 Laughter Yoga Released A Lot Of Stress For Me

It also caused me to study the relationship of laughter to happiness, joy and success.

Attending the Saturday morning classes, I always felt fantastic afterward. Laughing for the better part of an hour will do that. 🙂

 

Anger Triggered

Then, on Sunday, I was angry all day. This went on for weeks until it finally cleared.

In the summer of 2009, I attended my Certified Yoga Teacher training with the founder Dr. Madan Kataria. I asked him about this experience.

He explained that when there is a death in the family in India, the family grieves, they cry, they wail. They express their emotions and let them really flow.

 

We Hold Onto Traumas (Stresses)

We don’t tend to do that in our western societies. We tend to hold it in and where we hold it in is in the diaphragm!

Laughter can release those trapped emotions and that was what happened to me. The good news is that eventually whatever was stuck cleared out of my system.

Laughter Yoga triggered the release of the trapped anger and also helped to release it from my system.

What Causes Trapped Emotions?

You may have noticed how a baby can be bawling its eyes out one moment and giggling the next. They let it “all hang out.” Babies cry AND laugh and release emotions.

 

We Learn to Hold in Pain

As adults, we were trained to not show so much emotion. We learn how to hold in the pain, rather than releasing it.

 

Our Bodies Block the Pain Signals

As a survival mechanism, if we have a lot of pain, our bodies will find a way to block the pain signals so we don’t have to feel it every moment.

 

The Pain Has Not Gone Away

One of the ways we do this is to tighten muscles. The pain has not gone anywhere.

 

We Cut Off The Sensation of Pain

This unconscious muscle tightening cuts off the pain sensation from being transmitted to the brain.

It’s important to note that this is unconscious. If it were conscious, we could simply order the muscles to relax.

 

This Causes Reduced Blood Flow and Reduced Nerve Flow

Over a lifetime, we may have many little injuries. Each one individually may seem insignificant. Put together, we may find ourselves with so much tension in our bodies that blood flow and nerve flow are reduced.

This may well be why WedMD.com lists all those dis-eases as being caused by or at least made worse by stress.

How To Root Out Stress And Release It

 

Clues from Nature

David Berceli, the author of The Revolutionary Trauma Release Process tells us nature gives us clues on how we can do it (and in fact, we may have done it prior to modern “civilization” intervening with all its rules of how we should behave).

Berceli notes that a gazelle who has escaped a lion’s attack will tremble for about two minutes and then go back to life as before the attack, as if the attack had never happened!

When we are in flight or fight mode, in a real or virtual life or death situation, the body produces stress hormones to provide itself with all the resources needed to stay alive, either by fleeing or by fighting.

 

Stress Hormones Production Continues Until We Shake it off

We modern humans have lost this ability to shake off the stress hormones. For most, those hormones continue to circulate even when no real danger is present.

 

Stress Can Bring on Diseases This Way

That may well be the reason stress can cause or make worse all those conditions above.

One example, when we are running or fighting for our lives, the body shuts down the digestive process. Can you see why gastrointestinal problems, such as GERD, gastritis, ulcerative colitis, and irritable colon can result from chronic stress?

The digestive process is shut down in the presence of chronic stress, i.e. stress hormones circulating in the system.

Of course, we are going to have problems if there is little blood flow to the digestive organs.

 

Layers of Trauma

Over a lifetime, these traumas or mini shocks to the system pile up. They may be small and insignificant by themselves. But imagine these tensions in the musculature as layers of an onion.

 

How do we Peel the Trauma “Onion?”

Laughter Yoga did it for me. Over many weeks of sustained laughter sessions, the anger was released. I did not need to know where it came from. Feeling the joy from that release, I wanted to share it with others.
