Laughter: Main Ingredient in a Happy Life Mastery Newsletter January 27, 2025
Ever hear this: Some day we will look back at this and laugh?
Often said after some perceived disaster.
I spilled the milk again. Had a car accident. Or even something more disastrous.
The question is: If we can laugh about it in the future, what is stopping us from laughing right now?
After all, laughter relieves stress. Floods the body with the “feel good” hormones: endorphins, dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin.
What if we are programmed to only laugh when we are triggered by some, usually positive, event?
Imagine CHOOSING to laugh…without any trigger, any outside event.
You may say: That sounds like you are faking it.
What if “faking it” is a good thing?
I invite you to take a moment now and move your diaphragm up and down and sound HAH as you do so.
That process mimics laughter.
If you do it as an exercise for at least 10 to 15 minutes, guess what happens?
Your body generates those feel good hormones. The same ones as if you were laughing uproariously at a great comedy show.
And it’s free. No fee to enter the comedy club. Hah!
But…because we have this deep programming that we can only laugh if there is a reason. If we hear a joke, see some slapstick movie, etc.
Because of that programming, we can miss out on laughing for no reason.
I am a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher. As such, I have taught my body and system to laugh more often.
I USE laughter as a tool for health. To feel good more often. To love myself more.
And here is a great thought:
“Love yourself first and all else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”
-Lucille Ball.
That quote keeps recurring in my mind. It is SO profound.
Lucille Ball was one of the great comedians of the 20th Century. We have her to thank for the Star Trek TV series. No other studio would touch that project, but Lucy did.
And as a result, changed the entertainment industry. Star Trek morphed into many movies and spin off TV series.
Also, it can be argued that without Star Trek there would not have been a Star Wars movie. Which morphed into a billion dollar plus empire now run by the Disney corporation. Employing countless people.
All because Lucy loved herself first.
What might you and I get done if we did the same.
Focused on feeling good as a prime ingredient in not just happiness, but also success in life.
Alice Herz-Sommer was a young woman when the Nazis took her parents and her husband.
She survived two concentration camps with her son.
She eventually settled into a flat in London, England practicing piano two hours a day.
When motivational speaker and author Tony Robbins interviewed her, she gave us a secret to her 108-year-old life.
Tony asked her how she was able to stay positive after all those horrendous experiences. Her answer?
“Laughter and smiling helps too.”
