Your Most Important Job is to Feel Good…No Matter What

Here is Why and How

 

From birth to about 6 years of age, our brain waves are predominantly slow waves. These are called Delta and Theta waves (Lipton 2008).

 

These slow waves are associated with hypnosis, a trance like state, with profound creativity and with sleep and dreaming (Fehmi & Robbins 2010, Wise 2002). *

 

Children Are Highly Impressionable

 

This is why, for young children, the line between reality and fantasy is blurred. Who has heard the thought that young children are highly impressionable? This is the reason.

 

What we learn in this phase of life continues to affect us as adults.

 

Traumatic life experiences at that age can be experienced as threats to survival. One example would be if mommy is angry and daddy is a raging alcoholic.

 

At this stage, the child is not able to tell that mommy and daddy are not going to kill him or her!

 

The body’s elegant survival system is kicked into high gear and the child hides from what it perceives as a life threatening situation. The fight or flight stress hormones run rampant.

 

Threats in Childhood are Remembered as Adults

 

That memory gets encoded in what is called the limbic system, otherwise known as the reptilian brain.

 

Now that person is an adult. When a boss or a spouse is yelling, the same fight or flight survival mechanism kicks in. “Ah hah, this sounds like mommy yelling, I better hide.”

 

This is all Unconscious

 

It is important to note and underline, this is all happening BELOW THE CONSCIOUS LEVEL. It makes no difference if we know all about it logically and in the rational mind. Our system’s first job is survival, to keep us safe. This is instinctual and operating below the conscious level.

 

In a real life threatening event, there is often no time to think things through. We have to survive and instincts kick in.

 

Causes us Misery in Adult Life

 

These survival mechanisms, which were critical to survival on the savannah 100,000 years ago, can cause great misery and grief to us today.

 

Solution: Find ways to feel good…no matter what.

 

Because when we feel good, the endorphins run the show.

 

Endorphins Crowd out Stress Hormones

 

The stress hormones CANNOT COEXIST IN THE BODY WITH THE FEEL GOOD HORMONES!

 

Feeling Good May be the Solution to Many of Our Life Challenges

 

Easier said than done, of course. But here are some ways.

 

Laughter, Smiling, Breathing and Posture (LSBP).

 

Laughter: When we laugh for at least 10-15 minutes, that process releases the endorphins. It does take that long. Laughing at a joke for 3-5 seconds doesn’t do it. That is why Laughter Yoga is so popular.

 

Smiling: When we smile, we feel good and, in that moment, endorphins run the show and we are relieved from the stress hormones.

 

Breathing: Deep and slow breathing does the same. Three deep breaths slow things down and we feel better.

 

Posture: Posture is an often overlooked technique and can fill a textbook. In fact, it does. Esther Gokhale spent a decade and a half studying societies where a natural posture was the norm and wrote a book on how we can regain our natural energy flow by emulating them. 8 STEPS TO A PAIN FREE BACK.

Don’t Play Russian Roulette With Your Health and Your Life

Try making money when your health is devastated by dis-ease.

Try enjoying life when you are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.

All the money in the world means nothing…without health.

Having energy and vitality is a base-line requirement to being able to fully participate in life and truly to “suck the marrow out of the bone” as it were.

So, it is a puzzle why everyone is not making it their number one job to study health and vitality.

The “default setting” for many seems to be: “I will let my doctor worry about it.”

Why does that not work?

  • Doctors, bless their souls, are faced with an impossible task. Here is my jurisdiction, they are only given 15 minutes to see a patient. Anything over that and they are working for free.
  • Their “Modus Operandus” seems to be: Wait until symptoms show up, then address those symptoms, usually with drugs, surgery or some other dramatic response.
  • Often times, the prescription carries “side effects.” All you have to do is tune into American TV and see the ads for prescription drugs to hear of the many side effects, some quite serious, even possible death is sometimes listed. (Those ads are banned in Canada.)
  • There is little time for doctors to give proactive prevention suggestions, even when they are trained for it. Only a small fraction of their education hours is given to nutrition, as an example.
  • The medical system’s track record for solving modern maladies leaves something to be desired. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes are all on the rise. One in three is expected to get some form of cancer in their lives. Imagine playing Russian Roulette with your life and cancer. Here, have this pistol. It has three chambers. I have put a bullet in one of those chambers. Now, roll the chamber, cock the trigger, place the gun against your head and pull the trigger. In effect, this is what you are doing by relying on the medical system as it stands.

The system’s track record for heart health and diabetes is not much better.

No one cares as much about your health as you do.

It us up to each of us to take care of our bodies as well as our minds, emotions and yes, our spiritual selves.

Childlike Playfulness as Healer and “Deprogrammer”

“Creativity is not the possession of some special talent. It’s about the willingness to play.” — John Cleese

This willingness to play may be our saviour.

In Laughter Yoga, we make pretend we are children and chant “Very good, very good, yay!”

It seems and is silly, but it connects us with our creativity.

It is this willingness to play that opens up not only our creativity, but also our freedom.

Here’s how.

We get messages daily from the media that the world is a dangerous place. The “powers that be” have a vested interest in keeping us connected to fear.

If we fear terrorism, they can create laws that supposedly protect us, but in fact, take away human rights.

If we fear dis-ease, they can sell us drugs.

Fear is a useful emotion. In case of life and death situations, it can guide us away from danger.

If we have constant fear, however, we restrict our creativity and our healing powers.

When we hold on to emotions rather than allowing them to flow through us, we get stuck physically as well. Muscles tighten. Blood flow and nerve flow and energy flow are restricted.

Childlike playfulness can help to release fears (and traumas).

Children wear their emotions on their sleeves. Adults, not so much. We are taught (manipulated?) to “suck it up” and not be childish.

By allowing emotions to flow, being silly, seeing the humour in situations, we activate joy.

In this joyful state, we are more likely to have the “feel good” hormones flowing and not have the stress hormones in play.

The feel good hormones allows our immune systems and endocrine and digestive systems operating more optimally.

The stress hormones basically shut down all other systems besides the survival “fight or flight” system.

By playing more, we gain joy and help to release not only trauma, but fear also.
