“Love yourself first and all else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”

 

For years now, I have reflected on this quote from the great comedienne and entrepreneur Lucile Ball.

 

On Monday the car I was driving got sideswiped by another car. No human injuries but “Sparky’s” right side wing mirror was smashed and bodywork has scratches and dents.

 

I seemed to be dealing with it just fine. I did my usual       10-minute laughter session to release any stress. (A process I learned from Laughter Yoga.)

 

But something was still simmering under the surface. It came up at 3 am Wednesday morning. I awoke and could not get back to sleep.

 

Had to get up, do the 10-minutes of laughter I usually do and also my mom’s recipe…warm milk and nutmeg. That most often gets to back to sawing logs again.

 

This time, I went over the event in my head and realized I had been beating myself up for not being attentive enough to get out of the way. Often times we are more connected to deeper feelings and issues when in that state between being awake and sleep.

 

This despite the fact that I have avoided many a fender-bender in the past by being attentive.

 

This one moment of lack of focus was causing me to internally beat myself up…without me realizing it consciously.

 

Amazing, me thinks.

 

Realizing I started to work on forgiving myself. Forgiving myself is the start of self love.

 

We all make mistakes. The challenge is allowing ourselves to be imperfect and still love ourselves.

Having done that, some sort of resolution occurred and I came to be at peace with the event.

 

It happened. I take responsibility for my part in it. I release it and any feelings of animosity that I may have held toward the other driver.
