<p>	Many believe a lottery win would change their lives for the better.</p>
<p>	As Marci Shimoff shows from her study of the research on happiness, a lottery win does little to increase our long term happiness.</p>
<p>	After the initial thrill wears off, studies show people come to their earlier level of happiness, or their &ldquo;happiness set-point.&rdquo;</p>
<p>	A January 2011 report from CNN shows that many lottery winners actually become more miserable. Some spend it all and go into debt. Friends bug them for money, their social relationships get worse, they lose friends.</p>
<p>	A Quebec, Canada woman won multi millions in a lottery, lost it all, lost her friends, family, husband and almost lost her life. She then studied a number of other lottery winners and found that to be the norm. </p>
<p>	The CNN report also quotes studies showing that we do increase our level of happiness as our incomes increase&#8230;but only up to a point.</p>
<p>	That point is about $75,000 a year. After that, it levels off. (From a 2010 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.)<br />
	<span style="color:#00f;"><strong><br />
	Be a Giver</strong></span></p>
<p>	<em>&ldquo;It&#39;s a common experience that giving away money makes people feel good, and science backs that up. A 2008 study in Science found that people were happier spending $20 on others than they were on themselves. In general, research supports the idea that people feel good when they feel they are making an impact with their money in a personal way and a sense of shame when they are stingy.&rdquo;</em> &ndash;CNN January 7, 20111</p>
<p>	Researcher Michael Norton reports on similar studies his team conducted in Canada and Uganda. They got the same results. People who spend money on others felt better and happier. </p>
<p>	Further, it was not the amount of money spent that made the difference. Even small amounts given created a sense of happiness in the giver. </p>
<p>	The Gallup polling organization also showed a positive correlation between people who contributed to charity and happiness. </p>
<p>	<span style="color:#00f;"><strong>Will it work for you and I?</strong></span></p>
<p>	This is where the rubber meets the road. The only way to find out is to experiment. </p>
<p>	Your mission, should you decide to accept, is to find a way to give. Remember, it matters not what the amount is. Just ask the question, &ldquo;What can I do to benefit someone?&rdquo; Then do it. Notice the result. </p>
<p>	Further, when we spend money on ourselves, studies show we get more satisfaction from spending it on experiences rather than things.<br />

	Is Iceland Showing Us The Way? Bankers and Politicians Charged. No Money to the Banks, Mortgages Forgiven</strong></p>
<p>	In Iceland, the people have made the government resign, the primary banks have been nationalized and it was decided not to pay the debt that these created with Great Britain and Holland due to their bad financial politics, and a public assembly has been created to rewrite the constitution.</p>
<p>	And all of this has been done in a peaceful way. A whole revolution against the powers that have created the current crisis.</p>
<p>	This is why there hasn&rsquo;t been any publicity during the last two years: What would happen if the rest of the EU citizens took this as an example? What would happen if the US citizens took this as an example?</p>
<p>	This is a summary of the facts:</p>
<p>	2008. The main bank of the country is nationalized. The Krona, the currency of Iceland devaluates and the stock market stops. The country is in bankruptcy</p>
<p>	2008. The citizens protest in front of parliament and manage to get new elections that make the resignation of the prime minister and his whole government.</p>
<p>	The country is in bad economic situation. A law proposes paying back the debt to Great Britain and Holland through the payment of 3,500 million euros, which will be paid by the people of Iceland monthly during the next 15 years, with a 5.5% interest.</p>
<p>	2010. The people go out in the streets and demand a referendum. In January 2010 the president denies the approval and announces a popular meeting.</p>
<p>	In March the referendum and the denial of payment is voted in by 93%. Meanwhile the government has initiated an investigation to bring to justice those responsible for the crisis, and many high level executives and bankers are arrested.</p>
<p>	The Interpol dictates an order that make all the implicated parties leave the country.</p>
<p>	In this crisis an assembly is elected to rewrite a new Constitution which can include the lessons learned from this, and which will substitute the current one (a copy of the Danish Constitution). 25 citizens are chosen, with no political affiliation, out of the 522 candidates. For candidacy all that was needed was to be an adult and have the support of 30 people.</p>
<p>	The constitutional assembly starts in February of 2011 to present the &lsquo;carta magna&rsquo; from the recommendations given by the different assemblies happening throughout the country. It must be approved by the current Parliament and by the one constituted through the next legislative elections.</p>
<p>	So in summary of the Icelandic revolution: -resignation of the whole government -nationalization of the bank. -referendum so that the people can decide over the economic decisions. -incarcerating the responsible parties -rewriting of the constitution by its people. <br />

<p>	This comes from the book &ldquo;Aspire&rdquo; by Kevin Hall, a wonderful read; inspirational, powerful and full of love. <a href="http://powerofwords.com/ ">http://powerofwords.com/ </a></p>
<p>	Kevin tells the story of how he was introduced to &ldquo;The Secret Word.&rdquo; It is an ancient Hindi word roughly translating to our word &ldquo;charity&rdquo; but with a deeper meaning. </p>
<p>	The word is &ldquo;Genshai.&rdquo; </p>
<p>	Kevin&rsquo;s mentor, an Indian shop keeper in Vienna, explained: &ldquo;It means that you should never treat another person in a manner that would make them feel small&#8230;Genshai means that you should never treat anyone small&#8212;and that includes yourself!&rdquo;</p>
<p>	The shop keeper he was taught as a child to &ldquo;&#8230;never look at, touch, or address another person in a way that would make them feel small. If I were to walk by a beggar in the street and casually toss him a coin, I would not be practicing Genshai. But if I knelt down on my knees and looked him in the eye when I placed that coin in his hand, that coin became love. Then and only then, after I had exhibited pure, unconditional brotherly love, would I become a true practitioner of Genshai.&rdquo;</p>
<p>	He asked Kevin to promise he would never, ever treat himself small again.</p>
<p>	So&#8230;</p>
<p>	Your mission for this week, should you decide to accept, is:</p>
<p>	Do not think, say or do anything that would make you feel small. </p>
<p>	If you have been diligently practicing Protocol #15, you have already begun the process. </p>
<p>	Now, it is time for us to pay attention throughout the day about any thoughts, words and deeds that cause us to feel small. </p>
<p>	If and when you find a thought that feels unpleasant, here is a technique that works for me: Smile, say to your inner critic: &ldquo;Thank you for sharing. Now, I choose to replace that thought with (change the negative thought to its polar opposite).&rdquo;</p>
<p>	Here is an example. When I make a mistake and the thought that might arise is: &ldquo;Of, what an idiot I am for making such a stupid mistake.&rdquo;</p>
<p>	I can catch that thought and respond: &ldquo;Thank you for sharing. I am human and I make mistakes from time to time. I choose to let go of any negative judgment of myself, learn from the mistake and move on. I choose to feel good about myself. I am a child of God. I am a worthy human being.&rdquo;</p>
<p>	Or I can say: &ldquo;Why is it so easy for me to learn from my mistakes and feel good about myself?&rdquo; </p>
<p>

<p>	Colin Tipping&rsquo;s book RADICAL FORGIVENESS. MAKING ROOM FOR THE MIRACLE: &ldquo;Ninety percent of healing occurs when you become willing to let in the idea that your soul has lovingly created this situation for you.&rdquo;</p>
<p>	Tipping believes we create our experiences, both good and bad, for the development of our souls. We attract people into our lives to show us what needs healing. He suggests we express gratitude to the person for showing us the lessons we need to learn.</p>
<p>	If we learn the lesson, we don&rsquo;t keep repeating it. If we don&rsquo;t learn the lesson, we keep repeating the same scenario over and over again with a different set of characters.</p>
<p>	Dr. Robert Enright&rsquo;s book <strong>FORGIVENESS IS A CHOICE: A STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR RESOLVING ANGER AND RESTORING HOPE</strong> has a 4 step process. <br />
	1. Uncover the source of the anger. <br />
	2. Decide to forgive. <br />
	3. Develop an understanding for the person I am angry with. <br />
	4. Notice how the process of forgiveness has changed me now and how it will change me in the future.<br />

<p>	&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Maxin Gorky said, &ldquo;I can understand&#8212;that&rsquo;s why I am feeling sad. This country must be joyless; otherwise there is no need for so many entertainments.&rsquo;</p>
<p>	&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Only a joyless person needs entertainment. The more joyless the world becomes, the more we need the TV, films, tinsel towns, and a thousand and one things. We need alcohol more and more, we need new kinds of drugs more and more&#8212;just to avoid the misery that we are, just not to face the anguish that we are, just somehow to forget it all. But by forgetting it nothing is achieved. </p>
<p>	&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; So joy is to enter into your own self. In the beginning it is difficult, arduous. In the beginning you will have to face misery; the path is very mountainous. But the deeper you enter into it, the greater the payoff, the greater the reward.&rdquo; </p>

<p>	Some folks start worrying or getting concerned about their memory when they get into their 50s or 60s. </p>
<p>	Believe it or not, there is nothing to worry about.</p>
<p>	This is another example of conditioning or programming (I dare not call it brainwashing, of course).</p>
<p>	We have messages implanted in us over a lifetime that we can get forgetful at this age. (I hesitate to call it &lsquo;old age&rsquo; for obvious reasons; if Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara can have a fulfilling life in his late 90s, why can&rsquo;t we? Then our 60s is &lsquo;middle age.&rsquo;)</p>
<p>	Understandably, some folks can be concerned, especially if there is a history of dementia in the family. </p>
<p>	Let&rsquo;s dissect this fear into its component parts and see what we have.</p>
<p>	First, the fear of dementia &ldquo;running in the family,&rdquo; if my mother/father/uncle/aunt had this, it must be in my DNA or genetic makeup.</p>
<p>	Illnesses/conditions/diseases have very little genetic component, despite the general belief in the power of family genetic makeup. </p>
<p>	Genetics or DNA make up maybe 5 or 10% of the reason for a predisposition to any condition, be it cancer, diabetes, heart disease or Alzheimers. Your doctor may not agree with that statement, but that is the thinking among many in the &ldquo;natural healing&rdquo; community.</p>
<p>	Further, we can actually influence and even change DNA with habits, practices, lifestyle decisions, food, supplements, exercise, meditation, positive mental imaging and the list goes on. </p>
<p>	In other words, WE ARE NOT VICTIMS. </p>
<p>	We can choose to have power. </p>
<p>	So, even if the entire family succumbed to mental derangement and/or dementia, that is not a final sentence for us!</p>
<p>	We can choose to learn what tools, techniques and practices can avert that sentence. </p>
<p>	You may think: &ldquo;Come on! I have eyes to see. Can&rsquo;t you see families where mom and dad and all the children are overweight? That&rsquo;s gotta be in the genetic makeup.&rdquo;</p>
<p>	There is a simple answer to that: They are all eating the same, exercising the same, thinking the same and that may have nothing to with DNA, just lifestyle decisions passed on from the parents.</p>
<p>
	Secondly, if we closely analyze it, we may find that we are not any more forgetful than we were in our 20s, 30s or 40s. </p>
<p>	But we have been bombarded with information that suggests we lose memory in our &ldquo;old age.&rdquo; </p>
<p>	So, we notice that we walk into a room and forget why we are there. &ldquo;What did I come in here for??&rdquo;</p>
<p>	Guess what? We did that all through our lives, even in our 20s. We just never thought anything about it. </p>
<p>	It is only because of the pervasive messages all through our lives that we have come to believe:<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Old people lose memory (and other faculties) and therefore, <br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Because we are getting older, we must be losing memory,<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We then are on the alert and looking for examples of memory loss,<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When it happens (as it has happened all through our lives), we believe we are on an inevitable decline of our mental faculties,<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We then get concerned,<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We then become more alert, and:<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Lo and behold, we find more examples,<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We get more concerned,<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And this becomes a downward spiral or self-fulfilling prophecy,<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We now have been enrolled in our own &ldquo;memory loss program.&rdquo;<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Whatever we focus on grows, especially if we focused on it with emotion!<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We are now well on the way to buying into the fiction that we are getting older,<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We start acting older,<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We notice we are acting older,<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We believe we are getting older (of course we are, but I mean older and weaker and losing our faculties),<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We don&rsquo;t like it (we inject emotion into the mix),<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Focus on something with thought with emotion and what do we get?<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We get what we focus on!</p>
<p>	And all because we have been taught/conditioned/programmed (I dare not say brainwashed) to believe we lose faculties as we age. So, we are on the lookout, find examples, then focus on those examples and cause them to grow. </p>
<p>	Solutions?</p>
<p>	Use it or lose it!</p>
<p>	Try Kim&rsquo;s Game.</p>
<p>	Rudyard Kipling, the English author, came back with this from India, I believe. We would practice this in Boy Scouts.</p>
<p>	One person takes about 20-24 items, places them on a table. These can be everyday stuff: a pen, a card, a book, a key, a wallet, a computer mouse, a calculator, a cup, a pen knife, a saucer, a piece of chalk. It matters not what the items are.</p>
<p>	Then the person lays a table cloth over the items. </p>
<p>	The subject then comes to the table. Person one removes the table cloth for 60 seconds. The subject tried to memorize as many of the items as possible. </p>
<p>	Most humans can remember 7 items, give or take a couple. That&rsquo;s normal. </p>
<p>	As we play the game more and more, we may find we can remember more and more of the items on the table.</p>
<p>	I can&rsquo;t remember now how many I got up to (ho ho&#8230;can&rsquo;t remember, get it?)</p>
<p>	This game ties right in with the brain&rsquo;s neuroplasticity that we covered in Tip # 15 of <strong>&quot;108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health.&quot; </strong>If you have not subscribed yet, now is a good time. <a href="http://joyenergyandhealth.com/">http://joyenergyandhealth.com/</a></p>
<p>	The more we exercise the brain, the more we increase its capacity.</p>
<p>	In fact, by now proactively focusing on increasing memory function, we are focusing on the positive memory function and taking away our learned tendency to focus on memory loss and focusing on memory increase.</p>
<p>	Whatever we focus on grows. </p>
<p>	You may have heard of Harry Lorayne, a memory expert and also a magician. Here is part of the entry in Wikipedia:</p>
<p>	&ldquo;To demonstrate his memory, Harry Lorayne would stand beside the president of the club he was visiting and be introduced to each member. The number of members of a club could reach up to 1,500. After an hour and a half, Lorayne would speak about memory for about 20 minutes and then ask if anyone had a question. He promised that he would pay any questioner whose name he could not remember a thousand dollars. He always remembered the names of every member of the audience&#8230;</p>
<p>	In 1961, Lorayne published a book called Secrets of Mind Power. The book tells readers how to improve their thinking skills for success. In Chronicles, Volume 1, Bob Dylan writes that he read Lorayne&#39;s book shortly before breaking through as a music star after finding it in the book collection of a friend.&rdquo;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Lorayne "> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Lorayne </a></p>
<p>	We are all humans. If one human (Harry Lorayne), can do that, why do we believe that we can&rsquo;t?</p>
<p>	In 2007, Lorayne published <em>&ldquo;Ageless Memory: Simple Secrets for Keeping Your Brain Young.&rdquo; </em></p>
<p>	We may not get to his level, but surely focusing on reading a book like his is better than wallowing in the self defeating thought patterns and practices of believing that we are doomed to dementia. </p>
<p>	Your mission, should you decide to accept, is to:</p>
<p>	1)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Play Kim&rsquo;s Game with a friend, and or:<br />
	2)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Get Harry Lorayne&rsquo;s book, read, digest and practice.</p>

<p>	John Robbins is the son of Irv Robbins, co-founder of the Baskin-Robbins ice cream empire. In the late 60s, John turned down the opportunity to follow in father&rsquo;s footsteps and take over the empire. In his words, he did not think the world needed a 32nd flavour of ice cream. </p>
<p>	John and his wife moved to Saltspring Island off the coast of BC, built a log cabin and held massage workshops. That&rsquo;s where I first met them, attending their workshops. They taught me much about life.</p>
<p>	In the 80s, John wrote a Pulitzer Prize winning book &ldquo;Diet for a New America.&rdquo; <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Diet-New-America-John-Robbins/dp/0915811812">http://www.amazon.com/Diet-New-America-John-Robbins/dp/0915811812</a></p>
<p>	&ldquo;Healthy at 100&rdquo; was published in 2006 and is a study of how to live a longer and, more importantly, a fuller live.</p>
<p>	Referencing a 1973 National Geographic research project into four societies whose members lived healthy, happy lives into their 80s, 90s and 100 and beyond, John discovers the root causes of their longevity and happiness.</p>
<p>	Diet and exercise play important parts as you might imagine, but another discovery bears emphasis. That is:</p>
<p>	The lack of love is a greater risk to our health and longevity than smoking. </p>
<p>	In a time when we in our so-called civilized society cast our elders into the oblivion of loneliness in &ldquo;rest homes,&rdquo; the wisdom from these societies can help us to create a more fulfilling and healthy life. </p>
<p>	Imagine a life where you have more joy, energy, health and happiness in your 80s, 90s and beyond than you had in your 20s and 30s. </p>
<p>	This is the potential of the simple practices from John&rsquo;s book that anyone at any age can choose to incorporate into their lives. </p>
<p>	Okinawa is one of the four long-lived societies studied. (The others are Vilcabamba in Peru, Abkhazians in Georgia and the Hunzas.)</p>
<p>	Here is a story from the book: </p>
<p>	&ldquo;A KARATE MASTER AT 96</p>
<p>	Okinawa is the birthplace of karate. It is also the home of Seikichi Uehara, who at the age of 96 was still teaching a rare karate-like martial art (mutubi-unundu). And he wasn&rsquo;t only teaching: he was still extraordinarily proficient, as he demonstrated on January 1, 2000. </p>
<p>	On the first day of the new millennium, Seikichi Uehara, only four shy of 100, was featured in a New Year&rsquo;s Day boxing match that was televised throughout Japan. His opponent was Katsuo Tokashiki, a thirty-nine-year-old former World Boxing Association flyweight champion, also from Okinawa. Quite a spectacle unfolded.</p>
<p>	The bout began with the young boxer, nearly sixty years the junior of Seikichi Uehara, punching powerfully and repeatedly at the elder martial artist. But his blows never landed. The old master, displaying amazing flexibility and agility for a man his age, kept evading every punch the younger man threw at him. Deftly twisting and turning, he managed to avoid the lightning fast blows of the powerful former world champion boxer. This continued for more than twenty minutes, during which time the older man never sought to strike a single blow. The young boxer, Tokashiki, was becoming increasingly exasperated and fatigued. </p>
<p>	Eventually, a moment arrived when Tokashiki dropped his guard. At that instant, the Okinawan elder martial artist deftly landed one quick blow, knocking the boxer off his feet, and the match was over. It was the first and only punch of the match. </p>
<p>	As the young boxer left the ring in a daze, he kept shaking his head in disbelief, muttering, &lsquo;I can&rsquo;t believe it! The old man beat me! I couldn&rsquo;t hit him!&rsquo;</p>
<p>	Tokashiki was stunned, but not injured. It was clearly the intent of the elder martial artist to defeat but not hurt him. The philosophy of the martial art of mutubu-unundi teaches avoiding confrontation, and calls for striking only after all other options are exhausted.</p>
<p>	When Seikichi Uehara later spoke of the match to researchers conducting the Okinawan Centenarian Study, he laughed and said, &lsquo;It was nothing. He was just too young and had not yet matured enough to beat me.&rsquo;</p>
<p>	The performance of this ninety-six-year-old man presents quite a contrast to the prevailing experience of aging in the West, where most people think it inevitable that as they age, their muscles will weaken, their reflexes slow, their eyesight deteriorate, and their physical coordination plummet. Seikichi Uehara is no doubt extraordinary even by Okinawan standards, but his example speaks vividly of the human potential for healthy aging.&rdquo;</p>
<p>	This is just one of many inspirational stories in John&rsquo;s inspirational book. </p>
<p>	There were some surprising revelations. One is a study indicating that taking calcium does basically nothing to prevent osteoporosis. What does do the trick is weight bearing exercise.</p>
<p>	This is one book to read and digest and thoroughly enjoy.</p>

<p>	A 5 Part Protocol to Increase Happiness, Joy and Productivity</strong></span></p>
<p>	For those of who are acculturated (fancy word for conditioned/programmed/trained, I-dare-not-say-brainwashed) into seeing science as the be all and end all and final arbiter of proof: </p>
<p>	The Harvard Business Review did a cover story titled: The Value of Happiness. How Employee Well-Being Drives Profits.</p>
<p>	Happiness is not a sometime, frivolous thing to be pursued on the weekends while we keep our noses to the grindstone during working hours. Happiness can make business and work more productive, effective and profitable!</p>
<p>	Shawn Achor, who spent nearly a decade at Harvard University, now delivers &ldquo;happiness trainings&rdquo; in over 40 countries. His &ldquo;TED Talk&rdquo; on Youtube on &ldquo;The Happy Secret to Better Work&rdquo; has over 800,000 views.</p>

<p>	As you will note from his presentation, his work on happiness is backed up by scientific research. He says our model for happiness is broken. We work in order to be successful so we can be happy. This model, contends Achor, does not work for this reason: every time we have a success, we move the goal posts. If we get a good job, we want a better one. If we get a good house, we want a better one. So we never reach happiness with this model.</p>
<p>	Instead, if we find away to be happy first, then success in work and business is easier. &ldquo;Your intelligence rises, your creativity rises, your energy level rises&#8230;every single business outcome improves. Your brain&#8230;is 31% more productive&#8230;you&rsquo;re 37% better at sales&#8230;&rdquo;</p>
<p>	Reversing the formula and putting happiness before success has been shown scientifically according to Achor to improve our success potential&#8230;while being happy. The dopamine that fills out system when we are positive has two functions. It makes us happier and &ldquo;It turns on all the learning centers in your brain allowing you to adapt to the world in a different way.&rdquo;</p>
<p>	Here are his 5 practices to increase happiness, to train our brains to become more positive. &ldquo;In just a two minute span of time, done for 21 days in a row, you can actually rewire your brain, allowing your brain to work more optimistically and more successfully.&rdquo;</p>
<p>	Here is the &ldquo;brain rewiring formula:&rdquo;</p>
<p>	1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Write down 3 new things you are happy for every day for 21 days. In his research with companies, Achor found that at the&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; end of 21 days, the brain starts to retain the pattern of scanning the world not for the negative, but for the positive.<br />
	2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Keep a &ldquo;Gratitude Journal.&rdquo; Journaling about one positive experience in the last 24 hours allows our brain to relive it. <br />
	3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Exercise teachers our brains that our behaviour matters.<br />
	4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Meditation allows our brains to focus on the task at hand and not fall into the culture of &ldquo;multi-tasking.&rdquo;<br />
	5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Random acts of kindness: send one email of praise or support every day for someone in our social support network. </p>
<p>	Achor tells us that by doing the above 5 practices, we can create ripples of positivity and a &ldquo;real revolution.&rdquo;</p>

	What is missing from this list, possibly because it is so all pervasive (the fish is the last to know about water) is this: competitiveness. Continually, we are bombarded with sports analogies. Witness the pervasiveness of sport in our culture. </p>
<p>	It programs us to believe in scarcity, in the zero sum game or the win-lose model. It is so much in our face that perhaps even Noam Chomsky has not noticed. This deeply embedded belief in the zero sum game is at the root of much of our problem. </p>
<p>	It supports our belief in scarcity and in the belief that there is something &quot;out there&quot; that is out to get us, be it terrorists, a collapsing environment, someone competing for our job and it goes on and on. Sport is often held up as a positive influence for good and it is exactly the opposite. </p>
<p>	It supports and nourishes aggression in us rather than cooperation.</p>

But as the Nazis swept across Europe her comfortable, bourgeois world began to crumble around her, as anti-Jewish feeling not only intensified but was legitimized. </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-US">In 1942, Alice&#39;s mother was deported. Desperately unhappy, she resolved to learn Chopin&#39;s 24 Etudes&#8211;the most technically demanding piano pieces she knew&#8211;and the complex but beautiful music saved her sanity. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-US">&nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-US">A year later, she, too&#8211;together with her husband and their six-year-old son&#8211;was deported to a concentration camp. But even in Theresienstadt, music was her salvation and in the course of more than 100 concerts she gave her fellow prisoners hope in a world of pain and death. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-US">&nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-US">This is her remarkable story, but it is also the story of a mother&#39;s struggle to create a happy childhood for her beloved only son in the midst of atrocity and barbarism. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-US">&nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-US">Of 15,000 children sent to the camp, Raphael was one of the 130 who survived. Today, Alice Herz-Sommer lives in London and she still plays the piano every day.</span></p>

<p>Dr. Horner, believes red meat from animals reared in confined animal feeding operations (CAFO&#39;s) is also a MAJOR contributor to cancer. These animals are given antibiotics, growth hormones and other veterinary drugs that get stored in their tissues. Additionally, cooking the meat over high heat creates heterocyclic amines, which further add to its carcinogenic effect.</p>
<p>While I do recommend eating meat, I agree that there is absolutely NO benefit to eating CAFO beef. The ONLY type of meat I recommend is organically-raised, grass-fed meats. It&#39;s hard for a lot of people to grasp the difference between CAFO and organic meat, but truly, they are like two different species in terms of their nutritional content. One is health harming while the other is beneficial.</p>
<p>So when we&#39;re talking about the detrimental impact of red meat on your health, especially in terms of feeding cancer, please understand that we&#39;re talking specifically about CAFO beef, aka &quot;factory farmed&quot; meat. Next on the list of cancer-promoters is sugar (this includes ALL forms of sugar, including fructose and grains).</p>
