Connection: The Need for Self Expression. Mastery Newsletter April 26, 2017

We need to connect with others.

 

It is essential to our health and well-being.

 

This need shows up as a desire to express ourselves.

 

We need to be heard.

 

Yet, we are stymied.

 

As children, well meaning parents and others may have taught us to not be so noisy.

 

“Children should be seen, not heard.”

 

The creative, rambunctious and wild 6-year-old eventually gets put on hold.

 

We learn to censor what we say and how we say it to conform to arbitrary standards.

 

Thus, we limit ourselves. We are the ones who become our own worst enemies.

 

Not expressing ourselves fully.

 

This is why Toastmasters exists.

 

Often thought of as a place to learn public speaking, Toastmasters is much more.

 

It is a place to learn self expression, yes.

 

But also a safe space to face our deepest fears.

 

For many, that is the fear of public speaking.

 

Facing our deepest fears empowers us.

 

Facing our fears, we allow ourselves to bring forth and show to the world who we truly are.

 

Showing our vulnerabilities, we connect deeply with others.

 

This connection is therapeutic. It is healing.

 

It is why the sense of community with others is critical to our health.

 

It is what is a critical missing element in modern society.

 

It is what helps to provide a sense of safety in this often turbulent world.

 

What groups or clubs do you belong to that allows for that sense of safety?

 

What can you do to connect more deeply with others in your groups?

A journalist sets out to debunk “The Iceman.”

 

Wim Hof has numerous records for cold exposure and other things.

 

The journalist, Scott Carney, finds out Hof is for real.

 

Soon Carney is climbing a mountain in Poland…in winter…in his shorts…and sweating!

 

Here is his story. (Bolding is mine.)

 

 

Humans have an innate ability to adapt to the environment around us.

 

By Avoiding Temperature Extremes, You Forgo Health Benefits

 

 

“What this means is that we have all of these muscles in our circulatory system that just aren’t getting exercise … [T]hat guy with the gym body … may look physically healthy, but actually [may] have a fairly degraded arterial system, just because he hasn’t stimulated it. We need this external stimulation to live a full human life and really use all of our biology.

 

There are serious autoimmune impacts with this — treatments for diabetes, obesity and all of these things that are important because we used to think that human health relied on diet and exercise … But what this book uncovers … [is] that there’s actually a third pillar. The third pillar is the environment … If you ignore it, you’re not doing your biology any favors.”

 

By regularly exposing yourself to cold, you build up a mitochondria-rich tissue very similar to brown fat called beige fat. Beige fat is recruited through your white fat, which can then be used to heat your body and maintain a more active-passive metabolism. Indeed, the conclusion I reached after many decades of studying health is that burning fat as your primary fuel is the goal.

“Western civilization has given us this enticing option of being comfortable all the time. We just think, because we’re so technologically advanced, that comfort should be available at the flip of a switch. But that’s actually undermining who we are as people and leading to things like obesity, weak circulatory systems and … autoimmune diseases,” Carney says.

 

The good news is, we all have this latent capacity that we can tap into and relearn. It went underground, so to speak, but it didn’t disappear. Carney developed remarkable endurance to cold in a single week. He also lost seven pounds of fat in that same time.

With those warnings in place, the breathing method Carney recommends can be briefly described as follows: First, you take 30 to 40 deep controlled breaths. This will decrease the carbon dioxide (CO2) in your system and increase your oxygen (O2) saturation up to 100 percent. Next, after a complete out-breath where you’ve emptied your lungs as completely as possible, you then hold your breath until you get to that point where you need to gasp for air.

 

“By doing that, you’re interacting with an autonomic system in your body, which is where the gasp reflex is. You’re telling your body that you should have some control over this system,” Carney explains. “It’s the same thing that you do in a cold shower when you’re telling yourself not to shiver. It’s the same skill of becoming mentally strong over an autonomic reflex.

 

These two methods work on different systems, parasympathetic and sympathetic systems, in the body. What that does is give you more resistance in the cold and has this autonomic trick, this autonomic ability to influence your immune system down the road, which is incredibly useful.”

 

….Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie also uses yogic breathing for cold resistance and mental strength. Ice bathing, sauna and the combination of the two also have a long history and tradition in Russia and Scandinavian countries. So, what Hof is teaching is nothing new. Many of these techniques have been around for a long time. What makes Hof particularly interesting is his openness to investigation and testing, giving us a deeper insight into our human potential.

The darkness descends.

 

No one knows how dark it can become.

 

Will the world we know survive?

 

Will we survive?

 

It is easy to feel helpless, overwhelmed, sad.

 

Who can be blamed for worrying?

 

It is now, more than ever, an uncertain world.

 

An uncertain future.

 

Dear reader: it was ever thus.

 

In the 1950s (I date myself now),

this same fear was stalking the land.

 

The “Free World” as we called it then,

was deathly afraid of the Russkies raining nuclear bombs on us.

 

The US and Canada set up the Distant Early Warning (DEW) sites all across the arctic.

 

This was to give us a few minutes, maybe hours, of warning.

 

If the Russkies (the Soviets) send those warplanes,

we might have time to evacuate.

 

To where, was not certain.

 

My grade 5 teacher gave us a map of Vancouver with escape routes out of the city.

 

Where were we supposed to go then?

 

Across North America, bomb shelters were being built.

 

They were stocked with supplies for a few weeks.

 

There was a palpable fear.

 

You could cut if with a knife.

 

That same fear is in the air today.

 

Today, though, we know more.

 

We know that peace begins inside each person.

 

When we are in our “reptilian” brain, in fear,

we make decisions based on emotion. (Bomb them!)

 

When we release the fear,

we allow our higher selves to dominate and make decisions based on love.

 

Yes, at times, the decision needs to be to use physical action to defend ourselves or our family.

 

As the Japanese martial art of Aikido teaches,

that can be done while centred.

 

While there is a tempest outside of us

anger, fear, attack, etc.) we can react calmly.

 

This is where happiness comes in.

 

“If you can keep your head while others are losing theirs, you’ll be a man, my son.”

-Rudyard Kipling paraphrased. (forgive the obvious sexism…he was a man of his times)

 

This is the challenge today.

 

Staying calm, staying happy, loving action

in the maelstrom we find ourselves in today.

 

I do Laughter Yoga.

 

I do the Iceman protocols, including meditation,

yoga, breathing and cold exposure.

 

As well, I work to extend love through service.

 

I ensure I have community.

 

Differing tribes: my family, friends, my Laughter Yoga friends, Toastmasters.

 

What can you do to stay happy, calm, centred,

in love with life while witnessing today’s storms?

Just Note Gone. Mastery Newsletter April 6, 2017

This is an important meditation practice.

It is simple. Helps to relieve pain.

With this, we train the mind to notice that something we have experienced is no more.

At the end of a breath, notice that the breath is over.

 

At the end of a thought, notice that the thought is gone.

At the end of an emotion, any emotion, joy, anger, whatever, notice it is gone.

“If you have a lot of mental sentences, you’ll have a lot of mental periods—full stops, Gones.” –Joy on Demand, Chade-Meng Tan

When we do this, Meng says, the mind realizes that “Whatever is subject to origination is all subject to cessation.”

This practice supports the ability to see that “…self is a process, not an object…Recognizing this, our sense of self becomes delightfully fluid and we gain a joyful sense of lightness in life.”

Can you see yourself trying this out?

Sent in 1944, three years before his writing of “1984”, to Noel Willmett, who had asked “whether totalitarianism, leader-worship etc. are really on the up-grade” given “that they are not apparently growing in [England] and the USA”:

“I must say I believe, or fear, that taking the world as a whole these things are on the increase. Hitler, no doubt, will soon disappear, but only at the expense of strengthening (a) Stalin, (b) the Anglo-American millionaires and (c) all sorts of petty fuhrers of the type of de Gaulle. All the national movements everywhere, even those that originate in resistance to German domination, seem to take non-democratic forms, to group themselves round some superhuman fuhrer (Hitler, Stalin, Salazar, Franco, Gandhi, De Valera are all varying examples) and to adopt the theory that the end justifies the means. Everywhere the world movement seems to be in the direction of centralised economies which can be made to ‘work’ in an economic sense but which are not democratically organised and which tend to establish a caste system. With this go the horrors of emotional nationalism and a tendency to disbelieve in the existence of objective truth because all the facts have to fit in with the words and prophecies of some infallible fuhrer. Already history has in a sense ceased to exist, ie. there is no such thing as a history of our own times which could be universally accepted, and the exact sciences are endangered as soon as military necessity ceases to keep people up to the mark. Hitler can say that the Jews started the war, and if he survives that will become official history. He can’t say that two and two are five, because for the purposes of, say, ballistics they have to make four. But if the sort of world that I am afraid of arrives, a world of two or three great superstates which are unable to conquer one another, two and two could become five if the fuhrer wished it. That, so far as I can see, is the direction in which we are actually moving, though, of course, the process is reversible.

As to the comparative immunity of Britain and the USA. Whatever the pacifists etc. may say, we have not gone totalitarian yet and this is a very hopeful symptom. I believe very deeply, as I explained in my book The Lion and the Unicorn, in the English people and in their capacity to centralise their economy without destroying freedom in doing so. But one must remember that Britain and the USA haven’t been really tried, they haven’t known defeat or severe suffering, and there are some bad symptoms to balance the good ones. To begin with there is the general indifference to the decay of democracy. Do you realise, for instance, that no one in England under 26 now has a vote and that so far as one can see the great mass of people of that age don’t give a damn for this? Secondly there is the fact that the intellectuals are more totalitarian in outlook than the common people. On the whole the English intelligentsia have opposed Hitler, but only at the price of accepting Stalin. Most of them are perfectly ready for dictatorial methods, secret police, systematic falsification of history etc. so long as they feel that it is on ‘our’ side. Indeed the statement that we haven’t a Fascist movement in England largely means that the young, at this moment, look for their fuhrer elsewhere. One can’t be sure that that won’t change, nor can one be sure that the common people won’t think ten years hence as the intellectuals do now. I hope they won’t, I even trust they won’t, but if so it will be at the cost of a struggle. If one simply proclaims that all is for the best and doesn’t point to the sinister symptoms, one is merely helping to bring totalitarianism nearer.

You also ask, if I think the world tendency is towards Fascism, why do I support the war. It is a choice of evils—I fancy nearly every war is that. I know enough of British imperialism not to like it, but I would support it against Nazism or Japanese imperialism, as the lesser evil. Similarly I would support the USSR against Germany because I think the USSR cannot altogether escape its past and retains enough of the original ideas of the Revolution to make it a more hopeful phenomenon than Nazi Germany. I think, and have thought ever since the war began, in 1936 or thereabouts, that our cause is the better, but we have to keep on making it the better, which involves constant criticism.
