Pay the Price. Mastery Newsletter February 1, 2017

Whatever we want in life, there is a price.

 

Stuff at the store costs money.

 

Other stuff too.

 

Want a relationship?

 

We need to expend our time (more valuable than money),

our energy and our love.

 

Want success in life?

 

Time, energy and money is the currency. (Love too)

 

Want good health? Longevity?

We need 3 things: F.E.D.

 

Family and friends.

Exercise.

Diet.

 

Family and Friends

Dr. Lissa Rankin (popular TED talker) tells us loneliness is more devastating to our health than either diet or exercise.

 

Having close friends, love in our family and a supportive “tribe” can get us through times of trials and tribulations.

 

Price to pay? We have to invest…Time, Energy and Love.

When a friend needs us, we have to be there.

We have to give what we want to receive.

 

Exercise.

Our bodies are meant to move.

This is a tricky one.

Mostly because of the myths that have grown up around exercise…combined with the prevailing thought that “more is better.”

 

There is a limit to how much exercise is good for us.

 

Too much can wreak havoc on the body.

 

I have great respect for the Olympic athletes, the marathoners and the Iron Man racers.  They can however pay a huge price.

 

Injuries may be the least of those prices.

 

Exercise creates free radicals which age the body.

 

So, the price to pay in this area is…research.

 

We need to find what is the most appropriate type of exercise and the most appropriate amount of exercise.

 

This may be and can be different for each of us.

 

Diet

The same applies for our food intake. (That’s a better name for it than diet…but FED is easier to remember than FEF…ha ha)

 

We need to research what is the most appropriate type of food and the most appropriate amount.

 

Woe betide the person who goes the all too familiar route.

Eating low fat, counting calories, cutting back on meat, even going vegetarian or vegan.

 

These ideas may work for some.

 

You may know someone who went this route and is enthusing about how great they feel.

 

They can be almost evangelical.

 

The price to pay is research.

 

Every one of us is unique as snowflakes.

 

Bottom line?

 

We cannot leave our major life decisions at the hands of the “experts.”

 

We can listen to advice from them. It is wise to do so.

 

In the final analysis, it is I who must make the decision.

 

Only you can pay the price for a healthy, happy, successful life? This is one thing that cannot be delegated.

It Takes Mindfulness to Breathe Slow and Deep. Mastery Newsletter January 25, 2017

Breathing slow and deep also brings on mindfulness.

 

This “mindfulness” thing is popular.

 

It’s just a word.

 

What it means to me is a state of calm and connectedness.

 

A feeling of being connected to others and perhaps all the universe.

 

Breathing slowly and deeply generates that sensation of calm.

 

The good news is we can choose to breathe deeply and slowly…at any time.

 

The trick is to be able to call on that skill even in the most challenging moments.

 

When we get bad news. When we are under attack, physically or verbally. When we are down in the dumps.

 

You can try it now. Breathe deeply in, slowly. Breathe deeply out, slowly. Repeat.

 

Doing it as little as three times if often enough to calm me down. Perhaps it may work for others too.

 

You can practice while walking. Some call that walking meditation. It may slow down the walking. It may make walking more enjoyable. Perhaps even blissful.

 

That’s the ticket…now you’re in gear.

 

If you remember to smile and keep good posture too, well, that’s a bonus.

 

Keep on keepin’ on.

Free Hearing Aids.

 

New or Used depending on situation.

 

The Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre (IDHHC) is working with a Provincial Government program to help those who need a hearing aid. Those who may not be able to get the funds together.

 

Work BC is one program. This is for those who need a hearing aid to get a job or keep a job. New aids in this program.

 

There is also WorkSafe BC. There you have to link hearing loss to work situation. That can be a challenge if it happened decades ago. I am told this can take lots of paperwork and 6-12 months.

 

There is also a third one for seniors on fixed income. These are reconditioned aids.

 

A friend got this and it happened fairly quickly.

She did a great job for my severe hearing loss.

Smiling Takes Courage. Mastery Newsletter January 18, 2017

Especially true when we don’t feel like it.

 

Critically important to smile when we don’t feel like it.

 

Why don’t I feel like it?

 

Something is “up” for me. Some unresolved emotional issue.

 

A great way to begin to resolve issues is from an empowered state.

 

What might that be?

 

How about when we have endorphins and the other “feel good” hormones coursing through our veins?

 

And how can we have that?

 

Laughter works of course. Laughter Yoga sessions (minimum 10 – 15 minutes) work well to put things in perspective.

 

Smiling also releases endorphins.

 

So, whenever there is an issue preventing us from feeling good, try smiling.

 

Put a pencil, pen or even your finger in the mouth. This causes the corners of the mouth to turn up.

 

That is what releases the feel good process.

 

From that empowered state, we may find resolution in a more elegant fashion.

Smile. “When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.” –Popular song.

Hard Work or Joyous Play? Which is life supposed to be? Mastery Newsletter January 3, 2017

On the one hand, we are told to work hard so we can afford to retire and then take it easy.

 

On the other hand, “The Law of Attraction” folks tell us that visualizing and affirmations can give us everything we want.

 

Which is it?

 

Both.

 

However there are “flies in the ointment” with both those strategies.

 

The “work-hard-to-retire” way was created to fit humans into the industrial revolution.

 

How can we get them to work at jobs they don’t like?

 

When factories were first created they had a hard time getting workers. They would go out for beer as many as 16 times a day. (source: Worth Magazine article: “Don’t Retire, There are Better Goals in Life.”)

 

And then the workers would often leave the job not long after signing on.

 

So…the manipulators created this dream of a fulfilling retirement. Even though work may be tough and you may hate it…hang in there, your reward is a life of ease and contentment when you retire.

 

We now know this is a crock. If you are miserable all your life because of the job, it is hard to turn a switch and make life joyous at age 65 (or 55 if drink the “Freedom 55” Cool Aid).

 

So now we have folks believing they are supposed to take it easy after a certain age.

 

What if we are built to work HARDER as we age?

 

What if we are hard wired to contribute and serve to our last breath?

 

Nothing in nature retires. We are part of nature.

 

What if we are meant to use our life of experiences, our acquired knowledge and wisdom, and help others. And help them to our last days?

 

I have adopted this model for my life. This attitude is a truly enriching one.

 

It jazzes me and gives me energy. This attitude of working hard to contribute and serve gives me abundant joy.

 

 

 

But, but…

 

You may know folks who work hard and are not happy.

 

What about just accepting the gifts life has to give?

 

Don’t I believe in “The Power of Now?”

 

Author Eckhart Tolle says he sat on a bench and all was revealed.

 

Did not happen that way for me.

 

Instead I found I have to work hard to stay in the moment.

 

The hard work is releasing. Releasing the blocks to abundance.

 

And therein lies the paradox.

 

It is a easy as can be AND it is the hardest work I have ever done.

 

The discovery?

 

Life is both. Hard work and easy as can be.

 

Smile, breathe deeply and slowly, sit up and pay attention to posture.

 

That’s part of the formula I use.

The news this week, about President Obama ordering 35 Russian staff members to leave the country in retaliation for allegedly hacking emails of DNC leaders, sent my memory reeling back to a conversations I had in 1985 with Yuri Bezmenov, a defector from the Soviet KGB. Yuri’s specialty was propaganda and weaponized journalism. He also was a skilled operative in the diplomatic corps.

 

I learned a lot from Yuri about how governments function at the diplomatic level, but the thing that impressed me most was that political diplomacy is a game played by professionals who follow a strict set of rules. One of those rules is that it is assumed that each diplomat is always lying. Furthermore, one should not take offense at that. It’s merely part of the job, and all the players respect that rule without taking it personally.

 

Yuri explained to me that, during the Cold War, in order to look good to the people or to cover up some corruption that came to light, political leaders on both sides would find it useful to make a big show of expelling from their country a few members of each other’s diplomatic corps. But it was just a game that the professionals understood. In most cases, those who were expelled soon were replaced by others with the same assignments or, in some cases, they quietly returned to their original posts after a short sabbatical.

 

(My recorded interview of Bezmenov is shown above. He does not discuss this specific issue in the interview but goes into great detail on how he hoodwinkied journalists and diplomats who visited the Soviet Union. Fascinating stuff.)

 

All this came to mind when I heard that Obama had given 35 Russian ‘operatives’ 73-hours to leave the country, because they were suspected of having something to do with hacking the emails of DNC leaders. I couldn’t help but wonder how many of them already had plane reservations to Moscow to arrive for a New Year’s celebration with family and friends.

 

Finally, I began to wonder when Russia, China, Germany, the UK, France, and other countries will send American ‘operatives’ home for hacking emails, phone calls, text messages, bank records, and travel records of the leaders of those countries. Of one thing I am certain, if it does happen, no one will take it personally. It’s just part of the game.
