“Most People Do Not Wish To Be Free” – Peace Pilgrim

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Joy, Energy and Health

"THE SIMPLIFICATION OF LIFE is one of the steps to inner peace. A persistent simplification will create an inner and outer well-being that places harmony in one's life. For me this began with a discovery of the meaninglessness of possessions beyond my actual and immediate needs. As soon as I had brought myself down to need level, I began to feel a wonderful harmony in my life between inner and outer well-being, between spiritual and material well-being.

Some people seem to think that my life dedicated to simplicity and service is austere and joyless, but they do not know the freedom of simplicity. I am thankful to God every moment of my life for the great riches that have been showered upon me. My life is full and good but never overcrowded. If life is overcrowded then you are doing more than is required for you to do.

My life had been bogged down; I felt greedy before I took my vow of simplicity: I shall not accept more than I need while others in the world have less than they need.

You may also have come out of a life where you had too many things. When you have simplified your life, I'm sure you will feel as free as I feel. If your motive is one of giving then you will be given whatever you need.

In my life, what I want and what I need are exactly the same. Anything in excess of needs is burdensome to me. You couldn't give me anything I don't need. I am penniless, but have difficulty remaining so. Several of my well meaning, well-to-do friends have offered me large sums of money, which I of course refused.

I talked to one person who thought I was being deprived of some of the "pleasures" of life. But none of the things I do not use or do not do were taken away from me. I just did not include them when I was choosing a harmonious life. I just had no interest whatsoever in them.

I am not a slave to comfort and convenience. I wouldn't be a pilgrim if I were. We can allow false beliefs to govern our lives and be enslaved by them. Most people do not wish to be free. They would prefer to moan and chafe about how impossible it is to give up their various enslavements to possessions, food, drink, smoking, and so forth. It is not that they can't give them up–they don't really want to give them up. " -Peace Pilgrim. Her Life and Work in Her Own Words

How to be More Effective and Efficient with Power Blocks

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

Humans are designed more for spurts than the slogging long haul. Yet, life is a "long haul."

How to reconcile these two factors?

"Multi-tasking" does not work most of the time

Another factor to throw more confusion into the mix: "Multi-tasking" is more or less a misnomer. We can't do it very well. There are obvious exceptions: waiting on hold on the phone is a good one. Waiting is so passive that we might as well be doing something else with the time. But for the most part when we try we end up doing neither task well and often having to do one or both of them again. Time wasted.

Focus on one task at a time and group similar tasks together

Instead, what makes more sense given the way humans are wired is to focus on one task at a time and to group similar tasks together. The challenge is that keeping a laser like focus all through the day is impossible for most of us.

Power Blocks focus the energy

What is possible is for us to keep a sharp focus for a limited period. Here is a suggestion: Break your day up into blocks of 45-50 minutes of focus, followed by a short 10-15 minute break. 55 and 5 minutes can work as well. Experiment to see what works best for you. Some days it might be 50 minutes and some days 55 minutes.

If you get on a roll and feeling the energy moving you along on and you are enjoying the feeling of accomplishment, try jutting two Power Blocks together to make 90 minutes before taking a break. This is all very flexible.

High Energy = Getting more done

The goal is to keep your energy up. Having high energy usually means we are able to accomplish more than low energy. This is a way to energize yourself even on what can at first feel like a low energy day.

Keep track of your time

You may choose to note down your beginning and ending times for the Power Blocks. I am a great believer in accountability. Keeping track of start and stop times goes a long way to making this work. You are being accountable to yourself.

Hydrate, snack

The quick break does not have to be a "coffee" break. As we know coffee can be a quick "pick-me-up" and it can also be a "let-me-down" a short time after. You could choose to drink a glass or two of water at the breaks. This helps to keep the body hydrated. Snacks of nuts and/or fruit can be helpful as well.

My personal experience with this is that it has helped to get me focused and get more done in a shorter amount of time. Knowing that there is a break coming up allows me to keep my "nose to the grindstone" as it were until the break.

Rewards work

The break is kind of a reward and you know what? We humans love rewards. A little reward every hour or so goes a long way. It creates a little burst of positive feeling. There are actually lots of studies now showing that when we are happier, we can accomplish more. Why they needed studies to show that just shows how far off the track we have gone. We all have had times when we were energized, on a roll, getting things done and felt great. The Power Block concept is a way to get on a roll…every day.

Are You Putting “50 Octane Fuel” Into Your Biological “Engine?”

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

How a Warrior Deals with the Flu

I have friends who think I’m crazy. You see, I am a “health nut.” At least, that’s the way many of my friends see me.

F.J. says he can see that I have a passion for it. When I start talking about I get on a roll and can’t seem to stop. Maybe, F.J. says, you will have the last laugh and outlive us all.

When I showed off my cupboard with three shelves full of vitamins and supplements, I was quick to add that those may not be the secret to health and longevity at all. There are lots of examples nowadays of elders who are living vibrant lives in their 90s and even past 100 who don’t take supplements and seem to do just fine.

So, What is Their Secret to a Long and Health Life?

But before we get into that, let’s address the reasons why you may want to consider becoming a student of health.

First, there is this: if you do what everyone else is doing, you will likely get the same kinds of results. What is everyone else doing? Not studying health, for one thing.

And what are they getting? Let’s just look around and see.

Cancer, despite the billions thrown into research, has been and is increasing.

Heart disease, despite the billions thrown into research, is increasing.

Type 2 Diabetes is increasing. This used to be called “adult on set” diabetes because it differed from the Type 1 that a person is born with, usually only occurring in adults and not in children.

Despite the fortune thrown into research, Type 2 diabetes is increasing and has afflicted children as young as eight years old!

So…if you do as everyone else is doing, being in reactive mode to your health, maybe you can expect the same results as everyone else.

What do I mean by “reactive mode?” Well, it means waiting until there is a health condition and then going to the doctor (or naturopath, herbalist, physiotherapist, acupuncturist or other alternative therapist) and asking to get fixed.

We are certainly supported in this reactive mode. In recent decades, for example, we have seen an explosion of the number of TV ads for many different drugs. The drug companies are now targeting the consumer directly.

Ask yourself this: Would they be doing it if it was not working? TV ads are expensive as we hear every year about how many millions it costs for one single Super Bowl ad during the final game of the American Football season.

Would Drug Companies Spend Millions on TV Ads if They Didn't Work?

So if drug companies are spending the millions, they must be getting a return on their investment. In other word, every time an ad for erectile dysfunction appears on TV, a certain number of men troop down to their doctor and ask for that drug or something like it.

TV is a great advertising medium because it tends to work. With the advent of MTV and their quick cuts, attention spans have shortened dramatically in the last decades. Now, with the internet and smart phones and Twitter, we see even more of a shrinkage of attention spans.

So, we are being trained more and more to go for the quick fix. Few are looking for the root cause of any condition. If I have itchy skin, just give me the pill or the salve to solve it.

The problem with attacking symptoms is that we may get relief from the condition for awhile, but if we root out the cause, it can reappear.

Are We Being Loaded Down with Toxins?

My friend, the Master Herbalist Dr. Terry Willard, puts it this way. Our bodies are designed to cleanse themselves of toxins. It’s a natural process that tends to occur at change of season time. And guess what coincides with change of season time? Colds and flus. Colds and flus are the symptoms of the body flushing out toxins. If we take medication to stop the process, that drives the toxins deeper into the cells and they come out again another time, only with more severe symptoms. And what do we do? We take stronger medication to drive the toxins back down into the cells, even deeper this time. According to Terry, eventually the symptoms can get so severe as to create cancer.

Instead of attacking the symptoms of the flu, a natural healing approach is to encourage the flushing out of the toxins. And in fact, natural healing approach would have us be proactive and do a cleanse prior to change of season time so that we don’t have to suffer from the effects of cold and flus as much.

This brings us to the other approach to health: being proactive.

Being proactive to me means the active study of health.

                                          Socrates said: "Know Thyself."

This may be the greatest reason for undertaking a life-long study of health. Instead of being reactive and waiting for the dis-eases, minor and/or major, to show up in our lives, we can choose to be proactive and study how our bodies, minds, emotions and spiritual selves operate and fine tune those operations to minimize health problems.

Yes, yes, I know. I seem obsessed with it. And it is easy to throw up our hands in the air when we hear the conflicting news reports. Vitamin E is good for you. Whoops, latest research shows taking Vitamin is now bad for you. “Oh, what the heck. I give up. How’s a guy supposed to make any sense of it? I’m just going to live my life. Forget all this health stuff.”

Is there any possibility that the “powers-that-be” designed it all so you would do exactly that? (Oh dear, now he’s sounding like a Conspiracy Theorist.)

Are You Putting "50 Octane Fuel" in Your Body?

Let me ask you this? Would you put 50 octane gasoline in your car? “Are you crazy? Everyone knows that would ruin the engine in no time. Why would I do that?”

Well, 50 octane fuel might be half the price. “Yeah, but the savings are not worth it because it will cost me more to replace the engine than I save in gasoline.”

All right then, why would you put 50 octane or more closely 20 octane fuel into your body? Your car engine you can replace, but you only have one body. And while you can get your heart replaced, why do though that if you don’t have to.

My friends sometimes wonder why I bother with organic food. What’s the difference, really?

Here are the reasons.

“The warrior is never available. Never is he standing on the street waiting to be clobbered.” –Robert S. deRopp in The Warrior’s Way

Food is not what it was in our grandparents’ day. Meat and dairy are two food categories I only use in organic form. Both have had hormones and antibiotics added to their feed in recent decades. I don’t want those in my body, thankyouverymuch.

In the 1950s, there were a handful of food additives allowed in food. (“Food additive” is Newspeak for chemicals.) Now, I am told, there are 60,000 different food additives. Dr. Willard estimates that the average North American is taking in 10% of their bodyweight in food additives (read pure chemicals) in their diet annually. Our bodies are not designed to handle that overload of chemicals.

Might this be a reason why there is such an increase in diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes, et al?

                                          The Modern "Minefield"

The modern world has become a minefield. We have numbers of toxins in our homes from air fresheners to flame retardants to shampoos to toothpaste and the list goes on.

Again, the average person hearing all this reacts by mentally throwing up their hands, giving up and saying: “It’s all too much. I am just going to live my life. You have to die of something. I might as well not become a worry-wart. Who’s got time to spend their lives being scared about every doggone little thing they say causes cancer? Get a life!”

The bad news is the average person is right! Worry and fear by themselves will make you life a misery. So worry and fear are no answer to the modern challenges we face.

But neither is sticking your head in the sand, I would contend.

You can be a "Warrior" or a "Victim." Your choice.

I contend that not studying health and following Socrates’ advice to “know thyself” is being a victim.

And studying how we humans operate and not stepping on all the landmines that now exist (that did not in our parents’ and grandparents’ time) is being a warrior.

The good news? I have done much of the study for you. My 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health covers many of the mine fields that exist, how to sidestep those mines. P.S. #1: Socrates said: “Know Thyself.” That instruction is not much different than  the car mechanic being told to know the engine they are working with and what kind of fuel and upkeep it needs. Yet many of us know how to take care of our cars better than we know how to take care of our bodies. The car is replaceable. Our bodies are not. Does it not make sense to learn at least as much about how our bodies operate as we know about the maintenance schedule on our cars. I’ll bet you have a rough idea when your next oil change should be. Do you know when your next “body cleanse” should be?

P.S. #2: A “Warrior” is proactive. While being proactive with your health is no guarantee of perfect health, it can give you an edge in sidestepping some of the worst afflictions the “Victim” is afflicted with. Fewer down days with the flu may just be the least of the benefits. When “Warriors” take responsibility for their own health, they may find fewer dis-eases of all kinds…possibly even helping to sidestep the major afflictions such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

P.S. #3: The “Victim” relies on outside authorities be they doctors, naturopaths or other experts. “Warriors” take advice from outside authorities and also do their own research and work on being proactive. “108 Tips for more Joy, Energy and Health” is a great way to cut through the confusion caused by the modern day “information overload.” You can have this free email course here: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/

How to Release Fear, Anxiety and Frustrations…Instantly

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Joy, Energy and Health

A Specific Technique That Also Normalizes Blood Pressure, Boosts the Immune System, Improves Circulation, Stimulates Digestion, Improves Your Breathing and Fights Cancer.

The comedic commentator Stephen Colbert said I dare anyone to be afraid when they are laughing. It can’t be done. Or words to that effect.

That’s the shortest story possible:

Laughter and fear are mutually exclusive.

If you can find a way to laugh you lose the fears immediately. Laughter also relieves any lingering anxiety and releases frustrations. I don’t mean to say that fears, anxieties and/or frustrations won’t come back. They can and do. And there is a way to address that as well.

The first trick is how to find a way to laugh if you caught in the grip of a paralyzing fear, or anxiety or frustration.

The good news is that it can be done. It is a skill which can be learned. If we have created neural pathways that support these negative emotions, we can also create different pathways that release them.

My skill in releasing these emotions was developed with the help of Laughter Yoga. This is the brainchild of a medical doctor in India, Dr. Madan Kataria. While doing research on the concept that “Laughter is the best medicine,” he decided to start a laughter club for himself and other to self-administer this “best medicine.” It became so successful that there are now over 7,000 Laughter Yoga clubs in over 70 countries around the world.

The idea is super simple. We can laugh for no reason. We can just laugh for its own sake. One easy way to approach it is to think of laughter as exercise and just move our diaphragm up and down faking laughter. You might be surprised to learn that your body does not know the difference between fake laughter and real laughter. You will get the same health benefits either way!

I had a good example last night. I was shaking the water off my partial denture when is slipped from my hand into the sink and broke into two pieces. Aaargh! Now, in the past, losing a tooth has created a great deal of anxiety and an overwhelming cascade of negative emotion. This event started out the same way. I could “see” the pathway to those emotions opening up.

Instead, here is what happened: I immediately remembered to laugh. The laughter released most of the negative emotion and also many of the negative thoughts. It would have been easy to beat myself up and go into some thought loops about what a stupid guy I was and why can’t I be more careful and what an idiot and what is this going to cost me? $1800 is the replacement cost on a denture like that one…and on and on and on…

Instead I could “see” and “feel” all those thoughts come up and just as quickly as they came up, I let them go. I laughed some more at how easy it was to liberate myself from the thought and the associated feelings. I easily fell asleep without any thought “loops” running around and just trusted that the morning would provide solutions and even if the worst happened, it was just money and I would live and I would have my dentures back fairly soon.

After a good night’s sleep, I phoned my denturist, who is a friend, and he said he can fix it in no more than two hours. Whew. At noon, I will drive the one hour to his office and get it done.

Interestingly enough, one of the things on my TO DO LIST is to listen to some hours of a “clearing” program I have purchased. I wondered when I might have time to do it. Now, I have two hours of travel time and two hours of waiting time to dive into those audios. Interesting how the Universe works. Obviously, these clearing audios are important and I am meant to do them. That is why the Universe created time for me to dive into them. 

There are a couple of ways to learn this empowering skill of laughing at so-called misfortunes. “So-called” because we never know what seeds of benefits are contained in any “bad” luck we may experience. The Buddha said if you really understood life, you would throw your head back and laugh uproariously…or words to that effect.

So your mission should you decide to accept: Develop the skill of laughing when something goes awry. It will serve you well by keeping you in a good mood to tackle the many challenges of life more effectively and support your health in many ways also.

One way is to attend Laughter Yoga classes. Here in Victoria, we have 5 different clubs going at the moment: http://victorialaughteryogaclub.wordpress.com/laughter-schedule/

Elsewhere, you can search for a Laughter Yoga club near you.

The second way is to access the 15 minute laughter video on my site and laugh along with me as often as you like. I found that daily laughter develops neural pathways so I can let go of any “negative” reactions to all kinds of events: drivers cutting me off, people yelling at me, anxieties about money (that’s a biggie), even anger at neighbours who wake me up at 1 in the morning. (I admit that one is tougher, but I am working on it.)

Here is my laugher video and you will note it comes with an email course focusing on health tips: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/ You will see it on the right side of the page as the “Authentic Joy” video. Let me know how it goes.

-Matti

P.S. Laughter also benefits your health in many other ways: Normalizes Blood Pressure, Boosts the Immune System, Improves Circulation, Stimulates Digestion, Improves Your Breathing and Fights Cancer.

So, as well as releasing fear, anxiety and frustrations, you get a whole cocktail of good hormones. Here is what Stephen Colbert says about laughter:

“I would say laughter is the best medicine. But it’s more than that. It’s an entire regime of antibiotics and steroids. Laughter brings the swelling down on our national psyche, and then applies an antibiotic cream… Obviously, it’s a challenge to make light of the darkness but, um, it’s better than crying about it.”

How I Saved Over $10,000 in Phone, Cable and Internet

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

Your Savings May Not Be As Much…But Hey, Even Half of That is a Nice Vacation!

We can agree that saving money is a good thing. At the same time, it can be carried to extremes. As author Robert Kiyosaki notes, it is more important to grow our income than reduce expenses. We can only reduce expenses so far, but we can grow income to the moon, if we choose.

So, it is important to keep this in perspective. Nevertheless, hundreds of dollars a year saved for a small amount of time and effort can be worthwhile.

I live in British Columbia, Canada so the companies you deal with may have different names, but the same principles apply. It is a competitive world now in the "connected" world and we can take advantage of that by negotiating a better deal.

I have had my phone with Telus forever, going back to the 70s with a few breaks for travel. So I was and am reluctant to change. Having said that, a friend said if I called them and said I was considering changing my phone over to Shaw, my cable provider, that they may reduce my bill. So I did and the bill went down from $27 a month to $17 a month. (These are all approximate figures and include taxes.)

After one year of that, the bill went up again, so I phoned them and they explained that it was a one year special from the "Loyalty Department." Aah, says I, I do remember that now. Can I please have that special for another year? Oh no sir, that was just one year.

OK, so at this time the Shaw bill for cable and internet had crept up to $92 from somewhere around the $70 range. So I called them and politely asked if there was anything that could be done. Very nice young lady explained about the new world of cable and how I could buy a "digibox" and with just the very basic number of channels, it would come down to $67. I forget how much the digibox charge was to be as I ended up with a free one! Here's how.

Shaw lady upsells me on their phone service. Only $15 a month and if I get it, I will also get a free digibox. Great, says I, sign me up. I then phone Telus back and explain this offer. They quickly connect me to their "Loyalty Department" who are now more than willing to reduce my monthly bill to $17. Ok, that sounds fine. So I stay with Telus and cancel the Shaw phone.

Savings so far (All approximate and including taxes) $25 a month on cable and $10 a month on the phone. Plus the digibox is free. Maybe $50-70 one time saving.

You might be thinking: Yes, but you now have fewer TV channels. Au contraire, mes amis.

The old analog signals are still being pumped through but the digibox does not pick them up. So…I looked up in Used Victoria online and notice many folks just giving away 27inch TVs as they are upgrading to flat screen. So I picked one up. I now have the analog signal on one TV and the digital signal on another one. So no loss of channels. No big deal really. Most of my TV watching is from DVDs I loan out from the library for free…another saving by the way. If you can stand to wait for the movies, almost all the popular ones come to the library when they are released on DVD. Free. Depending on how many movies you watch, that can translate into over a $100 or more in a year.

But wait, there's more. 🙂

Many folks call long distance these days. I call to Finland and the UK a lot and some US and Canada. Telus has long distance packages, but they are all more expensive than what is available elsewhere. My long distance carrier is Yak and their per minute charges are less across the board. But I hardly ever use them!

Skype to Skype calling is free. And Skype also has Skype to landline rates that are cheaper yet than Yak. The challenge is that calls to European cell phones are outrageous. Yak charges 35 cents a minute to Finland and 29 cents to the UK. Skype is a little better at 20.8 cents and 25.9 cents respectively.

BUT…Google voice is more realistic. You may know that a gmail account is free. When you have one, you can download a free app called Google Voice that then provides a dialpad inside gmail.

Google voice to European landlines is competitive, but their calls to cell phones are only 10 cents a minute instead of 20.8 to 35 cents.

AND

Google voice calls to US and Canada are FREE.

Ok, so now you can throw away all those long distance plans and depending how many calls you make, save a few dollars a month to maybe as much as $20 -$30 a month.

There's a postcript of even more savings. I am loving this now.

My Telus bill comes in during the summer and it has increased from $17. So I phone them and they explain that all customers have had their bill raised during one of those periodic increases they have been granted by the authorities.

But, but but, I protest. I have a one year deal for a reduced rate. ….sputter, sputter. Let me put you through to the "Loyalty Department." Very nice young lady tells me that I have been a good customer for a very long time so she can restart a one year special deal for me again. The only hitch is they only can bill in $10 increments, so would it be alright if she made it $10 a month for me ($12 with taxes). I graciously accept.

I expect that at the end of that one year, I will once again spend a few minutes to renegotiate all this.

Hey listen. It's called capitalism. They are actually competing somewhat, so we are allowed to negotiate. Just takes a few moments.

Have fun with this.

My savings?

$15 a month on the phone bill

$25 a month on the cable/internet.

Long distance savings are probably about $20 a month.

(and I save $30 a month by not having a cell phone. That may not be realistic for some.)

$60 a month is $720 a year. Over a decade, that is $7200 for very little time and effort expended.

If you ditch your cell phone too (you probably won't miss it), add another $3600 over a decade.

I just saved you over $10,000. You're welcome. 🙂

The War of Art. Revitalize Your Life. Meet Resistance Head On.

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Mastery Newsletter

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. Book Review

The author tells us that we are not truly happy unless we are doing what we are meant to do.

And what stops us is Resistance with a capital “R.”

“Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.”

Resistance is invisible. It comes from within us. It is insidious. It is Universal. It never sleeps. It plays for keeps. It is fueled by fear.

Procrastination is the Most Common Manifestation of Resistance.

The answer to procrastination is to start now, in this moment, to do our work.

Resistance shows up in trouble. It is easy for us to get into trouble….of all sorts. Trouble can show up as illness, addictions, being accident prone, screwing up, chronic lateness, cruelty to others. In fact, anything that calls attention to ourselves is a form of Resistance showing up in the guise of trouble.

Being a “Drama Queen” or being a victim are also Resistance showing up.

Resistance Feels Like Unhappiness.

Left unattended, unhappiness can build to become unendurable. We seek escape through dope, alcohol, tobacco, sex, drugs and rock and roll. Depression, aggression, dysfunction. These are not inevitable parts of life. They are Resistance manifesting in many different disguises.

Pressfield says that freedom is not easy. He points to what Socrates said: “…the truly free individual is free only to the extent of his own self-mastery. While those who will not govern themselves are condemned to find masters to govern over them.”

Fear is a Good Thing

Pressfield also says that fear is a good thing. “The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it.”

Wanting to be a star is a sure sign of Resistance. “The professional concentrates on the work and allows rewards to come or not come, whatever they like.”

Combat Resistance by Turning Pro.

A professional works. A professional commits. Full-time. A professional dedicates his life to his work.

Being a professional is not for sissies. Pressfield says a critical part of being pro is learning how to love being miserable. (!)

A pro works at his craft…every day…even and especially when he doesn’t feel like it. A pro is a craftsman, not a prima donna.

A pro loves what he does, but also knows how to keep a sense of distance or proportion. Not being addicted to an outcome, but committed to work, to mastering technique.

A pro does not take failure personally. He knows things change…every day. He endures.

Beyond Resistance: The Higher Realm.

The opposite of Resistance is “…those invisible psychic forces that support and sustain us in our journey toward ourselves.”

Pressfield calls these forces our muses and angels.

Goethe said: “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, magic, and power in it. Begin it now.”

Our angels want to help us. But they can only do so if we are helping ourselves by doing our work.

Pressfield talks about how cancers go into remission when people start on what they were meant to do. “Is it possible…that the disease itself evolved as a consequence of actions taken (or not taken) in our lives? Could our unlived lives have exacted their vengeance upon us in the form of cancer? And if they did, can we cure ourselves, now, by living these lives out?”

So, could it be that life keeps pushing us into living the life we were meant to live, not just for the sake of our own fulfillment and health, but also for the greater good, for the contribution we can make?

Pressfield: “Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It’s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don’t cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you’ve got.”

The War of Art is a short work. In can be a quick read. It is not necessarily a comfortable read as it throws light in areas we may have preferred to keep dark. It is a powerful work. Recommended.

Are You Hurting The Planet And Shaming The Angels?

“The Artists Life

Are you a born writer? Were you put on this earth to be a painter, a scientist, an apostle of peace? In the end the question can only be answered by action.

Do it or don’t do it.

It may help to think of it this way. If you were meant to cure cancer or write a symphony or crack cold fusion and you don’t do it, you not only hurt yourself, even destroy yourself. You hurt your children. You hurt me. You hurt the planet.

You shame the angels who watch over you and you spite the Almighty, who created you and only you with your unique gifts, for the whole purpose of nudging the human race one millimeter farther along its path back to God.

Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It’s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don’t cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you got.”

–Steven Pressfield in The War of Art. Pressfield is also the author of The Legend of Bagger Vance.

Commentary: Pressfield says that when you do not do what you were meant to do, you hurt yourself and even destroy yourself.

There are countless examples now of people with dis-eases who have healed when they got into action and starting doing things.

Who cares if the first things you do are not precisely what your “mission” is on the planet.

You can spend a lifetime navel-gazing trying to figure out what you were “meant to do.”

Just get into action. Do something. Follow your intuition. Try something. Listen to the feedback, i.e. what does it feel like? What is your gut telling you?

As long as you are serving with good intention and open heart, it is unlikely you will damage anyone, AND

It is likely that you will feel better having been of service.

Putting our focus on helping others helps us to heal whatever “dis-eases” we may be fomenting.

There is a saying: “If you feel down, go make someone else happy.”

This year, instead of making “New Year’s Resolutions,” why not ways to “stop hurting the planet and shaming the angels.” We can do that by taking action, listening to our intuition and continuing to move forward on our “mission.”

Here is a solid idea to implement. Buy a $50 voice recorder. Carry it with you. Whenever an idea comes up, record it right away so you won’t forget. Have it by your bedside so as you drift off to sleep and wake up from sleep and those ideas bubble up from your inner self, you can capture them.

Then, implement them! Intuition strengthens when you actually use the ideas. Conversely, intuition stops giving you ideas if you never use them.

You were having trouble making New Year’s resolutions? There you go. A concrete action plan to improve your life in 2013.

You’re welcome.:)

Security in Old Age: Why Your Parents’ Strategies Won’t Work and What to do About it.

As we learned from our series of tips on The Retirement Myth, the Baby Boomers are too many in number and they (we) are living too long. They (we) are taking too good a care of themselves. They (we) are expecting pensions in increasing numbers. The following generation does not have enough numbers to support them.

So, what will pensions providers do? The main pension provider, the government, can easily just create more currency.

By the law of supply and demand, the more of a commodity you have, the less value it has.

Our parents did not all actually have a strategy. They were born into a time that allowed them work, buy a house, pay it off and live off a government and/or private pension.

If we do the same, can we expect the same result?

In a word, no.

We live in a most unusual time, unique in history.

Two principles that will serve you well during this time:

“Who does not learn the lessons of history is doomed to repeat the mistakes of history,” and

“The Warrior is never available. Never is he standing on the street waiting to be clobbered.” –Robert S. deRopp in The Warrior’s Way

Opportunity Knocking…Are You Going To Answer?

“This is the biggest investment opportunity in history.” -Robert Kiyosaki, author of the Rich Dad, Poor Dad series.

This is the largest transfer of wealth ever and those who have knowledge have an unfair advantage. –Paraphrasing from Kiyosaki and his investment advisor, Michael Maloney.

In past wealth transfers, the banks and the wealthy have made out like bandits. This time, the individual investor can become very wealthy if he or she is armed with knowledge and takes action. –Again paraphrasing from Kiyosaki and Maloney.

In a way, this is nothing new.

Investment and economic cycles have been ongoing for millennia. Some call these booms and busts.

We have had countries bury themselves in debt before. In fact, Maloney says this has happened 30 times in the last 100 years to different countries. Examples are Germany in the 1920s, Brazil, Argentina in the 80s and 90s, Russia in 1984 and Zimbabwe in 2009.

It even happened twice to the U.S. Both were war times: the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.

What is different is that, this time, it is happening to all countries in the world simultaneously.

This Has Never Happened Before

“Who does not learn the lessons of history is doomed to repeat the mistakes of history.”

So, a little history is in order.

Note: Please keep this in mind:  This is definitely not about fear! It is about recognizing an opportunity.

The Difference Between Money And Currency

Currency is a medium of exchange. Think paper money.

Money meantime has value in and of itself. Think gold as an example.

Money can always be used as currency to buy goods and services. Currency only has value as long as we agree that it does.

“If you have a hard time grasping this, just think about a hundred-dollar bill. Do you think the paper is worth $100?

The answer is, of course, no. That paper simply represents value that is stored somewhere else – or at least used to before our money became currency…In short, our government has the ability to, and has been, creating money at will without anything to back it up.” -Michael Maloney in “Guide to Investing in Gold and Silver.”

If you or I were to create money out of thin air, that would be counterfeiting and would be illegal. When the government does it, it’s perfectly legal…because they say it is.

The Law of Supply and Demand Has Not  Been Repealed

As you know, the law of supply and demand states whenever there is more of something it has less value.

(And also when there is less of something, it has more value.)

It is not news to you that the US government has been creating money like crazy. They call it “Quantitative Easing” or QE.

They have had two of these QEs in the last couple of years since the crisis of 2008.

Each time they created $600 Billion out of thin air to prevent the economy from collapsing.

Fiat Currency

A “fiat” is an order by someone who has the power to enforce it.

When governments create currency out of thin air and circulate it without anything of value backing it up. Gold used to back up the US dollar until August of 1971 when then president Richard Nixon took the dollar off the gold standard.

That event was momentous and changed forever how the world works.

That event has been affecting all of us since…as you will see.

It also created opportunity. This opportunity is, not once in a lifetime, but the biggest opportunity in the history of the world.

What Nixon did was take the entire world off the gold standard. All the currencies of all countries of the world came off the gold standard in one fell swoop.

Why?

Another History Lesson: Creating “Money” Out Of Thin Air

The Bretton-Woods Agreement of 1944 pegged all the major currencies of the world against the US dollar. Governments agreed not to let their currencies fluctuate very much against the US dollar. And as the US dollar was partially backed by gold, that meant other major currencies were as well.

Now, with one stroke of the pen, all the world’s currencies became fiat currencies, backed only by thin air. Governments have their own way of describing things though.

They call this thin air: “The good faith and credit of the United States.”

So, What’s The Big Deal?

Well, as the Austrian economic school tells us, there has never, ever in history been a fiat currency that has survived.

Eventually, All Fiat Currencies Collapse

Only this time, it is different.

In all previous events, there has been a place to go for safety.

If you were in Germany in the 1920s, you could have transferred your assets to the US dollar and found an island of safety.

Same thing in Brazil and Argentina, if you were able to get your money out in time.

I have a vivid memory of the Russian ruble collapse of the 90s. There was a picture in the newspaper of an old babuschka, an old woman in the streets of Moscow in the middle of winter trying to sell a winter coat to raise enough money to buy food for that night’s dinner. Hyper-inflation had taken hold and her pension of a few hundred rubles a month was not keeping up.

When I visited St. Petersburg, then Leningrad, in 1982, the ruble was valued at one ruble to one US dollar. The old babuschka may have been receiving a few hundred rubles a month in state pension, enough to get by in the 80s.

But when the ruble devalued and you needed a few thousand rubles to buy one US dollar, prices for food and necessities went through the roof. Now, a few hundred rubles bought you nothing. You needed thousands to buy anything.

Think of hyper-inflation as inflation on steroids.

Now, remember, this is not about fear.

This Is About Recognizing Opportunity

If history is a guide, then all currencies can see that kind of meltdown and pension incomes will be devastated. But, the opportunity is also large.

Inflation

What is it? Most folks think of inflation as rising prices for goods and services.

And it is true that prices rise with inflation, but…

Inflation Actually A Tax!

What?

Remember the Law of Supply and Demand?

When the government creates more currency and puts it out into the market place, that means all the existing currency is devalued.

However, when the government created it and spent it, they got to spend it at full value. Only after it hits the street does this extra currency cause a devaluing of the currency.

So, the government just taxed you and I, by stealth, under the radar.

Inflation Is a Stealth Tax on You And I

All right, so that can make a guy a little steamed to know that the government has been taking lots of extra taxes over the years by creating inflation and, in effect, ripping money out of our wallets and purses.

But does that mean we are all going to have hyper-inflation? That’s a bit of a stretch, isn’t it? We are not Zimbabwe, for crying out loud.

The First Hyper-Inflation: More History

For 4,500 years gold has been the predominant currency. The first minting of gold coins was in Lydia in 680 B.C.

But gold really became a star in Athens, one of the great civilizations of all time. And Athens fell.

Why?

See if any of this sounds familiar.

Athens got involved in a longer and costlier war than they anticipated.

After 22 years, they decided to debase their money. They mixed in 50% copper into their gold coins.

“This marks the first time there was an official government currency that was not gold or silver, but rather a mixture of gold or silver and copper.” -Maloney

Within two years their currency became worth less.

“Anyone who had held on to the pure gold and silver coins saw their purchasing power increase dramatically.” –Maloney

A similar event happened in Rome.

Emperor Diocletian debased the Roman currency in the same way. Result? A pound of gold was worth 50,000 denari in the year 301 A.D. By mid century gold was worth 2.12 billion denari.

The price of gold rose 42,000 times in half a century.

Ordinary folks went back to bartering.

Perspective For Today

In the 30s, the price of gold was $35 US. If it rose 42,000 times, “…the price today would be just under $1.5 million per ounce.” –Maloney

A new car, says Maloney, would cost about $85 million.

During Financial Upheaval, Wealth is Not Destroyed. It is Merely Transferred.

“Here is the important lesson: During financial upheaval, a bubble popping, a market crash, a depression, or a currency crisis such as this one, wealth is not destroyed. It is merely transferred. During the Weimar hyperinflation, gold and silver didn’t just win, but smashed their opponents into the ground, by delivering yet another devastating blow to fiat currency. Thus, those who held on to real money, instead of currency, reaped the rewards many time over.” –Maloney

The Pattern

This pattern is the same throughout history.

● The country starts out with good currency backed by gold and or silver.

● The temptation for the state is just too great: they eventually debase the currency by diluting the amount of backing. As in Greece and Rome, this can be minting coins with more of the cheaper metals such as copper. It can also in more recent times, mean just printing paper currency and not having any backing at all.

● As inflation gets more and more severe, the people lose faith in the currency.

● At this point, we get a massive move out of the currency and into precious metals and other physical assets.

● The currency collapses and those who had enough foresight to accumulate gold and silver are the recipients of the wealth transfer. (Remember, wealth is not destroyed, simply transferred.)

In June of 2009, I chatted with someone who worked with a Swiss Foundation in Zimbabwe. I asked him how do people deal with 231 million percent inflation? (Yes, that’s right: 231 million percent!)

He said people would buy bottles of Johnny Walker Red because it held its value. Later they would trade their bottles for food.

Changing the Context: The Silent Crash of the Dow

Remember the distinction between money and currency?

Here is a quote: “He knows the price of everything and value of nothing.”-Oscar Wilde

For example, we are quite familiar with stock market indices, The Dow Jones Industrial Index or Dow for short, as an example.

What is the index quoted in? What is it priced in?

Why, U.S. dollars, right?

So, if we see the index is at 12,000 and two years ago it was 8,000, we are looking at a 33% increase in the Dow.

That would be in nominal dollars.

In other words, that 33% increase is before we factor inflation into the equation.

What if?

What if instead we valued the Dow against money instead of currency?

Would it make a difference?

On page 60 of Maloney’s book, “Guide to Investing in Gold and Silver,” we see a chart of the Dow from 1996 to 2008. We note the Dow has gone from about 5,000 to about 12,500. Pretty good.

That’s valuing the Dow against the currency, in this case, the U.S. dollar.

Now, let’s value it against money, i.e. gold.

We see that in 1996, it took about 12.5 ounces of gold to buy one share of the Dow. In 1999, about 45 ounces and in 2008, about 15 ounces.

So, from 1999 to 2008, the Dow actually lost two thirds of its value, priced against real money or gold.

Perhaps even more to the point is how much “stuff” will be able to buy. You know, the things we use every day. After all, we can’t eat gold.

This is where the Dow priced against commodities, agricultural products and oil comes in. These charts are in the book. Have a look.

Let’s take oil.

“If you sold one share of the Dow in early 1999 you could buy 800 barrels of oil. As I write this it only buys 100. Since 1999 the value of the Dow has plummeted 87.5%, measured against oil. But remember, oil doesn’t just end up as gasoline. It is the single most useful commodity there is. It’s used to make medicines, fertilizers, plastics, tar for our roads, and the tires for your car.” –Maloney (my bolding)

Real Inflation Now

All this should indicate that inflation is just a bit higher than the official Consumer Price Index (CPI) that the government publishes.

You may have suspected that the government fools around just a little with the CPI.

How can we tell how much real inflation is?

In the U.S., an organization called Shadow Government Statistics tracks that very thing.

Real Inflation May Be Two And a Half Time Official CPI

ShadowStats.com indicates that real inflation is running at two and half times the official CPI of 2% as of this writing. http://www.shadowstats.com/

Remember again the Law of Supply and Demand. On March 23, 2006, the Federal Reserve in the U.S. stopped publishing the broadest measure of money supply, M3.

Future Inflation May Track M3, Which is Now Inflating at 18%/Year

Now, hold on to your hat because this one’s going to hurt: Since 2000, the Fed has increased the M3 currency supply by a whopping 112%! Thus, any investment that has returned less than 112% over this time period is underwater. This means that the Dow would have to be above 25,000, not 14,000, to have the same value it had back at the turn of this century. And not it is estimated that M3 is inflating at a rate of about 18% per year and rising. I would expect that prices could follow suit within a couple of years.” –Maloney

We are in a Commodities Cycle

Jim Rogers’ book “Hot Commodities” points out that we are now in an upcycle for commodities generally, which would include the precious metals such as gold and silver.

(Jim Rogers co-founded, with George Soros, the Quantum Fund and retired at the age of 37. The Fund was a pioneer hedge fund. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Rogers )

Commodities And Financial Assets Are Counter Cyclical

When one is up, the other is down.

There have been 3 major commodity bull markets in the 20th Century, lasting an average of 17 years.

A new one is underway and Rogers forecasts it will run until as late as 2021.

Quotes from what he considers a major academic study on commodities in 2004 from the Yale School of Management’s Center for International Finance, “Facts and Fantasies About Commodity Futures.” He calls it a truly revolutionary document:

“* Since 1959, commodities futures have produced better returns than stocks and outperformed bonds even more. Commodities have also had less risk than stocks and bonds, as well as better returns.

          * During the 1970s, commodities futures outperformed stocks; during the 1980s, the exact opposite was true – evidence of the “negative correlation” between stocks and commodities that many of us had noticed. Bull markets in commodities are accompanied by bear markets in stocks, and vice versa.

*The returns on commodities futures in the study were ‘positively correlated’ with inflation. Higher commodity prices were the leading wave of high prices in general (i.e., inflation), and that’s why commodity returns do better in inflationary times, while stocks and bonds perform poorly.

…*While investing in commodities companies is one rational way to play a commodity bull market, it is not necessarily the best way. The returns of commodities futures examined in the study were ‘triple’ the returns for stocks in companies that produced those same commodities.”

Here is Rogers in 2007, prior to the Quatitative Easing post 2008 crisis:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=airxvVmGnqc

Here he is in March 2011:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hDxPg-DIn0

Ten-term Republican Congressman Ron Paul also speaks about this topic:

“This is so huge that nobody can quite comprehend it. It is into the many, many trillions of dollars. All we know for certain is that it’s not workable and it will fall apart.

I always tell the elderly, ‘You are always going to get a check. We are always going to send you a check for your Social Security, and it’s always going to go up. But we will always fudge on what the real rate of inflation is…so your real income is going to stay flat or go down. You’re always going to get a check, but the question is: “What’s it going to buy? If electricity doubles and your check doesn’t double, you’re going to suffer.’

I think this country is going to get much, much poorer and the entitlements will finally have to end because just printing the money and running up the deficit or expecting foreigners to continue to loan us the money is not going to last. It’s just a dream and it’s very, very serious.”

-Ron Paul, quoted in “Guide to Investing in Gold and Silver.” (my bolding)

Opportunity

You need a plan!

The more I study, the more I am absolutely convinced that there is no better place to be for this portion of the cycle than in precious metals.” –Maloney

Given this information, what is the “action plan?”

Much depends on you. But this is always for sure: It is wiser to invest with a plan.

“The secret to your financial success is inside yourself. If you become a critical thinker who takes no Wall Street ‘fact’ on faith, and you invest with patient confidence, you can take steady advantage of even the worst bear markets. By developing discipline and your courage, you can refuse to let other people’s mood swings govern your financial destiny. In the end, how your investments behave is much less important that how you behave.” Benjamin Graham

If you are in retirement and relying on pensions, then please refer to tips 97-101 on The Myth of Retirement. It may be wise to consider developing an independent source of income.

In every crisis, there is also an opportunity. And not just for investing, but for providing a service that uses your unique skills and talents. This allows self-expression, a critical part in self-worth. Providing a service that has value can create income and, just as importantly create confidence knowing that whatever life throws at us, we can deal with.

Getting Things Done. Beyond “Time Management” Part Two

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

The list of things to do is endless. Neither you nor I or anyone else will ever complete our list. Last time, we talked about priorities.

This time, we dig even deeper. We are entering the world of “Organizing All of Our Life.”

Sounds fancy, ostentatious and impossible…right?

Truth be told, it is a “Work in Progress. Having said that, the book "Getting Things Done" by David Allen, goes a long way to relieving much of the stresses involved in getting organized. His system, we can call it GTD, hinges on getting the multiple lists of things to do out of our heads and onto paper.

GTD organizes the lists in such a way that we don’t have to remember stuff. Instead, we can focus on the task at hand. You will notice I said “task,” not “tasks.” Forget “multi-tasking.” It is, at best, a useless waste of time. We humans are built in such a way that it is next to impossible to do more than one thing at a time and do it well.

Instead, we are far better served by providing deep focus on one task or to-do item at a time. Get it done as best as it can be, the first time. Often, multi-tasking means having to come back and do it over again. What a time waster.

GTD recommends taking a block of time at first, to go through everything in your life. I chose to organize mine into two main areas: personal and business.

In the personal arena, I have these categories:

•    Reading
•    Study
•    Health
•    To buy
•    To contact
•    Other

In my business life, I chose to organize thusly:

•    Reading
•    Study
•    To buy
•    To write
•    To contact
•    Other

You may choose totally other categories based on your priorities.

The next step was going through everything that was in my head about things I wanted to do and write each one down on a sticky note. For example, “Read Peace Pilgrim’s book” is on one sticky in my personal section.

I have 5 stickies for areas of personal study. Many more for areas of health study, a decent list of things to buy, another of friends to contact and many in “other,” ranging from record some vinyl records into my computer to start an indoor herb garden to darn my wool socks to play “Kim’s Game.”

Similarly, there are stickies for many business projects.

I chose to use the Daytimers™ fold out pages, which can show me all four pages in one view. I can see all of my personal and business projects laid out on those four pages.

You can use the ideas from the previous tip (#103) to prioritize. I also learned from Dan Sullivan, “The Strategic Coach” and from T. Harv Eker’s “Success Trax” system.

You can choose categories such as health, business, money, personal and professional mastery and any other area that is a priority in your life.

Spend time daydreaming what an ideal life in each those categories would look like. Then write down what that ideal life would look like.

For example, in my Personal Mastery section, I wrote down a list:

•    High loving energy level
•    Bliss
•    Living in love, let go of all fears
•    Continued opening to God

This was written years ago now and I added the GTD system to it later. I feel I have made huge progress in each of those areas and the GTD system helped. From each of those lofty goals, a number of individual steps emerged onto stickies. From there, some of the projects have been completed and my energy has moved in the direction of those goals.

This is always a work in progress and we will always have improvements to make. It is not about the destination so much as the path. And it can become more and more joyous as we move forward.

I am not the only one who raves about GTD. In 2005, Wired called GTD "A new cult for the info age."

Allen's ideas have also been popularized through the Howard Stern Show and the Internet, especially via blogs such as Lifehacker.

In 2005, David Allen was interviewed for The Guardian, with an article called "Meet The Man Who Can Bring Order To Your Universe,” saying “…Allen's ideas are nothing short of life-changing."

In 2007, Time Magazine called Getting Things Done the self-help business book of its time.

Lose the Wheat, Gain Your Health

“Modern Wheat is not Food. It is a Highly Addictive Poison.”

That is the contention of the author of Wheat Belly. Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health.

Dr. William Davis is a preventive cardiologist who advocates reversal of heart disease, not just prevention.

Today’s Wheat is Not What is Used to be

Davis’ contention is that modern wheat has been hybridized so many times, that it bears little resemblance to the original grain. Therefore, modern wheat creates a host of conditions in your body and mine.

Thousands Have Had Results

The first thing to note from the book is that Dr. Davis has had success with his patients. He has put thousands of his patients on wheat-free regimens and they have improved their health.

After removing grain for 3 months from his diabetic/overweight patients, the diabetics became non-diabetic and many of them had lost twenty, thirty, even forty pounds. Other conditions that improved: acid reflux disappeared, cramping and diarrhea gone, energy improved, greater focus, sleep was deeper, rashes disappeared, rheumatoid arthritis pain improved, asthma symptoms improved.

Do Your Own Experiment

Best way to approach this? Personal experimentation, as recommended by Timothy Ferris in his work The Four Hour Body.

Eating Wheat Makes You Hungry!

Gluten is one of wheat’s main proponents.  Gluten is degraded to a mix of polypeptides.  Once having gained entry into the brain, wheat polypeptides bind to the brain’s morphine receptor, the very same receptor to which opiate drugs bind.

Wheat, like High Fructose Corn Syrup, is an appetite stimulant: it makes you want to eat more. Is it any wonder that we have an obesity and overweight epidemic?

How it Works

The essential phenomenon that sets the growth of the wheat belly in motion is high blood sugar (glucose).  High blood sugar, in turn, provokes high blood insulin.  High blood insulin provokes visceral fat accumulation, which causes tissues such as muscle and liver to respond less to insulin.  This so-called insulin resistance means that the pancreas must produce greater and greater quantities of insulin to metabolize the sugars.  Eventually, a vicious circle of increased: insulin resistance, insulin production, deposition of visceral fat, insulin resistance etc, etc, ensues.

Visceral Fat Means Higher Risk of Breast Cancer and “Manboobs”

Visceral fat is also a factory for estrogen production in both sexes.  Women = higher risks for breast cancer.  Men = larger breasts or “manboobs”.

The “Low Fat” Craze Means we are Eating More Wheat

If national wheat consumption is averaged across all Americans, the average American consumes 133 pounds of wheat per year, or a bit more than half a loaf of bread per day.

This Can Lead to Pancreatic Burnout and Diabetes

Carbohydrates trigger insulin release from the pancreas, causing growth of visceral fat; visceral fat causes insulin resistance and inflammation.  High blood sugars, triglycerides, and fatty acids damage the pancreas.  After years of overwork, the pancreas succumbs to the thrashing it has taken from glucotoxicity, lipotoxicity, and inflammation, essentially burning out, leaving a deficiency of insulin and an increase in blood glucose and diabetes.

Eating Wheat Can Age You Faster

All carbohydrates increase blood sugar. This includes fruit and all other grains as well. Modern wheat just happens to trump most of them…even white sugar!

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), is the name given to the stuff that stiffens arteries, clouds the lenses of the eyes (cataracts) and mucks up the neuronal connections of the brain (dementia). The acronym (AGEs) says it well: this process ages us…faster.

The Size of the “Bad” Cholesterol Determines its Effect

(This little section may give you more information on the effects of cholesterol than even your doctor knows!)

You have no doubt heard about the two kinds of cholesterol: High Density Lipoproteins (HDLs), the so called “good” cholesterol. And Low Density Lipoproteins or LDLs, the “bad” cholesterol.

What you may not have heard is that there are two sizes of LDLs, large and small. The size of the LDL determines whether it will accumulate on the walls of your arteries. The large LDL is defined as 25.5 nanometer or larger, while the small LDL is less than 25.5 nanometer.

Dr. Davis maintains that cholesterol has little to do with atherosclerosis. Instead it is about one crucial group of particles: very low-density lipoproteins, or VLDL.

A series of changes in the bloodstream determines whether VLDL will be converted to big or small LDL particles, and diet has a very powerful influence over this.

Eating Fat Does Not Increase Triglyceride Levels

Recent research shows that while consuming fats does indeed deliver greater quantities of triglycerides into the liver and bloodstream, it also shuts down the body’s own production of triglycerides, so the net effect of high fat intake is little or no change in triglyceride levels.

Eating Carbs Does Increase Triglycerides

Carbs, on the other hand, contain virtually no triglycerides.  But carbs possess the unique capacity to stimulate insulin, which in turn triggers fatty acid synthesis in the liver, which floods the bloodstream with triglycerides.

High insulin levels efficiently transform carbs into triglycerides, which are then packaged into VLDL particles.

Anything that provokes an increase in blood sugar will also provoke small LDL particles.  Anything that keeps blood sugar from increasing such as proteins, fats, and reduction in carbs such as wheat, reduces small LDL particles. Conclusion: Proteins And Fats Keep Blood Sugars from Increasing, While Carbs Increase Blood Sugar.

Wheat Creates Addiction and Obsessive Behavior…Just Like Opiates

This is from a byproduct of gluten called “exorphins.” Exorphins cause your brain to instruct you to eat more food. In other words, it turns off the “satiety switch.” You never feel truly satisfied and much the same way as High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Dr. Davis indicates modern wheat has a unique substance called gliadin that stimulates appetite meaning the average person is consuming, in his estimate, an extra 440 more calories per day.

Modern Wheat is a Perfect, Chronic Poison

“Modern wheat is a perfect, chronic poison. It causes diabetes. It causes inflammation. It causes heart disease. It causes high blood pressure…if we eliminate wheat, that’s when we see transformation. That’s when we see all the diabetics get rid of their drugs…that’s when we see high cholesterol going away. That’s when we see incredible transformations in health.” –Dr. William Davis, interviewed on CBS.

How Focusing on Your Most Important Goals First Can Develop More Ease and a Greater Sense of Accomplishment

You are not going to get everything done. Not in your lifetime. Not ever. Get over it.

What you can do is get the most important things done. And that is all anyone can hope for.

To do that, though, we all are going to have to give up stuff. Giving up trivial stuff may or may not be easy for most of us, but it is do-able.

Giving up goals we may want, even want badly, may not be so easy. The first step is identifying what is important, what is close to our core being, what nourishes us at a deep level vs. what is “entertaining,” what is merely satisfying, but not necessarily nourishing our souls.

Giving up stuff is huge step. This tip and the next one will attempt to create some clarity around this.

We can take lessons from the late Steven Covey book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

In The Seven Habits, Covey proposes that you:

◊ Be proactive. Make things happen rather than waiting for them to happen.

◊ Begin with the end in mind. Motivate yourself – and direct your energy and activities more effectively – by clearly defining and visualizing your goals.

◊ Put first things first. Eliminate time wasters (like mindless talk, channel surfing and social networking) and focus on things that will improve the quality of your personal and professional life.

◊ Think win-win. You achieve things more easily in a cooperative effort than in a competitive struggle. Instead of thinking "their way" or "my way," look for how others can achieve their objectives as you realize yours.

◊ Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Persuasive communication is essential. But it begins with being an empathetic listener. Most people do not listen to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.

◊ Synergize. Ally yourself with capable individuals. Their strengths will compensate for your weaknesses and move you closer to your goal.

◊ Sharpen the saw. Balance all four aspects of your life – mental, physical, emotional and spiritual – to become more effective. Sharpening the saw means renewing yourself through family, friends, exercise, and devotion or meditation.

While Covey recommended beginning each day with a 15 minute planning session, I suggest doing this at the end of the day. Planning your next day at the end of the day allows your subconscious mind to work overnight on the challenges in your next day’s projects.

◊ After you've listed everything, label each item with an A, B or C. A stands for "Must Be Done." B means "Should Be Done." And C is "Could Be Done."

◊ Return to the A's and number each task according to how vital it is. An action toward your most important goal (whether it's career advancement, better fitness or learning to play the clarinet) should always be ranked A1. Your second biggest priority is A2. And so on. Rank the B's and C's the same way.

◊ Set a time limit for each task.
This cannot be overemphasized. Marketing guru Dan Kennedy tells us this is the one key ingredient that most “time management” systems miss and is what can set us apart from the crowd. It is based on the understanding that work expands to fill the time allotted. So, if we don’t allot a specific amount of time, the task can continue to expand…indefinitely.

◊ Work in “Power Blocks.” Rather than trying to run a marathon every day, keeping up the same speed, run short sprints. 45 minutes is a good rule of thumb. Start off each day working on task A1…for 45 minutes. Focus and do not let anything interfere, phone calls, emails, Facebook, etc. At the end of 45 minutes, get up, stretch, walk around, get a glass of water, breathe. You can take 5-15 minutes to relax, then dive into another power block.

◊ There may be times when you are on a roll and don’t want to stop. Be flexible, you may just find that occasionally you can run two power blocks into each other and get a project really well tackled.

◊ Now start on A2. And continue down the line. Only after all the A's are finished should you turn to the B's – and only when those are completed do you start on C1.

◊ You won't get everything done on your list each day. Maybe you're so busy you don't get to the B's at all. And that's fine. But at least you're working on what matters most. (As Covey puts it, "The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.")

◊ Carry the undone items over to tomorrow. Do your planning session at the end of the day for the next day.

And you may think this is only for work or business. Not so. Tell me why you cannot do this for personal tasks as well?

Covey's real contribution was not efficiency techniques or time management strategies. It was urging us to focus on the important, not just the urgent. He reminds us that there shouldn't be a gap between what you value and how you spend your time.

Time Management: The Myth. You Can’t “Manage Time.” You Can Only Manage Yourself.

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

No one has a lack of time. It’s all a matter of priorities.

“Nature does not hurry. Yet everything is accomplished.” -Lao Tzu

We are taught/propagandized/programmed (I-dare-not-say-brainwashed) to be in a hurry. I must remember to unhook myself from that feeling and "do less and achieve more" as my tai chi master taught me. It's more delightful really and life unfolds wonderfully well that way.

As Peace Pilgrim said:

"If your life is in harmony with your part in the Life Pattern, and if you are obedient to the laws which govern the universe, then your life is full and good and not overcrowded.

If it is overcrowded, you are doing more than is right for you to do, more than is your job to do in the total scheme of things."

For business folks, here are some useful tips for managing your schedule. Again, this is about managing ourselves, not time, which is unmanageable.

#1 Tip: Block out your to-do list on your calendar. This is critical: Allocate a specific amount of time to each task. So after you've finished putting together your list for the day and have ensured that the number of hours of workload corresponds to the number of hours available to you, fill up your calendar completely with all the time blocks you just created. Leave nothing out, including time for relaxing and eating.

Do this the night before so you are ready to hit the ground running when you start work. Your subconscious mind will also have a chance to work on the next day’s challenges overnight. This one tip will go a long, long way to creating more ease in your life.

Schedule the most important things first. Not emails, not Facebook, not returning phone calls. This harks back to Steven Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. As Covey points out, it is easy to be sucked into someone else’s urgency. Just because it is urgent and possibly important to someone else, does not mean it is either urgent or important to you. Keep your own counsel and determine your priorities when scheduling.

Remember, no one has a lack of time. It is all a matter of priorities.

Regarding “the most important thing:” if you have a particularly thorny issue, possibly emotion-laden, some advise doing it first. Do the hardest thing first every day. This has many benefits. Once done, it no longer takes up space on your “hard drive.” No longer is it sitting in the background creating low level anxiety, muscular tension and worry. It’s done!

Another benefit, every time we tackle a hard challenge, we increase our level of self esteem. We build our “tackling challenges” muscle. We build a skill at handling more and more difficult problems. This is a good thing because, as we may have between the lines in the “Myth of Retirement” series of tips/articles, we are meant to work harder and harder as we grow older. We are meant to put our experience, skills and wisdom to good use, not to let them wither on the vine in the mistaken myth of “taking it easy” in our later years.

This is all tempered by the philosophy and practice of “Do less, achieve more.” What this looks like in practice is “not pushing the river.” Many writers and speakers tell us to push hard to achieve our goals. “Do less, achieve more” is more about what covey calls the difference between efficiency and effectiveness. Efficiency is about getting the ladder up quickly and hurrying to paint the side of the house. Effectiveness is about ensuring you have the ladder against the right wall! “Haste makes waste” is a good saying to remind ourselves of whenever we feel like rushing to get something done.

# 2 Tip: Focus on one thing. That means habits, activities, people, the whole gamut. If it does not help in reaching the goal of the one thing that is of foremost importance for you, let it go. Easier said than done. Perhaps that is why so many struggle as they try to multi-task and be all things to all people. Do NOT multi-task, unless perhaps you are reviewing something while on hold.

#3 Tip: e-mail twice a day is plenty. Once is better. Same for Facebook and other social media. If you need to be in front of social media eyes, buy a program like Hootsuite that will post a message for you every hour.

#4 Tip: Group similar tasks in the same time slots.
Phone calls, for example, can be made all at the same time, during a half-hour or hour time period marked on your calendar. It is easier to keep your focus when doing similar tasks together. It is easy to lose your focus if you flip among many types of tasks.

#5 Tip: Write brief memos. Keep them to one page.

# 6 Tip: Keep meetings to a minimum. Limit meeting length with the easy and simple method of having everyone stand during the meeting. Schedule a time limit for each topic.

# 7 Tip: Block your phone calls.
Don’t take calls. Return calls in your phone call block that you put in your schedule. For many calls, you can schedule your calls using email. This gets you out of “phone tag hell.”

While these ideas are for business folk, can you see how to use the same principles for personal life?

Dedicated to Health, Wealth and Fr~eedom

Merry HO HO to one and all.

The Best Reason to Write a Book? You learn SO much. The Zen of Joy is out at my publisher Fast Pencil. http://www.fastpencil.com/publications/4844-The-Zen-of-Joy

This has been a major focus since September of 2011 and now it is done. Whew. Love it. Now on to using the “protocols” from the book to conduct talks, seminars and workshops and whatever else pops up.

I saw a hole in the self development books marketplace. Because everyone is SO busy these days, few believe they have the time to work on developing skills like happiness. You know: “I believe in ________________, I just don’t have the time.” Fill in the blank with meditation, tai chi, qigong, yoga, EFT, exercise, running, etc.

This perceived lack of time means many folks just are not taking advantage of some wonderful tools that are available.

So….I put together 24 practices, or “protocols” as I call them, that anyone can do, that work together synergistically, provide tremendous benefits (the subtitle is How to Rewire Your Brain for Happiness and Success. Minutes a Day to Boost Your Performance, Productivity and Profits.).

It’s that “Minutes a Day” bit that I think may well appeal to a specific group of folks, i.e. Boomers who are working hard to get their retirement in order in a challenging economic environment…and getting stressed out.

Here is the more detailed story on my webpage: http://zenofjoy.com/

By studying for the book, I learned the simple things it takes to be in joy and bliss most of the time. The more I studied, the more I wanted to share this joy. The book is the result.

In the meantime, I have been racing to the finish line with my 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health. 100 tips are now written and remaining eight should be complete by year end. This is a free email course that is combined with a laughter video, so you can laugh along with me…every day if you choose. I have added a bonus to the front of the course: How to Add Ten Good Years to Your Life. In Four Easy Steps and in Just Minutes a Day, You Too Can Add Ten Good Years to Your Life.

Here is where it lives: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/add-ten-healthy-years-life/

Personal notes this year. I was able to get to Finland and the UK in May/June to visit family and a great time was had by all. Finnish country food, saunas, decent weather most of the time. The highlight in Finland was walks in the country and rowing on a lake with my cousin. In London, went to a few out of the way places, but I loved the free Maritime Museum and its ship simulator. Did OK with the small boats, but I crashed the big ferry onto the dock at Dover in a storm. 🙂

A very Merry Christmas and just an awesome New Year 2013 to you and yours.

Much Love and Lots of Laughter, Matti

By Dr. Mercola

First of all, it is vital to understand that the most important strategy you can implement for your physical health is to eat the right foods and commit to an exercise program. Supplements are only complementary to a phenomenal diet, and should never be used in place of nutritious foods.

69 percent of American adults take supplements. There's a plethora to choose from out there, from vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to herbs and various combinations thereof. But which ones might you really need?

Unless you're addressing a specific condition, and if you're on a tight budget the most important and valuable supplements to consider are:

    Vitamin D

    Probiotics / Fermented Veggies / Vitamin K2

    Omega-3

    Ubiquinol

    Astaxanthin

    Magnesium

    Sulfur

The Myth of Retirement. Part Five. Possible Solutions

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

Believing in the myth of retirement brings on a whole cascade of negative consequences. One of the false assumptions that hold up the myth is that age 65 (or any arbitrary age) is old.

Whether we think 65 is old or 70 or 75, we give instructions to our subconscious mind to deliver on that belief and make us old.

The subconscious mind more or less runs our lives. Whatever beliefs and/or feelings are stored there reflects into our world.

Do you doubt that statement? Then think of driving a car for the first time. There are so many things to think about consciously…taking the parking brake off, putting the car into gear, checking all three rearview mirrors, looking to see there is no other car coming before we pull out, checking for pedestrians and especially young children.

Now, take your right foot off the brake, put it on the accelerator pedal, signal, turn the steering wheel, gently press on the accelerator, check again for traffic. Add more pressure until you are up to speed, watch for stop signs, red lights, think about what your destination is and what is the best route to take. Watch for other cars and try to anticipate them in case someone cuts you off. Look in the rear view mirrors again, brake…whoops, not too hard. Signal a turn, look over your shoulder to make sure no one is coming.

Whew. There is so much to do, you may have found yourself quite tired after the first time at the wheel. You park the car, put it in neutral, apply the parking brake and breathe a sigh of relief. You made it without hitting anybody and only got honked at once. 🙂

Now think about driving once you have been doing it for years. You may have had the experience of driving somewhere, reaching your destination and realizing you had missed the whole drive as your mind was daydreaming somewhere else entirely.

The subconscious mind has learned the skill and it took over all those conscious functions.

That is an example. Once we program it, the subconscious basically runs the show. So it is with retirement. We learned a set of beliefs about retirement and the subconscious makes those beliefs come true.

Remember the four false assumptions about retirement? Once again, they are:
1)    Age 65 is old.
2)    Leisure is more fulfilling than work.
3)    Older people should make room for the next generation
4)    People over 65 make worse workers.

1 and 4 may be the worst. Regardless, if these ideas that are now fully subscribed by the subconscious mind, the subconscious moves heaven and earth to make them come true. We become old before our time and we can actually become worse workers…until and unless we unravel those belief structures and replace them with something more positive.

Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with stepping aside from work if you the finances to do so. Here though is a unique and relatively easy way to undo the negative influences of the retirement myth, even if you are already retired.

Marci Shimoff, the author of Happy for no Reason, tells the story of her father who retired at age 72 from a job he absolutely loved, dentistry. When he retired, he asked himself, what is it about the job that I love so much? He came up with the answer that it was the intricate work involved. So…he started to do needlepoint!

He kept it up, stayed active and loved his life in “retirement.” At age 85, Marci was visiting with him when he was just starting on a large needlepoint project. Amazed, Marci asked how long he expected it to take? Her father’s answer was, that at the speed he had been going, he expected it to take four years. Here was a man at age 85, starting on a four year project!

Did he finish it? Yes, and it now hangs on Marci’s wall. The video of Marci explaining this may still be up…check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=941eHxlqNXU&feature=plcp

So, what is the formula for unraveling the negative and damaging beliefs about retirement? If we take the example of Marci’s father, it is this: figure out what gives or gave you the “job satisfaction” in your work and find a away to get that same satisfaction in another way.

Some may say they have little or no “job satisfaction,” that their work is just a paycheck. It may be challenging to find what fuels our passion if it has been allowed to idle for a long time. It may however be one of the most important challenges you take on as it has the potential to get in touch with your inner joy on a deep level.

Many of these 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health are designed to help you with this. If you have been laughing daily with me on the video at the beginning of the series, you are no doubt more in touch with your inner Authentic Joy. Tip #3 is a great help in making decisions.

My book The Zen of Joy, How to Rewire Your Brain for Happiness and Success. Minutes a Day to Boost Your Performance, Productivity and Profits can be a help too.

It is a series of 24 “protocols” that work synergistically to unlock the inner joy. In doing the program, you may find yourself being led to your passion without any real effort. Here is more info: http://zenofjoy.com/

The bad news: each of us has to find our own way.

The good news: each of us has a unique path that can manifest joy, energy and health for us.

Use the tools. Pay attention to intuition. Meditation is most helpful. There is a zen saying: “We need to meditate 15 minutes a day unless we are very busy, in which case, we need to meditate one hour a day.”

Many of my best ideas have come to me during meditation.

The Myth of Retirement Part Four The Most Successful Marketing Campaign in History is Built on Four Lies

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

The whole concept of retirement is based on four assumptions. All of them are false. Here they are:

1)    Age 65 is old.
2)    Leisure is more fulfilling than work.
3)    Older people should make room for the next generation
4)    People over 65 make worse workers.

All of these may have been true at some point. In the 21st Century, we can now easily see they are all bilge and balderdash.

When enough people get it, retirement may quickly wither on the vine. Boomers can stop racing for an imaginary and illusory finishing line and fully enjoy their lives.

Destroying the Four Assumptions

Assumption 1. “Age 65 is old.”

When President Roosevelt set the US retirement age at 65, the average American lived to 63. Today, Wikipedia tells us:

The life expectancy at birth of the world is 67.2 years … for 2005–2010, according to United Nations World Population Prospects 2006 Revision and 66.57 years … for 2009 according to CIA World Factbook 2009.

Today, the US life expectancy is 78.2, while Canada is 80.7, Japan 82.7.

“Your adult life will be twice as long as you thought it would be. And if you’re in reasonably good health and have good habits, most of this time will be just as productive as earlier years.” –Lydia Bronte, former director of the Carnegie Foundation’s Aging Society.

Assumption 2. “Leisure is more fulfilling than work.”

Can’t you just go golfing? Can’t you just “take it easy?” Ask those who have tried it. When I had my 15 year career as a financial planner, I asked some of my retired clients this question. I vividly remember one retired man who had taken a part time job as a security guard at the Provincial Legislature in Victoria, B.C. When I mentioned that research showed retirement as being more traumatic than divorce or death of a loved one, it was like the dam burst on something he had not been able to share with anyone: “Matti, you have no idea how hard it is.”

“Lots of people find purpose and meaning in work. For many, it’s the reason for getting up in the morning.” –Catherine D. Fryock, co-author of Unretirement.

You probably know people who have become ill right after retirement and some who died. One study shows that almost a third of retirees return to work. Over two thirds of those take a full time job.

Assumption 3: “Older people should make room for the next generation.”

The Baby Bust generation that follows the Baby Boomers are fewer in number. Boomers retiring means fewer productive workers who are withdrawing from the workforce. Production output is produced by people who are working. If we have fewer and fewer workers, what do you think can happen to living standards?

Assumption 4: “People over 65 make worse workers.”

This can be true for physically demanding jobs. In other cases, older workers may well be more productive than younger, less experienced workers.

Even without the aid of the new science of neuroplasticity that shows how we can continue to increase our brain power as we age, studies have shown that age does not affect mental powers until middle to late 70s. And then it is a decrease in short term memory.

Solution? Carry a note book!

Programming people to get out of the work force at 65 when there is some memory loss in the mid to late 70s is like hitting a fly with a sledgehammer. Poor analogy maybe, but you get the idea.

There are a lot of positives that older workers have: fewer mistakes, fewer accidents, lower absenteeism and a stronger work ethic. As an employer, which would you rather have? A young person with lots of energy, bouncing off the walls, but also some “loose cannon” tendencies, or an experienced older person who you only have to ask to carry a notebook to compensate for some short term memory loss?

And why are not employers even asking this question? Could it be the programming is so deeply entrenched in the unconscious that this question would never even come up?

The Myth of Retirement Part Three

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

How We Got Here: A Brief History of Retirement

Prior to the Industrial Age, there was more “job satisfaction.” Author Robert Atchley in The Sociology of Retirement points out that a craftsman controls both process and product. That makes work a satisfying and integral part of his life.

On the other hand, an industrial worker is responsible for only a part of the process. Clearly, that is less rewarding. A craftsman had a craft and a vocation. With industrialization, those words were replaced by “job” and “occupation.”

Older people were valued and relied on for their insight, their deep knowledge hard won over a lifetime, their moral lessons and yes, their wisdom. Contrast that with the ageism that exists today with older people viewed as infirm, useless and/or “over the hill.” This did not happen by accident. There was a deliberate, conscious, sophisticated propaganda campaign to get you to take on these beliefs.

The year is 1905. Dr. William Osler, a highly respected doctor delivers his valedictory speech on leaving his post at Johns Hopkins University. Osler says: “Take the sum of human achievement in action, in science, in art, in literature. Subtract the work of men above 40, and while we would miss great treasures, even priceless treasures, we would practically be where we are today.”

He goes on to add that men older than 60 are entirely useless and a drain on society because of their inelastic minds. As you now know, that is absolute and utter bilge and balderdash as evidenced by the study of neuroplasticity you learned about in tip # 15.

Nevertheless, Osler floated the idea of what to do with all these “useless” 60 year olds. Send them to a “college” at age 60 for a year of contemplation…and then, we chloroform them! Kill ‘em off at age 61. Cute. He may have said it facetiously, but there is no evidence that he was booed off stage.

Fast forward to 1933, the absolute bottom of the Great Depression. One quarter of the labor force, thirteen million Americans, are out of work. Angry young men, fueled with testosterone, are on the streets. Communist and Fascist ideas are held up as solutions. This is a volatile mix. President Franklin D. Roosevelt decides to act.

He sets up public pensions to entice older men to retire so younger men could take their place, getting them off the streets where they might foment revolution.

And where did the “retirement age” of 65 come from? Quite possibly from German Chancellor Count Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck plucked “three score and ten years” from the Bible and used it as the threshold for pension benefits. A few years later, he lowered it to 65 because so few were collecting. German life expectancy at the time was 46!

And American life expectancy? 63. With so few living to 65, Roosevelt was not in danger of giving away the store. The Social Security Act taxed workers who far outnumbered the newly formed group to be called “retirees.” In fact, at the time there were 40 workers supporting each retiree.

As noted in the last tip, Boomers, those born between 1946 and 1960, far outnumber the generation following. AND they are living far longer. Many Boomers are keenly interested in their health, watching their diet, exercise and lifestyle and may even extend life expectancy.

The Myth of Retirement. Part Two. The Collapse of Retirement May Be The Best Thing That Can Happen.

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

The Collapse of Retirement May Be The Best Thing That Can Happen

Why?

Because it may open up undreamed of possibilities for Boomers for personal, professional and financial growth.

This retirement timetable that ruled our parents’ lives (I say “our” because I am a Boomer as well) may no longer apply. We will be free to live longer, happier, healthier and more rewarding lives. There need not be any painful compromises to reach an artificial goal. There need not be a finish line, a race.

Life is Not a Race.

Despite the heavy duty programming we are subject to in the media and by our peers, the only finish line is when we eventually shuck this mortal coil. And even death, if we are to believe in reincarnation, is just a transition and apparently, not even a painful one.

When we give up this artificial goal of retiring as soon as possible, we can change our view of what it means to age. The stereotypes of old age: infirmity, illness, taking pills, living in retirement homes are deeply ingrained in us.

Boomers are certainly starting to fight against it. See the new term invented by Canadian media mogul Moses Znaimer: “Zoomers” or Boomers with Zip.

That’s a positive step. I will suggest another step. Why don’t we start seeing ourselves as growing in skill, in patience, in health and in wisdom all through our lives…right up to when we die.

The new science of “Neuro-Plasticity” is showing us part of this new picture of health in older age. As we saw in Tip # 15 of 108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health, researchers are showing us is that, if we continue to learn new skills, we can continue to grow neurons in the brain and can keep the brain vibrant and alive.

Here is one common example. We are programmed to believe in the myth that our memory becomes less acute in older age.

There is little to support the belief that we lose memory as we age.

As an aging boomer, I may walk into a room forgetting why I did so. What did I want in here? Ever had that experience?

Guess What? We all had memory lapses when we were younger. In fact, we have all had memory lapses all through our lives. We thought nothing of it. But because we are programmed to believe in memory loss in older age, we now attribute the current memory challenge as being caused by our age. We have even coined a term for it: “A senior moment.”

We may now become concerned about the potential for it getting worse as we age and perhaps even becoming Alzheimer’s disease.

This concern, if we feed it with enough emotion, can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. “What you focus on grows.” Another way of saying it is “Energy flows where attention goes.”

In other words, feed that thought about memory loss with enough words said often enough out loud or silently with emotion and we help it to become reality.

So, is the answer to retaining a good memory in older age as simple as not believing it and not worrying about it?

The answer may well be YES!

The challenge is to un-do a lifetime of programming we have been subjected to. The devil is in the details. We can refer to Tip # 15 again to see what actions we can take to keep the brain active, what neuroplasticity has to show us.

Also, here is where it can be useful to look at the history of retirement so we can unravel in our logical minds how we came to believe in it and in the other myths of aging.  We will do that next time.

The Myth of Retirement. Part One. Don’t Retire. There are Better Goals in Life.

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs, Mastery Newsletter

Retirement is a weird social experiment, a historical blip. Its collapse will be a triumph for common sense.

We are not meant to retire. There is nothing else in nature that retires. Plants and trees, animals and fish continue to grow…until they die.

Humans are the only ones, with their oversized brains, that have created this artificial state and goal of “taking it easy” when we get to a certain age.

We are not meant to “take it easy.” As we grow older, more knowledgeable and perhaps even wiser, we are meant to use the knowledge, the skill sets we have picked up and the wisdom to help others.

Instead, we as societies through our programming, have come to believe that older people are less useful. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The baby boomers, of which I am one, have been particularly aggressive in pursuing retirement and even early retirement. “Keeping up with the Jones’s” has come to mean the earlier you retire, the better off you are and the bigger bragging rights you have.

This goal and the attitudes around retirement are fraught with problems, with danger and these attitudes can even be deadly for a number of reasons.

First, with the economic challenges we are facing, the traditional retirement of the boomers’ parents may not even be possible. Pension plans, public and private, are in trouble and may indeed implode. In future tips, we will discuss the potential of high inflation and even possible hyperinflation and what it may mean for retirement plans. It is not a pretty picture.

In the nineties, I remember seeing a newspaper story of a Russian woman in the freezing streets of Moscow selling a wool sweater in order to buy food for her evening meal. The Russian currency had collapsed and her pension had been eaten up by inflation.

In future tips, you will see how the thought “It can’t happen here” is one of the more dangerous ones we could hold.

Regardless of what inflation we have in the future, the demographics work against a rosy retirement. There are just too many boomers to be supported by pensions which, by and large, are Ponzi schemes anyway.

The scheme has been working because of the number of boomers who have been contributing to a much smaller group of their parents who have retired. The generation following the boomers is far fewer in numbers and will not likely take to massive increases in their pension contributions to support, not themselves, but to their older generation, particularly as they too have been programmed to believe that old people are less than useful.

Further, as boomers downsize their homes as retirees tend to do, they may find they are not getting the dollars they were hoping for. By sheer weight of numbers, they will flood the market and the law of supply and demand has not been repealed, last time I checked. More supply than demand normally means lower prices. We have already seen what the punster call “a slowdown” in real estate sales and anecdotally I hear of people taking their houses off the market to wait for prices to recover. They may be waiting in vain.

So, market forces may be conspiring to make traditional retirement impossible for the boomers.

This may be the best thing that can happen. Why? Stay tuned.

The Secret to Absolute Certainty

Written by joyenergyandhealth on . Posted in Blogs

                                        The Secret to Absolute Certainty

Sculpt Your Mind and Emotions to do Whatever it Takes to Achieve Your Goals

When you set a goal for yourself, do you hear a little voice inside that says you can’t do it? Is there a niggling feeling that causes you to doubt whether you can do it?

Is there an internal switch that can turn off that voice and turn on the afterburners of your desire?

Motivational speaker and author Tony Robbins tells us it may take an adjustment of just one or two millimeters to go from failure to incredible, outstanding mind-blowing success.  Just one or two millimeters!

The problem? Most people won’t do it. As we know from many sources: “Successful people do what failures won’t.”

Here’s how to separate yourself from the crowd.

Here’s how to train yourself to believe in yourself, 100%, by using your body and your voice.

Tony is clear that this is not affirmations. He calls it an “incantation.” In other words, this is done out loud with as much emotion as you can muster and moving your body. Here it is:

“I now command my subconscious mind to direct me in helping as many people as possible today to better their lives by giving me the strength, the emotions, the persuasion to do whatever it takes to get these people to change their lives NOW!"

And this is not done just once. In order to overwrite the inner voice that is telling us we can’t do it, we need to do this as much as possible, whenever possible until we change our physiology and this is the new “inner voice.”

Remember: “Successful people do what failures won’t.”

Further, when Tony talks about being just one or two millimeters off, he is also referring to our physiology. This is where posture comes into play. Watch this video to see exactly what he is talking about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0QwU5EJn7Q

As noted, “When two people meet, if there is rapport, the one who is most certain will always influence the other person!”

Therefore, don’t hope you will be in a good state, demand it of yourself!

Your mother was right when she said: “Sit up straight!”

First of all, it is actually easier to have good posture than poor posture. If you have been used to slouching, that may be hard to believe at first. Let’s think it through for a moment. Your head weighs how much? I am told about 25 pounds or just over 11 kilograms.

As an exercise, find something that weighs 25 pounds. If you have a 25-pound dumbbell, that will work. Otherwise, we can choose a briefcase and fill it with books. Be sure to weigh it on a scale to approximate 25 pounds. Even a large purse can be filled with 25 pounds of stuff.  Now, carry that around for an hour and notice what goes on in your body. You may find yourself changing the weight from one hand to the other, or even using two hands to carry it.  Then, imagine carrying that around for 16 hours. That’s what you are doing when you slouch. The head slouching forward means the muscles in your neck and upper back have to support the weight.

Alternatively, if you position your head so it is directly above the trunk of your body, your neck and upper back muscles don’t have to work as hard. Is this making sense?  Somehow, many of us have become “slouches” when it comes to posture. The subconscious belief may be that it is just easier to do that rather than try to be a soldier. Perhaps it is if we consider that a soldier may be required to tense all the muscles in the body to achieve a “military” posture or stance.

This is not about tensing. Rather, this is about positioning and then releasing those muscles or portions of muscles that are no longer required to keep the head from falling to the floor. (You may notice that some of these protocols start to blend into each other. Protocol #8, Posture, uses the same pro

Let’s do this:

Stand comfortably, feet about shoulder distance apart.  Imagine a silk cord at the top and back of your head, pulling your head up. This allows your spine to lengthen easily, effortlessly. It pulls your chin in a little as the silk cord gently eases the spine. Imagine the vertebrae being like pearls on a string, suspended by this silk cord.

Notice any tensions in the neck, upper back, lower back.  Allow those tensions to ease.  Rock gently back and forth, finding the spot where you are most centred, where you are using the least amount of muscle strength to hold yourself in place.  Do the same rocking, this time side to side, again finding the spot where you are using the least amount of muscle to hold yourself up.  Breathe gently.

Now, let’s practice how to keep this relaxed posture while walking.  Stay focused in the present moment by paying attention to the posture or stance and your breathing at the same time.  Stay totally relaxed or as relaxed as you can.  Imagine your right foot moving forward one step and your left following it.  Continuing to breathe and smile, gently allow your right foot to follow your imagination and allow your left foot to follow.  As you do so, feel your connection to the earth.  You may choose to continue for a few steps.

Notice how this feels.  The next time you are outside, you can choose to walk with this posture/stance and with this visualization of energy preceding your steps and of being connected to the earth as you walk.

Here are some other tips for posture: How to Create Good Posture

1.       As with anything else, we need good reasons to change long term entrenched habits. So, either a) copy and paste the 7 reasons for good posture (listed below) into a Word document, print them out and put them up where you can see them whenever and wherever you are sitting, or b) write “POSTURE!” on some post-it notes and stick them up.

2.       Pretend your body is held by a string. This is a tai-chi and martial arts technique and it works like a charm. Pretend that at the top back of your head, there is a titanium cord pulling the spine up. Notice as you do this, that your head naturally rises and your chin comes in a little bit. At the same time, focus on relaxing all your other muscles, especially the neck and surrounding muscles that may be chronically tight from constantly holding the head up. Give them time. This is a lifetime habit being changed, so be easy on them. Over time, you may find those muscles relaxing as they get the message that they no longer need to hold up this 25 pound weight.

3.       Get a head, shoulder and back massage. If you have always been in a bad posture, you will find that it’s hard to change your posture due to the hardening of your joints. A massage can loosen up those joints, which can make it easier to get into a better posture afterward.

4.       Eliminate bad habits that cultivate bad postures. This includes watching TV or reading while lying down, sleeping on your stomach and working under dim light, which results in slouching.

5.       Get a good quality chair, one that has good back support, including supporting the shoulders.

6.       Place your behind at the innermost edge of the chair. This helps set the right base for your posture. Many people have bad postures because they place their bottoms on the middle or towards the end of the chair. This causes them to lean forward or slouch forward and hunch since there is no support behind their backs to press against.

7.       Get a back cushion. (Optional) Put it at the back of your chair. Whenever you sit, make sure your back is wedging the cushion against the chair. Whenever you lean forward, the cushion will fall down which will act as a reminder to shift back into your proper posture.

8.       Ground both your feet when standing or sitting. This means having both feet planted flat on the floor and not resting your weight on a particular foot which is a very common habit. While sitting, try not to cross your legs. This helps to keep the upper part of our body straight.

9.       Invest in a good bed and pillow. Get a mattress that is firm and not too soft. The soft mattresses, that you sink into, may feel nice and comfy initially, but are not good for your back and posture. For your pillow, consider investing in an orthopedic pillow. The most common is contour pillows which are pillows that arch and support your head.

10.    Avoid carrying heavy items. The simpl act of carrying heavy items is bad for the shoulders and back. Over time, it can gradually lead to hunched shoulders and backs. If it’s not possible to reduce the load of things you carry around, you can consider getting a trolley bag or roller bag—these are really convenient and are becoming commonplace.

11.    Re exercise: the usual advice here is to work on strengthening the back muscles. The reality is your back muscles are probably already too strong! This was outlined in Mademoiselle Bertherat's wonderful little book The Body Has Its Reasons. The suggestion instead is to work on releasing the chronic tension most of us carry in the back muscles just as we do in the neck muscles. Yoga, tai-chi and stretching are all forms I have tried and can recommend. Good instruction is vital, so seek out someone who feels right for you.

12.    If you have a history of back pain and/or back injuries, it may be wise to get a professional assessment with a trusted chiropractor or physical therapist.

13.   Take regular breaks when sitting. I have a music CD loaded in my computer. When it stops playing, I stop, get up and get a drink of water or a snack.

14.    Take a long-term view. You are changing life-long habits. Be easy on yourself. Don’t expect miracles overnight. You may, however, see a miracle over time in more joy, energy and health. Especially if you combine good posture with laughing, smiling and breathing. (LSPB!)

7 reasons for focusing on good posture are:

1. It helps you to breathe deeper and better.

2. It Iincreases your concentration and thinking. More air, more oxygen. More oxygen, more brain food. More brain food leads to higher quality thoughts and ideas.

3. It helps to keep back pains away. Bad posture, over time, can contribute to risk of slipped disc, back aches, back pain, pressure inside your chest and poor blood circulation.

4. You expeience less fatigue and less stress. Think about it. Your head weighs about 25 pounds, more or less. If your head is not in its proper place resting easily directly above your body, then your muscles have to support it. Why do you think people get sore neck muscles? Because those neck muscles are supporting a head that is tilted forward, not sitting where it was designed to sit and has to be supported by neck muscles. Constant tension means constant stress. (And you have already heard or read about stress being rated as the number one killer.)

5. It supports the best possible muscle performance. Because of optimal biomechanics.

6. It creates optimal organ function.Good posture ensures your organs are aligned how they were designed and that can lead to them working more harmoniously together.

7. It improves your image.People with good posture look smarter and more attractive. Have you ever seen someone with a bad posture and felt the person seemed unkempt, even though the person has not said or done anything yet? On the flip side, someone with a good posture naturally exudes an aura of assertiveness and appeal.

Your mission for this week, should you decide to accept: Do the Posture Protocol.

Time Commitment: 1 minute twice a day. Total 2 minutes. You may choose to walk with this focus, attention and intention. You are walking anyway, so this does not take any extra time.
