Plastic everywhere. Micro plastics are the worst offenders.

They act as carriers for other toxins (heavy metals, PFAS, phthalates, pesticides).

Linked to inflammation, oxidative stress, cardiovascular risks, reproductive issues, and potential cellular disruption.

Detected in blood, organs, placenta, and brain tissue.

Then we have: Heavy Metals (Especially Lead, Mercury, Arsenic, Cadmium).

Neurotoxicity: kidney damage, cardiovascular effects, cancer risk.

Lead and arsenic are particularly problematic for developmental impacts.

Add to that: PFAS called the Forever Chemicals.

Endocrine disruption, immune suppression, liver effects

Not to mentions increased cancer risk, developmental issues, and fertility problems.

Very hard for the body to eliminate.

Don’t forget: Pesticides and Herbicides (e.g., Glyphosate, Organochlorines, Organophosphates)

Endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, potential cancer links, and contribution to broader health costs.

These pose acute risks in high exposures.

Plus: Phthalates and BPA/BPS: From plastic packaging and can linings.

These are hormone disruptors.

Dioxins and PCBs: Persistent organic pollutants that bioaccumulate in animal fats.

Nitrates/Nitrites and other water contaminants.

Key Insights on Ingestion

Dominant pathways: Diet and water far outweigh most other routes for these substances.

Inhalation contributes but many particles end up being swallowed.

Volume vs. Toxicity: Microplastics win on particle count/mass ingested.

But heavy metals and PFAS often have higher per-unit toxicity and proven bioaccumulation.

Many interact (e.g., plastics carrying metals/PFAS).

Health Context: These contribute to “body burden”

The cumulative load of toxins.

Effects are often subtle.

Chronic (inflammation, hormonal issues, increased disease risk) rather than acute poisoning for average exposures.

Vulnerable groups include children, pregnant people, and high fish consumers.

Reducing exposure is challenging due to ubiquity.

Practical steps include:

  1. Filtering water (for PFAS/microplastics/metals)
  2. Choosing organic/low-mercury foods
  3. Minimizing plastic food contact, and
  4. Reducing processed/takeout foods.

It can feel overwhelming. But…

Overwhelm is an emotion.

Action is the solution to overwhelm.

More to come.
