Dedicated to Health, Wealth and Fr~eedom

Merry HO HO to one and all.

The Best Reason to Write a Book? You learn SO much. The Zen of Joy is out at my publisher Fast Pencil. http://www.fastpencil.com/publications/4844-The-Zen-of-Joy

This has been a major focus since September of 2011 and now it is done. Whew. Love it. Now on to using the “protocols” from the book to conduct talks, seminars and workshops and whatever else pops up.

I saw a hole in the self development books marketplace. Because everyone is SO busy these days, few believe they have the time to work on developing skills like happiness. You know: “I believe in ________________, I just don’t have the time.” Fill in the blank with meditation, tai chi, qigong, yoga, EFT, exercise, running, etc.

This perceived lack of time means many folks just are not taking advantage of some wonderful tools that are available.

So….I put together 24 practices, or “protocols” as I call them, that anyone can do, that work together synergistically, provide tremendous benefits (the subtitle is How to Rewire Your Brain for Happiness and Success. Minutes a Day to Boost Your Performance, Productivity and Profits.).

It’s that “Minutes a Day” bit that I think may well appeal to a specific group of folks, i.e. Boomers who are working hard to get their retirement in order in a challenging economic environment…and getting stressed out.

Here is the more detailed story on my webpage: http://zenofjoy.com/

By studying for the book, I learned the simple things it takes to be in joy and bliss most of the time. The more I studied, the more I wanted to share this joy. The book is the result.

In the meantime, I have been racing to the finish line with my 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health. 100 tips are now written and remaining eight should be complete by year end. This is a free email course that is combined with a laughter video, so you can laugh along with me…every day if you choose. I have added a bonus to the front of the course: How to Add Ten Good Years to Your Life. In Four Easy Steps and in Just Minutes a Day, You Too Can Add Ten Good Years to Your Life.

Here is where it lives: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/add-ten-healthy-years-life/

Personal notes this year. I was able to get to Finland and the UK in May/June to visit family and a great time was had by all. Finnish country food, saunas, decent weather most of the time. The highlight in Finland was walks in the country and rowing on a lake with my cousin. In London, went to a few out of the way places, but I loved the free Maritime Museum and its ship simulator. Did OK with the small boats, but I crashed the big ferry onto the dock at Dover in a storm. 🙂

A very Merry Christmas and just an awesome New Year 2013 to you and yours.

Much Love and Lots of Laughter, Matti

Enjoy the read,

Matti

Supplement Recommendations on a Budget

By Dr. Mercola

First of all, it is vital to understand that the most important strategy you can implement for your physical health is to eat the right foods and commit to an exercise program. Supplements are only complementary to a phenomenal diet, and should never be used in place of nutritious foods.

69 percent of American adults take supplements. There's a plethora to choose from out there, from vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to herbs and various combinations thereof. But which ones might you really need?

Unless you're addressing a specific condition, and if you're on a tight budget the most important and valuable supplements to consider are:

    Vitamin D

    Probiotics / Fermented Veggies / Vitamin K2

    Omega-3

    Ubiquinol

    Astaxanthin

    Magnesium

    Sulfur

The Myth of Retirement. Part Five. Possible Solutions

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

Believing in the myth of retirement brings on a whole cascade of negative consequences. One of the false assumptions that hold up the myth is that age 65 (or any arbitrary age) is old.

Whether we think 65 is old or 70 or 75, we give instructions to our subconscious mind to deliver on that belief and make us old.

The subconscious mind more or less runs our lives. Whatever beliefs and/or feelings are stored there reflects into our world.

Do you doubt that statement? Then think of driving a car for the first time. There are so many things to think about consciously…taking the parking brake off, putting the car into gear, checking all three rearview mirrors, looking to see there is no other car coming before we pull out, checking for pedestrians and especially young children.

Now, take your right foot off the brake, put it on the accelerator pedal, signal, turn the steering wheel, gently press on the accelerator, check again for traffic. Add more pressure until you are up to speed, watch for stop signs, red lights, think about what your destination is and what is the best route to take. Watch for other cars and try to anticipate them in case someone cuts you off. Look in the rear view mirrors again, brake…whoops, not too hard. Signal a turn, look over your shoulder to make sure no one is coming.

Whew. There is so much to do, you may have found yourself quite tired after the first time at the wheel. You park the car, put it in neutral, apply the parking brake and breathe a sigh of relief. You made it without hitting anybody and only got honked at once. 🙂

Now think about driving once you have been doing it for years. You may have had the experience of driving somewhere, reaching your destination and realizing you had missed the whole drive as your mind was daydreaming somewhere else entirely.

The subconscious mind has learned the skill and it took over all those conscious functions.

That is an example. Once we program it, the subconscious basically runs the show. So it is with retirement. We learned a set of beliefs about retirement and the subconscious makes those beliefs come true.

Remember the four false assumptions about retirement? Once again, they are:
1)    Age 65 is old.
2)    Leisure is more fulfilling than work.
3)    Older people should make room for the next generation
4)    People over 65 make worse workers.

1 and 4 may be the worst. Regardless, if these ideas that are now fully subscribed by the subconscious mind, the subconscious moves heaven and earth to make them come true. We become old before our time and we can actually become worse workers…until and unless we unravel those belief structures and replace them with something more positive.

Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with stepping aside from work if you the finances to do so. Here though is a unique and relatively easy way to undo the negative influences of the retirement myth, even if you are already retired.

Marci Shimoff, the author of Happy for no Reason, tells the story of her father who retired at age 72 from a job he absolutely loved, dentistry. When he retired, he asked himself, what is it about the job that I love so much? He came up with the answer that it was the intricate work involved. So…he started to do needlepoint!

He kept it up, stayed active and loved his life in “retirement.” At age 85, Marci was visiting with him when he was just starting on a large needlepoint project. Amazed, Marci asked how long he expected it to take? Her father’s answer was, that at the speed he had been going, he expected it to take four years. Here was a man at age 85, starting on a four year project!

Did he finish it? Yes, and it now hangs on Marci’s wall. The video of Marci explaining this may still be up…check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=941eHxlqNXU&feature=plcp

So, what is the formula for unraveling the negative and damaging beliefs about retirement? If we take the example of Marci’s father, it is this: figure out what gives or gave you the “job satisfaction” in your work and find a away to get that same satisfaction in another way.

Some may say they have little or no “job satisfaction,” that their work is just a paycheck. It may be challenging to find what fuels our passion if it has been allowed to idle for a long time. It may however be one of the most important challenges you take on as it has the potential to get in touch with your inner joy on a deep level.

Many of these 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health are designed to help you with this. If you have been laughing daily with me on the video at the beginning of the series, you are no doubt more in touch with your inner Authentic Joy. Tip #3 is a great help in making decisions.

My book The Zen of Joy, How to Rewire Your Brain for Happiness and Success. Minutes a Day to Boost Your Performance, Productivity and Profits can be a help too.

It is a series of 24 “protocols” that work synergistically to unlock the inner joy. In doing the program, you may find yourself being led to your passion without any real effort. Here is more info: http://zenofjoy.com/

The bad news: each of us has to find our own way.

The good news: each of us has a unique path that can manifest joy, energy and health for us.

Use the tools. Pay attention to intuition. Meditation is most helpful. There is a zen saying: “We need to meditate 15 minutes a day unless we are very busy, in which case, we need to meditate one hour a day.”

Many of my best ideas have come to me during meditation.

The Myth of Retirement Part Four The Most Successful Marketing Campaign in History is Built on Four Lies

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

The whole concept of retirement is based on four assumptions. All of them are false. Here they are:

1)    Age 65 is old.
2)    Leisure is more fulfilling than work.
3)    Older people should make room for the next generation
4)    People over 65 make worse workers.

All of these may have been true at some point. In the 21st Century, we can now easily see they are all bilge and balderdash.

When enough people get it, retirement may quickly wither on the vine. Boomers can stop racing for an imaginary and illusory finishing line and fully enjoy their lives.

Destroying the Four Assumptions

Assumption 1. “Age 65 is old.”

When President Roosevelt set the US retirement age at 65, the average American lived to 63. Today, Wikipedia tells us:

The life expectancy at birth of the world is 67.2 years … for 2005–2010, according to United Nations World Population Prospects 2006 Revision and 66.57 years … for 2009 according to CIA World Factbook 2009.

Today, the US life expectancy is 78.2, while Canada is 80.7, Japan 82.7.

“Your adult life will be twice as long as you thought it would be. And if you’re in reasonably good health and have good habits, most of this time will be just as productive as earlier years.” –Lydia Bronte, former director of the Carnegie Foundation’s Aging Society.

Assumption 2. “Leisure is more fulfilling than work.”

Can’t you just go golfing? Can’t you just “take it easy?” Ask those who have tried it. When I had my 15 year career as a financial planner, I asked some of my retired clients this question. I vividly remember one retired man who had taken a part time job as a security guard at the Provincial Legislature in Victoria, B.C. When I mentioned that research showed retirement as being more traumatic than divorce or death of a loved one, it was like the dam burst on something he had not been able to share with anyone: “Matti, you have no idea how hard it is.”

“Lots of people find purpose and meaning in work. For many, it’s the reason for getting up in the morning.” –Catherine D. Fryock, co-author of Unretirement.

You probably know people who have become ill right after retirement and some who died. One study shows that almost a third of retirees return to work. Over two thirds of those take a full time job.

Assumption 3: “Older people should make room for the next generation.”

The Baby Bust generation that follows the Baby Boomers are fewer in number. Boomers retiring means fewer productive workers who are withdrawing from the workforce. Production output is produced by people who are working. If we have fewer and fewer workers, what do you think can happen to living standards?

Assumption 4: “People over 65 make worse workers.”

This can be true for physically demanding jobs. In other cases, older workers may well be more productive than younger, less experienced workers.

Even without the aid of the new science of neuroplasticity that shows how we can continue to increase our brain power as we age, studies have shown that age does not affect mental powers until middle to late 70s. And then it is a decrease in short term memory.

Solution? Carry a note book!

Programming people to get out of the work force at 65 when there is some memory loss in the mid to late 70s is like hitting a fly with a sledgehammer. Poor analogy maybe, but you get the idea.

There are a lot of positives that older workers have: fewer mistakes, fewer accidents, lower absenteeism and a stronger work ethic. As an employer, which would you rather have? A young person with lots of energy, bouncing off the walls, but also some “loose cannon” tendencies, or an experienced older person who you only have to ask to carry a notebook to compensate for some short term memory loss?

And why are not employers even asking this question? Could it be the programming is so deeply entrenched in the unconscious that this question would never even come up?

The Myth of Retirement Part Three

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

How We Got Here: A Brief History of Retirement

Prior to the Industrial Age, there was more “job satisfaction.” Author Robert Atchley in The Sociology of Retirement points out that a craftsman controls both process and product. That makes work a satisfying and integral part of his life.

On the other hand, an industrial worker is responsible for only a part of the process. Clearly, that is less rewarding. A craftsman had a craft and a vocation. With industrialization, those words were replaced by “job” and “occupation.”

Older people were valued and relied on for their insight, their deep knowledge hard won over a lifetime, their moral lessons and yes, their wisdom. Contrast that with the ageism that exists today with older people viewed as infirm, useless and/or “over the hill.” This did not happen by accident. There was a deliberate, conscious, sophisticated propaganda campaign to get you to take on these beliefs.

The year is 1905. Dr. William Osler, a highly respected doctor delivers his valedictory speech on leaving his post at Johns Hopkins University. Osler says: “Take the sum of human achievement in action, in science, in art, in literature. Subtract the work of men above 40, and while we would miss great treasures, even priceless treasures, we would practically be where we are today.”

He goes on to add that men older than 60 are entirely useless and a drain on society because of their inelastic minds. As you now know, that is absolute and utter bilge and balderdash as evidenced by the study of neuroplasticity you learned about in tip # 15.

Nevertheless, Osler floated the idea of what to do with all these “useless” 60 year olds. Send them to a “college” at age 60 for a year of contemplation…and then, we chloroform them! Kill ‘em off at age 61. Cute. He may have said it facetiously, but there is no evidence that he was booed off stage.

Fast forward to 1933, the absolute bottom of the Great Depression. One quarter of the labor force, thirteen million Americans, are out of work. Angry young men, fueled with testosterone, are on the streets. Communist and Fascist ideas are held up as solutions. This is a volatile mix. President Franklin D. Roosevelt decides to act.

He sets up public pensions to entice older men to retire so younger men could take their place, getting them off the streets where they might foment revolution.

And where did the “retirement age” of 65 come from? Quite possibly from German Chancellor Count Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck plucked “three score and ten years” from the Bible and used it as the threshold for pension benefits. A few years later, he lowered it to 65 because so few were collecting. German life expectancy at the time was 46!

And American life expectancy? 63. With so few living to 65, Roosevelt was not in danger of giving away the store. The Social Security Act taxed workers who far outnumbered the newly formed group to be called “retirees.” In fact, at the time there were 40 workers supporting each retiree.

As noted in the last tip, Boomers, those born between 1946 and 1960, far outnumber the generation following. AND they are living far longer. Many Boomers are keenly interested in their health, watching their diet, exercise and lifestyle and may even extend life expectancy.

The Myth of Retirement. Part Two. The Collapse of Retirement May Be The Best Thing That Can Happen.

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

The Collapse of Retirement May Be The Best Thing That Can Happen

Why?

Because it may open up undreamed of possibilities for Boomers for personal, professional and financial growth.

This retirement timetable that ruled our parents’ lives (I say “our” because I am a Boomer as well) may no longer apply. We will be free to live longer, happier, healthier and more rewarding lives. There need not be any painful compromises to reach an artificial goal. There need not be a finish line, a race.

Life is Not a Race.

Despite the heavy duty programming we are subject to in the media and by our peers, the only finish line is when we eventually shuck this mortal coil. And even death, if we are to believe in reincarnation, is just a transition and apparently, not even a painful one.

When we give up this artificial goal of retiring as soon as possible, we can change our view of what it means to age. The stereotypes of old age: infirmity, illness, taking pills, living in retirement homes are deeply ingrained in us.

Boomers are certainly starting to fight against it. See the new term invented by Canadian media mogul Moses Znaimer: “Zoomers” or Boomers with Zip.

That’s a positive step. I will suggest another step. Why don’t we start seeing ourselves as growing in skill, in patience, in health and in wisdom all through our lives…right up to when we die.

The new science of “Neuro-Plasticity” is showing us part of this new picture of health in older age. As we saw in Tip # 15 of 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health, researchers are showing us is that, if we continue to learn new skills, we can continue to grow neurons in the brain and can keep the brain vibrant and alive.

Here is one common example. We are programmed to believe in the myth that our memory becomes less acute in older age.

There is little to support the belief that we lose memory as we age.

As an aging boomer, I may walk into a room forgetting why I did so. What did I want in here? Ever had that experience?

Guess What? We all had memory lapses when we were younger. In fact, we have all had memory lapses all through our lives. We thought nothing of it. But because we are programmed to believe in memory loss in older age, we now attribute the current memory challenge as being caused by our age. We have even coined a term for it: “A senior moment.”

We may now become concerned about the potential for it getting worse as we age and perhaps even becoming Alzheimer’s disease.

This concern, if we feed it with enough emotion, can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. “What you focus on grows.” Another way of saying it is “Energy flows where attention goes.”

In other words, feed that thought about memory loss with enough words said often enough out loud or silently with emotion and we help it to become reality.

So, is the answer to retaining a good memory in older age as simple as not believing it and not worrying about it?

The answer may well be YES!

The challenge is to un-do a lifetime of programming we have been subjected to. The devil is in the details. We can refer to Tip # 15 again to see what actions we can take to keep the brain active, what neuroplasticity has to show us.

Also, here is where it can be useful to look at the history of retirement so we can unravel in our logical minds how we came to believe in it and in the other myths of aging.  We will do that next time.

The Myth of Retirement. Part One. Don’t Retire. There are Better Goals in Life.

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Mastery Newsletter

Retirement is a weird social experiment, a historical blip. Its collapse will be a triumph for common sense.

We are not meant to retire. There is nothing else in nature that retires. Plants and trees, animals and fish continue to grow…until they die.

Humans are the only ones, with their oversized brains, that have created this artificial state and goal of “taking it easy” when we get to a certain age.

We are not meant to “take it easy.” As we grow older, more knowledgeable and perhaps even wiser, we are meant to use the knowledge, the skill sets we have picked up and the wisdom to help others.

Instead, we as societies through our programming, have come to believe that older people are less useful. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The baby boomers, of which I am one, have been particularly aggressive in pursuing retirement and even early retirement. “Keeping up with the Jones’s” has come to mean the earlier you retire, the better off you are and the bigger bragging rights you have.

This goal and the attitudes around retirement are fraught with problems, with danger and these attitudes can even be deadly for a number of reasons.

First, with the economic challenges we are facing, the traditional retirement of the boomers’ parents may not even be possible. Pension plans, public and private, are in trouble and may indeed implode. In future tips, we will discuss the potential of high inflation and even possible hyperinflation and what it may mean for retirement plans. It is not a pretty picture.

In the nineties, I remember seeing a newspaper story of a Russian woman in the freezing streets of Moscow selling a wool sweater in order to buy food for her evening meal. The Russian currency had collapsed and her pension had been eaten up by inflation.

In future tips, you will see how the thought “It can’t happen here” is one of the more dangerous ones we could hold.

Regardless of what inflation we have in the future, the demographics work against a rosy retirement. There are just too many boomers to be supported by pensions which, by and large, are Ponzi schemes anyway.

The scheme has been working because of the number of boomers who have been contributing to a much smaller group of their parents who have retired. The generation following the boomers is far fewer in numbers and will not likely take to massive increases in their pension contributions to support, not themselves, but to their older generation, particularly as they too have been programmed to believe that old people are less than useful.

Further, as boomers downsize their homes as retirees tend to do, they may find they are not getting the dollars they were hoping for. By sheer weight of numbers, they will flood the market and the law of supply and demand has not been repealed, last time I checked. More supply than demand normally means lower prices. We have already seen what the punster call “a slowdown” in real estate sales and anecdotally I hear of people taking their houses off the market to wait for prices to recover. They may be waiting in vain.

So, market forces may be conspiring to make traditional retirement impossible for the boomers.

This may be the best thing that can happen. Why? Stay tuned.

The Secret to Absolute Certainty

                                        The Secret to Absolute Certainty

Sculpt Your Mind and Emotions to do Whatever it Takes to Achieve Your Goals

When you set a goal for yourself, do you hear a little voice inside that says you can’t do it? Is there a niggling feeling that causes you to doubt whether you can do it?

Is there an internal switch that can turn off that voice and turn on the afterburners of your desire?

Motivational speaker and author Tony Robbins tells us it may take an adjustment of just one or two millimeters to go from failure to incredible, outstanding mind-blowing success.  Just one or two millimeters!

The problem? Most people won’t do it. As we know from many sources: “Successful people do what failures won’t.”

Here’s how to separate yourself from the crowd.

Here’s how to train yourself to believe in yourself, 100%, by using your body and your voice.

Tony is clear that this is not affirmations. He calls it an “incantation.” In other words, this is done out loud with as much emotion as you can muster and moving your body. Here it is:

“I now command my subconscious mind to direct me in helping as many people as possible today to better their lives by giving me the strength, the emotions, the persuasion to do whatever it takes to get these people to change their lives NOW!"

And this is not done just once. In order to overwrite the inner voice that is telling us we can’t do it, we need to do this as much as possible, whenever possible until we change our physiology and this is the new “inner voice.”

Remember: “Successful people do what failures won’t.”

Further, when Tony talks about being just one or two millimeters off, he is also referring to our physiology. This is where posture comes into play. Watch this video to see exactly what he is talking about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0QwU5EJn7Q

As noted, “When two people meet, if there is rapport, the one who is most certain will always influence the other person!”

Therefore, don’t hope you will be in a good state, demand it of yourself!

Your mother was right when she said: “Sit up straight!”

First of all, it is actually easier to have good posture than poor posture. If you have been used to slouching, that may be hard to believe at first. Let’s think it through for a moment. Your head weighs how much? I am told about 25 pounds or just over 11 kilograms.

As an exercise, find something that weighs 25 pounds. If you have a 25-pound dumbbell, that will work. Otherwise, we can choose a briefcase and fill it with books. Be sure to weigh it on a scale to approximate 25 pounds. Even a large purse can be filled with 25 pounds of stuff.  Now, carry that around for an hour and notice what goes on in your body. You may find yourself changing the weight from one hand to the other, or even using two hands to carry it.  Then, imagine carrying that around for 16 hours. That’s what you are doing when you slouch. The head slouching forward means the muscles in your neck and upper back have to support the weight.

Alternatively, if you position your head so it is directly above the trunk of your body, your neck and upper back muscles don’t have to work as hard. Is this making sense?  Somehow, many of us have become “slouches” when it comes to posture. The subconscious belief may be that it is just easier to do that rather than try to be a soldier. Perhaps it is if we consider that a soldier may be required to tense all the muscles in the body to achieve a “military” posture or stance.

This is not about tensing. Rather, this is about positioning and then releasing those muscles or portions of muscles that are no longer required to keep the head from falling to the floor. (You may notice that some of these protocols start to blend into each other. Protocol #8, Posture, uses the same pro

Let’s do this:

Stand comfortably, feet about shoulder distance apart.  Imagine a silk cord at the top and back of your head, pulling your head up. This allows your spine to lengthen easily, effortlessly. It pulls your chin in a little as the silk cord gently eases the spine. Imagine the vertebrae being like pearls on a string, suspended by this silk cord.

Notice any tensions in the neck, upper back, lower back.  Allow those tensions to ease.  Rock gently back and forth, finding the spot where you are most centred, where you are using the least amount of muscle strength to hold yourself in place.  Do the same rocking, this time side to side, again finding the spot where you are using the least amount of muscle to hold yourself up.  Breathe gently.

Now, let’s practice how to keep this relaxed posture while walking.  Stay focused in the present moment by paying attention to the posture or stance and your breathing at the same time.  Stay totally relaxed or as relaxed as you can.  Imagine your right foot moving forward one step and your left following it.  Continuing to breathe and smile, gently allow your right foot to follow your imagination and allow your left foot to follow.  As you do so, feel your connection to the earth.  You may choose to continue for a few steps.

Notice how this feels.  The next time you are outside, you can choose to walk with this posture/stance and with this visualization of energy preceding your steps and of being connected to the earth as you walk.

Here are some other tips for posture: How to Create Good Posture

1.       As with anything else, we need good reasons to change long term entrenched habits. So, either a) copy and paste the 7 reasons for good posture (listed below) into a Word document, print them out and put them up where you can see them whenever and wherever you are sitting, or b) write “POSTURE!” on some post-it notes and stick them up.

2.       Pretend your body is held by a string. This is a tai-chi and martial arts technique and it works like a charm. Pretend that at the top back of your head, there is a titanium cord pulling the spine up. Notice as you do this, that your head naturally rises and your chin comes in a little bit. At the same time, focus on relaxing all your other muscles, especially the neck and surrounding muscles that may be chronically tight from constantly holding the head up. Give them time. This is a lifetime habit being changed, so be easy on them. Over time, you may find those muscles relaxing as they get the message that they no longer need to hold up this 25 pound weight.

3.       Get a head, shoulder and back massage. If you have always been in a bad posture, you will find that it’s hard to change your posture due to the hardening of your joints. A massage can loosen up those joints, which can make it easier to get into a better posture afterward.

4.       Eliminate bad habits that cultivate bad postures. This includes watching TV or reading while lying down, sleeping on your stomach and working under dim light, which results in slouching.

5.       Get a good quality chair, one that has good back support, including supporting the shoulders.

6.       Place your behind at the innermost edge of the chair. This helps set the right base for your posture. Many people have bad postures because they place their bottoms on the middle or towards the end of the chair. This causes them to lean forward or slouch forward and hunch since there is no support behind their backs to press against.

7.       Get a back cushion. (Optional) Put it at the back of your chair. Whenever you sit, make sure your back is wedging the cushion against the chair. Whenever you lean forward, the cushion will fall down which will act as a reminder to shift back into your proper posture.

8.       Ground both your feet when standing or sitting. This means having both feet planted flat on the floor and not resting your weight on a particular foot which is a very common habit. While sitting, try not to cross your legs. This helps to keep the upper part of our body straight.

9.       Invest in a good bed and pillow. Get a mattress that is firm and not too soft. The soft mattresses, that you sink into, may feel nice and comfy initially, but are not good for your back and posture. For your pillow, consider investing in an orthopedic pillow. The most common is contour pillows which are pillows that arch and support your head.

10.    Avoid carrying heavy items. The simpl act of carrying heavy items is bad for the shoulders and back. Over time, it can gradually lead to hunched shoulders and backs. If it’s not possible to reduce the load of things you carry around, you can consider getting a trolley bag or roller bag—these are really convenient and are becoming commonplace.

11.    Re exercise: the usual advice here is to work on strengthening the back muscles. The reality is your back muscles are probably already too strong! This was outlined in Mademoiselle Bertherat's wonderful little book The Body Has Its Reasons. The suggestion instead is to work on releasing the chronic tension most of us carry in the back muscles just as we do in the neck muscles. Yoga, tai-chi and stretching are all forms I have tried and can recommend. Good instruction is vital, so seek out someone who feels right for you.

12.    If you have a history of back pain and/or back injuries, it may be wise to get a professional assessment with a trusted chiropractor or physical therapist.

13.   Take regular breaks when sitting. I have a music CD loaded in my computer. When it stops playing, I stop, get up and get a drink of water or a snack.

14.    Take a long-term view. You are changing life-long habits. Be easy on yourself. Don’t expect miracles overnight. You may, however, see a miracle over time in more joy, energy and health. Especially if you combine good posture with laughing, smiling and breathing. (LSPB!)

7 reasons for focusing on good posture are:

1. It helps you to breathe deeper and better.

2. It Iincreases your concentration and thinking. More air, more oxygen. More oxygen, more brain food. More brain food leads to higher quality thoughts and ideas.

3. It helps to keep back pains away. Bad posture, over time, can contribute to risk of slipped disc, back aches, back pain, pressure inside your chest and poor blood circulation.

4. You expeience less fatigue and less stress. Think about it. Your head weighs about 25 pounds, more or less. If your head is not in its proper place resting easily directly above your body, then your muscles have to support it. Why do you think people get sore neck muscles? Because those neck muscles are supporting a head that is tilted forward, not sitting where it was designed to sit and has to be supported by neck muscles. Constant tension means constant stress. (And you have already heard or read about stress being rated as the number one killer.)

5. It supports the best possible muscle performance. Because of optimal biomechanics.

6. It creates optimal organ function.Good posture ensures your organs are aligned how they were designed and that can lead to them working more harmoniously together.

7. It improves your image.People with good posture look smarter and more attractive. Have you ever seen someone with a bad posture and felt the person seemed unkempt, even though the person has not said or done anything yet? On the flip side, someone with a good posture naturally exudes an aura of assertiveness and appeal.

Your mission for this week, should you decide to accept: Do the Posture Protocol.

Time Commitment: 1 minute twice a day. Total 2 minutes. You may choose to walk with this focus, attention and intention. You are walking anyway, so this does not take any extra time.

Bare Bones Minimum Daily Time Commitment:  9 & 1/2 minutes a day.  If you choose to optimize:  Optimum Daily Time Commitment: 21 minutes a day.

Once again, it is time to stop reading and put this manual away.  Put this manual down now and stop reading.  This is not a raceTake at least one day to one week with this exercise.  See ya next time.

Chapter One

Is Mould Dangerous? The Case For and Against

“The Harvard University School of Public Health studied 10,000 homes in the US and Canada and found that half of them had mold that resulted in a 50 to 100 % increase in respiratory symptoms.” –http://www.moldrx4u.com/

“You have mould.” Those words can be almost as fear and panic inducing as “You have cancer.”

The first step is to remember to breathe. Trust that there is a solution. Horror stories aside, there also appear to be relatively inexpensive, non-toxic ways to create a mold free environment.

I must admit I felt the anxiety when I suspected mould from the “musty” smell. My native healer Doug had told me he smelled mould on me and I just filed the info away. But when I started getting some coughing, swollen and itchy eyes, poor sleeps and a few other choice symptoms usually associated with mould in the home, I decided to ask for help.

My email friends and acquaintances were quick to respond with over 5 dozen emails and many different ideas and avenues to research. The result is this report.

a. Is Mould Dangerous? The Case Against: No Scientific Proof Says This Doctor

There is controversy about how dangerous mold is. John, a doctor who advises lawyers on medical aspects of their cases, sent me this:

My contribution (from my Electronic Handbook of Legal Medicine) is not what you might expect.  There is a lot of hype and hysteria around mold with reference to human health.  While there are very occasionally serious health consequences, the vast majority of the time it is nuisance and some common symptoms are misattributed.

The Handbook he refers to indicates that: Well-substantiated conditions caused by mould allergy, infection and ingestion are relatively rare. Almost all Toxic Mould litigation is based on research that is scientifically flawed…

And that: The majority of Toxic Mould litigation is scientifically unsupportable…

b. Is Mould Dangerous? The Case For…by the Government of Canada

The Government of Canada Website says this: “All moulds pose a risk to respiratory health and should be removed, regardless of the type of mould.” –from the Canada Government site

My friend Ron, consultant on environmental health matters, says this:

“It’s always moisture that allows the mould to grow. In older homes there may be a lack of a good moisture barrier and insufficient ventilation. Although this is a building construction issue, there are serious health issues from mould for many of us.

Generally, the most commonly reported symptoms include:

Is “Black” Mould Worse?

From the Government of Canada site:

“You may hear mention of so-called "toxic" mould species, often referring to "black mould" or the genus Stachybotrys.

While it is true that some moulds do naturally produce toxic substances (known as mycotoxins), there is not sufficient evidence that these moulds have different or greater health effects than other moulds.

All moulds pose a risk to respiratory health and should be removed, regardless of the type of mould.”

       runny nose or nasal congestion

       eye irritation

       cough or congestion

       aggravation of asthma

       fatigue

       headaches, and

       difficulty concentrating.

Moulds can also exacerbate (make worse) the symptoms of allergies including wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath as well as nasal congestion and eye irritation. It is important to appreciate that we don’t all respond to mould in the same way, our bodies have had different exposures and we have different sensitivities to mould. A parent may feel just fine, however their child may be seriously affected. People who are immuno-suppressed, or recovering from surgery are usually more susceptible to health problems from moulds… Stachybotrys is one of the more serious forms of mould in terms of human health and we’ve seen a lot of media attention to its removal in schools. Testing to identify the particular type of mould is expensive. It is more practical to simply remove any type of mould. Therefore if you see mould, wash and disinfect the area, regardless of what type of mould it is. Helpful information is available on the BC Ministry of Health ‘Health File’ located at:

http://www.healthlinkbc.ca/healthfiles/hfile65b.stm

Note that despite what the sidebar says, another part of the Government of Canada site does refer to testing that shows Stachybotrys having higher toxicity. Read below.

Health Canada has carried out two reviews of the scientific literature pertaining to the health effects of indoor moulds (Health Canada 1995; 2004). The Institut national de santé publique du Québec also published a review on this subject (d'Halewyn et al. 2003). The following conclusions were drawn:

exposure to indoor mould is associated with an increased prevalence of asthma-related symptoms such as chronic wheezing, irritation symptoms, and non-specific symptoms; and

in laboratory animal studies, instillation of fungal antigens (Penicillium sp. and Aspergillus sp.) and fungal cell components [(1->3)-ß-D-glucan] resulted in an inflammatory response in the lungs of rodents, while instillation of Stachybotrys chartarum spores resulted in severe histological and biochemical changes. (My bolding)

These conclusions have been supported by more recent findings. In two cohort studies (Wickman et al. 2003; Jaakkola et al. 2005), significant associations were found between home dampness and the risk of developing asthma. In experimental studies, asthma-like responses were observed in mice following exposure to a typical building-associated fungus, Penicillium chrysogenum (Chung et al. 2005), and inflammatory responses were seen in rats exposed to low doses of toxins from the same species (Rand et al. 2005).

c. Is Mould Dangerous? The Case For…by a Doctor Who Specializes in Mould

From Dr. Mercola’s site:

Jack Thrasher, PhD, is extremely knowledgeable on the topic of mold and how it impacts your health. Interestingly, from a toxicity point of view, some mycotoxins that molds produce are actually far more toxic than heavy metals, in terms of concentration. Mold mycotoxins also tend to affect more biological systems in your body than pesticides or heavy metals do.

"For example, stachybotrys produces mycotoxins referred to as trichothecene. They inhibit protein synthesis. It infects every organ of your body from your toes to the top of your head," Dr. Thrasher says. "I really think that the molds are much more dangerous from that point of view."

This flies in the face of what is commonly appreciated about toxic contaminants. Most would assume that pesticides or heavy metals would be far more dangerous. However, mold is a very significant health issue. And despite the fact that molds have been around forever, mankind has not developed greater tolerance against them than more modern chemical toxins. Part of that is because they tend to rapidly mutate.

"Let's take a look at Cryptococcus for example," Dr. Thrasher says. "Cryptococcus used to be endemic to the deserts of southwest United States. Now there is a new species… that was accidentally released up in Vancouver, Canada. It's spreading from the northwest throughout the country. It's a mutated form, [and] highly pathogenic to humans. About 25 to 30 percent of the humans who have become infected with it die… When they mutate they avoid our immune system.

The other thing they can do is produce chemicals that suppress your immune system at the same time. So therefore, I don't think we'll ever become resistant to these organisms."

Chapter Two

Bacteria—Another Health Risk Related to Mould Damage

Growing right along with Mould are what's called 'gram negative' and 'gram positive' bacteria. Just like Mould, they require moisture and organic material to thrive, and the synergistic action between Mould and bacteria further increase and worsen inflammatory health conditions.

"The gram positive are group of bacteria that are being totally overlooked," Dr. Thrasher says.

"These positive bacteria consist of several bacilli, cocci, and one group called the actinomycetes. The actinomycetes contain several different groups of bacteria like mycobacterium. We're all familiar with… mycobacterium tuberculosis.

There are 139 other species of mycobacterium that can grow in our environment and 11 to 12 of those in the indoor environment are very serious human pathogens and can cause a condition called mycobacterium avium complex… and this is a very dangerous situation. It causes serious infection of the lungs and can spread throughout the body. Many of the symptoms are those of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. The condition can go on and develop into an asthma-like condition and then also into sarcoidosis particularly of the mediastinum.

Then the other group are the streptomyces… Streptomyces gave rise to a lot of antibiotics. Also, streptomyces are a source of many of the chemotherapeutic agents that are used today. These organisms are growing in the indoor environment."

Gram negative bacteria are also extremely harmful. When they die, they release their cell walls, which are referred to as lipopolysaccharide, or endotoxins. These endotoxins can severely exacerbate asthma and other conditions because they are highly inflammatory. According to Dr. Thrasher, research indicates the inflammation they cause can also affect your brain and other organs.

Chapter Three

Should You Do-It-Yourself or Call In The Experts?

Mike Holmes of Holmes on Homes says:

Every home has mould. But not every home has a mould problem. And, even though people are concerned about mould in their homes only a small percentage of tested mould is very dangerous, such as Stachybotrys, known as "toxic" or "black" mould. …

(Note: we have learned from the Government of Canada site that all mould can be a problem and Stachybotrys or “black” mould is no different, despite the reputation.-Matti)

This might surprise you, especially if you think you have a mould problem, but testing isn’t generally recommended for homeowners who think they might have a mould problem. It can be expensive and it takes time and special equipment.

Most importantly, a test might show the presence of mould in your home, or what kind of mould you have, but there are no ‘safe levels’ of indoor moulds—so the results might show you have mould, but not tell you if it is really dangerous.

And, the test won’t tell you what the source of the mould is, or where moisture might be entering your home. You’d be better off spending the money on fixing the problem….

Mould Specialist Weighs In:

Dr. Jack Thrasher, who has a PhD in cell biology from the UCLA School of Medicine, and is an expert on the impact of mold on human health, disagrees.

How to Detect a Mold Problem

Clearly, the first step would be to conduct a visual inspection. A musty, mildew odor is a tip-off that you need to check the area in question for any visible signs of mold. If you can't see any visible traces of mold, Dr. Thrasher recommends taking an air sample, and using a moisture meter to determine the moisture level in the area.

"I use a moisture meter on every wall of the building or the home looking for hidden moisture. The moisture content of wood flooring, for example, should be no more than 10 to 12 percent. I'm finding floors that have moisture content of 48 percent. Exterior walls shouldn't have anything more than 15 percent, and I'm finding exterior walls with 40, 50, 60 percent.

… The other thing I recommend is to not rely on air samples from Mould spore counts. Invariably, that will give you misinformation. The number of Mould spores that are in the indoor environment and the outdoor environment vary over the day; it's a diurnal type variation… So it's not a very reliable test for what's in the air.

Secondly, there are certain bacteria that do not release their spores into the air very regularly and you won't find them in the air… So become educated as to what to look for and how to look for it, and don't accept somebody coming in, taking an air sample and saying, "There is nothing wrong with this because the indoor counts are less than outdoor counts." That's wrong logic. Certain species of Mould grow indoors much more regularly than they do outdoors. So you have to look at the species of Mould, not just the spores."

A better option is to do 24-hour monitoring. However, this type of testing cannot be performed by a typical Mould inspector. You need to hire a high-level Mould expert for this type of air testing. (I'll list several sources for finding a qualified expert below.) Dr. Thrasher also suggests interviewing the expert in question to find out who they typically work for.

"If they're doing work for insurance companies stay away from them," he says. "You want somebody who is unbiased… [Also] ask them the question, "If you take the airborne Mould in the indoor environment can it hurt you or cause toxic reaction?" If the person says, "No, don't worry about it. All it can do is cause allergies," then stay away from that person. That person is not well informed."

After air sampling, Dr. Thrasher also takes swab and bulk samples of the Mould growth; actually cutting out a piece of the affected area if necessary, for proper lab testing. Dr. Thrasher explains what he typically tests for:

"We culture for the bacteria. We culture for the Mould. We do what we call ERMI (Environmental Relative Moldiness Index), which is an EPA test that was developed by a group in the EPA. This is a PCR-DNA analysis for 31 different species of Mould… that is very inexpensive, relatively speaking. It costs $350 to do that test… [W]e take swab samples looking for endotoxins. We also look for… polysaccharides called 1,3-beta-D-glucans… We want to get a good idea what's going on in the indoor environment."

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Two Opinions:

1. Don’t test for mould. Instead, spend your money on fixing the problem, or

2. Spend $350 and get your home tested for mould.

You notice I am trying to give you both sides of the equation. You will have to decide yourself based on the information you see here and any other sources you choose research.

Personally, I am first going to apply some of the solutions in Chapter Five and then track the feedback. In other words, I will take note if the solutions produce results by decreasing my symptoms.

In the case of visible mould where you can see the mould and don’t have any symptoms that you can identify, then seeing the mould removed may be enough. Keep in mind that I am not an expert and we are getting contradictory advice. You may choose to use your intuition as well.

Mike Holmes:

A mould area is considered large if a single patch of mould is larger that a square meter.

Do not attempt to clean up large areas of mould yourself–being exposed to this much mould isn’t a good idea.  You need professional help to determine why the mould is there in the first place and how to clean it up.

Call a building-damage restoration specialist or a building contractor who has experience removing mould. And it could be costly. To remove large areas of mouldy materials is dangerous at best and should be done by a professional who will follow all government health regulations. You may even have to leave your home while the clean up takes place, if the problem is really bad.

Chapter Four

Choosing a Remediator…If You Decide You Need One.

This may be more challenging than just choosing a name from the yellow pages or a Google search. Dr. Mercola:

I recently had a leak in my basement that was improperly remediated for $10K. The cause was not addressed so the problem worsened, which more than tripled the price to properly clean it up. That is part of the reason that prompted me to contact some of the leading experts in this area and learn how to do this properly.

So let me tell you from personal experience, you need to find a qualified expert and professional that is certified by one of the agencies below. I would also suggest getting several bids for the work. You can find contractor or professional listings on the following sites. Both the IICRC and NORMI are certifying organizations for Mould remediation, but the IICRC certification is perhaps the most widely used:

IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification)

 http://iicrc.org/

ACAC (American Council for Accredited Certification)—a certifying body that is third-party accredited.

http://www.acac.org/

The IAQA (Indoor Air Quality Association)—a membership organization with no certification program (the ACAC handles this by agreement) www.iaqa.org

        RIA (Restoration Industry Association)

 http://www.restorationindustry.org/

NORMI (National Organization of Remediators and Mould Inspectors)                 http://www.normi.org/

Keep in mind that a mere certification or listing may not be enough. Also evaluate the remediator's qualifications and insurance (liability as well as workman's comp). With the ACAC, there are a few different levels.

Chapter Five

Do-It-Yourself Solutions…The First Four

Solution #1: Thieves Oil

From James Christian, Director and Dean, School of Phytotherapy. Pacific Rim College, Victoria BC, Canada.

(Thieves) is a combination of oils that was used during the plague by thieves (hence the name) to be able to walk amongst those that were infected with the disease and steal from them. It is said to be a very effective agent for infectious diseases. Some have suggested that using this oil in a diffuser in your home is great at minimizing infections and has been used to kill off mold. Here is a website: http://www.secretofthieves.com/mold.cfm

I would also recommend mixing Thyme Essential Oil, Tea Tree Essential Oil, Rosemary Essential Oil and some Cedar Essential Oil to some water and using it as a spritzer to spray on areas of mold within the house.

Hopefully that can help! Cheers, James

From Secret of Thieves Website:

Mold expert stumbles upon an amazingly powerful and non-toxic method of toxic mold removal…in his wife's aromatherapy kit

In 2005, Edward Close, PhD, a mold remediation consultant with 30 years experience in the environmental industry, was asked to do third-party sampling for mold in an apartment complex that had been flooded, evacuated, and later put up for sale. The buyer who was renovating the apartments had paid a company which had used the strongest stuff they knew of—a hospital disinfectant. Yet Dr Close's sampling showed that either the product had not killed the mold or that the mold had already re-established itself.

After much urging by his wife, he diffused Thieves oil in the apartments for a 24-hour period. The research project yielded astonishing results! And two weeks later they were even more astonishing!

In another instance, 10,667 stachybotrys mold spores were identified in a per cubic meter area. After diffusing Thieves essential oil for 48 hours, Dr Close retested. Only thirteen stachybotrys remained. Similarly, 75,000 stachybotrys mold spores were identified in a sample of sheetrock. After 72 hours of diffusing, no stachybotrys Mould spores remained.

Disappearing Toxic Mould Spores

10,667 to 13 in 48 hours

75,000 to 0 in 72 hours

Most remarkable to Mould remediation experts is that three factors about Thieves oil merge to create a perfect storm against toxic Mould…

It's powerful. But so is diesel fuel.

It's safe. Many things (like diesel) may kill Mould, but they are toxins themselves. So you exchange toxins and the building is still uninhabitable. Thieves oil has an FDA supplement facts panel on the label. It's so safe that workers can breath it while it's diffusing.

It's long-lasting. While Mould may be reduced immediately by standard remediation products, it often makes a fast comeback. Thieves continues killing the Mould for weeks afterward.

Dr Close documented his first 20 case studies (yielding similar results) in his book Nature's Mould Rx, the Non-Toxic Solution to Toxic Mould. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0978561619?ie=UTF8&tag=eatonessentia-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0978561619

From Carollynne:

Hi Matti,

You are certainly on the right track with the ozone machine.  That is hands down the best way to go and then follow up with Thieves.

(Note: We discuss the ozone generators later. – Matti)

We used Thieves alone downstairs in a bedroom where there were Rubbermaid containers against the cement wall causing condensation on the wall.  It was in a baby's room so I had the mother wash all of his clothes and wipe down everything as spores are airborne.  Then we put the dehumidifier in there and cranked up the heat.

The short answer would be to scrub off any black Mould or Mould that you see with Thieves cleaner.  I fear that we may also be dealing with the same issue.  If you don't have any Thieves cleaner I always have it on hand and will be taking anything that is against our bedroom walls away from there and washing them down with a strong solution of Thieves.  Apparently from what I have read online bleach does NOT work.  I am then going to diffuse Thieves in the bedroom and turn up the heat.  We also have a dehumidifier in here and an ozone air filter that we have on most of the time.  The most important thing that friends of ours did in Duncan was to take the chest of drawers that were in the closet out so that the closet could breathe.  Dry air is important.  As you know yeasts and molds thrive in dark, moist, warm areas.

We moved in here in June when the weather was good and of course it has been sunny all summer.  There was black Mould in the bedroom wall of where we are sleeping when the last tenant vacated and Brown Brother's painters used Kilz on it then re-painted it with paint that had something in it.  I still smelled Mould right from the beginning and was not sure whether it was suggestibility because I knew that there had been Mould before but of course my story is that I am super sensitive to that and that it has been here all along.  Now Will is smelling it so it is time for us to get our bedroom really cleaned out, crank up the heat and use the Thieves.

To humor me and because Will is very allergic to grass and other pollens we have slept with a dehumidifier in our room in the area where our landlord said that the bed was before.  I still smell it as I sleep closest to that wall but at the other end.  Now with the rain we are smelling it in the hallway which is not on an outside wall,  Very strange.  As we don't have any storage here there are still boxes of things that I have to get rid of.  This may be the incentive that I need.  I think shredding old papers that I will never look at again may be the start.

Watch the You Tube by clicking Thieves above, Google Thieves and Mould and you should find something there.  Again, I think you are taking the right approach.

All the best,

Carollyne

Solution # 2 Vinegar, Baking Soda and Elbow Grease

… for minor visible surface Mould on say a baseboard, or on a piece of furniture, you could use a little bit of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and vinegar to wipe it off.

"I just use the concentrated vinegar and baking soda," he says. "All you need is a couple of tablespoons [of baking soda] to a quart of water. The vinegar I just take straight out of the bottle… I generally do the vinegar first and then follow it with the baking soda… The vinegar will kill the Mould and the bacteria but you're going to leave residue on the surface and so you scrub the surface to try to get rid of the residue.

… I never validated that procedure, but that's what I recommend; what I do use and it seems to work, but I haven't validated it with research data. I have to be honest with the population out there."

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/07/30/dr-thrasher-on-the-health-dangers-of-mold.aspx

Solution # 3: Concrobium

Andy recommended this, as did the lady at Rona Building Supply and Helen sent this:

Dear Matti,

A wonderful product that we have used to get rid of Mould is called Concrobium Mould control. It is 100% natural… It kills, cleans and prevents Mould. It comes in a spray bottle White bottle with a blue and green label.

Do you know where the mould is? If you can't see it you might have to call a professional to look into it. But if you know where it is and can see it, then this product will take care of it. Hope this helps.

Solutions: The Final Four

Solution # 5: Colloidal Silver

Hi Matti

I can recommend Colloidial Silver. We have the system to make it. You can buy the gizmo and make it by the gallon in about 3 hours. Put it in a spitzer and or wash the areas with it and it is an amazing mould control.

That all I have to assist you my brother. If you get the mould control guys in it will cost you 10's of thousands of dollars to bring it under control.

Roger

Solution # 6: Sulfur

The only thing that will kill Mould 100% & keep it away and is organic is Sulfur…  if it is in your home you need to buy to buy or borrow a sulfur burner it heats up the sulfur to a liquid form and the vapor fills the room and gets into every nook and cranny.. it leaves a thin film that is the wrong PH for Mould to grow on. this is what is used in the restoration places and in greenhouses to control Mould …. you can also make a spray with baking soda or if you can find it potassium bi-carbonate …. and spray that .. it again changes the ph and kills the Mould ….. molds need humidity to grow so a dehumidifier should also be used to prevent it getting a foothold again….

Good luck … is this the idea for a new book on home made cures for everything ?

Solution # 7 Chlorine Dioxide gas

Hi Matti,

In New Orleans, after Katrina, they used Chlorine Dioxide gas to kill Mould and recover buildings.

It is approved for around-food use and so is not inherently virulently toxic. It is selective and principally kills pathogens.

You have to handle it with care, however. At a 15% concentration in the air it is explosive.

Solution # 8: Ozone: Be Careful!

This is a tricky one. My friend Gene loaned me his Ozone machine and I feel results. I had it going in the bedroom for some hours, then turned it off at night and opened the window to air out the ozone. Ozone has a reputation as being dangerous to the respiratory system. Consumer Reports refuses to even test air cleaners that produce ozone because of the respiratory effects. Here is Ron, the environmental health consultant, again:

…when you’re putting together info on mould I hope you can include the harmful health effects on people from ozone generation. ‘Air purifiers’ emitting low levels of ozone were sold as providing air purification by destroying odour and removing viruses, bacteria, and mould. These claims were untrue. This kind of air purifier was claimed to imitate nature's way of purifying the air without filters and to sanitize both it and household surfaces. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared that there is "evidence to show that at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals" or "viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological pollutants." Furthermore, its report states that "results of some controlled studies show that concentrations of ozone considerably higher than these [human safety] standards are possible even when a user follows the manufacturer’s operating instructions." The American government successfully sued one company in 1995, ordering it to stop repeating health claims without supporting scientific studies.

In my work with commercial ozone generation in the water industry I’ve seen the effects of ozone on equipment and structures. Ozone destroys not only the ozone generating equipment in a few months, and other equipment in the room, but the room itself. Nails, metal piping, fixtures, brackets, even the door handles. Hard to believe without seeing the aftermath of ozone exposure. I recognize this is on a much larger scale than home generation equipment, though it will have the same effect, just on a smaller scale and takes longer.

Ozone is a very powerful oxidant, harming lung function and our respiratory system, contributing to asthma, bronchitis, heart attack and other cardiopulmonary symptoms. The O3 reacts so very quickly that it isn’t able to travel much past the generator outlet. Due to all the harmful effects on humans and pets I wouldn’t have an ozone generator in my house.

Ron indicated that when one turns off the ozone machine, it stops producing right away and there was no need to air out the room. So I asked him: What is the smell of ozone that lingers then??? Here is his answer:

That’s a good question Matti.

Ozone is usually produced in home products between two highly charged electrostatic plates. Ambient air is passed between the plates and ozone comes out the discharge tube, and I noticed it does have a ‘disinfectant smell’ but only when I practically pushed the outlet tube up my nose. If ozone is building up so strong you can smell it, then it will be doing damage to your room structure, even with the wall paint and house plants, and will be adversely affecting your health.

Wikipedia reports that most people can detect about 0.01 μmol/mol of ozone in air where it has a very specific sharp odor somewhat resembling chlorine bleach. Exposure of 0.1 to 1 μmol/mol produces headaches, burning eyes, and irritation to the respiratory passages.[6] Even low concentrations of ozone in air are very destructive to organic materials such as latex, plastics, and animal lung tissue.

Ozone is an interesting gas, and useful for commercial use where it is contained, such as disinfecting drinking water, but don’t get close to it. So much better to physically remove the mould rather than to exposure yourself to ozone.

Ron, Environmental Consultant

More On Ozone from Dr. Mercola:

While Dr. Thrasher does not recommend using an ozone generator, other indoor air experts do. Ozone generators essentially generate photocatalytic oxidation that can help destroy airborne Mould. However, Dr. Thrasher strongly cautions against their use, stating that oxidizing an organic chemical of any kind will create free radicals, and he also points out that ozone can be highly irritating to your mucous membranes and lungs.

Personally, I believe the claim that ozone generators facilitate the removal of volatile organics is correct… But do beware that they should not be used when you're in the room at levels higher than the EPA recommends, and they do pose a danger to both plants and pets. However, the ozone dissipates quickly, so after airing the area out for about 20 minutes, it's safe to return.

Keep in mind that this is different from air filtration, as the ozone generator actually purifies the air and neutralizes any odors at the source, on the molecular level.

Chapter Seven

What NOT To Use: Is This Popular Remedy a Recipe for Disaster?

Do NOT Use Bleach or Ammonia!

Dr. Mercola:

If you have just a small area of surface mold, you probably don't have to call in an expert. However, only attempt to clean it if it's limited to the surface of a small area. You cannot "clean" deep-rooted mold. Dr. Thrasher has one word for those of you who have bought into the home-remedy advice to "kill off mold" with ammonia or bleach: Don't.

"What happens is you'll kill the mold but you'll leave the carcass behind," Dr. Thrasher explains. "The carcass will disintegrate and release toxins into the air. So you really went from one problem (mold growth) to another problem; dead mold and the release of all of their toxins… and then once water is reintroduced in the environment, the mold will grow right back to the surface."

 http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/07/30/dr-thrasher-on-the-health-dangers-of-mold.aspx

Chapter Eight

Prevention: “An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure”

That certainly applies here. It is easier to keep a house dry and not get mould than to have to deal with the results of a damp house.

Here are some ideas: From Government of Canada site:

When you see water or moisture act quickly

Check home foundation, walls, windows, roof, plumbing, tubs and sinks for water leaks. If you find a leak or a spill, dry the area and fix the leak.

Check window sills regularly for condensation or moisture, particularly during the cold months. If found, act quickly to dry the wet surface.

Ventilate your home

Turn on an exhaust fan or open a window when showering or cooking. Let the fan run for a few minutes after you are finished.

Check clothes dryer, bathroom and kitchen fans, stoves, and oil or propane heaters to be sure they are vented outside.

Open windows, when practical. Use fans as needed.

Did you know?

Controlling moisture and keeping your home dry is the key to preventing and stopping mould growth.

Keep your home warm and ensure good air circulation.

Rooms or areas that become cold can encourage condensation to form and surrounding materials to become damp and mouldy.

Keep furniture and other belongings away from exterior walls to allow warm air to circulate.

Remove items that may cause mould

Reduce the amount of stored materials, especially in the basement and closets.

Throw out wet and badly damaged or musty smelling items.

Do not store firewood inside the home.

Remove carpet in bathroom and basements that are damp.

Avoid storing items in cardboard boxes on basement floors.

Keep your home clean and dry. Clean and dry surfaces that get wet, such as:

Drip pans in your air conditioner, refrigerator, and dehumidifier.

Washing machine/tub, bathtub/shower, and surrounding walls.

Vacuum carpets and furniture often.

Keep drains in kitchen, bathroom and basement floor clear of debris.

Use air conditioners and dehumidifiers during humid weather, if possible.

Minimize other indoor moisture sources

Avoid hanging laundry to dry indoors when possible. Remove dryer lint after each use.

Don't over-water plants and watch for signs of mould in the plants.

Take out garbage regularly.

Keep your sump pit covered.

Prevent water from entering your home

Install downspout extensions to take rainwater and melted snow away from the home.

Make sure eaves troughs/roof gutters and downspouts are connected and working. Clean and repair regularly.

Make sure the ground slopes away from the home foundation, so that water does not collect around the foundation and enter the home.

Is Mould A Pandemic?

According to Dr. Thrasher, the prevalence of mold in America is so great, he refers to it as pandemic. As many as 40 percent of all American schools and at least 25 percent or more of all homes are believed to be affected by mold and microbial growth due to water intrusion. A large portion of the problem stems from shoddy construction.

He explains:  "One thing that I have seen and observed by working with individuals in the field who understand construction, is that construction is extremely poor in the homes we have today. Plus, they're using building materials that are tremendous good food material for the microbes.

When I was a child… all the homes were built with genuine lath and plaster on the inside. [Now] you walk in and knock on any wall and you have what we call wallboard. That wallboard loves and is a good growth medium for all forms of mold. Everyone that I can think of, almost everyone now has carpets. The backside of carpets is also a great growth medium for mold and bacteria.

… The other type of home that I'm seeing that is of tremendous potential problems to the homeowner is homes that are built with a basement… [T]hey put the concrete down, and there is no water barrier between the earth and the concrete wall of the basement.

The same thing with the foundation, there is no water barrier. So when you water your yard, when there are heavy rains and things like this, the moisture… goes right to the foundation and into the basement or underneath the house, and then the moisture wicks up through the home, increasing humidity.

All of that increasing humidity, anything above 60 percent is going to lead to growth of mold and bacteria… People have to be very careful about this situation. That's the reason why I call it a pandemic."

Gutters can also cause problems. You need to be mindful of the drainage from your roof. I didn't realize this myself, and suffered the consequences when one of the gutters on my home drained onto the ground directly beside the wall, and the water seeped straight through to my basement. So you want to make sure the downspout is far enough away from the building. Ideally, it should empty at least 5 to 10 feet from the wall. You also want to take care that the soil next to the walls of your home slopes away from the walls, to prevent water from collecting around the foundation. And make sure your lawn sprinklers do not spray the walls. Other common construction issues that can contribute to water intrusion and subsequent mold proliferation include:

Using polyethylene PVC piping instead of copper or galvanized piping, which can be easily punctured by nails or staples

Bath tubs installed with improper sealing around the drain

Improperly sealed sinks and garbage disposal

Installing particleboard (waferboard) after it has been rained on during construction

a. Dehumidifier

From Esther:

Hi Matti,

If I had mold, the first thing I would do is get a dehumidifier. Without moisture, it can’t grow. It worked like a charm for me in a house I owned and we recently used one at the church to get rid of mold…

Moisture Building Up?

October 24, 2006

It never fails, folks. Every Fall I start getting calls about condensation on windows, mold on the walls in the bedrooms, stains behind bedroom dressers, stains on ceilings and it goes on and on. Some homeowners stress the fact that they have just put in new windows; so why the moisture? Well let it be known you have tightened your home up a few notches so lets go back a few steps.

1. What have you done all summer long to vent you home i.e.: Basement or Crawl Space?

2. What improvements have you made to your home windows, doors, ventilation, siding, roofing, insulation etc.

3. What have you done to compensate for these changes in exhaust ventilation, heat recovery ventilation, continual flow furnace motors ? Oops! None of these? Not even crawlspace or basement ventilation ?

The moisture you are now fighting with in most cases has been with you all summer, locked in the basement or crawlspace waiting for you to start up the heating system. Incidentally, this holds true for those of you who have radiant heat as well. Now, you’re heating air containing moisture, expanding it many times, and now it is looking for a way out of your home. So vent the crawlspace or basement with a Humidex System or use a bathroom fan controlled by a dehumidistat or open a window with your summer furnace blower activated or even use your range hood fan in the kitchen.

When you see signs of moisture you must start venting to reduce the relative humidity to a level below dew point. Purchase a humidity indicator to control moisture levels.

There should be a guide on the dehumidistat for the recommended inside humidity setting that is acceptable for the outside air temperature.

Summer Temperatures = 50% Humidity Setting

0 to -12C = 40% humidity setting

-12 to -18C = 35%

-19 to -25C = 25%

-25 to -30C = 20%

-31 or below = 15%

c. For Boats: Granules to Soak up Moisture and Other Fixes

Matti,

Simply they are a small container that contains some granules which attract water vapour from the air.  I use a unit called a Dri-Z-Air in the boat and in my house, as well I use a multitude of the $1 variety, they are called 'damp trap' and are thrown away when full of water, with the others you can empty the water and add more granules.

If my home, or boat, remained heated over the winter I would use a plug-in dehumidifier, unfortunately they are not effective at lower temperatures.

The long term fix for the house is the installation of a 'mini-split' ductless heat pump (these have been commonplace in motels/hotel rooms for yrs) they have the capacity to heat/cool the house as well as removing moisture and filtering the air.  I rec'd a quote for one, installed $4,500.  Fact is, I will purchase a unit in the US this year and install it myself, cost about $800.

All this is based on the belief that mold thrives on damp environments.  With the heat pump I'll be able to leave it on while away, at a low setting and I believe it will be fairly inexpensive and make the house a lot more healthy when we return…

…the granule containers are generally for closets and boats, cars, RV'S that are left unused during winter.. far better to use an electric dehumidifier in a heated home,
improves air quality and saves energy, easier to feel warm in drier air than a humid environment, less mold.

Chapter Nine

Conclusions

☞ The Canadian Government and mould expert Dr. John Thrasher agree that mould is a problem.

☞ It appears all mould has dangers, not just "black" mould or Stachybotrys.

☞ It appears mould can cause symptoms and may make allergy symptoms worse.

☞ Bacteria may make mould worse.

☞ With visible mould, we may be able to deal with it by using one or more of the 8 solutions.

☞ With entrenched mould, inside walls for example, we may need to call in experts.

☞ It appears important to take care in choosing a mould remediator.

☞ Bleach or ammonia may make the problem far worse.

☞ Keeping the home below 50% humidity with a dehumidifier is recommended. Less in colder weather.

☞ Ventilation seems to help keep mould from starting.

☞ Prevention appears a lot easier than dealing with it when mould has already started.

Chapter Ten

Closing Thoughts

Action releases fear. When I realized there might be mould in my home, my imagination ran wild. Not knowing what the effects might be long term can be scary. Noticing health effects like tiredness, itchy skin, baggy and droopy feeling eyes and smelling that musty odour can be debilitating.

Asking for help was empowering. Just admitting that I did not know was a first step to finding out.

Receiving help was humbling. That so many friends and acquiantances would take the time to offer their ideas allowed me to feel treasured and yes, loved. People want to help if you ask. First, I had to ask.

I don't have to be an expert. What became clear in the research is that common sense added to basic knowledge can go a long way.

Be open to learning and to change. I remember when I was a radio operator in Tuktoyaktuk on the north coast of Canada, where the 1,000 mile McKenzie River empties into the Arctic Ocean. I had a problem with one of the radios that was not performing up to snuff. My supervisor from Edmonton visited, smiled, pointed to his nose and said sometimes you just have to sniff it out. He looked in the back of the radio, noticed many wires attached to the ground and said it looks like a few too many wires here. Disconnecting a couple of them and the radio's sound cleared right up, like sunshine breaking through the clouds.

You don't always need a pricey expert. The government of Canada site and Mike Holmes and Shell Busey all note that smaller bit of mould can be taken care of by some simple remedies.

The ozone generator Gene lent me did its job and allowed for better sleeps. For a day and a half I have had the diffuser pumping out Thieves Oil in the bathroom and have now moved it to the bedroom. The toilet tank that Maria drew my attention to had black spots and released a pungent odour when the lid was lifted. Vinegar and some elbow grease seems to have done the trick. Will have to ask the next visiting friend to give a sniff around the house and see if they smell anything musty remaining. Living in the smell of mould, it can be too easy to get used to it and not notice it anymore.

Time will also tell. If the symptoms continue improving, that will be confirmation I am on the right track.

The hygrometer is showing between 50% and 60 % moisture. I will first take Ken's suggestion of granules to suck up moisture in the air. It is the cheaper option. If it works, then  no need for a dehumidifier.

Consumer Reports July 2012 edition has reports on the various dehumidifiers that pass muster. Two of them are available in Canada. $250 seems to be the price range.

I am thinking that granules may be a good idea for storage spaces and closets. Also more airing of the house regularly. One suggestion from a Feng Shui point of view (Look it up in your Funk & Wagnalls…er…Google), is to open windows every morning to replace the stagnant "chi" in the house. This would also serve to air out moisture somewhat, depending how close one is to the ocean or a river or lake of course.

If you have other ideas than the ones mentioned in this report, I am open to hearing them and updating. 88matti@gmail.com.

Love and Laughter be with your always.

In Four Easy Steps and Just Minutes a Day, You Too Can Add Ten HEALTHY Years to Your Life.

And when I say “Easy Steps” I mean just that. Four simple-to-do actions that take a few minutes and are PROVEN to add years to your life. These Four Easy Steps are included in the free email course:

108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health.

You can sign up for the course, which includes the video "Feel Authentic Joy…Within Minutes…Even When Unhappy." Click here: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/

This is not about making big changes in your lifestyle, starting heavy duty exercise programs or even making huge changes in diet. Instead these four actions build resiliency. And they build it in four areas of your life. With these four minutes-a-day actions (you can’t even call them exercises because they take so little effort), you will become more physically, mentally, emotionally and socially resilient…GUARANTEED.

More than 1,000 peer reviewed studies show that you can add ten years to your life by boosting four types of resiliency: physical, mental, emotional and social. And ANYONE can do this. As I said, these are ACTIONS, not exercises. They take little physical effort, so even people with physical disabilities can do them.

Get the most results with the least effort: That is the focus of
The 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health. My name is Matti Anttila. I am a health, fitness and longevity Scout. What I do is scout out the most effective pathways for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual growth. I have tested out many dead-ends and shortcuts that DON’T work…so you don’t have to.

You are busy. I know this without having to ask you. It’s a common thing in the modern world. How many times have you started an exercise program and had to give it up because there just wasn’t enough time? Or, have you made a commitment to eat healthier food and found yourself gulping down some fast food? It happens to all of us.

The best intentions sometimes aren’t enough BECAUSE OF THE PRESSURE ON OUR TIME. Wouldn’t it be nice to find actions we can take that get the job done in the shortest possible time? Adding ten years to your life is something you can do in just minutes a day. AND it’s just four of 108 easy-to-do steps that can improve and BALANCE your life. I have tested the 108 steps. Some of them are simple and take only a few moments. Others, quite frankly, take a little more effort. BUT, If I can do them, so can you.

I know what you’re thinking. “108 steps? That sounds overwhelming.” The good news is each step only takes a few moments and they build on each other and compound their benefits as you integrate them into your life.

The Bad News? It takes some discipline.

The Good News? It only takes a LITTLE discipline.

The Great News?  WE FOCUS THAT SMALL AMOUNT OF DISCIPLINE TO BUILD A HABIT. You and I are creatures of habit. Habits run automatically. You could say our habits RUN US.

All we need to do is exert SOME discipline to install a new habit. Once something is a habit, it is easy to keep it going. ESPECIALLY if you are getting great benefits and WANT to keep getting the benefits.

Here’s what you can expect with the
108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health.

☌ The Four Easy Steps to Add Ten Years to Your Life are included in Tips 92 to 95.

☌ A Cancer Prevention Action That is as Simple as Breathing. A two-time Nobel Prize Winner reveals all in Tip # 9.

☌ Eat this food which is scientifically proven to help prevent cancer. Tip # 84.

☌ Five simple actions that can make you happier. Tips 17 to 21.

☌ How being happy right now can make success easier. Tips 65 to 69.

☌ How to buy happiness. Yes, you CAN buy happiness, but not in the way you are probably thinking. Tip # 71.

☌ How many friends is the right number to make you the happiest? See tip # 73.

☌ How to fight off cold and flus without vaccines. Tip # 87.

☌ Get rid of Colds and Flus Faster. A one minute action revealed in tip # 90.

☌ Flush out radioactive isotopes from your body. The nuclear accidents around the world, Fukushima, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, have added to our “background” radiation. Here is one simple daily action to help flush radioactive isotopes from your body (And your family’s). Tip # 85.

☌ Get the love you need. We need many types of love. Here’s how to get them all. Tips 74 to 83.

☌ Feel Good More of the Time. Tip #1 shows how to expand those moments of feeling good into minutes, hours, days, months and even years.

☌ More Energy and Easier Weight Loss by Breaking This Food Addiction. Many of us are addicted to a specific food substance and no, it is not actually white sugar (sucrose). Many who have done this 14 day protocol found more energy and even found their ideal weight without dieting. Tip # 6.

☌ Feel Lighter by "Detoxing" Your Body. “Detoxing” is controversial. Some swear by it. Others pooh-pooh it as hocus-pocus. Read both sides of the argument. What modern medicine says and what the 3,000 year old systems of healing from China, India and Tibet have to say about it. A simple-to-do detox is included. Tip # 23.

☌ Clear up emotions that may be at the root of dis-ease. Emotions are said to be “upstream” from physical ailments. Clear up the emotions and your physical symptoms may just drop away on their own. In the 1800s, Edward Bach made his name by devising Bach Flower Remedies for doing just that. Thousands of years before Bach, the Mayan Indiand of Meso-America had similar solutions for clearing up the emotions. Tip # 24 shows how to do it in literally seconds a day.

☌ "Electromagnetic pollution" is said to be one of the modern day causes of dis-ease. Cell phone towers, “smart” meters and other new technologies are said to increase the load of electromagnetic pollution in our bodies. How you can have all that pass you by instead of passing through your body. Tip # 14.

☌ Your home is a "toxic soup" of modern day chemicals and endocrine disruptors. This can wreak havoc with your hormones. Plastics that mimic estrogen are said to "feminize"men. Modern chemistry has brought us many miracles. Modern chemistry also has us living in a "toxic soup" inside our own homes. I admit these tips CAN take some more work, but the pay-off is a home much safer for you and your family. Tips 27 to 36.

☌ Taking Calcium Supplements can Lead to Brittle Bones and Even to Death! The “Death by Calcium” tip is a mind blower for many. We have been taught to take calcium for osteoporosis. Tip # 26 shows what to do instead.

☌ Model what these "primitive" societies do and you too could find a healthy, long and productive life. In the 1930s an American dentist became so disgusted with the state of children’s’ teeth that he traveled with world searching for solutions, He found 14 so called “primitive” societies with zero cavities. Coincidentally, all those groups had no crime, no police, no jails, no judges. They didn’t need them. They also lived healthy, vital and productive lives right into their 90s and beyond. Tip # 37 lays out their stories and how we can apply the same ideas in today’s modern world.

☌ "Fire Your Dentist." Is it possible? In tips 38 to 54, you will find all the information on how oral health is linked to overall health. Cavities and gum disease are rampant. These tips cover everything from how to cure tooth decay with food to mercury fillings to why not to use fluoride to root canals and many stops in between. These tips alone can change your life and reduce the trips to the dentist.

☌ How Giving Gifts Can Help Heal Dis-ease. Gifit giving has eased symptoms of conditions like Multiple Sclerosis and other immune system diseases. Tip # 29.

☌ Why pampering yourself is critical to success. Tip # 72.

☌ Get Your Mind and Body on the Same Page. Sometimes your mind may say one thing and your body says something else. Tips 58 to 64 deal with mind-body harmony.

☌ How to Make Wiser Decisions. Sometimes we are faced with making a big decision in our lives. Here is a simple way to access our inner wisdom to choose wisely. Tip # 3.

☌ Release the "Number One Killer," Stress, From Your Life. Meditation is one of the great stress relievers. But how do you do it and how do you know you are doing it right? Tip #7 has a simple way to ensure you are on the right path, again in minutes a day.

☌ How to stay young by keeping your brain active. No, it’s not crossword puzzles! Tip # 15 shows you what to do instead.

☌ Learn a Language in Days. Tip # 15 shows how.

☌ Improve Your Memory as You Age. Many fear losing their memories in older age. But, you are actually hardwired to have a BETTER memory in older age. Tip # 22 shows what to do.

☌ Better Sleep. See Tip # 55 for an action plan.

☌ A Fifteen Second "Solution" for All Dis-ease. There is an epidemic of "Silent Inflammation." Silent because you can’t feel it. But many researchers point to this silent inflammation as being at the root of all dis-ease. This fifteen second solution may help prevent the dis-eases of modern life from cancer, diabetes, heart disease on down. Tip # 56 shows you how.

☌ Tap into the wisdom of our elders. Tip #91 shows you what five lessons are the most important from those on their death beds.

P.S. You may be asking, why is this all free? You may not have seen any book, course or program that covers so much territory. Many books, courses and programs charge big bucks for a fraction of what of what is in the 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health.

I ask myself that every day. Why am I giving away a lifetime of study and research? Why have I spent decades going down many dead-ends and chosen NOT to get paid to share the life changing results?

The answer? I don't know. I guess maybe I am just too lazy to package it all into a "sale-sy" type product. I may very well do that. In fact, now that I am thinking about it, I will probably break all this information down into smaller chunks and sell them separately. For now, you can take advantage of my laziness and have it ALL at no cost. But if I were you, I would do it NOW…before I change my mind.

Who Else Wants to Live in Bliss?

If You Want To Create Joy, Energy, Happiness And Bliss Beyond Belief … Even If Nothing's Worked For You In The Past. . .

Give Me One Weekend And I’ll Show You the Easy Steps That Can Transform Your Life Into: Happiness 24/7

I’ll Walk You Through the Easy-To-Apply New Habits That Will Rewire Your Brain for Happiness and Success.

Just imagine what it will be like to wake up every morning and know you hold the "Master Key" to Bliss. You will feel a warm glow in your belly because you've finally found the keys to achieve limitless Bliss, Joy, Energy and Abundance.

And the best part is, once you complete the weekend, you will be firmly in control of your own happiness. And even after you finish the program, all it takes is 22 and a half minutes a day to maintain your Bliss and your “Personal Heaven On Earth.”

You see, this is unlike any program you've ever heard of or bought. Why?

Because Being Happy Is As Easy As “Falling In Love.”

Some of you may remember the Buddy Holly song: “It’s So Easy to Fall in Love.” That’s exactly what I discovered about Joy and Happiness. “It’s So Easy to Fall into Joy.”

My name is Matti Anttila. I’m a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher. At one of our weekly Laughter Yoga classes, we did an exercise where we try to make a person laugh or smile while they did their level best NOT to smile.

One person asked what was the purpose of that exercise? She answered the question herself when she said: “It was painful not to smile.”

And that is the discovery that I made:

Our Normal Way Of Being Is Painful. Not Being Happy Is Actually Painful!

We are taught to be serious, because: “Life is serious, don’t you know. I have to earn a living and I’m stressed out. I have to bear down and work hard and there’s no a time to be frivolous.”

It’s painful to live this way! And when we are in pain, it’s hard to get things done.

The Latest Scientific Research Has Proven Beyond Doubt:

We Can Be More Successful By Being Happy First!

The myth we have been programmed to believe is this: Work hard to achieve your goals and then you can be happy.

The problem with this model for happiness is: IT DOESN’T WORK!! This model is broken.

Scientific research proves:

Those Who Are Happy First, Find It Easier To Achieve Their Goals.

But, how do you get happy with all these problems?

“There’s not enough month at the end of my money. Not enough time to do all the things I have to do…never mind want to do. There is so  much to do at work that I’ll never get it all done.

I’m stressed out and can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. I seem to be on a treadmill: get up, go to work, come home, have dinner, watch some TV, go to bed and start all over again the next day.

Not only that, but the world is full of challenges; Climate change, wars, famine, crime and political strife.

How can I be happy in the face of all that?”

It may seem an impossible task, but also it may seem irresponsible to be happy in a sad and miserable world.

Actually, the opposite is true.

If We Are Happy And Joyful, Then We Radiate Joy And Spread Happiness.

That seems to me like a “Higher Calling” than perpetuating sadness and misery.

The good news is we CAN feel joy, be happy and bathe in a sea of bliss. We CAN            do that and we SHOULD.

The good news also is when we are happy, we are more able to help a sick world. We are better equipped with tools and techniques to get things done…including helping to ease some of the misery in this world.

Why?

You Will Be More Successful By Being In Bliss!!!

The great news is; it’s easier to be in bliss than to be stressed, sad, miserable or depressed.

“The Zen Of Joy: How to Rewire Your Brain For Happiness and Success. Simple and Easy Protocols for Performance, Productivity and Profits.” This is not about more information. “Falling into Bliss” is not about reading more books, attending more self development and spiritual seminars and so on.

What stops you is the information you already have that isn’t working for you. The limiting beliefs about happiness and joy…the rules you have picked up and been conditioned to believe in over a lifetime. These rules about what you need to do and what you need to be in order to feel joy and bliss and happiness.

These rules are not the rules, they are your rules. Unnecessary rules that have nothing to do with being a good person. Rules that many people, happily for them, do not have.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

After this weekend, you could be basking in the warm glow of continuous Bliss, Joy, Happiness, Energy and Feelings of Abundance.

This very letter could have been the defining moment of your life…

Or… you could fall into the sea of people who let yet another life-changing opportunity pass them by…

The choice is yours.

Let me explain…

For decades, I have been researching anything and everything to get to the source of happiness and joy.

It started during my “hippie” days, with “herbs” and other supposedly mind-expanding substances. I stumbled on to Transcendental Meditation, Ashtanga Yoga, Vita-Flex, Kung Fu, Judo, Aikido, Tai Chi, Qigong, Herbology, Nutrition, exercise, energy work, Laughter Yoga and a host of other disciplines.

All of these seemingly diverse practices contributed to the path that led to feeling Bliss most of the time. You will notice I said “most of the time.” This is a path that you and I are on and I get knocked off it occasionally, just like you. But, there is a…

Quick Way To Get Back To The Path, To Balance And To Bliss.

The tools and techniques I have developed for my own use allow me to quickly get back into Bliss whenever I fall off the path.

Now you can now plug into those very same tools and techniques (which I call protocols) without the decades of research that I went through.

These tools allow virtually anyone to:

Instantly Overcome Even the Most Stubborn, Longstanding Negative Beliefs and
Emotions–And Transform Them Into Bliss!

And… what I've discovered… literally… continues to blow my mind, time and time again!

Now, this might not make me the most popular guy for saying this, but I honestly believe that you don't need to go through years and years of…

          -Writing affirmations
          -Thinking "positive"
          -Trying to "get passionate”
          -Endless goal setting
-Assuming that "massive action" will solve everything
          -Working harder…

…just to attract success into your life! You see, most people work very hard and take lots of action, yet never attract the happiness they deserve. In fact, when it comes to happiness (and success), I've found that…

Almost Everyone Attempts to Get Happy The HARD Way!

But here's the good news: There is a much, much easier, more enjoyable, and infinitely more effective way.

In fact, after decades of research, I'm absolutely convinced you can…

Get into Bliss and Happiness Within Minutes…AND be More Successful in ALL Areas of Your Life.

I know. It sounds absolutely insane, doesn't it?

The reason it sounds crazy may well be because we are still operating under a myth that is broken. The myth that says become successful first and then you will have happiness.

But, as the famous author Deepak Chopra is quoted as saying:

“The secret to attraction is to love oneself.”

And listen. If this wasn’t working for me, I'd think it was just a bunch of “New Age Woo Woo Stuff” myself. But the fact is, it works. Once I started practicing this simple set of “energy protocols”…

Incredible Success Started to Flood Into All Areas of My Life!

What stokes me up no end is that others can use these protocols to get the same results.

When you learn this system, you'll:

* Dramatically increase your happiness, your joy, your energy and your Bliss

* Get in touch with your intuition which can give you solutions to many of your “problems”

* Develop an overwhelmingly positive outlook on life

* Find and experience a new way of being that literally changes your world for the better

Rewire Your Brain For Happiness, Joy and Bliss

Imagine if you could reprogram your brain and create an "Automated Happiness GPS" that continually moved you toward your joy, happiness and bliss.

The reason you are not in bliss at this very moment is because your subconscious mind is trying to protect you. You see, it’s those programs that were installed, those beliefs that form your “truth.”

It's not your fault. It's just that part of you is programmed to keep you “safe.”

Most of us use a "Default Operating System." It's the system our parents gave us. And it's the one their parents gave them.

Unfortunately, it's a lie. A faulty system. A glitch in the hard drive. One based on illusion, passed down from generation to generation. And really, it’s an “Automatic Misery GPS!”

What no one told you is that any disruptions that we experience in life are simply disruptions in the energy field. And once you create your "Automatic Happiness GPS"…

You Become 100% "Optimized" For Entering Bliss Beyond Belief!

You literally "flip a switch" that tunes into a "joy frequency"… that just can't be stopped!

Ever Wished You Could Just “Turn Off The World?”

Well, now you can! With these protocols, you are just moments away from bliss at any time, anywhere.

To say you're getting some quality "bang for the buck" doesn't even begin to describe what I'm offering here.

The real value is the astonishing feeling of joy and happiness you'll achieve once you use the system.

Just imagine, most people spend their entire lives in the “pursuit of happiness.” Chasing after money, status, fame, love, houses and cars and NEVER achieve this state of bliss, joy and happiness.

Listen, there are both rich people and poor people who are unhappy. AND there are rich people and poor people who are happy.

The great secret is:

The Happier You Are, The More Joy And Bliss You Feel, The Easier It Is Have The Physical Riches Of The World As Well.

We really have put the cart before the horse.

This is an entirely new way of living, to…

A truly joyful existence!

As you can see, the course itself is priceless. If you had to put a lifetime value on it, it would easily be worth tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What is your cost? First, you will need to invest a weekend. We are talking about changing the habits of a lifetime. You can’t do that in one hour. What you can do in one weekend is familiarize yourself with the simple tools and techniques to insert new and powerful habits in place of habits that may not be serving you anymore.

Your second investment is $397. You will pay more for a flat screen TV. The purchase of a TV will give you a thrill that many think of as happiness. But how long does it last until it becomes “just part of the furniture?”

In fact, our consumer society has us chasing all kinds of things to buy that are supposed to make us happy. How much is the “latte habit” costing you? I don’t buy them so I am guessing they run $4.00. Multiply by 5 days a week and 52 weeks a year and you are spending $1040 a year on something that promises happiness. We know that there is zero nutritional value in a latte, yet we justify it with something like this: “It’s my little treat. I work hard, with my nose to the grindstone and it helps me get through the day.”

Instead, why not create a life that is blissful, joyous and happy. That way, we can throw out our crutches, one by one.

Tell me: How much money can we save each and every year if we did not need to buy “stuff’ to make ourselves feel good?

“Shop till you drop” seems to be the mantra to chase after that good feeling.

How about just turning on the “Joy Key” whenever you want and saving hundreds on each shopping trip? Doesn’t that sound like a better strategy?

Look, there is nothing wrong with having “stuff.” In fact, you deserve to have pleasant surroundings. AND, this is one of the great secrets of the Universe:

It’s Easier To Be Successful And Get The “Stuff” You Want When You’re Happy First!

My personal confession about The Zen of Joy:

It Isn't Just About Feeling Good.

Of course, if you use The Zen of Joy and follow the instructions, you can’t help but feel great.

But ultimately, The Zen of Joy is about…

Clearing Your Blocks To Fully-Empowered Conscious Living

Empowering You To Heal Yourself AND Be A Positive Influence To Those Around You

Spreading the "Automatic Happiness GPS" around the world…and creating a better future for everyone

It's About Releasing Virtually Every Block You Have Toward Prosperous, Conscious Living… And… Changing The World In The Process.

It's about who you are… how you live… what you say… and what actions you take. That's the real power of this system: it translates into all areas of your life.

At this point, you've got to be wondering only one thing…

Will The Zen of Joy work for me?

            -Will I feel bliss?

-Will I be able to relieve stress and anxiety wherever I am?

-Will I be able to get into a “positive state” whatever I am doing?

-Will I increase my energy to deal with the many challenges I face?

-Will I reprogram negative subconscious beliefs?

-Will I actually and really “Lift Money Worries…forever???

-Will I feel more positive about life?

-Will I look forward to facing my problems head on?

-Will I feel a close connection to others and yes, even feel more love?

The answer is a resounding YES!

The only question left is…

Are you ready to finally change your state to one of Bliss? Or will you, like most people, allow your fears and doubts to sabotage your success?

The funny thing is, if you do still have fears, you'll learn how to release them on the course.

It would be a shame, would it not, to not invest in the very system that releases your fears… all because those blocks aren't allowing you to take action right now?

The choice is yours to make…right now.

Book your space at the workshop now.

Just one of the 24 Protocols in The Zen of Joy is laughter.

There are, of course, many ways to plug into this.

Some do it through meditation.

Some run for miles to get the “runner’s high.”

Laughter is a direct route, a shortcut.

Certified Laughter Yoga Leader training was the “key” that opened the lock.

Laughter, giggling and smiling are second nature now.

Instead of reacting to events by tightening my stomach muscles, I am now more likely to giggle, smile and sometimes laugh at those same events.

There is a song title: “When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.”

Well…IT’S TRUE!!!! It happens every day to me.

Imagine having such a strong smile that many people on the street smile back at you.

You can have that too.

That is, if you choose.

Not everyone is ready to let go of entrenched habits. Habits that may cause something less than joy.

Does it really work?

How about this?

Prisoners have to have one of the worst situations. Locked away, told what to do and when to do it every day.

Look what Laughter Yoga is doing for some prisoners…in a Mexican jail:

Laughter Yoga Project in Prisons in Mexico aims to Unleash Happiness

Luis Gomez has a heart for doing Laughter Yoga in the penitentiary system in Mexico City. He has a very large goal of reaching out to every prisoner and to help empower them to tap into their inner happiness. The aim is in alignment with Laughter Yoga International to create World Peace starting with peace within ourselves.

Ideally, by practicing laughter yoga, prisoners will be reminded to make better choices for themselves…

In the Instituto Mexicano de Yoga de la Risa (Mexican Laughter Yoga Institute) we are convinced of the healing powers of this technique that gives the opportunity of empowering other human beings to remember that happiness exists within every single one of us, no matter the conditions in which we are, and from then on, we can establish harmonious relationships with the rest of the people…

In general the inmates are very grateful for all what they’ve got from the meetings. They said that they feel a refresher every time they do it. They feel free. They think that the exercise exercises help them to realize that they can cultivate their internal peace. Also, they are thankful for the opportunity to keep on with the sessions since they truly believe in this project…”   (From LaughterYoga.org)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

If Laughter Yoga can work for prisoners in a Mexican jail to access their inner happiness, it just may work for you.

Caveat: No one can force you to laugh.

You do have to bring your willingness to the table.

But, I guarantee you this:

If you bring willingness and are willing to work and play through the initial discomfort/unease/embarrassment/what-have-you, you too can have a breakthrough and become:

“The New You.”

You can be a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader ready to:

* Help others laugh more and relieve their stress, but also to

* Be a more joyful person with a more positive outlook on life.

Laughter Helps in Cancer Prevention

Laughter Yoga works with the breath to open up to fuller and healthier breathing.

Dr. Otto Warburg, the President of the Institute of Cell Physiology and two times a Nobel Prize winner, says this:

“Deep breathing techniques increase oxygen to the cells and are the most important factors in living a disease-free and energetic life. When the cells get enough oxygen, cancer will not and cannot occur.

In fact, Laughter Yoga was inspired by a response to disease by an enlightened patient.

Founder Dr. Madan Kataria read about Norman Cousins who laughed himself back to health.

Cousins was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a painful form of arthritis.

Many die from this disease. The pain can be so great that sleep can become impossible.

Cousins decided to go out laughing!

So, he brought in Marx Brothers movies into his hospital room and started laughing.

Norman Cousins laughed himself back to health

From Wikipedia:

“Told that he had little chance of surviving, Cousins developed a recovery program incorporating megadoses of Vitamin C, along with a positive attitude, love, faith, hope, and laughter induced by Marx Brothers films.

"I made the joyous discovery that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me at least two hours of pain-free sleep," he reported. "When the pain-killing effect of the laughter wore off, we would switch on the motion picture projector again and not infrequently, it would lead to another pain-free interval."

So, Laughter Yoga reduces pain, and…

Laughter is the # 1 stress buster.

Stress is said to be the number One killer.

Laughter is the number one stress buster!

You too, can have the healing effects of laughter….on a daily basis. Here’s how:

About your instructor:

Matti Anttila CLYT (Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher)is the author of “The Zen of Joy” and “108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health.”

Background:

"Life is a grand adventure or it's nothing." -Helen Keller

Long before I read that quote, I decided not to go a traditional route.

Working hard to age 65, retiring exhausted and then dying shortly thereafter was not an appealing career path.

Thus, I pursued a number of opportunities as they came up: Promoting rock and roll performances, driving taxi, Disc Jockey, radio reporter and talk show host.

I have owned a bakery and restaurant, been a financial planner, baby photographer and most recently a consultant.

My most passionate interest is in health, fitness, longevity and human potential.

It seems many of us humans only realize a small portion of our full potential.

Hence, Laughter Yoga, which can help to free us of many of the blocks to creativity and our potential.

Love, Leaps and Laughter,

Matti

P.S #1: It’s possible that you may have some lingering feeling of guilt about feeling good. That’s understandable when so many suffer. After all, there are wars, famine, environmental degradation and a host of ills we read and hear about daily. However, the latest scientific studies show that we may have our best chance of addressing the challenges of the modern world by first being happy.

For example, Shawn Achor, in his book The Happiness Advantage, quotes studies showing that doctors make 19% fewer errors in diagnosis when they are happy, there is a 31% boost in productivity in workers who are happy, administrative personnel have 19% fewer mistakes when they are happier and salespeople make 37% more sales in a happy state.  So, it turns out your best chance of really making a difference in this world may well be focusing on your own happiness or joy first.

This is not to say that we should become selfish in a way that excludes others. As you will learn in one of the protocols, the process of giving to others is one of the sure-fire ways to quickly increase our own joy.

“After one session of Laughter Yoga I felt grounded, inspired and emotionally at ease. Everyone should take the time to laugh and there are few better ways to do so than with Laughter Yoga.” -Dave Hall. Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan.

“Hahaha! Laughter Yoga is wild energy full of many emotions! I’ve never really experienced yoga to this degree of connectedness with my community. I felt very balanced and happy, my spirits were flying, my soul was at peace, and my belly hurt with happy pains. Thank you for sharing laughs, smiles.” –Navi Bhatti. Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan. P.S. I’m also interested in the leader training.

A mirror can only reflect what is in front of it.

What if?

The world is a mirror and reflects back to you what you put into it?

Every week at Laughter Yoga, we change what we put out into the world.

And every week, the world changes for us.

Big problems become smaller.

Angst turns into smiles.

One of the great “Open Secrets:” This life is about giving…not receiving!

The more we give from the heart, the sweeter this life becomes.

Pains get smaller or vanish.

What if?

You could have that experience EVERY DAY?

What if?

You could help others change their world?

You can…as a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader (CLYL). As a CLYL, you lead others in a laughter session and you get DOUBLE BENEFITS!

Laughter Yoga:

Is efficient exercise (One minute of hearty laughter is equal to 10 minutes of rowing or jogging -Dr. W. Fry, Journal of General Psychology, 1938)

Is the most fun you can have standing up (subjective opinion)

Feels good (as reported by many laughers around the world)

Improves circulation (movement of the diaphragm causes more oxygen to be sent to the cells)

Boosts the immune system (as most exercise does really)

Stimulates digestion and internal organs (although if you’re busting a gut and rolling around on the floor, that’s the last thing you’ll be thinking about)

Helps with pain management (you may still have the pain, but you may be too busy laughing to think about it)

Slows the aging process (if you’re laughing, it means you’re still alive)

Smooths out wrinkles (maybe…I’ve still got mine…but I don’t care!)

Improves breathing (not sure about this one, sometimes it’s hard to catch my breath when I’m laughing so hard)

Makes you beautiful (hey, everyone is beautiful when they smile or laugh)

Makes you rich! (not really, but sometimes we can’t imagine how any rich person could possibly feel better than we do after a laughter session!)

Isn’t that enough already? What, you want it to cure cancer too? Well, as a matter of fact, read this quote from Dr. Otto Warburg, president of the Institute for Cell Physiology, and twice a Nobel Prize winner:

Deep breathing techniques increase oxygen to the cells and are the most important factors in living a disease-free and energetic life. When cells get enough oxygen, cancer will not and cannot occur.” (My italics)

First, you get all the benefits of Laughter Yoga:

Second, you get the benefit of helping others “plug in” to their “Inner Joy.”

And, this is huge…and addictive, I must inform you.

To be in the presence of others who are opening up to:

* Their “Child-like Nature,”

* Their “Inner Laughter,”

* Their “Divine Essence,”

* Their “Automatic Healer” and more…

It is an awesome experience.

Each and every week, I look forward to leading a Laughter Yoga class.

Each and every week, I am blessed to activate my “Inner Healer” as my fellow laughers teach me more about myself…in a gentle and loving and non-competitive way.

Now, You Too Can Have This. As a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader.

P.S. Can Rewiring Your Brain really be this easy? As easy as falling in love? Yes! It really is just easily changing some habits. I did it. So, there is no reason that you can’t too. World’s Happiest Man…Confirmed by Science

Meditation Key To Matthieu Ricard’s Happiness Success

How You Can Get the Same Results…in Only Minutes a Day

First, let’s check out The Daily Mail story:

“Is this the world's happiest man? Brain scans reveal French monk has 'abnormally large capacity' for joy – thanks to meditation.

Brain scans reveal Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard has largest capacity for happiness ever recorded

Meditation 'completely changes your brain and therefore changes what you are', says 66-year-old

He says you can do it too by learning how to let your thoughts drift”

–Daily Mail Newspaper

Neuroscientist Richard Davidson reports that when Ricard meditated on compassion his level of gamma waves, those linked to consciousness, attention, learning and memory, hade never been “reported before in the neuroscience literature.”

Ricard believes meditation can alter the brain and improve people's happiness in the same way that lifting weights puts on muscle.

Here are some of his tips from his book The Art of Meditation published by Atlantic Books: (my bolding)

A healthy mind should act like a mirror – faces can be reflected in a glass but none of them stick. Use the same technique with thoughts – let them pass through your mind but don't dwell.

It's impossible to stop thoughts from coming but focusing on a particular sound or the breath going in and out calms the mind, giving greater clarity. Controlling the mind is not about reducing your freedom, it's about not being a slave to your thoughts. Think of it as directing your mind like a boat rather than drifting.

Be mindful – pay attention to the sensations of your breath going in and out. If you notice your mind wandering simply bring it back to focusing on your breath. This is known as mindfulness. You can apply it to other sensations to bring you into the 'now' rather than dwelling on the past or future. You could focus instead  on heat, cold and sounds that you hear.

Once you've achieved some skill in this you can use that to cultivate qualities such as kindness, or dealing with disturbing emotions. He says everyone has felt all-consuming love but usually it lasts for about 15 seconds, but you can hold on and nurture this vivid feeling by focusing on it in meditation. If you feel it becoming vague you can consciously revive it.

Like when playing the piano, practising the feeling for 20minutes has a far greater impact over time than a few seconds.  Regular practise is also needed like watering a plant.

You can then use meditation to gain some space from negative emotions. Ricard says: 'You can look at your experience like a fire that burns. If you are aware of anger you are not angry you are aware. Being aware of anxiety is not being anxious it is being aware.' By being aware of these emotions you are no longer adding fuel to their fire and they will burn down.

You will see benefits in stress levels and general wellbeing as well as brain changes with regular practise in a month. Those who say they don't have enough time to meditate should look at the benefits: 'If it gives you the resources to deal with everything else during the other 23 hours and 30 minutes, it seems a worthy way of spending 20 minutes,' Ricard says.

If you are not ready to commit to 20 minutes a day of meditation, can you still get some of the same benefits?

Answer: A resounding YES! And in only minutes a day. That’s what The Zen of Joy was designed for. You can learn easy-to-do techniques in one weekend:

BOOKS WORTH READING

The First Billion by Christopher Reich. I used to feel somewhat guilty in reading fiction. A nagging sense of time wasting crept in even though I enjoyed the book. Well, no more since reflecting on this wisdom. When a sick person goes to a shaman, he asks four questions: “When did you stop singing? When did you stop dancing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? And when did you stop enjoying silence?” Here is an engaging thriller.

You just might want to see more of these kinds of stories/anecdotes than the once a month Mastery Newsletter. The “Inner Circle” explores a whole lot more subjects than I can fit into a monthly newsletter.

It is “ad hoc,” meaning it arrives in your inbox whenever I run across something, that could be once every 2 or 3 weeks. It might also be a few times in a single day. As always, simple to unsubscribe if it gets to be too much.
