have stopped dancing, singing, being enchanted by stories, or finding comfort in silence is where we have experienced the loss of soul.

Dancing, singing, storytelling, and silence are considered four universal healing salves.

Two other points to make and that is that our parents and grandparents lived in a time when food was not as adulterated as it is now. Low levels of antibiotics and growth hormones may find their way into our meat and dairy products. Much of what passes for food in the supermarket some call “junk” food. Most of that was not available to our forebears. (I don’t call it junk food. To me, it is either food or it is junk, i.e. toxic poison.)

So, much greater care is needed to ensure that we are, in fact, eating food and not poison. Your parents may have eaten spuds, but I will bet their consumption of potato chips was negligible.

Further, with the degradation of the soil over the past century, the nutrient value of food is said by many researchers to be negligible. “Nutrient dense” food is the next issue to deal with after we eliminate “junk” food. Then we get into the whole issue of additives. In the 1950s, a handful of food additives were allowed to be added to food. Today, it is estimated there are 50,000 !!! chemicals that are allowed to be added to our food supply.

My friend Dr. Terry Willard estimates that the average North American takes in 10% of their bodyweight in pure chemicals annually. I can’t believe we can easily adapt to that quick a change. (There is evidence to suggest we have not yet adapted to grains, which were introduced 10,000 years ago.)

Whether to supplement? This is becoming stickier as there is a thought that with Codex Alimentarius, many of our vitamins and other supplements may well be taken off the market. A long term plan to move toward nutrient dense food may be all that is left if supplements bite the dust.

Finally, as for worrying, you are definitely right about that. I myself can confess to being a perpetual worrywart about food. When I had hepatitis after foolishly drinking untreated water from Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, I was dining with a new friend at a vegetarian restaurant in Panajachel. When I mentioned that I really ought not to be having olive oil, he quickly retorted: “Don’t hex your food.”

Only years later did I understand the vital importance of blessing our food and eating it with gratitude and reverence. It could well be that even low quality food can transmute itself into wonderful health in our body when we bless it all.

Re Weight Loss (Capitalized, as it is such a common goal in western society): If eating less and exercising more worked, no one would have a weight issue.

The whole “calories in-calories out” theory was blown out of the water by author Tim Ferris in his book The Four Hour Body. Eat a cookie, walk up 27 flights of stairs to work it off is what Ferris calls “Parking lot science.” It’s convenient to think that way, but it does not work. He proved it by gaining 34 pounds in muscle, losing 3 pounds of fat in 28 days. Impossible, said the so called experts. Yet, his entire experiment was recorded by Dr. Peggy Plato, director of Sports and Fitness Evaluation Program at San Jose State University.

So, forget trying to lose fat by limiting food and adding some exercise.

(Did you notice I changed “losing weight” to “losing fat?” Building muscle is critical to fat loss as increased muscle density means you are burning fast even as you sleep. Muscles weigh more than fat, so you may actually gain weight while losing fat and getting healthier.)

Making weight loss a goal is a losing proposition. Instead, I suggest it is far wiser to focus on getting healthier. As we discover the practices that increase our health, fat loss can become an automatic by-product. Far better approach.

(There are examples of those who chose weight loss as a goal, achieved the goal…and died. We had an example here in my home town of Victoria. It was covered extensively in our local newspaper, the Times-Colonist.)

The basics of fat loss are covered in my 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health. You can get it here as a free email course: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/

Two steps anyone can take right away are:

1)     Cut out all wheat, and

2)     Do the “Sugar Fix” program.

See Wheat Belly and The Sugar Fix.

The purpose of life is to be happy, according to the Dalai Lama. I suspect that anything that adds to our happiness is to be supported and anything that detracts from it to be avoided. If we bless our food and our preparation of it and gathering of it we go a long way to supporting our physical health and awareness.

Mindfulness, awareness and paying increasing attention to our intuition may well be the major keys, not just to food choice and preparation, but to our unfolding into our greater selves.

Enjoy the rest of the read,

Matti

The Three Most Dangerous Words in Any Language. March 11, 2013

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

Thanks to T. Harv Eker for turning me on to this in one of his workshops.

The process that happens when we use these three words is dangerous to our mental and physical health.

It is anathema to our spiritual growth.

It puts the brakes on learning.

It creates calcification of attitude.

It makes us rigid, instead of flexible.

It sets us up for failure.

What are these three culprit words?

“I know that.”

They are simple words. If we find ourselves thinking those words when we are listening to new ideas, we can shut out learning about new information that may benefit us.

If we, even subconsciously and maybe automatically, default to the process of “pigeon-holing” ideas, concepts, theories, presentations and even people, we create a wall between us and new and potentially useful information.

It may be the ego’s way of defending itself. The ego has to feel superior. If it admits that it doesn’t know something, it feels inferior. So, at the earliest opportunity, it takes the stance that it already knows what is being presented to it.

All new information is quickly catalogued into an already familiar pigeon-hole. As soon as that is done, the ego no longer has to feel inferior. That’s why the ego does it at the earliest opportunity.

As soon as the pigeonholing is done, the ego now is ready to talk and no longer listening and taking in any more information. Any information being presented after that point is not being processed. Often times, the ego will interrupt the speaker with its point of view.

Does any of this sound familiar? It may be very much easier to see others do this than to notice ourselves doing it. Trust me, we all do it. 🙂

If you are keen on learning and growing and delighting in the adventure of exploring new vistas in life, there is an antidote.

The Antidote

That antidote is listening with keen interest. If we accept that every one we meet has something to teach us, that makes it easier.

Conversely, if we think that we know best and others need to listen to us, we are victims of the “I Know That Virus.”

To bathe in the delight of learning, the adventure of exploring new and exciting vistas, listening deeply is a major key.

How do we do that? The next time someone says something to you, try this. Instead of waiting for your turn to speak, listen closely to what is being said with the intent of “sucking the marrow” out of whatever knowledge and wisdom may be contained in their talk. Take mental notes as if you were to be tested on the material later.

Then, when the speaker pauses, instead of offering our viewpoint we can choose to ask a question. There will usually be something that the speaker either left out of their story or something that triggered our curiosity to know more.

Then, ask another question. And another. And another.

You may find as I have that these questions do a number of things. First, you may find you learn something new and possibly useful that you did not know before. (You may find yourself surprised at this.)

Also, you may find yourself making a deeper and friendlier, more intimate connection with the speaker. You did after all show keen interest in them. The most interesting subject to any human is themselves. When you show an interest in them, you are sharing a common interest.

If you spend an hour with someone just asking questions and listening, they may comment what a great conversationalist you are. 🙂

Benefits: You can learn something new. It may be useful in your life. You may make a new friend or deepen the connection with an existing one. And you may gain a reputation as a great conversationalist.

This is a learned skill, this asking of questions. If you are speaking with a trained salesperson, you may quickly find them starting to ask you questions. It may be easy to fall into just speaking about yourself. Before you know it, you may be talking at length about your favourite subject, yourself. 🙂

At that point, you have a choice to notice that and start asking questions about with the sincere intent to learn. If you do, you may well find yourself learning new and surprising things. This is a wonderful life enrichment skill that you can use anywhere at any time.

Have fun learning this skill.

How Manipulated is Your Mind? Questionnaire discovers how much you have been influenced by advertising, PR and propaganda.

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

Most of us believe we think for ourselves. We come to logical conclusions based on our rational thinking on subjects.

How true is this? How much of our thinking and our behaviour being influenced and shaped by manipulators? Manipulators can include advertisers, politicians, corporations and governments and even non profit societies. These manipulations can be aimed at good purposes such as charities or for not so good such as getting us to buy things we don’t need.

Answer these questions to discover how much your thinking and behaviour may be influenced or shaped by the manipulators.

1)    Who first invented the light bulb?
2)    Have you ever eaten bacon and eggs for breakfast?
3)    Have you ever used the term “Banana Republic?”
4)    Have you ever smoked cigarettes?
5)    Have you ever been to a ballet?
6)    Have you ever used Ivory soap?
7)    Have you ever drunk fluoridated water or used fluoridated toothpaste or had fluoride treatment for your teeth?
8)    Have you ever used disposable cups?
9)    Have you ever stopped smoking?
10)    Have you ever bought an item of clothing without actually needing it? Example: have you bought a shirt when you already have one or more?

How to score yourself:

Give yourself one point if you answered Thomas Edison to the first question. The first inventor or the light bulb was actually Sir Joseph Swan, a British physicist and chemist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Swan
The reason we have been manipulated to think it was Edison is because of a public relatiosns or “PR” stunt staged by master manipulator Edward Bernays. In October of 1929, Bernays created an event called “Light’s Golden Jubilee” to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb.

Give yourself one point for each “yes” answer to questions 2-9.

Edward Bernays, a nephew of Sigmund Freud and the inventor of the term “public relations,” had a hand in each of the above behaviours.

Point 2) Bernays used his uncle Sigmund’s ideas to promote the concept that bacon and eggs was the ideal breakfast. Largely due to his efforts, that idea was widely adopted.

3) Bernays was hired by the United Fruit Company and the U.S. government to create a propaganda campaign to help overthrow the democratically elected government of Guatemala. The term “banana republic” was used to explain United Fruit Company’s domination of corrupt governments in Guatemala and other Latin American countries.

4) I have no info on men and the early causes of smoking, so men, you get a pass on this one. For women though, score one point if you answered yes.

One of Bernays’ most famous campaigns was getting women to smoke. Prior to the 1929 Easter Parade in New York, which Bernays staged, women could be arrested for smoking in public or outside of designated areas. Working on behalf of the American Tobacco Company, Bernays hired young models to light up simultaneously on his signal. He had alerted newspaper photographers who were on hand to capture images of the young models lighting up “Torches of Freedom” during the event.

The New York Times of April first 1929 printed: “Group of Girls Puff at Cigarettes as a Gesture of ‘Freedom.’” This helped to break the taboo against women smoking in public. After the historical public event, women started lighting up more than ever before. It was through Bernays that women’s smoking habits started to become socially acceptable.

5) In 1915 during Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes American tour, Bernays convinced magazines to write articles that told people that ballet is fun to watch.

6) Bernays worked with Procter & Gamble for Ivory soap. The campaign successfully convinced people that Ivory soap was medically superior to other soaps, largely because the soap floated better than its competitors.

7) Bernays helped the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) and other special interest groups to convince the American public that water fluoridation was safe and beneficial to human health. This was achieved by using the American Dental Association in a highly successful media campaign.

8) In the 1930s, Bernays’ Dixie Cup campaign was designed to convince consumers that only disposable cups were sanitary.

9) Bernays had a hand in getting people to stop smoking as well. After his semi-retirement in the 1960s he worked with anti-smoker lawyer John Banzhaf’s group, ASH and supported other anti-smoking campaigns.

10) In a 2002 award winning BBC documentary, “The Century of the Self,” Bernays is credited with largely starting the “consumer society.” The documentary claims that prior to Bernays, most people wore out their pants before buying a new pair. So, if you buy clothing to replace an item of clothing before it is worn out, you are to some extent, the victim of a propaganda system that created the fashion industry.

This manipulation of the “public mind” as Bernays termed it, is going on today and many levels and goes beyond just costing us money in buying what we don’t need or items that are more expensive than they need be. (Just look at the premium we pay for brand names.)

In his 1928 book “Propaganda,” Bernays argued that the manipulation of public opinion was a necessary part of democracy:

“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. …We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. (My bolding) This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. …In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons…who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.”

The problem with Bernays’ opinion is that his methods can be used to create totalitarian societies as well. Bernays himself was shocked to find out that the Nazis used his methods to consolidate their power.

In his 1965 autobiography, Bernays recalls a dinner at his home in 1933 where:

“Karl von Wiegand, foreign correspondent of the Hearst newspapers, an old hand at interpreting Europe and just returned from Germany, was telling us about Goebbels and his propaganda plans to consolidate Nazi power. Goebbels had shown Wiegand his propaganda library, the best Wiegand had ever seen. Goebbels, said Wiegand, was using my book Crystallizing Public Opinion as a basis for his destructive campaign against the Jews of Germany. This shocked me. … Obviously the attack on the Jews of Germany was no emotional outburst of the Nazis, but a deliberate, planned campaign.”

Though shocked, this did not stop Bernays. The genie he let out of the bag still roams the media landscape today. And as we noticed from our little questionnaire affects our thinking and behaviour on a daily basis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Bernays

I don’t have any pat answers or solutions to this. My approach has been the following.

How can I tell if I am brainwashed? I can’t by definition! If I am brainwashed, I can’t tell. Therefore, the only safe assumption is that I am brainwashed.

Proceeding from that assumption, how can I un-brainwash myself? The answer? I don’t know for sure. I am suspecting it has a lot to do with getting into the “now” that Eckhart Tolle talks about in his books The Power of Now and A New Earth.

Meditation may hold much of the answer to the problems of today. Would love your feedback. I believe Ram Dass is right when he says: “We are all just walking each other home.”

Violent crime and leaded gasoline: An elemental link?

Great CBC interview. The best thing we ever did to fight violent crime? Get rid of lead in gasoline??!?!?! What? Listen>

For twenty years, people have been arguing over what produced a global drop in violent crime through the 1990s and early 2000s. Some thought poverty-reduction and education. Others said better policing or more jails. But now one writer says the key factor was the rise and fall of leaded gasoline. We find out why more and more researchers think the switch to unleaded gasoline was the best thing we ever did to fight violent crime.

Special Article: Ten Facts About Cannabis

By Matty Harton

Over the past few months, I have had many people approach me with claims regarding cannabis and its “health issues”. I would like to dispel these myths.

Fact One.
Cannabis Use Has Never Killed Anyone.

Unlike tobacco, petro chemicals, and various other inhalants, cannabis contains no toxicities, no substances proven to be damaging to the human body. In a recorded 5000 years of use, cannabis has never killed anyone.

“There is no record in the extensive medical literature describing a proven, documented cannabis-induced fatality, despite a long history of use and the extraordinarily high numbers of social smokers.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Medical_cannabis#Safety_of_cann abis

Fact Two.
Cannabis Is Not A Gateway Drug.

After many government funded claims that cannabis is a doorway to harmful substances, the opposite is now proven true. Alcohol and tobacco are both legal and easy to obtain. They are also extremely addictive and health damaging, which is a direct influence towards hard substances. Cannabis has recently been trialled as an excellent “exit substance” helping addicts to leave their routines of substance abuse.

“Researchers reported that subjects frequently substituted cannabis for other substances, including conventional pharmaceuticals. Authors reported: Over 41 percent state that they use cannabis as a substitute for alcohol.”

http://www.alternet.org/drugs/ marijuana-exit-drug-study-sugge sts-some-are-taking-it-substit ute-prescription-drugs-and

Fact Three.
Cannabis Is Not Chemically Addictive.

Anyone can build up an unhealthy habit of using anything. This includes eating, sleeping, watching television etc. This does not mean that the activity itself is addictive, it simply means that the user has built up a recurrent habit. Tobacco contains a chemical called nicotine, which is highly addictive. Cannabis does not contain one single addictive substance, and has been proven to have less habit forming qualities than sex, fatty foods, aspirin, coffee, and many other everyday items and activities. This wrong information is interpreted by those observing users smoking cannabis out of boredom.

“Because cannabis did not lead to physical dependence, it was found to be superior to the opiates for a number of therapeutic purposes. Birch, in 1889, reported success in treating opiate and chloral addiction with cannabis, and Mattison in 1891 recommended its use to the young physician, comparing it favourably with the opiates.”

Fact Four.
Cannabis Does Not Damage The Brain.

The original claims that cannabis killed brain cells came from an examination involving a group of monkeys receiving cannabis smoke through gas masks. These monkeys died from brain damage, which was associated with the cannabis smoke, with no scientific evidence to back these claims. This was later proven to be down to the lack of oxygen, resulting in cell death. The substances within cannabis have been in actual fact, proven to have the capability to aid cell growth within the brain, and are well documented as neuroprotective, meaning that cannabis actively protects the brain.

“Experiments on rats given a potent cannabinoid have shown the drug stimulates the growth of new brain cells. Canadian researchers found that the drug caused neurons to regenerate in the hippocampus, an area that controls mood and emotions, after one month of treatment.”

http://www.independent.co.uk/ life-style/health-and-families/ health-news/ highdose-cannabis-stimulates-gr owth-of-brain-cells-in-rats-51 0869.html

Fact Five.
Cannabis Does Not Cause Lung Cancer.

Cannabis was thought to have lung associated health risks because of the direct risks associated with smoking tobacco. Dr. Donald Tashkin was given the task of observing both users and none users, and the effects of cannabis on the lungs. What he, and many others have found, is that those who smoke cannabis halved their risk of lung cancer to what it would have been had they smoked tobacco alone. He also found that cannabis protected the lungs slightly more than the protection of a none smoker, meaning that cannabis does indeed protect the lungs. Cannabis is an excellent chest expectorant, irritating the lining of the lungs, allowing the user to cough up any tar associated with tobacco smoking.

“The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.” “We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use,” he said. “What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect.”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/ 25/AR2006052501729.html

Fact Six.
Cannabis Does Not Cause Schizophrenia.

Cannabis has been proven to aid the symptoms of various mental and neurological conditions such as anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, autism, parkinsons disease, and even epilepsy. Cannabis has also been proven to stave off degenerative brain disorders such as alzheimers disease. The reason many think that cannabis causes schizophrenia, is because so many schizophrenia patients use the plant to relax their symptoms. This could in turn (if they are using a heavily psychoactive strain) aggravate one or two other symptoms, which is why so many dispensaries specialise in none psychoactive strains of cannabis.

“Marijuana saved my life!!! I was given every antidepressant and anti psychotic that there is and had terrible adverse reactions to all of them. Of course my doctors did not believe me at first, but as time went on they could see that it was true. Thank God for blessing me with the best doctors in the world, because they did really listen to me.”

Fact Seven.
Cannabis Is Not Illegal Due To Health Risks.

Before being made illegal, cannabis was a well respected plant. It had incredible potential within the medical and pharmaceutical industry. There were over 100 articles dedicated to the medical benefits of cannabis, and cannabis, then known as Indian hemp, was within most medications, and classed as psychologically safe. Hemp had also been classed as the number one cash crop with over 50,000 industrial uses. Hemp could create biodegradable fuel, resins and oils, lubricants, paints, varnishes, plastics, wood, it could even create concrete (hempcrete). After this explosion of interest, cannabis was swiftly made illegal at the advent of big investors and pharmaceutical companies, whom the plant would have affected financially. There are many theories, but the general facts remain the same. Cannabis, after 5000 years of medical use, was made illegal and deemed unsafe in order to protect pharmaceutical and industrial investors. Over time, with the release of the film “Reefer Madness” and much sexist and racist accusations of the plants use, many members of the public, including the medically trained, still to this day believe that cannabis is dangerous, when in reality, there is no existing evidence to suggest this is so.

“Many people assume that marijuana was made illegal through some kind of process involving scientific, medical, and government hearings; that it was to protect the citizens from what was determined to be a dangerous drug. The actual story shows a much different picture. Those who voted on the legal fate of this plant never had the facts, but were dependent on information supplied by those who had a specific agenda to deceive lawmakers. You’ll see below that the very first federal vote to prohibit marijuana was based entirely on a documented lie on the floor of the Senate.”

http://www.drugwarrant.com/ articles/ why-is-marijuana-illegal/

Fact Eight.
Cannabis Can Indeed Successfully Treat Cancer.

Many people when they hear this, imagine a chemotherapy patient smoking cannabis to relieve the treatments effects, this is true, but this is not what I am talking about. The active components within cannabis have been proven to combat cancer in numerous ways. Thus far, thousands of people whom have concentrated cannabis into oil form, have successfully treated their cancer, sending the disease into remission. This is becoming increasingly well known, but it is not as simple as smoking cannabis. When the plant is strained of its chemicals (cannabinoids), and slightly heated to decarboxilate these active substances, these cannabinoids can be concentrated into various types of extracts, most commonly cannabis oils (not hemp seed oil). This has a large success rate with a great deal of investigation currently underway. This technique does not have the side effects of chemotherapy, and also has a similar effect to Dr. Burynski’s cancer fighting “antineoplastons.”

“Many scientific studies have reported that various cannabinoids (both natural and synthetic) exert a wide range of growth-inhibiting effects on cancer cells, including:
– Triggering cell death, through a mechanism called apoptosis.
– Stopping cells from dividing.
– Preventing new blood vessels from growing into tumours –a process termed angiogenesis.
– Reducing the chances of cancer cells to metastasize through the body, by stopping cells from moving or invading neighbouring tissue.
– Speeding up the cell’s internal ‘waste disposal machine’ –a process known as autophagy – which can lead to cell death.”

Fact Nine.
Cannabis Could Aid World Poverty.

Cannabis can be grown in a variety of ways, in almost all conditions. It can be grown indoors or outdoors, specifically in tropical countries. Cannabis seeds are the most nutritious source of protein on earth, and contain a variety of natural omegas. The plant can be juiced wet, made into various extracts and medibles such as canna-butter, which allows all of the goodness without the high effect. It has been argued that a community could live off industrial hemp and medical cannabis. This one plant could provide effective medicine, as well as vast material uses. The cultivation of hemp could provide work and trade, and the communities could provide themselves with housing, with very little help. Cannabis is also anti fungal, anti bacterial, anti spasmodic, anti depressant, and could be used to prevent and to treat a variety of the common ailments third world communities suffer with. The money it would take to end world hunger is roughly what the world military spends in eight days, there will always be poverty, but most could easily be aided.

“The inside of the hemp seed, also known as the hempnut, is rich in both protein and oil. And the oil is one of the richest sources of essential fatty acids (EFAs). You may choose to eat the entire seed, or only the hempnut, or to press the oil out of the seed and use the oil and the meal (the rest) separately. Hemp is a great source of protein. Although it does not have as much protein as soy, the spectrum of amino acids in it makes it a more digestible source of vegetable protein. As well, hemp is not genetically modified, unlike most soy. Hemp oil is equally remarkable. It contains approximately 56% Omega 6 or Linoleic Acid (LA), 20% Omega 3 or Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) and 3% gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Hemp is one of only two plants known to contain all three of these vital nutrients.”

http://www.ecomall.com/ greenshopping/hempr.htm

Fact Ten.
Cannabis Would Aid Communities And The Economy.

Due to the obvious losses inherited by pharmaceutical industries, many believe cannabis would damage the economy. I ask you, as a community, what do we want for our economy? Safe medicine, safe food, healthy people, economic trade, increased job availability, decreased crime, these are all factors that could be so if cannabis were legal. If cannabis dispensaries were set up specifically for patient via the NHS, if recreational cannabis was taxed and sold, if individuals were allowed to obtain and use cannabis without trouble from the law, our community would be much safer. The reason cannabis works as a medicine, is because our bodies naturally create very similar hormones to the plants cannbinoids, in order to regulate our bodies and our cells. When these “endogenous cannabinoids” fall off balance, we become prone to disease. The only substance on earth which contains these cannabinoids is cannabis, and by keeping the plant illegal, we actively encourage endo-cannabinoid deficiency, which scientifically is the route of all disease. Cannabis is a natural nutrient, and with such knowledge of cannabis ability to save the poor and the ill, keeping this plant illegal is outright genocide.

“The recent identification of cannabinoid receptors and their endogenous lipid ligands has triggered an exponential growth of studies exploring the endocannabinoid system and its regulatory functions in health and disease. Such studies have been greatly facilitated by the introduction of selective cannabinoid receptor antagonists and inhibitors of endocannabinoid metabolism and transport, as well as mice deficient in cannabinoid receptors or the endocannabinoid-degrading enzyme fatty acid amidohydrolase.”

Be More Effective and Efficient: Get Organized

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

“I would like to simplify my life.” 62% of those surveyed in a 1992 study by the Merck Family Fund agreed with that statement. Yet, most people don’t make any effort at all to simplify their lives.

And that is even when “not having enough time” is the number one problem in their lives. They continue their disorganized ways and refuse to change, which means the condition of not having enough time will not change either.

“Disorganized people are inefficient, because they have to expend extra time and effort—calling the bank to get a duplicate copy of a statement already received and now lost, running to the crowded mall at the last minute to buy a forgotten holiday present, standing in line on April 14th waiting to mail income tax returns. All of these activities waste time because of poor organizations and planning skills.” –Bob Bly in Make Every Second Count.

Nourishing Peace Part 4 of 4: We bring peace by becoming more aware of what we consume.

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

The Fourth Nutriment: Consciousness

Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk writing in Calming the Fearful Mind, speaks of four nutriments that we consume:

1) Edible food,

2) Sensory food,

3) Our deepest desire and

4) Consciousness.

The Fourth Nutriment: Consciousness

Two Levels to Consciousness

Hanh invites us to think of consciousness as having two levels: the living room and the basement. The living room is where everything is visible. This is where we are thinking, calculating or dreaming.

The “Basement Level” has seeds
The basement is where we stuff everything we don’t like. You might call it the subconscious. The basement “stuff” is like seeds. If we water them, they sprout. There are all kinds of seeds down there: Wholesome seeds of love, happiness, joy, forgiveness and generosity are examples. Unwholesome seeds include hatred, fear, anger and craving. Hanh says we all have all of the different kinds of seeds, both wholesome and unwholesome.

Which seeds are we watering?

We can be playing, having fun and being happy and then someone comes along and waters the seed of anger in us, the anger arises as a mental formation and takes away all our happiness. If we allow anger into our mind and stay for an hour, then we are eating anger for an hour. The more we eat anger, the more it grows.

On the other hand, if we water the loving kindness seed and allow it to flower, then we are eating or consuming loving kindness for an hour.

If you do not nourish your love, it will die

The Buddha said nothing can survive without food. Hanh says: “If you do not nourish your love, it will die. If you cut the source of nutriment for your violence, it will die. If you want your love to last, you have to give it food every day. Love cannot live without food. If you neglect your love, after a while it will die and hatred may take its place…If we don’t give hatred food, it too will die.”

An agreement

“We can say to those close to us, ‘Dear one, let’s be careful not to water the unwholesome seeds in each other.’…When we water seeds of forgiveness, acceptance, and happiness in the person we love, we are giving them very healthy food for their consciousness, as if we were cooking them a delicious healthy meal.”

Your Mission

Your mission and mine, if we choose to accept, is to commit to watering the wholesome seeds in ourselves and in each other.

The “I Love You” exercise

Louise Hay has an exercise I love. First thing in the morning and last thing at night, look into the mirror, gazing deeply into your own eyes. Say “I love you, I really love you.” Say it like you mean it. Say it for at least 20 seconds. Notice your reaction. If you are like me, it may be difficult at first.

Nourish Your own love first
Why is this important? Think of the safety announcement at the beginning of an airplane flight. You are instructed that if the oxygen masks drop down, first put one on yourself and then help others to put theirs on. If you pass out from lack of oxygen while trying to help others, you are doing no good for them or you.

In the same way, if we don’t first nourish ourselves with love, our love “tank” may not have enough to spread to others.

The Way Out of Suffering

Hanh: “The way out of our suffering is mindfulness of consumption, not only for ourselves but for the whole world. If we know how to water the seeds of wisdom and compassion in us, these seeds become powerful sources of energy helping us to forgive those who have hurt us. This will bring relief to our nation and our world.”

Love and laughter,

Matti

Nourishing Peace and Happiness Through Conscious Consumption Part 3: Cultivating Compassion

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

The Third Nutriment: Our Deepest Desire: Cultivating Compassion

Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk writing in Calming the Fearful Mind, speaks of four nutriments that we consume:

1) Edible food,

2) Sensory food,

3) Our deepest desire and

4) Consciousness.

The Third Nutriment: Our Deepest Desire: Cultivating Compassion

There is a Native American story that frames this discussion well:

“An old Grandfather said to his grandson, who came to him with anger at a friend who had done him an injustice, ‘Let me tell you a story. I too, at times, have felt a great hate for those that have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do.

But hate wears you down, and does not hurt your enemy. It is like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die. I have struggled with these feelings many times.’ He continued, ‘It is as if there are two wolves inside me. One is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him, and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so, and in the right way.

But the other wolf, ah! He is full of anger. The littlest thing will set him into a fit of temper. He fights everyone, all the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger, for his anger will change nothing.

Sometimes, it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit.’

The boy looked intently into his Grandfather’s eyes and asked, ‘Which one wins, Grandfather?’

The Grandfather smiled and quietly said, ‘The one I feed.‘”

In the same vein, Thich Nhat Hanh talks of healthy desires and unhealthy desires.

The Healthy Desires

The healthy desires are the ones that nourish us and gives us energy. They are “…to protect life, to protect the environment, or live a simple life with time to take care of yourself and your beloved ones…(these desires)…will bring you to happiness.”

The Unhealthy Desires

The unhealthy desires are wanting power, wealth, sex and fame. If we feed these desires, says Hanh: “…you are consuming a very dangerous kind of food and it will bring you a lot of suffering.”

Hanh has had both rich and famous people attend his seminars. They have shared with him that neither wealth nor fame has made them happy. Instead their happiness came from coming back to their own hearts and minds and really practicing.

Becoming Rich and/or Famous NOT the Answer

The comedic actor Jim Carrey is quoted as saying: “I wish everyone could become rich and famous so they would know it’s not the answer.”

Lottery Wins do NOT Increase Long Term Happiness

Many still harbour the fantasy that winning the lottery will make them happy. Few believe me when I tell them of author Marci Shimoff’s research that showed little change in long term happiness for lottery winners. Instead, I get the feeling that those folks almost feel insulted when I dare to tarnish their shining fantasy of what life will be like when they win the lottery.

Cultivating Compassion

Hanh tells us that this desire for wealth brings us suffering. So why do we persist in chasing after rainbows?  I don’t have a definitive answer. I can tell you that I work/play every day to nourish my desire to help others, to love myself deeply and to nourish the desire to love others deeply as well. It is my strongest desire that cultivating this compassion and love for myself and others will contribute to peace in my heart and mind and in the world.

Hanh: “Whether we are eating a bowl of rice, enjoying a field of flowers, or nourishing our deepest desire, we practice doing it as mindfully as possible, conscious of each breath.”

Your Mission Should You Choose to Accept
Your mission (and mine), should you and I choose to accept it, is to begin or continue to deepen our awareness of our every action and thought. We can do this by watching our breath more and more as we go through the day. Just taking a deep breath from time to time and noticing the effect on the body and mind goes a long way to deepening our awareness.

Nourishing Peace and Happiness Through Conscious Consumption. Part Two: Sensory Food

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

Part Two of Four: We bring peace by becoming more aware of what we consume.

Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk writing in Calming the Fearful Mind, speaks of four nutriments that we consume:

1) Edible food,

2) Sensory food,

3) Our deepest desire and

4) Consciousness.

The Second Nutriment: Sensory Food.

According to Hanh, the Buddha taught that we consume or "eat" sensory food and what we eat makes a difference in our lives.

This is eating with our sense organs: our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind. Everything that comes in to us is food, be that a TV program, a conversation, music, art and of course all the advertising we consume: radio, newspapers, magazines, billboards and online. Nowadays, we can add texting and mobile phone input.

Much of our sensory food is toxic

Hanh's point is that some or much of that input can be toxic and deplete our energies. The good input from TV, magazines, music and art can nourish our souls. But there are much of the input in the modern world can contain "…craving, despair and violence." This kind of input can and does create desires to buy "stuff." Thus is built the "consumer society" buying useless trinkets that are soon discarded. This sucks our energy and not the least our financial energy. Buying stuff we don't need depletes our pocketbooks.

Children see 8,000 murders on screen in a lifetime

Hanh calls this kind of sensory input "poison." Poison that we allows our children to consume as well. Hanh: "According to the American Psychological Association, a typical American child will watch 100,000 acts of violence and 8,000 murders on television in his lifetime. That is too much…They become victims of violence and fear."

And it's become worse. A generation ago, when cowboy moves and TV programs were the rage, there was far less gunplay in them and the bad guys paid by going to prison. Not so much today. Often there is no consequence for acts of violence.

Video games feed the violence

Then we come to video games where kids shoot at targets, who then come back to life. How many targets does that average child shoot and kill in video games by the time they become adults? Hanh: "This kind of game is infinitely dangerous. When children are young they cannot distinguish between the game and reality. Because children consume this kind of sensory food every day through television and video games, they are constantly feeding the violence in their consciousness."

"Gun control" to the rescue?

What is society's answer to the tragedy of shootings in schools by young people? Gun control laws. As if creating a law against a weapon will root out years of violent sensory food that has been fed to young people. It is a symptom of a deep rooted illness in our society that we have great difficulty looking past the surface of issues.

Shootings continue despite gun controls

I have no issue against creating common sense laws but let us not fool ourselves that this will solve the problem. In the country I live in, Canada, we have had gun control laws in place for a long time. Yet one Monday morning a few weeks ago, the CBC Radio morning news reported a total of eight shootings over the weekend in my province of BC. This in a country that has gun control laws.

Not many days before I write this, a man indiscriminately stabbed nine people with a knife in a Vancouver condo complex. These were people he did not know and had never seen before. Thankfully, they all survived though many others were traumatized as well. Are we now to ban knives?

Decreasing our violent sensory input

Would it not serve us better to look deeper for the root causes of these tragedies? Perhaps we can pay closer attention to what Hanh says about consuming violent "food" through our senses. He suggests we "…make a commitment to mindful, intelligent consumption of both edible foods and cultural items."

Your mission (and mine)

Your mission (and mine), should you and I decide to accept, is to start or continue the process of becoming more and more aware of our sensory input and choose more carefully what kind of movies and TV programs we watch, what kind of books, magazines and newspapers we read. We can even start to pay attention to our one-on-one interactions. How much violence is there in our every day speech? Is taking a course in Non Violent Communication an option? See Marshall Rosenberg's work on Non Violent Communication. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonviolent_Communication

In that regard, much of the what is put in the media as news for us to consume can feed our fears. I still want to have a feeling of what is going in our world, so I have not eliminated news from my diet (yet! It may still happen as I wean myself off other input). However, with the advent of the internet, I find it less intrusive now. In the past, I watched TV news and wasted many an hour being bombarded with fearful stories and images.

Reducing violent sensory input while staying in touch with the world

Now I choose to consume what news there is from the RSS feeds that are available from many sources. My personal choices are a local radio and newspaper online news pages plus RSS feeds from the CBC for regional and national news. An American network, the BBC and Guardian feeds for the UK plus Time and Christian Science Monitor. I get four feeds from my home country of Finland and a few financial feeds. I of course have a number of health related feeds as well.

What this means is that of all the potentially toxic "sensory food," that is available in unlimited quantities, I can scan headlines and be done with it all in a matter of less than a few minutes. That way, I still stay in touch with the world outside of my body/mind/spiritual "system," but I don't have to bombard myself with it all.

Another quick word about news. We have been trained by the media to believe that "news" is important somehow and we need to stay in touch with the developments in the arenas of politics and science, not to mention sporting events. (Sporting events are a topic left for another time)

During my time as a radio news reporter, announcer and talk show host, I became painfully aware of how inaccurate news really is. More and more the key factor is what stories will keep eyes glued to the TV screen. There are wars being waged continuously around the world that are not reported. These wars have just as many atrocities committed as the ones we see on our TV screens.

Nine Words That Summarize all the News

Understanding this comes down to what author Tom Robbins wrote in his 1970s novel Even Cowgirls Get The Blues: "The state of the world was desperate, as usual." That is the basic message of the news reporting. Knowing that, we can begin to unhook ourselves from our addiction to consuming news, bit by bit. I am still in the process.

Awareness is the key

Instead, we can start replacing that consumption with what Hanh suggests. We can "…practice looking deeply into the nature of what we consume every day…consuming mindfully is the only way to protect ourselves and our society from the violence that is overwhelming us."

Nourishing Peace and Happiness Through Conscious Consumption

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

We Bring peace by becoming more aware of what we consume.

Thich Nhat Hanh, a buddhist monk writing in Calming the Fearful Mind, speaks of four nutriments that we consume:

1) Edible food,

2) Sensory food,

3) Our deepest desire and

4) Consciousness.

The First Nutrient, Food:

Hanh says this: most of us were born with a healthy body, but we can destroy that body by consuming food unmindfully and eating foods that create illness.

"If we use drugs, drink alcohol, or smoke cigarettes, we are consuming poisons that destroy our body and mind…our body does not belong to us alone; it belongs to our ancestors, our family, and our children as well. Your body is the continuation of your ancestors. You have to take good care of it so you can transmit your best to your children and your grandchildren, your partner, and your community."

Hanh recommends no meat eating. I respectfully disagree with him on this point based on my research of Dr. Weston A. Price's work Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, I take his point that:

"We eat in such a way that we destroy the planet Earth."

But Sun Bear talked of vegetarians who came to his workshops in eastern Washington State. They were taken aback somewhat that he ate meat. Then he noticed how they ripped vegetables out of the ground without gratefulness and in a violent way. Sun Bear's point was that we eat mindfully and give thanks to the food for giving up its life so we may nourish ourselves and live. And that applied not just to animals, but to vegetables and fruits and to everything we eat.

Hanh again:

"When we eat mindfully, we maintain our awareness of our interdependence with other beings and this awareness helps us maintain compassion in our heart. When we with compassion, happiness arises."

Your mission, should you decide to accept, is to pause before eating, focus on your food, give thanks with each mouthful, eat slower. You may choose to smile and say "I love you" to the food you are eating. In this way, we can become more aware and that awareness can help to release joy and happiness, which we can choose to share with others.

New Super Bug Hits the US. The “Ferrari” of Viruses: Fast Moving, Well Designed. Mastery Newsletter February 2013

MASTERY NEWSLETTER Dedicated to Health, Wealth and Fr~eedom

New Super Bug Hits the US

Extremely Contagious, Easy to Get, Hard to Prevent

It is The “Ferrari” of Viruses: Fast Moving, Well Designed

Makes People Violently Ill, No One is Immune

Lives for Weeks on Hard Surfaces

                                                 What You Can Do

Unlike the regular flu bug which is bad enough, this new form of norovirus can live on hard surfaces for weeks. That means door handles, coffee makers, escalator handrails. Regular detergents don’t work on it. Hand sanitizers don’t kill it. It has a new and unique shape.

The regular flu bug is transmitted through the air and only lives for two to eight hours on hard surfaces. This new form can linger for weeks. Once affected, the symptoms come on quickly, within hours of being exposed.

The good news? For most, it will run its course in two to three days. “A horrible two to three days” according to ABC News medical correspondent Dr. Richard Besser.

You can see the ABC News story and what Dr. Besser recommends here: http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/powerful-norovirus-spreads-america-18318770

                                             Effective Protocols for the Flu

1. Wash Your Hands. Regular medicine and alternative therapists agree on this one. Consider stepping it up with this new norovirus now ripping through America. (It started in Australia, so it may hit your corner of the world as well.)

2.Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. If possible, avoid close contact with those, who are sick and, if you are sick, avoid close contact with those who are well.

3. Exercise. No one disagrees that regular exercise can help the immune system to be more effective in fighting foreign pathogens. (Over exercise, though, can decrease immune functions. See Protocol #19 in The Zen of Joy for more on this:http://www.zenofjoy.com )

4. The Flu "Shot" Will Not Work. Not against this new bug. While there is disagreement about whether flu shots work well against other strains of the bug, there is none about this strain.

5. Reduce Stress. If your body is having to deal with stress, there are fewer resources left over to deal with invading bugs. Laughter is the #1 stress reducer. The trick is it takes 10-15 minutes of sustained laughter to produce enough of the "feel-good" hormones like endorphins to crowd out the stress hormones. You can search for laughing babies on the net or you can download my no-cost video to laugh along with me daily: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/

6. Get Plenty of Rest. Again, if your body is tired, it will be harder to fight the bugs.

7. Optimize Your Friendly Bacteria. Regular use of fermented foods as well as high quality probiotics can radically optimize the function of your immune response.

8. Reduce Sugar and Processed Foods. Fitness and health expert Jack Lalanne had a simple test for what to put in your mouth: "If man made it, don't eat it." Sugar for example, feeds the unfriendly bacteria.

9. Watch Your Vitamin D levels. Many "alternative' therapists believe flu "season" is nothing more or less than a lack of Vitamin D from less sunshine in the colder months. "According to the latest review by Carole Baggerly (Grassrootshealth.org), adults need about 8,000 IU's a day. Be sure to take vitamin K2 if you are taking high dose oral vitamin D as it has a powerful synergy and will help prevent any D toxicity." -Dr. Mercola. also from Dr. Mercola:

10. Take a High Quality Source of Animal-Based Omega-3 Fats. Increase your intake of healthy and essential fats like the omega-3 found in krill oil, which is crucial for maintaining health. It is also vitally important to avoid damaged omega-6 oils that are trans fats and in processed foods as it will seriously damage your immune response.

The following tips are from an article in NaturalNews.com: http://www.naturalnews.com/038663_flu_season_treatment_elderberry.html

"11.Take elderberry extract. Elderberry has been shown in several clinical studies to reduce the duration and severity of flu symptoms, and it is safe for children.

12. Take echinacea. It will help the body defend itself against viruses.

13. Vitamin C in hefty doses (6,000 – 20,000 mg/day) is a good idea as well. Children's doses are usually about 1/3 that of adults.

14. Vitamin A is helpful for viruses at a dosage of 20,000 – 40,000 IU/day.

15. Start taking a Yin Chiao Chinese herbal formula at the first onset of viral symptoms. These are usually available at health food stores and through online suppliers. The two primary herbal ingredients are Lonicera and Forsythia (Jin Yin Hua and Lian Chiao). A more specific Chinese herbal formula for flu symptoms with muscle aching and sinus congestion is Gan Mao Ling. These are inexpensive and everyone would do well to stock these two formulas in your first aid kit.

16. Homeopathic medicines are also mainstays in the treatment of flu symptoms. Often the most important homeopathic is Gelsemium, characterized by chilliness, lack of thirst, severe aching, and severe tiredness with headache and congestion. By contrast Bryonia is a homeopathic flu remedy for flu symptoms if you feel warm and want cool drinks and cool air, you are thirsty, and have bad headaches and achiness. These medicines are also perfectly safe for children. Take a 12 or 30 strength of one of these homeopathics every few hours until you feel much better.

This holistic treatment program along with plenty of water, soups, and fresh fruits will get you feeling back to normal and assure that you avoid the complications that sometimes accompany seasonal flus.

Lots of new info and filling in the blanks…he knows about the Federal Reserve System. He even talks about something no one else I have talked to or heard from knew…that George Orwell's book 1984 was originally titled 1948. Means says the publishers made him change it. I read that Orwell's friend Anthony Burgess said that it was Orwell's friends who persuaded him.
The friends thought it was too much for people to take that what was going on in the book was actually happening in 1948, so they got him to make it a future world.

Two Great Needs All Humans Have

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

These great needs are self–evident once we reflect on them. These two great needs also appear to be implanted into other sentient beings and all of life.

The first great need is growth.

"If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we aren't really living." ~ Gail Sheehy

Everything in nature grows. Plants, animals, humans. This growth is continuous throughout the entire life span of the plant, animal or human.

The only creature in all of nature that wants to tinker with this process is the human. With the myth of the un-natural state of “retirement,” we have attempted a massive social experiment to stop our natural growth.

Under the guise of “taking it easy,” we have persuaded a few generations now to try to alter our natural inclination and built in impulse to continue to grow all of our lives…until our last breath. For that is how we are built: to continue to grow and learn until we are no longer able. It is part of what makes for a fulfilling life.

Instead, persuasive programming has many believing that their learning or “education” is finished when their years at school are done. As anyone who has entered a profession, calling, trade or career knows, the real learning starts on entering that profession, calling, trade or career. Often times, we must unlearn much of what we have been taught in school to succeed in our life’s choice of occupation. And as masters of their craft know, the learning never stops. There is always more to be learned, even after attaining “mastery.”

The Three Most Dangerous Words to Our Growth

We would do well to adopt the Zen attitude of “beginner’s mind.” This attitude is what most readily allows more new learning to enter. The opposite of beginner’s mind is the attitude that we know it all. Motivational speaker and author T. Harv Eker warns us that the three most dangerous words in the language are: “I know that.”

Upon coming on new information, if we allow ourselves to respond with those words, even internally, we risk shutting off learning anything new. “I know that” shunts the new information into a pigeon hole in our minds without ever opening up the envelope to see what is inside.

This is the way many operate. We can hardly blame them for it. The programming we receive when young is persuasive and it takes great effort to undo it. That we must undo this programming is critical to our continuous learning and therefore fulfillment in life.

“If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties.”
–Francis Bacon

The second great need is contribution.

Again, the myth of retirement cuts off this need at the knees. When we give into the persuasive programming to “take it easy” at a certain arbitrary age, we again cut off an avenue to leading fulfilling lives.

Great sages like Mother Teresa, Michelangelo, Ramana Maharshi, Jesus, Peace Pilgrim, Ghandi and many others show us by the example of their lives how contribution enhances the riches that are available to us.

This life is not about getting, it is about giving. The great paradox for us to discover in this life is that whenever we give love we are not diminished by the giving. On the contrary, we always receive much more than we give.

Making a contribution enriches us. Whether we comfort a hurt child or give a present from the heart, we feel good. This feeling good is nature’s “feedback loop.” It tells us this is right, do more of this. Yet, what do many of us do? We revert right back to the “Gimme” philosophy or attitude. “What’s in it for me?”

“Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened.” -Sir Winston Churchill

What riches might await us if we nurtured our giving nature?

I contend that giving is our true nature, that the act of continuously making contributions, small, large or in between, is what gives meaning to life. This is where the “juice” of life is.

Your mission, should you decide to accept,
is to reflect on how can you continue to learn thereby keeping the grey cells active and slowing down the aging process and then doing it.

Your mission also is to opening up to the awareness of how to make contributions in your life. Consider that even paying a compliment to a friend or anyone near you is a contribution. Sending a note or email of thanks or appreciation is a contribution. The more we do it, the easier it becomes to continue.

Warning: you may find yourself getting addicted to both continuous learning and to contribution. These addictions may be hard to break.

“Most People Do Not Wish To Be Free” – Peace Pilgrim

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Joy, Energy and Health

"THE SIMPLIFICATION OF LIFE is one of the steps to inner peace. A persistent simplification will create an inner and outer well-being that places harmony in one's life. For me this began with a discovery of the meaninglessness of possessions beyond my actual and immediate needs. As soon as I had brought myself down to need level, I began to feel a wonderful harmony in my life between inner and outer well-being, between spiritual and material well-being.

Some people seem to think that my life dedicated to simplicity and service is austere and joyless, but they do not know the freedom of simplicity. I am thankful to God every moment of my life for the great riches that have been showered upon me. My life is full and good but never overcrowded. If life is overcrowded then you are doing more than is required for you to do.

My life had been bogged down; I felt greedy before I took my vow of simplicity: I shall not accept more than I need while others in the world have less than they need.

You may also have come out of a life where you had too many things. When you have simplified your life, I'm sure you will feel as free as I feel. If your motive is one of giving then you will be given whatever you need.

In my life, what I want and what I need are exactly the same. Anything in excess of needs is burdensome to me. You couldn't give me anything I don't need. I am penniless, but have difficulty remaining so. Several of my well meaning, well-to-do friends have offered me large sums of money, which I of course refused.

I talked to one person who thought I was being deprived of some of the "pleasures" of life. But none of the things I do not use or do not do were taken away from me. I just did not include them when I was choosing a harmonious life. I just had no interest whatsoever in them.

I am not a slave to comfort and convenience. I wouldn't be a pilgrim if I were. We can allow false beliefs to govern our lives and be enslaved by them. Most people do not wish to be free. They would prefer to moan and chafe about how impossible it is to give up their various enslavements to possessions, food, drink, smoking, and so forth. It is not that they can't give them up–they don't really want to give them up. " -Peace Pilgrim. Her Life and Work in Her Own Words

How to be More Effective and Efficient with Power Blocks

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

Humans are designed more for spurts than the slogging long haul. Yet, life is a "long haul."

How to reconcile these two factors?

"Multi-tasking" does not work most of the time

Another factor to throw more confusion into the mix: "Multi-tasking" is more or less a misnomer. We can't do it very well. There are obvious exceptions: waiting on hold on the phone is a good one. Waiting is so passive that we might as well be doing something else with the time. But for the most part when we try we end up doing neither task well and often having to do one or both of them again. Time wasted.

Focus on one task at a time and group similar tasks together

Instead, what makes more sense given the way humans are wired is to focus on one task at a time and to group similar tasks together. The challenge is that keeping a laser like focus all through the day is impossible for most of us.

Power Blocks focus the energy

What is possible is for us to keep a sharp focus for a limited period. Here is a suggestion: Break your day up into blocks of 45-50 minutes of focus, followed by a short 10-15 minute break. 55 and 5 minutes can work as well. Experiment to see what works best for you. Some days it might be 50 minutes and some days 55 minutes.

If you get on a roll and feeling the energy moving you along on and you are enjoying the feeling of accomplishment, try jutting two Power Blocks together to make 90 minutes before taking a break. This is all very flexible.

High Energy = Getting more done

The goal is to keep your energy up. Having high energy usually means we are able to accomplish more than low energy. This is a way to energize yourself even on what can at first feel like a low energy day.

Keep track of your time

You may choose to note down your beginning and ending times for the Power Blocks. I am a great believer in accountability. Keeping track of start and stop times goes a long way to making this work. You are being accountable to yourself.

Hydrate, snack

The quick break does not have to be a "coffee" break. As we know coffee can be a quick "pick-me-up" and it can also be a "let-me-down" a short time after. You could choose to drink a glass or two of water at the breaks. This helps to keep the body hydrated. Snacks of nuts and/or fruit can be helpful as well.

My personal experience with this is that it has helped to get me focused and get more done in a shorter amount of time. Knowing that there is a break coming up allows me to keep my "nose to the grindstone" as it were until the break.

Rewards work

The break is kind of a reward and you know what? We humans love rewards. A little reward every hour or so goes a long way. It creates a little burst of positive feeling. There are actually lots of studies now showing that when we are happier, we can accomplish more. Why they needed studies to show that just shows how far off the track we have gone. We all have had times when we were energized, on a roll, getting things done and felt great. The Power Block concept is a way to get on a roll…every day.

Are You Putting “50 Octane Fuel” Into Your Biological “Engine?”

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

How a Warrior Deals with the Flu

I have friends who think I’m crazy. You see, I am a “health nut.” At least, that’s the way many of my friends see me.

F.J. says he can see that I have a passion for it. When I start talking about I get on a roll and can’t seem to stop. Maybe, F.J. says, you will have the last laugh and outlive us all.

When I showed off my cupboard with three shelves full of vitamins and supplements, I was quick to add that those may not be the secret to health and longevity at all. There are lots of examples nowadays of elders who are living vibrant lives in their 90s and even past 100 who don’t take supplements and seem to do just fine.

So, What is Their Secret to a Long and Health Life?

But before we get into that, let’s address the reasons why you may want to consider becoming a student of health.

First, there is this: if you do what everyone else is doing, you will likely get the same kinds of results. What is everyone else doing? Not studying health, for one thing.

And what are they getting? Let’s just look around and see.

Cancer, despite the billions thrown into research, has been and is increasing.

Heart disease, despite the billions thrown into research, is increasing.

Type 2 Diabetes is increasing. This used to be called “adult on set” diabetes because it differed from the Type 1 that a person is born with, usually only occurring in adults and not in children.

Despite the fortune thrown into research, Type 2 diabetes is increasing and has afflicted children as young as eight years old!

So…if you do as everyone else is doing, being in reactive mode to your health, maybe you can expect the same results as everyone else.

What do I mean by “reactive mode?” Well, it means waiting until there is a health condition and then going to the doctor (or naturopath, herbalist, physiotherapist, acupuncturist or other alternative therapist) and asking to get fixed.

We are certainly supported in this reactive mode. In recent decades, for example, we have seen an explosion of the number of TV ads for many different drugs. The drug companies are now targeting the consumer directly.

Ask yourself this: Would they be doing it if it was not working? TV ads are expensive as we hear every year about how many millions it costs for one single Super Bowl ad during the final game of the American Football season.

Would Drug Companies Spend Millions on TV Ads if They Didn't Work?

So if drug companies are spending the millions, they must be getting a return on their investment. In other word, every time an ad for erectile dysfunction appears on TV, a certain number of men troop down to their doctor and ask for that drug or something like it.

TV is a great advertising medium because it tends to work. With the advent of MTV and their quick cuts, attention spans have shortened dramatically in the last decades. Now, with the internet and smart phones and Twitter, we see even more of a shrinkage of attention spans.

So, we are being trained more and more to go for the quick fix. Few are looking for the root cause of any condition. If I have itchy skin, just give me the pill or the salve to solve it.

The problem with attacking symptoms is that we may get relief from the condition for awhile, but if we root out the cause, it can reappear.

Are We Being Loaded Down with Toxins?

My friend, the Master Herbalist Dr. Terry Willard, puts it this way. Our bodies are designed to cleanse themselves of toxins. It’s a natural process that tends to occur at change of season time. And guess what coincides with change of season time? Colds and flus. Colds and flus are the symptoms of the body flushing out toxins. If we take medication to stop the process, that drives the toxins deeper into the cells and they come out again another time, only with more severe symptoms. And what do we do? We take stronger medication to drive the toxins back down into the cells, even deeper this time. According to Terry, eventually the symptoms can get so severe as to create cancer.

Instead of attacking the symptoms of the flu, a natural healing approach is to encourage the flushing out of the toxins. And in fact, natural healing approach would have us be proactive and do a cleanse prior to change of season time so that we don’t have to suffer from the effects of cold and flus as much.

This brings us to the other approach to health: being proactive.

Being proactive to me means the active study of health.

                                          Socrates said: "Know Thyself."

This may be the greatest reason for undertaking a life-long study of health. Instead of being reactive and waiting for the dis-eases, minor and/or major, to show up in our lives, we can choose to be proactive and study how our bodies, minds, emotions and spiritual selves operate and fine tune those operations to minimize health problems.

Yes, yes, I know. I seem obsessed with it. And it is easy to throw up our hands in the air when we hear the conflicting news reports. Vitamin E is good for you. Whoops, latest research shows taking Vitamin is now bad for you. “Oh, what the heck. I give up. How’s a guy supposed to make any sense of it? I’m just going to live my life. Forget all this health stuff.”

Is there any possibility that the “powers-that-be” designed it all so you would do exactly that? (Oh dear, now he’s sounding like a Conspiracy Theorist.)

Are You Putting "50 Octane Fuel" in Your Body?

Let me ask you this? Would you put 50 octane gasoline in your car? “Are you crazy? Everyone knows that would ruin the engine in no time. Why would I do that?”

Well, 50 octane fuel might be half the price. “Yeah, but the savings are not worth it because it will cost me more to replace the engine than I save in gasoline.”

All right then, why would you put 50 octane or more closely 20 octane fuel into your body? Your car engine you can replace, but you only have one body. And while you can get your heart replaced, why do though that if you don’t have to.

My friends sometimes wonder why I bother with organic food. What’s the difference, really?

Here are the reasons.

“The warrior is never available. Never is he standing on the street waiting to be clobbered.” –Robert S. deRopp in The Warrior’s Way

Food is not what it was in our grandparents’ day. Meat and dairy are two food categories I only use in organic form. Both have had hormones and antibiotics added to their feed in recent decades. I don’t want those in my body, thankyouverymuch.

In the 1950s, there were a handful of food additives allowed in food. (“Food additive” is Newspeak for chemicals.) Now, I am told, there are 60,000 different food additives. Dr. Willard estimates that the average North American is taking in 10% of their bodyweight in food additives (read pure chemicals) in their diet annually. Our bodies are not designed to handle that overload of chemicals.

Might this be a reason why there is such an increase in diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes, et al?

                                          The Modern "Minefield"

The modern world has become a minefield. We have numbers of toxins in our homes from air fresheners to flame retardants to shampoos to toothpaste and the list goes on.

Again, the average person hearing all this reacts by mentally throwing up their hands, giving up and saying: “It’s all too much. I am just going to live my life. You have to die of something. I might as well not become a worry-wart. Who’s got time to spend their lives being scared about every doggone little thing they say causes cancer? Get a life!”

The bad news is the average person is right! Worry and fear by themselves will make you life a misery. So worry and fear are no answer to the modern challenges we face.

But neither is sticking your head in the sand, I would contend.

You can be a "Warrior" or a "Victim." Your choice.

I contend that not studying health and following Socrates’ advice to “know thyself” is being a victim.

And studying how we humans operate and not stepping on all the landmines that now exist (that did not in our parents’ and grandparents’ time) is being a warrior.

The good news? I have done much of the study for you. My 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health covers many of the mine fields that exist, how to sidestep those mines. P.S. #1: Socrates said: “Know Thyself.” That instruction is not much different than  the car mechanic being told to know the engine they are working with and what kind of fuel and upkeep it needs. Yet many of us know how to take care of our cars better than we know how to take care of our bodies. The car is replaceable. Our bodies are not. Does it not make sense to learn at least as much about how our bodies operate as we know about the maintenance schedule on our cars. I’ll bet you have a rough idea when your next oil change should be. Do you know when your next “body cleanse” should be?

P.S. #2: A “Warrior” is proactive. While being proactive with your health is no guarantee of perfect health, it can give you an edge in sidestepping some of the worst afflictions the “Victim” is afflicted with. Fewer down days with the flu may just be the least of the benefits. When “Warriors” take responsibility for their own health, they may find fewer dis-eases of all kinds…possibly even helping to sidestep the major afflictions such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

P.S. #3: The “Victim” relies on outside authorities be they doctors, naturopaths or other experts. “Warriors” take advice from outside authorities and also do their own research and work on being proactive. “108 Tips for more Joy, Energy and Health” is a great way to cut through the confusion caused by the modern day “information overload.” You can have this free email course here: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/

How to Release Fear, Anxiety and Frustrations…Instantly

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

A Specific Technique That Also Normalizes Blood Pressure, Boosts the Immune System, Improves Circulation, Stimulates Digestion, Improves Your Breathing and Fights Cancer.

The comedic commentator Stephen Colbert said I dare anyone to be afraid when they are laughing. It can’t be done. Or words to that effect.

That’s the shortest story possible:

Laughter and fear are mutually exclusive.

If you can find a way to laugh you lose the fears immediately. Laughter also relieves any lingering anxiety and releases frustrations. I don’t mean to say that fears, anxieties and/or frustrations won’t come back. They can and do. And there is a way to address that as well.

The first trick is how to find a way to laugh if you caught in the grip of a paralyzing fear, or anxiety or frustration.

The good news is that it can be done. It is a skill which can be learned. If we have created neural pathways that support these negative emotions, we can also create different pathways that release them.

My skill in releasing these emotions was developed with the help of Laughter Yoga. This is the brainchild of a medical doctor in India, Dr. Madan Kataria. While doing research on the concept that “Laughter is the best medicine,” he decided to start a laughter club for himself and other to self-administer this “best medicine.” It became so successful that there are now over 7,000 Laughter Yoga clubs in over 70 countries around the world.

The idea is super simple. We can laugh for no reason. We can just laugh for its own sake. One easy way to approach it is to think of laughter as exercise and just move our diaphragm up and down faking laughter. You might be surprised to learn that your body does not know the difference between fake laughter and real laughter. You will get the same health benefits either way!

I had a good example last night. I was shaking the water off my partial denture when is slipped from my hand into the sink and broke into two pieces. Aaargh! Now, in the past, losing a tooth has created a great deal of anxiety and an overwhelming cascade of negative emotion. This event started out the same way. I could “see” the pathway to those emotions opening up.

Instead, here is what happened: I immediately remembered to laugh. The laughter released most of the negative emotion and also many of the negative thoughts. It would have been easy to beat myself up and go into some thought loops about what a stupid guy I was and why can’t I be more careful and what an idiot and what is this going to cost me? $1800 is the replacement cost on a denture like that one…and on and on and on…

Instead I could “see” and “feel” all those thoughts come up and just as quickly as they came up, I let them go. I laughed some more at how easy it was to liberate myself from the thought and the associated feelings. I easily fell asleep without any thought “loops” running around and just trusted that the morning would provide solutions and even if the worst happened, it was just money and I would live and I would have my dentures back fairly soon.

After a good night’s sleep, I phoned my denturist, who is a friend, and he said he can fix it in no more than two hours. Whew. At noon, I will drive the one hour to his office and get it done.

Interestingly enough, one of the things on my TO DO LIST is to listen to some hours of a “clearing” program I have purchased. I wondered when I might have time to do it. Now, I have two hours of travel time and two hours of waiting time to dive into those audios. Interesting how the Universe works. Obviously, these clearing audios are important and I am meant to do them. That is why the Universe created time for me to dive into them. 

There are a couple of ways to learn this empowering skill of laughing at so-called misfortunes. “So-called” because we never know what seeds of benefits are contained in any “bad” luck we may experience. The Buddha said if you really understood life, you would throw your head back and laugh uproariously…or words to that effect.

So your mission should you decide to accept: Develop the skill of laughing when something goes awry. It will serve you well by keeping you in a good mood to tackle the many challenges of life more effectively and support your health in many ways also.

One way is to attend Laughter Yoga classes. Here in Victoria, we have 5 different clubs going at the moment: http://victorialaughteryogaclub.wordpress.com/laughter-schedule/

Elsewhere, you can search for a Laughter Yoga club near you.

The second way is to access the 15 minute laughter video on my site and laugh along with me as often as you like. I found that daily laughter develops neural pathways so I can let go of any “negative” reactions to all kinds of events: drivers cutting me off, people yelling at me, anxieties about money (that’s a biggie), even anger at neighbours who wake me up at 1 in the morning. (I admit that one is tougher, but I am working on it.)

Here is my laugher video and you will note it comes with an email course focusing on health tips: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/ You will see it on the right side of the page as the “Authentic Joy” video. Let me know how it goes.

-Matti

P.S. Laughter also benefits your health in many other ways: Normalizes Blood Pressure, Boosts the Immune System, Improves Circulation, Stimulates Digestion, Improves Your Breathing and Fights Cancer.

So, as well as releasing fear, anxiety and frustrations, you get a whole cocktail of good hormones. Here is what Stephen Colbert says about laughter:

“I would say laughter is the best medicine. But it’s more than that. It’s an entire regime of antibiotics and steroids. Laughter brings the swelling down on our national psyche, and then applies an antibiotic cream… Obviously, it’s a challenge to make light of the darkness but, um, it’s better than crying about it.”
