Climate Change Proponents Are an Emotional Lot

 

But then, so are we all.

 

One of the first things sales people learn in their training is that people make decisions emotionally and then back it up with logic.

 

I am in my seventh decade and I have not seen an exception to this yet. We all do it. That is how humans are hardwired.

 

There are those who believe they are the exceptions. They strongly believe they are coldly logical, much like Dr. Spock in Star Trek.

 

Question: How did they decide on that belief? Was that belief not grounded in emotion? If you challenge them, they may get very emotional defending their belief that they make logical decisions, not emotional ones. Hee hee.

 

When I have a discussion about climate change on Facebook or elsewhere, I notice how strong the climate changers opinions are. They claim the science is settled. They claim there is no debate.

 

Yet, I see lots of debate.

A SPECIAL REPORT on “The Skeptical Environmentalist.” By Matti Anttila

 

The doomsayers have hypnotized us into believing that the world, including the environment is going to hell in a hand-basket.

 

Nothing could be further from the truth.

 

The truth is: everything, including the environment, has been getting better and, in all likelihood, will continue to get better indefinitely.

 

Whew!

 

Now, tell me your reaction to that. Is it shock? Surprise? Disbelief? Anger, perhaps?

 

This information comes from an extremely well documented and landmark work called: “The Skeptical Environmentalist” written by an Associate Professor of Statistics in the Political Science Department at Aarhus University in Denmark by the name of Bjorn Lomborg.

 

Lomborg has started a storm in the environmental movement and will likely be vilified by many of the high priests of this new religion called environmentalism.

 

I, too, used to believe what Lomborg calls “The Litany,” the statements about the environment now taken as fact because they have been so often repeated.

 

Let’s back up. Lomborg was a member of the famous environmental group Greenpeace when he read an interview with the American economist Julian Simon of the University of Maryland.

 

Simon maintained “that much of our traditional knowledge about the environment is quite simply based on preconceptions and poor statistics. Our doomsday conceptions of the environment are not correct. Simon stressed that he only used official statistics, which everyone has access to and can use to check his claims.”

 

This provoked Lomborg who says he was an old left-wing Greenpeace member. With ten of his sharpest students, he undertook to prove Simon wrong.

 

“…it turned out that a surprisingly large amount of his points stood up to scrutiny and conflicted with what we believed ourselves to know. The air in the developed world is becoming less, not more, polluted; people in the developing countries are not starving more, but less, and so on.”

 

“The key idea is that we ought not to let the environmental organizations, business lobbyists or the media be alone in presenting truths and priorities. Rather, we should strive for a careful democratic check on the environmental debate, by knowing the real state of the world—having knowledge of the most important facts and connections in the essential areas of our world. It is my hope that this book will contribute to such an understanding.”

 

So, the conclusion that Lomborg comes to is that the environmental debate has been hijacked by the environmental organizations and resources have been diverted to minimally useful areas and, as a result, many people on the planet are suffering and dying.

 

Unprecedented Human Prosperity

 

In the part of Human Welfare, Lomborg concludes:

 

“We have experienced fantastic progress in all important areas of human activity. We have never lived longer—life expectancy has more than doubled during the past hundred years—and the improvement has been even more pronounced in the developing world. Infant mortality has fallen drastically…we are taller and healthier and get fewer infections…

 

At the same time we have more to eat. The proportion of people starving in the world has fallen from 35 percent in 1970 to 18 percent today and is expected to fall further to 12 percent by the year 2010…

 

Incomes in both the industrialized and developing nations have at the same time tripled over the past 50 years and poverty incidence has decreased. The distribution of wealth between the world’s richest and poorest has decreased slightly and it is likely to reduce dramatically over the century…

 

The number of hours we work has been halved during the last 120 years, and because we live ever longer than we used to, we have more than twice as much leisure time to enjoy.

 

The murder rate has fallen considerably, although this has been offset by the suicide rate. There are also far fewer fatal accidents today than in days gone by.

 

On average, we have become much better educated, and the developing world is catching up with the industrialized world in this respect. The number of people getting a university education in developing countries has almost quintupled. All in all, pretty incredible progress.

 

This is not to say there are no problems. There are…African people have experienced much less growth over the past century than people in most other countries, and AIDS epidemic has engulfed parts of southeast Africa, and because of war and ethnic and political division the outlook is not rosy. But even Africa is better off than it was at the beginning of the twentieth century, with better nutrition, higher incomes and better schooling. Things are not everywhere good, but they are better than they used to be.

 

The world at large, the developing countries in particular and even the troubled areas of Africa have all experienced progress.”

 

Continued Prosperity

 

Lomborg’s conclusion to the question: “Can human prosperity continue?” is a resounding yes!

 

“We are not overexploiting our renewable resources. Worldwatch Institute tells us that food scarcity is likely to be the first indicator of environmental breakdown. However…food will in all likelihood continue to get cheaper and more available, while we will be able to feed still more and more people.

 

The forests have not been eradicated, and since World War II the global forest coverage has been almost constant. Although rainforests are still being cut at 0.5 percent a year and some countries have chosen to use their forest resources unwisely and shortsightedly, about 80 percent of the original rainforest is still intact.

 

Water is a plentiful and renewable resource, though it can be scarce, partly because it has not sooner been treated as a limited and valuable resource…Basically, the problem is a question of better management…

 

Perhaps more surprising, there do not seem to be any serious problems with the non-renewable resources, such as energy and raw materials. In general, we have found so much more of these resources that, despite large increases in consumption, the years of supply still remaining have been increasing and not decreasing, for both energy and raw materials. While non-renewable resources are in principle exhaustible, more than 60 percent of our consumption consists of resources with reserves of 200 years or more. With sufficient energy we will have the opportunity to exploit much lower grade deposits than today, yet again increasing the exhaustion times substantially and in principle towards millions of years.

 

We have many energy resources that can last far into the future. At the same time we have access to renewable energy resources which are getting ever cheaper, and these renewables can potentially supply us with much larger amounts of energy than are used today. We could produce the entire consumption of the world with present day solar technology placed on just 2.6 percent of the Sahara Desert, and we have good reason to expect that these energy sources will be near-profitable or even underbid conventional energy production within the next 50 years.

 

Our consumption of the essential resources such as food, forests, water, raw material and energy seem to have such characteristics that it will leave the coming generations not with fewer options, but rather ever more options. Our future society will probably be able to produce much more food per capita, while not threatening the forest—or perhaps even allowing us to allocate more space and money to reforest the Earth to achieve higher living standards. Our energy consumption is not limited, in either the short run or the long run, when the almost unlimited source of solar energy can be harnessed. The evidence does not seem to point to tight limits on resources such as water and raw materials, and with sufficient energy in the long run both can be available in the necessary amounts. Consequently, there does not seem to be any foundation for the worried pessimism which claims that our society only survives by writing out ever larger checks without coverage.

 

…our society certainly seems to be sustainable.”

 

“Pollution: does it undercut human prosperity?

 

Conclusion: the pollution burden has diminished.

 

“Pollution is not in the process of undermining our well-being. On the contrary, the pollution burden has diminished dramatically in the developed world. As regards air pollution, the improvement has been unequivocal. Human health has benefited phenomenally from reductions in lead and particle concentrations. Contrary to common intuition, London has not been as clean as it is now since 1585.

 

Indoor air pollution, on the other hand, has remained more or less constant, although it much more depends on individual responsibility—most markedly in relation to smoking. Asthma frequency has increased, but this is primarily because we have sealed our homes so effectively and spend much more time indoors; the increase has had nothing to do with air pollution.

 

Air pollution has got worse in the developing world, mainly because of the strong economic growth. However, the developing countries are really just making the same tradeoffs as the developed countries made 100-200 years ago. It turns out that when we look at the problems over time, the environment and economic prosperity are not opposing concepts, but rather complementary entities: without adequate environmental protection, growth is undermined, but environmental protection is unaffordable without growth. It is thus reasonable to expect that as the developing countries of the world achieve higher levels of income, they will—as we in the developed world have done—opt for and be able to afford an ever cleaner environment.

 

On the other hand, numerous serious environmental issues have proven to be unproblematic. Acid rain, which was supposed to have killed the forests in the 1980’s, turned out to have little effect on forest growth, although it did damage to vulnerable lakes. The oceans have not been harmed to any significant degree, and the Gulf War and Exxon Valdez have probably not caused lasting damage.

 

The quality of coastal waters in human terms has definitely increased. However, many coastal and marine areas around the world are getting higher inputs of nutrients, which has contributed to an increase in the frequency of oxygen depletion or hypoxia, detrimental to aquatic organisms. The main part of this problem stems from the ready access to fertilizer which has given us the Green Revolution, the ability to feed the world on much less land, and consequently a dramatic reduction of pressure on forests and other natural habitats. In the view, nutrient overload is the price we let the marine organisms pay for our success in feeding humanity, while maintaining large forest habitats.

 

With sufficient resources we can certainly decrease the oxygen depletion, but the question remains whether this constitutes our wisest use of limited resources. In the Gulf of Mexico, we can diminish hypoxia and save many bottom-dwelling life forms, but at a price tag of more than $2 billion a year. If we want to do good without $2 billion, we might consider that we could save at least 30 million people in the Third World for the same amount.

 

Rivers have generally improved for almost all indicators. We saw the Rhine, the Thames and New York Harbor showing increased oxygen content, supporting a much wider flora and fauna than 20-40 years ago. Finally, the ‘waste disposal crisis’ was a chimera of the 1980’s. Even if waste production continues to increase and the American population doubles over the next hundred years, a single square landfill of less than 18 miles on the side can contain the entire twenty-first-century US waste—just 16 percent of Woodward County, Oklahoma.

 

The pollution load on humans has been declining in the cities (lower air pollution) and from the sea, land and rivers. As one of many indicators, this has caused the decline in the DDT concentrations in human fat and milk…levels have declined at least 60 percent and in some cases even more than 93 percent in total DDT, and the fall has been backed up by many other indicators, among them PCB and HCB. The share of Americans with PCB in their fat fell from 68 percent in 1972 to just 9 percent in 1983…equally, the level of dioxin is falling.”

 

TOMORROWS PROBLEMS

 

Our Chemical Fears: Should we use pesticides?

 

“…the fear of cancer and the fear of estrogenic effects from pesticides are pretty groundless. We have no reason to assume that pesticides affect our hormonal balance to any appreciable degree. At the same time, pesticides contribute astoundingly little to deaths caused by cancer….the studies show us, however, that three daily cups of coffee or one gram of basil a day is more than 60 times as risky as the most toxic pesticide at the current level of intake. This emphasizes that our fear of pesticides causing cancer is quite exaggerated, and that the overall cancer effect of pesticides is negligible…A plausible estimate for the excess annual cancer mortality due to pesticides in the US is probably close to 20 cancer deaths out of 560,000. For comparison about 300 Americans die each year drowning in their bathtub.

 

…a…substantial reduction in pesticide use will incur major costs to society…the US is a rich country and could afford to spend $20-300 billion every year to save upwards of twenty people a year from dying of cancer. This works out to a minimum of $1 billion per saved life…consider whether such an amount could not have been spent better…

 

Astounding as it may seem, the choice is fairly clear.”

 

Biodiversity

 

“The dramatic loss of biodiversity, expressed in the 40,000 species a year, is a dramatic figure, created by models. It is a figure which with monotonous regularity has been repeated everywhere until in the end we all believed it….But it is also a figure which conflicts with both observation and careful modeling.

 

Of course, losing 25-100 percent of all species would be a catastrophe by any standards. However, losing 0.7 percent is not a catastrophe but a problem—one of many that mankind still needs to solve. Facing these facts is important when we have to make tough choices where to do the most good with our limited resources.”

 

Global Warming

 

“The important lesson of the global warming debate is threefold. First, we have to realize what we are arguing about—do we want to handle global warming in the most efficient way or do we want to use global warming as a stepping stone to other political projects. Before we make this clear to ourselves and others, the debate will continue to be muddled…

 

Second, we should not spend vast amounts of money to cut a tiny slice of the global temperature increase when this constitutes a poor use of resources and when we could probably use these funds far more effectively in the developing world…

 

However, if we send the same money directly in the Third World we would be helping present inhabitants in the developing world…the question really boils down to: Do we want to help more well-off inhabitants in the Third World a hundred years from now a little or do we want to help poorer inhabitants in the present Third World more? To give a feeling for the size of the problem—the Kyoto Protocol will likely cost at least $150 billion a year, and possibly much more. UNICEF estimates that just $70-80 billion a year could give all Third World inhabitants access to the basics like health, education, water and sanitation. More important still is the fact that is we could muster such a massive investment in the present-day developing countries this would also give them a much better future position in terms of resources and infrastructure from which to manage a future global warming.

 

Third, we should realize that the cost of global warming will be substantial—about $5 trillion…Partly, this means that we need to invest much more in research and development of solar power, fusion and other likely power sources of the future…

 

Finally, we ought to have a look at the cost of global warming in relation to the total world economy. If we implement Kyoto poorly or engage in more inclusive mitigation like stabilization, the price will easily be 2 percent or more of world GDP per year towards the middle of the century…almost the same amount spent annually on the military globally…Global warming is in this respect still a limited and manageable problem…

 

global warming is not anywhere near the most important problem facing the world. What matters is making the developing countries rich and giving the citizens of developing countries even greater opportunities…

 

If we choose a world focused on economic development within a global setting, the total income will be some $900 trillion. However, should we go down a path focusing on the environment, even if we stay within a global setting, humanity will lose some $107 trillion, or 12 percent of the total, potential income. And should we choose a more regional approach to solving the problems of the twenty-first-century, we would stand to lose $140-274 trillion or even more than a quarter of the potential income. Moreover, the loss will mainly be to the detriment of the developing countries…

 

What this illustrates is that if we want to leave a planet with the most possibilities for our descendants, in both the developing and developed world, it is imperative that we focus primarily on the economy and solving our problems in a global context rather than focusing…on the environment in a regionalized context…

 

Yet, one could be tempted to suggest that we are actually so rich that we can afford both to pay a partial insurance premium against global warming (at 2-4 percent of GDP), and to help the developing world (a further 2 percent), because doing so would only offset growth by about 2-3 years. And that is true. I am still not convinced that there is any point in spending 2-4 percent on a pretty insignificant insurance policy, when we and our descendants could benefit far more from the same investment placed elsewhere. But it is correct that we are actually wealthy enough to do so.”

 

Predicament or progress?

 

Weighing risks.

 

“Prioritizing is made harder by two tendencies which supplement each other. Psychologically we have a tendency to underestimate large risks and to overestimate small ones. At the same time, the media have a tendency to focus on dramatic rather than everyday risks. This is a dangerous cocktail…
the extreme focus on environmental risks means that other and larger risks are routinely ignored…

 

To use a harsh albeit fitting—metaphor, we could say that when we ignore the cost of our environmental decisions on the lesser regulations in other areas, we are in reality committing statistical murder. And the Harvard study gives us an indication that with greater concern for efficiency than with the Litany, we could save 60,000 Americans each year—for free…

 

And if we want to back off from making prioritizations all together, because it seems ‘narrow minded’ or ‘cold,’ this still does not prevent a distribution of resources from taking place…

 

Avoiding prioritization simply means that we abandon the opportunity of doing the best we can. A lack of prioritization, backed up by however many good intentions, can in the final analysis result in the statistically murder of thousands of people…

 

We must take care of the problems, prioritized reasonably, but not worry unduly.

 

We are actually leaving the world a better place than when we got it and this is the really fantastic point about the real state of the world: that mankind’s lot has vastly improved in every significant measurable field and that it is likely to continue to do so.

 

Think about it. When would you prefer to have been born? Many people are still stuck with the Litany and have a mental image of children growing up with a shortage of food and water, and with pollution, acid rain and global warming. But the image is a mixture of our own prejudices and a lack of analysis.

 

Thus, this is the very message of the book: children born today—in both the industrialized world and the developing countries—will live longer and be healthier, they will get more food, a better education, a higher standard of living, more leisure time and far more possibilities—without the global environment being destroyed.

The Power of Persistence

 

(It’s never too late)

 

Harry Bernstein wrote 40 books but destroyed the manuscripts after they were all rejected by publishers.

 

Bernstein was 93 when his wife of 67 years died and started writing to help deal with his grief. He spent 3 years writing his memoir “The Invisible Wall.”

 

He sent the manuscript to many New York publishers, all of whom turned it down. Then he sent it to an editor at Random House in the UK, where it sat in a pile of unsolicited manuscripts for a year before it was read by a stunned publishing director who immediately recognized it as inspired writing.

 

It was published in 2007 when Mr. Bernstein was 98. He would write three more acclaimed books, all of which were published, up until his death at 101.

 

Bernstein called his 90s, “the most productive years of my life.”

Is writing 80 books in about two decades productive enough?

 

That is how many Dr. Deepak Chopra has written up to 2015 according to Wikipedia.

So what? What does that have to do with me?

 

Well, do you believe motivational speaker and author tony Robbins when he says: If you want to find out how to master a skill, find someone who is doing it and model them?

 

If so, “success leaves clues.”

 

Let’s look for the clues in Chopra’s life.

 

First, I read that he spends two hours first thing in the morning meditating and doing his “spiritual stuff.”

 

Maybe that is a clue.

 

Most folks don’t believe that spending 20 minutes twice a day during their already busy lives is going to make them more productive…never mind two hours a day!

 

In fact, most folks probably think that is a waste of time. That’s close to one hour a day I could use in “more productive” activities, they may think.

 

Yet, how many books have most folks written over the last two decades?

 

I wrote one (The Zen of Joy http://zenofjoy.com). It took me thirteen months.

 

Meantime, one of Chopra’s books was written, in its entirety basically, during one airplane flight!

 

What is the difference?

 

Does meditation open you up to a more intuitive way of operating in the world?

 

Does meditation “create more time?”

 

Does meditation put us into partnership with the infinite source of all the universe?

 

Does meditation plug us into all that is and enable us to just channel information and energy?

 

Is that what happened when Chopra wrote a whole book during one airplane flight? That the book downloaded itself into Chopra?

 

(Should he be sharing his royalties with the universe?)

 

Will we ever know these answers?

 

If we meditate, will we find these answers?

 

If we meditate, can we also become as productive as Chopra in our own chosen fields? (Not all of us are authors).

 

In a quest to find answers to these kinds of questions, I am now meditating daily.

 

I guess I will see what happens.

 

At the least, daily meditation is helping to stabilize my energy more and more.

 

If you are intrigued, there are lots of ways to begin meditation.

 

Here is a meditation from The Zen of Joy:

 

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

 

The Ho’Oponopono meditation goes like this.

 

 

 

Sit comfortably. I like to think of a silk strand attached to the top of my head at the back suspending my spine. Visualize the individual vertebrae being like pearls suspended on a string.  Ensure a good posture that allows for relaxation of your muscles as much as possible.  Focus also on relaxing the muscles around the eyes, the mouth, jaw and neck.

 

Take a big breath and sigh it out. I find that a good preparation as it helps to relax the system even more.  You may choose to do protocol #1 to get connected to the Inner Smile.  Now, this is a series of 7 breaths. You may keep your eyes open or closed or, my preference, halfway closed, so I am still aware of my surroundings but not captivated by them.

 

Here is one way of keeping track of the number of breaths. Place your thumb on the end of your index finger for breath one. For breath two, move your thumb to the next finger. For breath three, the ring finger and breath four the pinkie. Start again at the index finger for breath five, six and seven.

 

Each breath consists of four parts.  Breathe in through the nose for a gentle count of 7, hold for a count of 7, breathe out for a count of 7 and hold for a count of 7. That is one breath.  Now the thumb moves to the next knuckle (the inner knuckle of the finger next to the forefinger) for breath #2. Continue until 7 breaths are complete.

 

It helps to have the Inner Smile in place, but is not essential as the Inner Smile can arise on its own during this process.  Your focus is on the breath.  This is an easy and gentle way to discover and or deepen your meditation practice.

 

You don’t have to in any way worry about your thoughts. Just let thoughts do what they do.  As you focus on your breath, you may find the “Witness.” The witness notices the thoughts but is not attached to them.  No need to go looking for the witness or wonder where it is. There is no need to do anything except breathe in the prescribed manner.

 

If you find your mind wandering and lose focus on the breath, be assured that this is normal and absolutely fine. It is important not to kick youself for lack of focus. Just gently bring yourself back to noticing the breath.  It’s as simple as that.

 

The benefits of this meditation are its simplicity and its minimum requirement for any great amount of discipline. It calms your system and does it fairly quickly.  It also takes little time. That is one of the main factors in the Zen of Joy. The protocols all need very little of your day to practice and get the benefits.  Each breath takes me about 20 seconds. Therefore seven of them equals about 140 seconds, or 2 minutes and 20 seconds. Let’s call it 2 and a half minutes. Twice a day is 5 minutes.

  1. Depressions are a demonstrated cause of physical ill health, including deleterious effects on the immune system. Equally striking is that liberation from depression produces an almost automatic boost in the number of disease-fighting immune cells. The best depression blockers are a strong will to live, blazing determination, and a sense of purpose best expressed perhaps by interesting, useful activity. The physician’s role in attending to the psychological needs of patients cannot be overemphasized.

For all Wine Lovers: A Great Wine for under $10.

 

Impossible, you say?

 

This wine is reputed to be the house wine at the only seven star restaurant in the world. It is from Spain. Cook Street Village Voice indicated it was in the $12 range and only at private stores.

 

I went to the BCDLB store and sure enough, they did not have it on the shelves. It is only available by ordering a case of 12.

 

Masia F Tempranillo is the name and it comes in at $9.60 per bottle. Certainly on a par with my favourites: the Argentinian Malbecs that range from $12-15 and beyond.

 

Who knows how long it can stay at that price with the Cdn Dollar having slid from $.95 US to below $.75 now.

“Don’t Deny the Diagnosis. Try to Defy the Verdict.”

 

Author and Researcher Norman Cousins said that. He should know. He defied the odds in 1964 when he was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondilytis. Many died from it as it is so painful that it prevents sleep in numbers of cases.

 

With the cooperation of his doctor, Cousins brought himself back to health. Laughter was only one of the many tools he brought to bear.

 

(Sidenote: Cousins book, Anatomy of an Illness as Experienced by the Patient, was the inspiration for Dr. Madan Kataria to found Laughter Yoga.)

“The human body is far more robust than people have been led to believe. Public education in health matters has tended to make people overestimate their weaknesses and underestimate their strengths. The result is that we are in danger of becoming a nation of weaklings and hypochondriacs.

 

Franz Ingelfinger’s estimate that 85 percent of all illnesses are self-limiting should serve as the cardinal fact in the reeducation of the American people, just as it should dictate a restrained method of treatment, especially with respect to medication.”

  10. It is NOT our DNA, but how our DNA expresses itself.
  11. We can improve our odds…by study.

 

“Job One” for us is to know how we tick. That’s not me saying that. It was Socrates who told us: “Know thyself”

 

The world conspires to take our attention outside of ourselves. We are urged to spend our time, energy and money in studying subjects that can make us money. We are led to activities that “rearrange the furniture” in our lives.

 

What does it profit us to gain material wealth if we lose our health in the process?

 

If you do what everyone else does, are you not likely to get much the same results as everyone else?

 

Let’s see what results “everyone else” is getting.

 

Let’s see the stats on cancer, heart disease and diabetes. The three “Biggies.”

 

Cancer

 

The World Health Organization (WHO) tells us there were 14.1 million new cases of cancer in 2012 worldwide. They forecast that to rise to 22 million in two decades.

 

This is after billions spent in the “fight against cancer.”

 

100 years ago, one person in one hundred had cancer. That is expected to increase to one in three.

 

Like Playing Russian Roulette

 

Imagine a three barrel revolver. Put a bullet in one chamber, spin it and point it at your head.

 

A graphic image but is that not what we do when we do the same as everyone else?

 

If we do the same as everyone else, we will likely get the ________ results. Fill in the blank.

 

 

Heart Disease

 

It is the leading cause of death in the US, accounting for one quarter of all deaths.

 

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) tells us there are 720,000 heart attacks per year. This costs the US health system $108.9 billion a year.

 

In Canada, Statistics Canada says that in 2008, heart disease is responsible for 29% of all deaths, a total of 69,703. That translates to someone dying every 7 minutes.

 

If we do the same as everyone else, we will likely get the ________ results.

 

Diabetes

 

In 2012, 29.1% of Americans had it. A further 8.1% are undiagnosed diabetics. It is the seventh leading cause of death.

 

In Canada 4% of our population had it in the year 2000. By 2008, that had grown to 5%. Are we heading in the right direction?

 

Remember: If we do the same as everyone else, we will likely get the ________ results.

 

Obesity

 

According to the CDC, in the year 2011-2012, the percentage of adults over the age of 20 who had it? 35.1%. The percentage of overweight people is 69.0%.

 

Health Canada says the percentage of overweight or obese people has increased dramatically over the last 25 years.

 

Statistics Canada says that in 2004, 23.1% of Canadians were obese. That’s 5.5 million people out of a total population of 30 million.

 

Those who are obese have a greater risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, gall bladder problems, osteoarthritis, some cancers, depression, lack of self-esteem and sleep apnea. That is according to Health Canada.

 

If we do the same as everyone else, we will likely get the ________ results.

 

 

Are you a “ticking time bomb?”

 

What can you do to get a different result from “everyone else?”

 

By the way, if you believe that there is nothing we can do, that it is all determined by our genes, I have news for you. Author Bruce Lipton destroyed that concept in his work The Biology of Belief.

 

The newly emerging field of psychoneuroimmunology has discovered that it is not what our DNA is, but how it expresses itself! And we have power over that expression.

 

Here’s how. Take Socrates words to heart and undertake the study of yourself. How do you tick? “Know thyself.”

 

Let’s take cancer as an example. Is there a way to reduce your odds from one in three?

Conquering Fear

 

  1. Fear is a natural state designed to protect us from harm
  2. Constant fear creates a state of chronic stress.
  3. Chronic stress shuts down our immune system and digestion.
  4. This ongoing stress can cause health issues, and
  5. Relationship issues.
  6. When in chronic stress, we literally have no choice but to look for negatives and ignore positives in our lives.
  7. Laughter, Smiling, Breathing and Posture help to release stress and bring us back to balance.

 

Fear is a survival mechanism that Nature or the Creator has supplied us with in order to escape or overcome life threatening situations.

 

When we are attacked, fear arises along with a host of hormones designed to give us the best chance of fighting back or running away in order to preserve ourselves from death or injury.

 

In the animal kingdom, when a gazelle runs from the leopard, all of its internal resources are focused on running.

 

When the gazelle escapes, it spends a couple of minutes trembling to release the “fight or flight” hormones and then goes about its business as if nothing had happened.

 

We humans, being so much more advanced and refined, don’t tend to do that. Instead, we hang on to that state of fight or flight.

 

This is what is meant by the term “chronic stress.” The stress hormones, such as cortisol, have a purpose. That purpose is survival.

 

When we do not release stress, our system is in continual fight or flight mode.

 

So what, you may say.

 

Here’s what. All other systems basically shut down. That means our immune system which is tasked with fighting off viruses, bacteria and other invaders, is not able to do its job well. Hence, colds and flus ensue.

 

Our digestion is shut down. There is no need to digest food when we are battling for our lives against a saber tooth tiger.

 

What good is it to eat nourishing food if the digestive process is shut down?

 

Chronic stress also impacts our relationships.

 

When we are in fight or flight mode, we scan the environment for threats to our lives.

 

Do you know any “negative” people? Those who are continually finding fault with others and everything in their lives?

 

Can you appreciate that they have no choice? Indeed, you and I have no choice either.

 

It is nature’s survival mechanism at work. When we perceive threat, as we must when in fight or flight mode, we have no choice but to look for threats (negatives) in our immediate environment.

 

Is it any wonder then that relationships suffer? Two partners who are “stressed out” are instinct driven to look for faults in the other. How does this serve the relationship?

 

So, it is critical to our physical health and our relationship health to release the stress hormones.

 

This is what conquering fear is all about: releasing stress.

 

How?

 

The answer may be different for each of us. Here is what I use and this is an ongoing process.

 

Laughter. A ten to fifteen minute laughter session floods the system with the “feel-good” hormones such as endorphins. Stress hormones are crowded out as they cannot co-exist in the body with endorphins. (This is simplified, but you get the idea.)

 

Smiling. What is called the “Duchesne” smile involves not just the mouth smiling, but also crinkling the edges of the eyes.

 

Breathing. Taking three long, slow, deep breaths and letting them out slowly often will calm the system down.

 

Posture. This is a study in and of itself, but basically, a we adopt a natural erect stance, we tend to open up the lungs, breathe easier and access a more relaxed yet powerful energy within ourselves.

 

There are many other ways. Exercise, meditation, visualization and a host of other systems also help to release stress.

What You Do Right Before Bed Determines How Productive and Focused You’ll Be Tomorrow

I have written and talked a lot about how the right morning routine can set you up for a productive day. The same is true for nighttime rituals. The right activities before you sleep can set you up for success the next day.

I used to have the worst time getting to sleep at night. I knew it was important for my health and productivity, but my mind raced long after the lights went out. I couldn’t seem to turn it off.

As a result, I woke up groggy, grumpy, and ill-prepared for the day. My energy flagged right after lunch, and my afternoons were a grind. I just wasn’t my best self. Maybe you can relate.

Eventually, my doctor suggested Ambien. I knew it wasn’t a good long-term solution, but I was desperate for sleep. What I really needed was an intentional nighttime ritual, but that wouldn’t come for several more years.

Today, I am happy to report that I sleep like a baby—without the help of Ambien or any other drug. I sleep soundly for seven to eight hours each night, wake rested, and have all the energy I need to be creative and productive.

These nine activities make up my nighttime ritual:

  1. Eliminate negative input. I’m a worrier by nature. To ensure I fall sleep easily, I avoid negative news, conversations, and anything else that strands my mind in Worst-Case-Scenario-Ville.
  2. Read something light. I save my serious reading for morning, but I like to let my mind wander through some pages in the evening. Nothing stressful or too involved. A tech magazine is usually perfect.
  3. Optimize the environment. Temperature and light can really affect my sleep patterns. I sleep best when it’s chilly and absolutely dark, so I turn the temp down a bit lower than during the day and make sure the blackout blinds are shut tight.
  4. Take the right supplements. Natural Calm and Kavinace Ultra PM finally allowed me to punch Ambien in the face. They flat work—at least for me. (Your mileage may vary.)
  5. Use essential oils. Several of my daughters are involved in dōTERRA essential oils. I use them topically to help set the stage for optimal relaxation and sleep. Vetiver, frankincense, and lavender are three of my favorites. After my supplements and oils, I’m nearly out.
  6. Listen to soothing music. Gail and I often listen to some mellow music before bed. It works like a cue: When the music begins, it signals my mind and body that it’s time to start getting ready for bed. We especially like the LifeScapes series. Here is our exact playlist from Amazon Digital Music. (This is the only retailer that still appears to carry this music.)
  1. Turn up the white noise. Most of the time I run a fan at night. If I can’t do that because of travel, I use an iPhone app called WhiteNoise. A gentle hum in the background keeps sharp noises at bay and lets me drift asleep and stay that way till morning.
  2. Stick with the same bedtime. One way to ensure I get enough sleep is to get to bed early enough each night. It’s tough because I’m always trying to get more done. But even during our recent launch for Platform University, I was in bed before 10 p.m.
  3. Pray. Once the lights are out, Gail and I lie in bed, hold hands, and pray. We express our gratitude and let go of anything that is weighing us down. It puts us both in a great state of mind for calm, restful sleep.

Without good sleep, I find myself unfocused, fatigued, less creative, less resilient, short-tempered, and unproductive. It’s a losing combination. But I can turn that all around if I faithfully follow my nighttime ritual.

Some of these nine activities may work for you; some of them may not. The important thing is to to see your routine as a work in process. Keep tweaking until you get it right. What gets you the best night’s sleep possible? That’s the question you have to answer.

If you do, you’ll probably discover you’re more rested, creative, energetic, and productive the next day.

Apricot Pits and Vitamin C “Absolutely Forbidden” Together

 

Many of us, myself included, have taken a few apricot pits to help prevent cancer.

G. Edward Griffin’s work WORLD WITHOUT CANCER outlined how Dr. Kanematsu Sugiura at Sloan Kettering Institute found laetrile to inhibit tumor growth.

 

Griffin states that the cause of cancer is a lack of this nutrient. Prevention, therefore, is to ensure we get this nutrient in much the same way as Vitamin C prevents scurvy.

 

This still appears to be valid, but there is a new twist. New to me anyway.

 

This information comes from Victoria, Canada naturopath Dr. Neil McKinney’s work. In his encyclopedic work NATUROPATHIC ONCOLOGY, McKinney states that the Contreras Clinic in Tijuana, Mexico has used Laetrile for years.

 

It helps cancer cases, says McKinney but not noticeably better than orthodox oncology.

 

McKinney: “The historical record on laetrile has been polarized and distorted. I do not know who to believe. What little science there is has been lost in a cloud of propaganda. I have never used Laetrile, out of trepidation over its reported toxicity…However, many cancer patients today self-medicate with 4 to 5 apricot pits daily, and some claim results. This is probably the most toxic form of laetrile, and can trigger muscular weakness, respiratory distress, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and toxaemia. Vitamin C increases cyanide absorption, so the combination of Vitamin C and Laetrile is absolutely forbidden.”

 

Not knowing this, I may have induced cyanide poisoning as I fairly regularly throw in 3 to 4 apricot pits into my smoothie, which often includes citrus fruits, a rich source of Vitamin C.

 

So, be aware. No Vitamin C at times when you are taking apricot pits or even apple seeds or peach pits as well.
