Do You Have Deadly Stress? “Voo” to the Rescue

                                            

Healing Sexual Trauma at the Same Time

 

 

Chronically tight muscles may, over time, actually cause dis-ease.

 

We are designed to sense danger or threat two ways.

 

First, our external sense organs evaluate potential threats in our environment. If we see a bear close by, we know we are in danger.

 

Trauma expert Peter A. Levine tells us the other way we assess threat:

 

We also assess threat directly from the state of our viscera and our muscles — our internal sense organs. If our muscles are tense, we unconsciously interpret these tensions are foretelling the existence of danger, even when none actually exists. Tight muscles in the neck and shoulders may, for example, signal to the brain that you are likely to be hit…We suffer even greater distress when our guts are persistently overstimulated by the vagus nerve. If we are nauseated, twisted in our guts, feel our muscles collapsing, and lack in energy, we feel helpless and hopeless — even though there is no actual decimating threat. In other words, the churning itself signals grave threat and dread to the brain, even when nothing is currently wrong — at least not externally.”

 

 

These intense and heightened muscle tensions are meant to be temporary. If they become permanent, Levine says, “…one is left in acute and, eventually, chronic distress.”

 

 

Levine gives one solution. Sounding “Voo” like a foghorn. Imagine being a foghorn leading your spirit out of the fog back home.

Can Laughter Yoga Help to Lift Stress, Anxiety, Worry, Fears, Depression & PTSD?

It has happened.

 

One success story is Jane (not her real name) who healed a long standing case of PTSD from childhood sexual abuse.

“…Michael Cortina, director of outpatient services at the Regional Mental Health Center in Merrillville, Indiana, shows that PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) can be healed with laughter. He used it successfully to help Jane who is in her 30s…”It is absolutely revolutionary, and eliminates the negative effect and emotional distress of that trauma in one session”, said Cortina. – from Laughter Yoga International website article

“…Jane…constantly suffered from nightmares. Every night before she went to sleep, she checked all the closets, locked every door and made sure a hammer and can of mace were near her bed, giving her the peace of mind to doze off. But sleep only led to more nightmares. ‘I was basically living in my own personal hell,’ she said. As a child no therapy helped her till later in life when she went to Cortina and tried his therapy.”

Positive Results Locally from a Single Session of Laughter Yoga

A small group of military personnel participating in a 6 week Therapeutic Yoga program found a sense of happiness from one Laughter Yoga session.

 

After only one Laughter Yoga session, a male participant shared how he felt happy for the first time. He told us he keeps his unhappiness hidden from even his family and this was the first time he felt really happy. And he was confused.

 

A female participant chimed in and said she understood exactly what he meant and that she too felt happy for the first time and she also was confused.

 

Can this be sustained?

 

We are going to find out.

Is This the Root of All Your Challenges?

 

Could our worries, anxieties, fears and even depressions have this at its root?

 

Could our physical symptoms/conditions/dis-eases have this as a contributing factor at the least?

 

What is “this?”

 

Trauma.

 

Traumas, big and/or small may layer on top of each other until they create one or more of the conditions above.

 

This is from those therapists and authors who have worked with traumas for year. People like David Berceli who created the Revolutionary Trauma Release Process™

 

Waking the Tiger, Healing Trauma author Peter Levine concurs.

 

We All Have Trauma

 

From that book’s introduction:

 

“The fact is that, over time, a series of seemingly minor mishaps can have a damaging effect on a person. Trauma does not have to stem from a major catastrophe. Some common triggering events include:

 

* Automobile accident (even fender benders)

* Routine invasive medical procedures

* Loss of loved ones

* Natural disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes

 

Even falling off a bicycle can be overwhelming to a child under certain circumstances…almost all of us have experienced some form of trauma, either directly or indirectly.”

 

Anger After Laughter

 

An example of how this might work: during my first spring attending Laughter Yoga sessions weekly on a Saturday morning, I always felt joy and fantastic, energetic hopefulness. (this is typical of a Laughter Yoga session, by the way).

 

Then, all day Sunday, I was angry all day.

 

This went on for a number of weeks until it resolved itself.

 

When I went for my Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher training in the summer of 2009, I asked the founder Dr. Madan Kataria about this (He is the medical doctor who started the wildly successful Laughter Yoga clubs in 1995).

 

Fully Expressing Grief Releases Trauma

 

He told me that in India, when there is a death in the family, the family expresses their grief, they cry, they wail. They let it all out instead of trapping it in the body as we westerners do.

 

Westerners tend to hold it in and where we hold it in is in the diaphragm!

 

During Laughter Yoga, we move the diaphragm rather energetically. This can cause those trapped emotions to surface.

 

Laughter Yoga Can Clear Trauma…Over Time

 

The good news is that Laughter Yoga not only brings those emotions to the surface, it also helps to clear them. As I started to attend sessions a few times a week, the anger no longer came up. It had cleared.

 

Trauma Layers

 

My understanding is that we all have many traumas large and small, physical and emotional. They can be layered on top of each other. When the anger cleared, the next layer of trauma shows up. Fun times. 🙂

 

Peeling the Trauma Onion

 

It is as if these traumas layered on top of each other are like an onion.

 

Now, the question becomes, how to cut through many layers at once?

 

Daily Laughter

 

I now practice laughing at least once a day for a minimum of 10-15 minutes. (Dr. Kataria’s research indicates we need at least that long a period of laughter to get the health and medical benefits of laughter.) That daily practice has helped to continue the peeling of the “trauma onion.”

 

Trembling Solution to Trauma

 

Another practice I have started is David Berceli’s Revolutionary Trauma Release Process™

 

This is artificially create the trembling that children and animals in nature automatically do to release the stress hormones after a traumatic event.

 

In nature, an example would be a gazelle who just ran and got away from a lion. Berceli’s discovery: about two minutes is enough and then the gazelle carries on with life as it nothing had happened. Animals truly live in the “now.”

 

Cause or Contributing Factor?

 

Does it matter? If trauma is present in all of these conditions: PTSD, depression, anxiety, worry, fear, why not clear the trauma and see what happens?

 

Dis-eases: Can They Clear with Cleared Trauma?

 

No claims. Let us be clear on that. But, let’s look at how trauma may contribute.

 

If trauma causes muscles in our body to contract and stay contracted permanently, might this cause less blood flow to those muscles and to some organs, and maybe less nerve connection and less energy or “chi” flow as well?

 

Nutrition and Energy Missing

 

Can nerve disconnection, less blood flow and energy flow combine to help create conditions where some parts are just not getting the nutrition and energy required for health?

 

I don’t think we have to have extended medical training to use our common sense and say: “Hey, maybe that is possible.”

 

Is Your “River” Dammed Up?

 

An analogy may be a river that is dammed up. That may create stagnant pools of water where toxins can build up.

 

Might our bodies have stagnant pools where toxins build up because of trauma?

 

Proof of the Pudding.

 

It’s always in the eating, is it not?

 

Some Experiments to Consider

 

Laughter Yoga sessions. While contra-indicated for some, many folks just feel joy, happiness, more energy and relaxation at the same time. Maybe it also will start the trauma clearing process.

David Berceli’s book is in the library. See if that makes sense for you.

 

There are other methods as well. I am researching and will report back as I learn more.

A Doctor in Indiana had success. A woman who had been sexually abused, who locked all the doors, had a hammer and mace under her bed and had nightmares every night…

 

All that…gone…after just one Laughter Yoga session.

 

Now, I am convinced the doctor did other things as well, nevertheless…

 

As a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher, I was asked to lead a Laughter Yoga session with some folks from the Esquimalt Naval Base.

 

One guy said afterwards that it was the first time he had felt happy in a long time. Another participants said the same.

Service: The Key to Fulfillment, Contentment and Peace.

Was it Einstein who said those who are truly happy are those who have found a way to serve.

 

As a Laughter Yoga Teacher, I have been leading Laughter Yoga sessions for over six years now. Every time, I get a wonderful sense of peace, delight and contentment.

 

I believe it is not just my laughing, but helping others to access their inner childlike playfulness and delight. To see the joy in their faces.

 

Now, I am learning the art of doing less and letting myself be led.

 

What I am being led to is to use Laughter Yoga to help relieve Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.
