How to Make Stress Your Friend and Increase Your Chances of Living a Healthy Life into Your 90s.

 

We have been told (over and over again) that stress is harmful. We hear constantly about how stress is a killer.

 

We are advised to reduce stress through meditation, yoga, guided relaxations and so on.

 

But what if stress can be harnessed for good…for our benefit?

 

Is it as simple as changing our belief about stress?

 

What if we “reframe” stress?

 

What if, instead of believing that stress is our enemy, out to harm us, we embrace stress as a friend who is plugging us into more life energy?

 

Can that make a difference?

 

In a TED talk, psychologist Kelly McGonigal quotes a US study that tracked 39 adults over eight years. They asked them about their level of stress. They also asked them if they believed that stress was harmful to their hearts!

 

The study showed people who experienced a lot of stress had a 43% increased risk of dying.

 

But…that was only true if people also believed that stress is harmful to their health.

 

McGonigal estimates that 182,000 people died because they believed stress is harmful to them. If she is correct in her estimate that means that more people died as a result of believing stress is bad for them than died of skin cancer, HIV/AIDS and homicide!

 

A Harvard University study encouraged participants in a stress study to view stress as a friend, energizing their bodies to meet the challenge in front of them.

 

The result? The participants were less anxious and more confident!

 

But the real surprise was their bodies’ physiological response. Stress can constrict the arteries. This is one of the reasons stress is associated with cardiovascular disease.

 

In this study, when the participants viewed stress as positive, their blood vessels stayed relaxed and open and did not constrict!

 

McGonigal contends that this one biological change may make the difference between dying of a stress-induced heart attack at age 50 and living well into your 90s.

 

Whew! and Wow!

 

I have been leading Laughter Yoga sessions for years now and referring its benefits in reducing stress. And I will continue to extol the benefits of laughter. However, this information can be wonderfully life affirming.

 

So, how do we put this to use in real life?

 

McGonigal tells us it is this simple: When we are in a stressful situation, when we find our hearts pounding, our breathing increasing and so on, we simply remember this article and this TED talk.

 

We think to ourselves: “This is my body rising to the challenge.”

 

When you view stress that way, your body believes you and your stress response becomes healthier.

Overwhelm is an Emotion. Mastery Newsletter Update January 22, 2014

Overwhelm is an Emotion

It has nothing to do with what is going on outside of you. You may THINK you are feeling overwhelmed and/or stressed out because of the sheer number of tasks at work.

 

You may feel frazzled by the demands of your family be it sick kids, aging parents and demanding daily schedule.

 

It could be that you are facing financial challenges…not enough money at the end of the month syndrome.

 

Whatever is happening OUTSIDE of you is NOT the cause of the emotion. Even if everyone around you agrees with you that you are doing too much and how do you do it and so son.

 

No, the feeling of being overwhelmed is an emotion separate and apart from the “triggers” that we may identify as the cause of that feeling.

 

The stimulus hits our physical, mental and emotional system and causes a reaction. Let’s take an example. Say you were on your way to a job interview for a position you really wanted and felt would be perfect for you and someone bangs into your car from the rear. No injuries ensue but now you are not going to make the interview, you have take time to exchange information, maybe call and wait for the police. You will have to get the car fixed and deal with all the time consuming paperwork. You missed the appointment so you didn’t get the job. Now you don’t know where the rent or mortgage is coming from for next month. You may even get a tongue lashing from a close family member.

 

Would you now be justified in feeling overwhelmed? Well, sure. If you play “victim!”

 

Here’s the secret: There is a space in between stimulus (the car accident) and the response. We can actually choose how we respond. We can choose to rewire the brain and nervous system to respond in a way that allows us to feel joy, the inner and authentic joy that permeates every cell of our being.

 

Here’s what we don’t know. The universe IS a friendly place. It is always arranging things for our best and highest good. It could well be that the “fender-bender” caused a delay that prevents us from being in a far more serious accident further down the road.

 

It could be that the “ideal job” was not in our highest and best good and something far better is waiting for us.

 

It becomes a question of do you trust the universe of not. I, for one, do.

 

Regardless, whatever the stimulus, I can choose to remain in joy. By doing so, I have the greatest chance of making the best of the situation.

 

Why?

 

Because when we are in joy, there are more neural connections in the brain and that allows us to make wiser choices in any given situation. As simple as that.

Embrace Your Illness: It is a Message from Your Subconscious

Life, God, the Universe, Life Force Energy, call it what you will, only wants the best for you and I.

The pain, the suffering of having an illness, be it a cold, a flu, pneumonia or anything else, is not a punishment. It is a message.

“Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.”

When we are in the middle of a bout of flu, that hardly seems to be true. And yet, yet…

Let us suppose that perhaps the Universe IS a friendly place and only wants to steer us in the direction of our highest good.

In that case, if we get off track, perhaps the Universe sends us a message, a kick in the butt: “Hey kid. You’re off the path here. Get back on track.”

It could be a stubbed toe. If we ignore the message, then guess what? Our “guardian angel” (another way to think of the Universe) sends a stronger message. Perhaps the next one is a fender bender car “accident.” Perhaps it is a cold or flu.

Consider any event in our lives that we think of as negative is actually a message and happens for our highest good.

Consider that perhaps everything happens for our highest good. If we continue to ignore the messages, the Universe, our Guardian Angel sends increasingly stronger messages until we “get it.”

So, rather than falling into the victim mentality: “Oh woe is me. Why does everything bad happen to me,” why not take the “time out” we are given with an illness and reflect on the message the friendly universe is sending to us?

A number of folks I know personally who rarely get ill have had an extended bout this year, myself included!

If  it is true, as I contend, that living in joy is our best “recipe” for success, then one answer to pain, illness and/or suffering may well be….wait for it…laughter and smiling.

When we allow joy into every moment, we have better cellular communication, i.e. the neurons are “firing on all cylinders” and we can more readily find solutions to whatever “ails” us.

Yes, I know it can be a challenge to find a way to laugh or smile when in pain and wondering if it something more serious. It can easy to give in to worry.

How to Feel Good Even When Ill

 

It’s Christmas eve and I am with family in the Finnish countryside. Now, in Finland, Christmas Eve is when everything happens.

 

At noon, there is the Christmas Peace proclamation over the TV. Traditionally, everyone watches. Then, the Christmas sauna in the afternoon.

 

Early evening, the huge and delicious Christmas dinner. The Tension mounts as the children wait for “Joulupukki” or Santa to show up. In some homes, he actually comes inside and distributes the gifts. In others, we see him briefly outside the window and the gifts are dropped at the door.

 

The only problem is just as we are starting to eat, I come up with a fever and the chills. Uncontrollable shivering AND I can’t eat a bite!

 

Now, you may think this a disaster. I would have thought so too in previous times.

 

But with my experience with Laughter Yoga, I now have a secret weapon: a smile.

 

That’s right. Even though I am shivering with a fever and my body is rebelling against eating, I still feel good.

 

And it is the smile. As long as I maintain it, I continue to feel good. This is truly amazing.

 

We know that laughter causes the body to produce endorphins. It is the same with a smile.

 

I can feel the joy despite my body being racked with fever. What an amazing discovery.

 

I suspect the smile produced endorphins are also a major healing agent.
