Smiling Takes Courage. Mastery Newsletter January 18, 2017

Especially true when we don’t feel like it.

 

Critically important to smile when we don’t feel like it.

 

Why don’t I feel like it?

 

Something is “up” for me. Some unresolved emotional issue.

 

A great way to begin to resolve issues is from an empowered state.

 

What might that be?

 

How about when we have endorphins and the other “feel good” hormones coursing through our veins?

 

And how can we have that?

 

Laughter works of course. Laughter Yoga sessions (minimum 10 – 15 minutes) work well to put things in perspective.

 

Smiling also releases endorphins.

 

So, whenever there is an issue preventing us from feeling good, try smiling.

 

Put a pencil, pen or even your finger in the mouth. This causes the corners of the mouth to turn up.

 

That is what releases the feel good process.

 

From that empowered state, we may find resolution in a more elegant fashion.

Smile. “When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.” –Popular song.

Hard Work or Joyous Play? Which is life supposed to be? Mastery Newsletter January 3, 2017

On the one hand, we are told to work hard so we can afford to retire and then take it easy.

 

On the other hand, “The Law of Attraction” folks tell us that visualizing and affirmations can give us everything we want.

 

Which is it?

 

Both.

 

However there are “flies in the ointment” with both those strategies.

 

The “work-hard-to-retire” way was created to fit humans into the industrial revolution.

 

How can we get them to work at jobs they don’t like?

 

When factories were first created they had a hard time getting workers. They would go out for beer as many as 16 times a day. (source: Worth Magazine article: “Don’t Retire, There are Better Goals in Life.”)

 

And then the workers would often leave the job not long after signing on.

 

So…the manipulators created this dream of a fulfilling retirement. Even though work may be tough and you may hate it…hang in there, your reward is a life of ease and contentment when you retire.

 

We now know this is a crock. If you are miserable all your life because of the job, it is hard to turn a switch and make life joyous at age 65 (or 55 if drink the “Freedom 55” Cool Aid).

 

So now we have folks believing they are supposed to take it easy after a certain age.

 

What if we are built to work HARDER as we age?

 

What if we are hard wired to contribute and serve to our last breath?

 

Nothing in nature retires. We are part of nature.

 

What if we are meant to use our life of experiences, our acquired knowledge and wisdom, and help others. And help them to our last days?

 

I have adopted this model for my life. This attitude is a truly enriching one.

 

It jazzes me and gives me energy. This attitude of working hard to contribute and serve gives me abundant joy.

 

 

 

But, but…

 

You may know folks who work hard and are not happy.

 

What about just accepting the gifts life has to give?

 

Don’t I believe in “The Power of Now?”

 

Author Eckhart Tolle says he sat on a bench and all was revealed.

 

Did not happen that way for me.

 

Instead I found I have to work hard to stay in the moment.

 

The hard work is releasing. Releasing the blocks to abundance.

 

And therein lies the paradox.

 

It is a easy as can be AND it is the hardest work I have ever done.

 

The discovery?

 

Life is both. Hard work and easy as can be.

 

Smile, breathe deeply and slowly, sit up and pay attention to posture.

 

That’s part of the formula I use.

The news this week, about President Obama ordering 35 Russian staff members to leave the country in retaliation for allegedly hacking emails of DNC leaders, sent my memory reeling back to a conversations I had in 1985 with Yuri Bezmenov, a defector from the Soviet KGB. Yuri’s specialty was propaganda and weaponized journalism. He also was a skilled operative in the diplomatic corps.

 

I learned a lot from Yuri about how governments function at the diplomatic level, but the thing that impressed me most was that political diplomacy is a game played by professionals who follow a strict set of rules. One of those rules is that it is assumed that each diplomat is always lying. Furthermore, one should not take offense at that. It’s merely part of the job, and all the players respect that rule without taking it personally.

 

Yuri explained to me that, during the Cold War, in order to look good to the people or to cover up some corruption that came to light, political leaders on both sides would find it useful to make a big show of expelling from their country a few members of each other’s diplomatic corps. But it was just a game that the professionals understood. In most cases, those who were expelled soon were replaced by others with the same assignments or, in some cases, they quietly returned to their original posts after a short sabbatical.

 

(My recorded interview of Bezmenov is shown above. He does not discuss this specific issue in the interview but goes into great detail on how he hoodwinkied journalists and diplomats who visited the Soviet Union. Fascinating stuff.)

 

All this came to mind when I heard that Obama had given 35 Russian ‘operatives’ 73-hours to leave the country, because they were suspected of having something to do with hacking the emails of DNC leaders. I couldn’t help but wonder how many of them already had plane reservations to Moscow to arrive for a New Year’s celebration with family and friends.

 

Finally, I began to wonder when Russia, China, Germany, the UK, France, and other countries will send American ‘operatives’ home for hacking emails, phone calls, text messages, bank records, and travel records of the leaders of those countries. Of one thing I am certain, if it does happen, no one will take it personally. It’s just part of the game.

Do you get the same as me? A warm tingling throughout your body?

 

Your system is creating endorphins, the feel good hormone.

 

You can have this good feeling any time.

 

Your experiment, should you wish to do so, is to smile at three people today.

 

Just as you walking down the street minding your own  business.

 

Now, the trick is to do it for YOU, not them.

 

Just like a lighthouse shines its light whether there are ships to see it or not, shine your light, your smile, whether others react or not.

 

Try to disconnect any need to receive validation from others. You are smiling for YOU, not them.

 

Some will return your smile. Others may not.

 

It is of no consequence.

 

YOU are benefiting. You create healing endorphins for YOU.

 

Your challenge is to continue to access your smile more and  more…and get the joy that comes with it.

The gift is a song that is designed to reduce anxiety.

 

Musicians teamed up with sound therapists to carefully arrange harmonies, rhythms and bass lines. These slow a listener’s heart rate and blood pressure. They also lowering stress hormones like cortisol.

 

Researchers at Mindlab International in the U.K. tested a number of songs.

 

They found one song that resulted in a striking 65 percent reduction in participants’ overall anxiety.

Toastmasters have loomed large. Gave a Keynote speech from the Professional Speakers Manual.

 

Title: Solutions to all Dis-eases, Adventures in Joy. This is developing my public speaking skills and working toward giving more talks as well as seminars and workshops.

 

Laughter Yoga stuff: I had another Leader training session. I love doing those so much.

 

Looking forward to developing similar weekend workshops in joy. Working title: Joy Master Class. What do you think?

 

UK and Finland in May and June. 5 awesome weeks with family. Hot weather. Saunas. Love all my family. Very special. They are all so gracious in hosting us. A great 70th Birthday celebration with most of the family present. What a blessing.

Health, A Success Basic. Mastery Newsletter December 15, 2016

Goes without saying…or it should.

 

The very definition of success ought to include health.

 

Without health to enjoy the fruits of our labours, what’s the point?

 

If we toil all our lives to gain material success and destroy health in the process, well…

 

Yet, we see it all the time, don’t we?

 

Boomers are starting to notice it. Family and friends with afflictions, ranging from too many flu bouts to heart disease or cancer or diabetes. A host of other conditions too numerous to mention.

 

Doctors and other health practitioners tell us that we do have some measure of control.

 

The usual suspects: diet, exercise, lifestyle habits.

 

These are not disputed any more.

 

Yet, somehow, we miss the mark. What can we do to optimize health?

Time, Energy, Focus

 

We all have the same number of minutes each day.

 

My contention is we all need to devote SOME of those minutes to the study of health and wellbeing.

 

We need to devote some energy and some of our focus on achieving and maintaining health.

 

You can get too carried away with it, like me. J

 

If we worry about our health, that in and of itself can create health problems.

 

There is a middle ground.

 

One the one hand some say: “It’s all up to the universe and the genes my parents passed on to me”

 

Others get obsessed and worry too much.

 

How about just chipping away at the basics?

 

Devoting some time weekly. Daily is better of course, but that can come with time.

 

The “Health Study Pathway” can be great fun.

 

When we learn something positive, put it into use and notice a positive result, then…

 

Then we can get more curious and have fun with it.

 

Life should be fun.

To be successful, we need some basic building blocks.

 

Joy is one such block. Energy is another. (Joy post here: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/2016/11/29/joy-master-class-mastery-newsletter-november-30-2016/ )

 

However you define success, you need energy to achieve it.

 

(One of the best definitions is from Earl Nightingale: “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.”)

 

“Motivational” speakers can pump us up with a lot of energy.

 

Folks like Anthony Robbins can have a crowd jumping up and down, yelling and carrying on (and he does incredible work in my opinion).

 

The real challenge is how to sustain energy through the many challenges we face in life.

 

Challenges such as death of a loved one, losing one’s job, financial setbacks, a health crisis.

 

How can we sustain energy, positive outlook, cheerfulness and motivation through the stickiest patches?

 

Lots of factors are involved. Awareness is one of the keys.

 

Let’s take death of a loved one. One of the hardest.

 

Dr. Madan Kataria is the founder of Laughter Yoga. I had a question for him during my Laughter Yoga Teacher training.

 

When we had Laughter Yoga on Saturday morning, I would feel fantastic, positive and motivated. What a great way to start the weekend.

 

Then on Sunday, I was angry all day. This went on for weeks until it cleared.

 

Dr. Kataria explained that in India when there is a death in the family, everyone expressed their grief. They cried, they wailed. In our western society, we tend not to do that. We hold it in. Where we hold it in is in the diaphragm.

 

Shaking up the diaphragm with laughter for an hour released some of the trapped emotion.

 

 

 

Holding on to grief, or any emotion, takes energy. Why?

 

Because it involves tightening the muscles and keeping them tight.

 

Try this: tense any muscle. The bicep is a good one.

 

Now, keep tensing it forever.

 

That is what we westerners do. Only we are not so aware of it.

 

What happens is the muscle continues to be tense. We turn off our awareness of that tension.

 

We could call this stress. The muscle is tensed or stressed…continuously.

 

It takes a lot of work for the body to be continuously tenses up.

 

This is an energy drag.

 

We have now identified one challenge to having lots of energy.

 

How do we release that tension (stress) in the body?

 

Lots of ways.

 

Laughter worked for me. Meditation works. Exercise can be helpful. Guided relaxations. These are just a few.

Edward Bernays, The Father Of American Propaganda

 

“In short, even though I regarded myself as being a critical thinker when it came to consumer purchases and politics, I have to admit that I have been bamboozled more times than I care to admit…

 

And so have the citizens of other nations been bamboozled, including the “Good Germans” in the Third Reich, whose fascist leaders made evil use of America’s own Edward Bernays and his insights into what he called “The Engineering of Consent” (the title of an essay that he wrote in 1947).

 

In that essay, Bernays defined “engineering consent” as the art of manipulating people. He maintained that “entire populations, which were undisciplined or lacking in intellectual or definite moral principles, were vulnerable to unconscious influence and thus susceptible to wanting things that they do not need. This is achieved by manipulating desires on an unconscious level. The central idea behind the engineering of consent is that the public or people should not be aware of the manipulation taking place.” (From the March 1947 issue of the Annals of the American Academy of poliltical and Social Science.)

 

 

Cunning De-stigmatization Campaigns Were Invented by Bernays

 

Bernays was hired by the American Tobacco Company in their efforts to expand market share for tobacco, by designing what is now called a “de-stigmatization campaign” to make cigarette smoking by women OK. The now infamous publicity stunt involved hiring a group of attractive flapper girls – each smoking a cigarette – to march down Broadway Avenue in New York’s 1929 Easter parade. He labelled the stunt the “Torches of Freedom” march. Bernays’ de-stigmatization propaganda campaign worked like a charm and within 2 or 3 generations, lung cancer has become a leading cause of death in American women. It worked like a charm…..

 

One of Bernays most influential ”accomplishments” occurred in the mid- to late 1940s, when he was hired by ALCOA (the Aluminum Company of America) to orchestrate a public relations campaign to convince the public that it would be good to add ALCOA’s highly toxic by-product (fluoride salts) to the nation’s drinking water supplies under the guise of preventing tooth decay. It was one of Bernays’ most successful campaigns, with some state legislatures passing laws that compelled reluctant municipalities to fluoridate their water with the toxic waste product that had been responsible for poisoned – for decades – the air, soil, water, food, livestock and many other living things surrounding ALCOA’s manufacturing plants. The aluminum industry, with the help of the American Dental Association (who is still in denial about the serious neurotoxicity of their mercury fillings), got rid of their poisonous by-products and made a profit at the same time!

 

Interestingly, a highly paid ($750,000 per year) ALCOA attorney named Oscar Ewing had been appointed by Harry Truman to be head of the US Public Health Service in 1947. Ewing had been in leadership positions in the Democratic National Committee since 1940 and he had twice been a Special Assistant to the U.S. Attorney General.

 

Obedient to the hidden agenda of the powerful aluminum industry, he and Bernays orchestrated a national fluoridation campaign that, over several years, fluoridated some 90 American cities. Opponents to the fluoride program that correctly suspected that there was a (now proven) conspiracy between industry and government were propagandized as “deranged”. Today they would be denigrated as “conspiracy theorists”.

The sociopathic German fascists Adolf Hitler and Josef Goebbels, both of whom skilled serial liars and also anti-Semitic, were big fans of Bernays, who was a Jew.

 

I end this column with a number of quotes about propaganda from some famous fascists who made “good” use of the insights of his writings. My hope is that readers will apply what can be learned from this piece to the propaganda that is happening both politically and commercially in our nation.

Joy is not a frivolous thing. It is not just for evenings and weekends.

Look at Deepak Chopra. He has written 80 books since 1987.

 

That’s insane. It took me 13 months to write my one book The Zen of Joy.

 

How did he do it? He attributes it to his meditation. And what is meditation?

 

It is being in bliss.

 

Chopra says he is productive because he is in bliss.

 

Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage, cites three studies that point the same way.

 

One showed that we are 31% more productive when happy.

 

The second showed salespeople make 37% more sales when happy.

 

And the third showed that doctors made 19% fewer mistakes when happy.

 

So, whatever challenge, problem or project we are working on, would it not behoove us to find a way to be in joy first?

Laughter Yoga as Healer Mastery Newsletter November 24 , 2016

This bug had me dragged out. I did not want to go to Laughter Yoga last night. Just let me crawl under the covers.

But…I am always saying to my fellow laughers: when you really don’t feel like coming to Laughter Yoga, that is when you need really need to get there.

 

So, I got there. I was leading too, so I had to summon up extra energy.

 

Once again, I was delighted to find more energy as the hour unfolded.

 

There is something magical in getting together with like-minded folk and just laughing uproariously for no reason.

 

I am deeply grateful for all who showed up last night (we had ten of us, yay).

 

A good sleep followed. And today I finally have the feeling like I may actually live through this…ha ha.

 

The many, ongoing benefits of Laughter Yoga just continue to show up in my life.

 

On this American Thanksgiving, I give thanks to founder Dr. Madan Kataria and to all who have laughed with me and help me stay on a joy-filled path in life.

Unraveling Childhood Trauma is Key to Good Health. Mastery Newsletter November 16 , 2016

I was maybe four or five years old.

 

It was the first time mom and dad had left me with a neighbour overnight.

 

It was all new and strange to sleep in another house, another bed.

 

I was scared. Reassurances did not help.

So this must be good news. Feeling the same fears and sense of loss and abandonment.

 

A video triggered this last night.

 

A mother threw out her young child because he voted for Trump in a mock election at grade school.

 

She recorded it. Threw the video up online.

 

The poor boy was crying, bawling his eyes out.

 

If this video is true (you never know online), it was a horrible act of emotional abuse.

 

This has nothing to do with Trump.

 

And I do not condemn the mother. Who knows what her childhood was like. What trauma she carries to be that cruel to her child.

 

What this has to do with is my reaction.

 

I had a hard time getting to sleep with the image a distraught boy crying pitifully.

 

That image triggered my memory. Thank goodness I have trauma release protocols.

 

I use laughter, smiling, breathing, the Iceman course, yoga, meditation and cold exposure.

 

Also this motivated me to get back into barefoot tai chi outside on the grass.

 

As a result, I feel more empowered than ever. And motivated to help ease suffering. Mine first. Others next.

The skills we learn at Toastmasters make it possible.

 

On the surface it appears Toastmasters is about public speaking and leadership.

 

It is much more. Concert pianist Albert Frantz is a Toastmaster. He says his musical performances are better because of his Toastmasters skills.

 

Many of us are finding that we improve our lives both at work and at home because of Toastmasters.

This is your invitation to come and experience it.

 

I am giving a talk at our Tuesday, November 29th meeting that I hope you will consider attending.

Liberation from Fear

 

In fear, we operate from the reptilian brain.

 

This is a good thing. Nature set it up this way. It is a defense mechanism.

When in danger, we need to operate instinctively, quickly, without thinking.

 

This is what can save us when faced with a bear or cougar in the woods.

 

The eyes see danger. The nerves send messages to the muscles to either fight or flee. This is a direct transmission from sensory input to muscles.

 

The higher intellectual brain is not involved.

 

This is a perfect system in times of actual, physical danger.

 

The challenge? When we make long term decisions while in fear. Not good. The higher brain is not involved.

 

So…question. How much of the time are we in fear?

 

How much of the time do we make long term decisions that require higher brain function…while in fear?

 

Ask: Am I fearful of what is going on in the world today?

 

“The state of the world is desperate…as usual.” –Tom Robbins in Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.

 

Does it behoove us to remember that we have lived through desperate times before? Maybe lots of desperate times.

 

In the 50s and 60s we had the Cold War, living on edge of a nuclear war at any moment. High anxiety…all the time.

 

Somehow, we muddled through.

 

Do you think we might muddle through the latest “crisis-du-jour?”

 

Herbalist and entrepreneur Yarrow Willard posted this thought:

 

“I believe this is a perfect opportunity for us to express what we are grateful for in our lives rather then get upset about things we cannot change.

 

Why..?

 

Because The person who is most affected by negative thoughts and actions is the person who is having them. Not the person they are directed towards.

 

I am grateful that the sun is shining and that I am still able to breath clean air. I am grateful that there are people who care about future health of our planet and are working to find solutions to our current challenges.”

 

We can choose: Live in fear. Or live in love, joy and happiness.

 

Fear or love. From which state can I make wiser decisions in my personal life?

 

Despite what is going on in the world, I can choose joy.

Intimate Laughter: Building Community Through the Joy of Laughing. Mastery Newsletter October 26, 2016

Seven of us are laying on the floor laughing.

 

Some are holding their sides. We appear to be out of control.

 

And in a sense, we are. We are in the “meditation” stage of a one-hour Laughter Yoga session.

 

This one hour is in itself a part of a two-day weekend Certified Laughter Yoga Leader training.

 

I am privileged to be the teacher. But as in any weekend seminar, all of us are learning.

 

So much joy, ideas, sharing and yes, lots of laughter.

 

The training is to prepare new inductees into the great pleasures of leading Laughter Yoga clubs in laughter sessions.

 

We drill the basics. Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga, asks that we leaders note the 5 principles and show the 4 parts of Laughter Yoga.

 

The great comic Victor Borge is famously quoted as saying “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”

 

Guess what? A few hours into the first day, someone comments how it feels like family in a short time of laughing together. We are living proof of Borge’s contention.

 

Is this an ideal way to build community?

 

Laughter may be the most intimate thing we can do with other humans.

 

Think about it. When you laugh near me, I hear the laughter not only through my ears.

 

Sound vibrations hit my whole body and all my cells vibrate to that joyous sound.

 

That joy is what can create a sense of closeness. It is what can allow us to feel we are family.

Linchpin: How to be Indispensable. Mastery Newsletter October 19, 2016

It’s not rocket science. Do what others are not willing to do. Do more to help others.

 

In your job, whatever it is, find ways to create value for your employer. So much value that you stand out.

 

In your relationships, go overboard. Give of yourself from the heart.

 

If you have a business, give so much value up front for free that you create a tsunami of good feeling toward you.

 

Serial entrepreneur Seth Godin write of this in his book Linchpin. Are You Indispensable?

In bestsellers such as Purple Cow and Tribes, Seth Godin taught readers how to make remarkable products and spread powerful ideas. But this book is about you-your choices, your future, and your potential to make a huge difference in whatever field you choose.

 

There used to be two teams in every workplace: management and labor. Now there’s a third team, the linchpins. These people figure out what to do when there’s no rule book. They delight and challenge their customers and peers. They love their work, pour their best selves into it, and turn each day into a kind of art.

 

Linchpins are the essential building blocks of great organizations. They may not be famous but they’re indispensable. And in today’s world, they get the best jobs and the most freedom.

 

As Godin writes, “Every day I meet people who have so much to give but have been bullied enough or frightened enough to hold it back. Seems to me, we have to recognize that we have been bullied.

 

Godin says when we are, we retreat to our reptilian brain. This is the part of the brain responsible for survival, fight or flight.

 

It is key to find a way to drop the fear and anxiety so that we can move from the reptilian brain to the higher brain and also our hearts.

 

From our hearts, we can feel the connection to others, serve them and become indispensable. Not just in our jobs, our businesses, but also our relationships.

 

Being indispensable creates value for others and builds our self-esteem.

My name is Matti Anttila. I am a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher.

I had financial and family challenges (like many of us do). My anger kept coming to the surface. I don’t imagine I was all that much fun to be around.

After a few weeks of coming to Laughter Yoga sessions, the anger passed.

Dr. Madan Kataria is the founder of Laughter Yoga. I asked him about this anger.

He explained that in India, when there is a death, family members cry and wail and let out the grief. In our western society, we tend to hold it in.

And where we hold it in is the diaphragm. By exercising the diaphragm in Laughter Yoga, those “trapped emotions” released. After a few weeks, no more anger the day after a laughter session.

Not only that, other “avenues to joy” opened up.

 

Got in Touch with Intuition

Not to be taken lightly. Intuition can keep us away from danger at times.

Intuition also can lead us to opportunities.

Intuition can help solve sticky problems. I can’t count the number of times my intuition came to my rescue.  “Elegant solutions to knotty challenges” just bubbled up from some unknown depth within me. This all since my Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher training.

 

More Energy

Yes I still get colds and such. However, at age 69, my energy is nothing short of cool. When I go to visit my friend with MS on Friday nights, I “float” up four flights of stairs. And it is a joy. (There is no joy in elevators.)

Sidebar: “Floating up stairs” is a skill set. I can teach it to you if you want.

 

Relieve Stress

Stress is actually a good thing. The “fight or flight” hormones exist to protect us from danger. They are useful when we need to face up to a challenge or flee from danger.

Stress hormones become our enemy when they are always present. And that is where many of us find ourselves in the modern world.

Laughter Yoga is a safe, effective and fun way to release stress. Laughter actually puts us in the same state as meditation. It’s a delightful way to get into “state” and release the production of cortisol and such.

 

Giving is THE secret

When we give from the heart with no expectation of return, that is when we feel truly blessed.

Helping others is another way of putting it.

There is a deep joy, satisfaction and warmth we feel when we help others. This is where Laughter Yoga Leading comes in.

As a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, you will be able to help others “tune in” to their inner joy.

You will help them “plug in” to a deep well of energy.

In the process, you get more energy and joy. It is a virtuous cycle. The more you give, the more energy you have to give more.

When I started as a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, I recovered my fee in a a few months. Laughter Yoga Clubs are non-profit. They are usually free or by donation. I suggested a donation of $5- $15. (Compare that to Yoga classes which can run up to $20 per session or more).

Further, if you choose to make Laughter Yoga a business, you can create an ongoing income.

I have had numerous paid sessions with businesses and with non-profits. Vancouver Island University once paid me $750 for three sessions in one day.

At any rate, it’s hard to put a dollar value on the increased level of joy and energy, not to mention health.

Laughter is a “Gateway Drug.” Mastery Newsletter October 5, 2016

Just like some drugs are a gateway to other drugs.

Laughter can lead to other things as well.

Laughter led me to explore other “feel good” practices.

These include smiling more, breathing techniques and improving my posture.

With daily joy, I am more productive in my work. I also enjoy it more.

I am more energetic. My health is improving.

I am slowly undoing trauma in my body.

Because of laughter, I wrote a manual of 24 practices I do to build my joy every day. (The Zen of Joy)

Because of laughter, I joined Toastmasters and am improving my public speaking skills.

Because of laughter, I am improving my relationships.

Because of laughter, I discovered how wonderful giving is.

Helping others is a joyous affair. It is one of the great and largely unheralded treasures in life.

I lead seminars now training and certifying Laughter Yoga Leaders.

That is a great joy, seeing others empower themselves with laughter and learning to lead Laughter Yoga sessions.

I write more and share ideas with others on social media and to my list of subscribers.

I am doing the Iceman course by Wim Hof.

Talk about powerful “drugs.” That course at least doubled my energy level almost overnight.

I am meditating daily and studying it more intensely.

In short, doing Laughter Yoga weekly at first and eventually daily, is opening up vast vistas of personal development.

That sounds a little high-falutin’, but there you have it.

It feels like that.

Having just turned age 70, I am more positive, hopeful and inspired than ever in my life.

Looking forward to contributing more and more and reaping the rewards of giving.

One breath to feel joy.

 

“Mindfulness” is getting a lot of traction these days. Just another way of saying “meditation.”

 

Meditation is just about settling the mind. Easier said than done, you may say.

 

One of the secrets is that meditation is joyful. Joyful beyond measure.

 

When we grasp that concept, we will want to do it more and more.

 

But first…

 

Let’s just focus on joy for one moment. A few moments really. Just enough time to take one breath.

 

Do this with me now.

 

Breathe in deeply while putting your attention on that breath.

How to Improve Your Performance by 71%. Mastery Newsletter September 21, 2016

Almost 100 years ago, Elizabeth Hurlock’s students shocked  her with their performance.

 

Hurlock divided her students into two groups. The first group, she told them what they had done wrong on a test. She then advised them how to improve.

 

For the second group, she focused only on what they had done right. She ignored what mistakes they had made. It  was as if the  mistakes did not exist.

 

The first group made a 19% improvement.

 

The question is: how much improvement did the second group make?

 

What would you guess? Double the performance of group one?

 

They made a 71% improvement!

 

That is 3 and a half times better outcome. A full 273% better outcome by focusing on the positive only.

 

Takeaway Lesson?

 

Perhaps I can get a better outcome in life’s tasks and challenges by patting myself on the back for what I did right. Rather than berating myself for what I did wrong?

We are our own toughest critics. In our western culture, we have been taught not only to be critical of our selves, but also to beat ourselves up for our mistakes—big and small. Even though the best of intentions may be behind that teaching, let’s ask ourselves, “When are we at our most productive?”

 

 

 

Is it when someone has yelled at us for a mistake we made? Don’t we retreat into a shell when that happens? Is this an empowered state to be in? Is this feeling state the most conducive to being creative or to being more productive? Or….

 

 

 

Are we more productive when we have been praised? When someone notices what a good job we did and says, “Well done. You did a great job.”  I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts you said we are more likely to be productive when we are praised and feel worthy and really feel we have made a difference. If that is the case, how can we feel that more and more?  Here’s how: Celebrate Our Wins—Big and Small. 

 

 

 

Whenever you have a “win,” whatever it may be, celebrate it. Now, the first thing is recognizing a “win.” A win is whenever we do something right. And guess what?  We do all kinds of things right all the time.  We have been conditioned to gloss over them and just notice our mistakes! We have even been conditioned to downplay our “wins” and feel uncomfortable when someone compliments us. Many of us even pooh-pooh our accomplishments, “Oh, that! That’s nothing.”

 

 

 

As Einstein said, “Everyone is a genius.  But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”  We all, each of us, have unique talents and skills. The tragedy is that we have been taught or conditioned not to value them. My mother had an uncanny ability to draw caricatures of people, which she did in pencil, that were at once humorous and also captured the essence of the individual in unique way. She never showed them outside the immediate family, thought nothing of them and did not even save them. It was a talent that went unheralded, except in later years, I finally saw the talent.  She did not value those drawings nor her ability as anything special. But it was a unique talent.

 

 

 

This double whammy of pooh-poohing our own talents and skills and at the same time keenly looking for and finding our mistakes and faults means we are not living in good feelings or living in “the flow.”  Being “in the flow” is where the magic happens.  Feeling energized by praise for a job well done means we have the momentum to keep going and enjoy the process. Really enjoying what we are doing allows us to be more efficient, more effective and more productive at what we do. So, how do we get into “the flow?”  Celebrate All Wins!

 

 

 

You can start right now. Because you are reading this, you are in the small minority of people who are actually taking action to improve themselves. Most do not. Most want a pill to take or someone else to do it for them.

 

 

 

So celebrate that, right here, right now. Right now make a fist with your right hand (or left if it is the dominant hand).  Reach out and up with your fist, palm side up.  Bring your fist down and back to your side strongly and say, “YES!” out loud.  Do it again, even stronger.  What does this do?  It “anchors” the win, the feeling of accomplishment in your body.  It takes ownership of the accomplishment.

 

 

 

It means you are taking credit for your success.  You are praising yourself and rightfully so!  What else does this do?  By triggering good feelings in the body, it is now easier to move on to the next task at hand in a more positive frame of mind, or “state” of being or feeling in the body.  This helps to ensure you are bringing more of your abilities, skills and, yes, talents to bear on the next item on your list, to your next task, your next challenge.  Also, this gives you a “tool” you can use to power your way through the inevitable challenges you will face in the future.

 

 

 

How? The next time you feel fear and/or anxiety, you can use this action of fist pumping to release the fear and access the “winning state” in your body.  When next you feel fear or anxiety, simply pump your fist and say, “YES!” out loud again.  You will immediately access the previous successful or winning state in your body and be fully empowered to access your abilities, skills and talents on the fear-inducing challenge.

 

 

 

Your mission for this week, should you decide to accept:  Look for things you are doing right. Celebrate them with the fist pump and the “YES!” out loud.  If you are in a public place and it is inappropriate to yell, just do a small pump and say “YES!” silently to yourself.  Do this as much as you can for this week, any chance you get.

Joy and Ease. When Daily Rituals are not Enough. Mastery Newsletter September 14, 2016

We’re on our way back to home port. Three of my dearest friends and I have been on a cruise in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia.

 

I’ve known these guys since the early 60s. Over half a century, for crying out loud.

 

Ken’s 34-foot cabin cruiser has been our home for an extended weekend.  The weather is still perfect. Sunny and warm. So we are on deck.

 

We amuse ourselves with a dictionary of nautical terms. “What is the nautical meaning of ‘Mother Cary’s Kitchen?’”

 

(Don’t ask me. I have already forgotten..ha!)

 

Laughs. Ribbing. Creativity. Even FastEddy is getting into it. The fun is flowing. I feel truly and deeply blessed.

 

I have a deep and restful sleep on Sunday night. Better than for many a moon.

 

The next night, not so much. Is that it? Now back to restlessness at night?

 

Hmm?

 

I do a lot of the latest self-development techniques I know about. Exercise. The Iceman course: deep breathing, yoga type stretches, meditation, cold showers. Afternoon meditation. Laughter Yoga daily. Why is it not enough to produce a deep and restful sleep every night?

 

I have a question about this. Is it the trauma that we experience as kids that hangs around when we are adults?

 

Maybe. Laughing, fun, creativity with old friends seems to release it all.

 

How do I keep it going?

 

Maybe, just maybe it is paying more attention to my intuition.

 

When I got home from work, I felt a little overheated. My thought was to have a shower. The Iceman cold showers always seem to perk me up.

 

Guess what? I didn’t follow up and actually do what my intuition told me.

 

Instead, I got caught up on emails and social media. I did the laundry. Had a bite to eat. Watched a movie.

 

Daily rituals are all fine, dandy and necessary.

 

Maybe going forward I will listen to intuition and then act on that intuition.

 

What do you think? Might that be an answer?

 

I guess I will find out.
