Researcher, author and radio host Eldon Taylor offers solutions…some of them free.

 

From his book Mind Programming: “What you’ll learn will both shock and horrify you. Tweaking your psyche has become big business. Never again will you be able to ignore the truth—your very thoughts are not your own. (My bolding)

 

Taylor uncovers why affirmations don’t work for everyone.

 

Take for example the affirmation “I am good.”

 

Our subconscious belief structure may respond with: “Yeah? Good for what? Good for nothing!”

 

Taylor’s solution?

 

Positive subliminal affirmations in the positive on one channel of a stereo recording..Then a suggestion in reverse on the other channel.

 

Taylor says this is aimed at the two different hemispheres of the brain. And in a language that each hemisphere understands and responds positively to.

 

This helps reprogram the negative “inner talk” in our subconscious.

The Importance of Doing Nothing Mastery Newsletter June 14, 2017

Sometimes, it is good to do absolutely nothing.

 

Arthur De Vany is 79 year young. His “numbers” are as he were a much younger man.

 

In his book The New Evolutionary Diet, he outlines his practices.

 

I got interested when I read The London Times interview when he was 71. At that time, he had the testosterone levels of an 18-year-old.

 

That caught my interest.

 

In a nutshell, he eats much like hunter-gatherers did over 10,000 years ago. Very little modern food. Eating on no schedule.

 

Hunters would gorge when there had been a successful hunt. And then not eat for longer stretches.

 

He also exercises on no particular schedule. Much like those ancestors, he does intense spurts. And then can go days without any exercise.

 

In the book, he says how he plans his work around periods of doing nothing.

 

Nothing meaning not watching TV, reading and not even meditating.

 

Just meandering walks with his wife or laying in the grass with his dog and watching the clouds.

 

He claims this is very important. Especially in today’s rush-rush world where we always seem too busy.

 

When was the last time you did nothing?

 

Would you ever consider building your schedule around doing nothing?

It’s Wednesday afternoon and I’m not feeling well.

 

Can I make it tomorrow for our annual cruise?

 

Every year we get together on KL’s 34-foot cabin cruiser.

 

We cruise the Gulf Islands of British Columbia ending up on Saltspring.

 

I’ve known these guys for over half a century.

 

I joke that we eat a lot and drink a little.

 

The opposite of what we did as youngsters.

 

It’s a trip I look forward to eagerly every year.

 

I once had to skip it because I had “pink eye” and did not want to infect the others.

 

This Wednesday I felt so horrible, I just wanted to crawl into bed.

 

But…I have written about the healing power of connection, so…I made the effort to get there.

 

As soon as I got in the car with FJ to share the ride up-island, I already felt better.

 

By the time, the four of us shoved off in the Sea Holly, I was again feeling fantastic as I do every time.

 

I talked to another buddy about this healing experience. Was it a fluke?

 

He told me of his experience in Afghanistan. He was there before the war with the Soviets.

 

Five days of being really sick. Couldn’t shake it. He got dragged to a party at the British Embassy.

 

Connecting with others, enjoying food and drink and what happened?

 

His illness totally left him and did not return.

 

It’s nice to read and hear about the healing power of connection.

 

It’s fantastic to experience the true power of it.

 

FYI: We did overeat. Even voluminous amounts of ice cream, which is not on my food radar…ever.

 

Despite that, I felt healthier and stronger after trip.

 

Have you had a similar experience?

 

Do you make time to connect with others regularly?

 

I suspect connection with others is a daily need.

 

Much like we need Vitamin C every day, we need Vitamin C for Connection daily as well.

Loving Yourself First. Here’s How Mastery Newsletter May 31, 2017

This may sound too simple.

 

Or you may find it quite challenging.

 

It is a simple instruction:

 

Look in the mirror, look into your own eyes and say to yourself:

 

“I love you, I really, really love you.”

 

That’s it.  Louise Hay taught me this one.

 

Thank you, Louise. You are an angel of light.

 

Louise also says many folks find this a great challenge.

 

For whatever reason, we have been taught that self-love is a negative.

 

But, let’s go through a little exercise in logic if we might.

 

Would you agree that we all want love?

 

Yet, how can we receive it if we do not love ourselves?

 

I can’t remember who said this, “We can only feel the love of others to the extent that we love ourselves.”

 

Said another way, it is by loving ourselves fully and deeply that we open up the space inside ourselves

that allows others to love us, that allows the love of other to fill our beings.

 

The first step in feeling love, of falling in love, is falling in love with ourselves.

 

Your mission for this week is to, first thing in the morning and last thing before you retire to bed:

 

Look in the mirror, look into your own eyes and say to yourself:

“I love you, I really, really love you.”

 

You may choose to take turns looking first into one eye and then the other.

Lessons From A Musical Journey Into Leadership

 

Richard Kunz is a jazz musician and leader of a 5-piece combo.

 

He and the combo jazzed up our evening dances at a recent Toastmasters Conference in Vancouver.

 

The workshop he and his combo led on leadership was beyond jazz.

 

Leadership Lessons from Richard Kuhn’s workshop:

 

 

It is important for a leader to lead AND follow.

 

First, the leader lays down 8 bars of music. Then he throws it to another member of the combo who then improvises within that structure.

 

Lesson: A leader provides the initial idea, but then lets someone else in the team come up with his idea(s). In fact, everyone in the combo (team) gets to “riff” off the initial idea and subsequent ideas.

 

Outcome: The sum becomes more than its parts. Everyone has a say and the overall piece of music is much more than one musician (leader) could do by himself.

 

 

It is important for a leader to listen.

 

When a player contributes their 8 bars of improvisation, the leader and other combo members (team members) actively listen. When the leader again contributes, it is with a new, refreshed and invigorated spirit. Same for other combo (team) members.

 

Lesson: Only by active listening and hearing the others’ contributions can the leader fashion a new, as yet unheard 8 bars of music.

 

Outcome: The music takes on a life of its own. There are twists and turns that did not exist in the universe until a few moments ago.

 

 

Living in the Eternal “Now.”

 

Only by being open to what is happening at this moment, as scary as it may seem, can the leader hope to have his team create something new and valuable. The music is never the same as in any previous performance. Nor will it be the same in future performances. All that has happened in the past few moments (days, months, years) influences the present moment. But all magic happens in the “now.”

 

Lesson: Only by being in the now can the leader and other combo (team) members allow that magic.

 

Outcome: Combo (team) members feel validated by having their contributions listened to, encouraged and added to.

 

 

Stepping out of Ego.

 

No place in jazz for ego. It only creates discord. A leader allows combo (team) members to lead them for a while.

 

Lesson: By recognizing that he doesn’t have all the answers and stepping out of the way, the leader shows humility.

 

Outcome: This stance encourages and supports other combo (team) members to reach down inside and share their most intimate selves…allows them to create a joyful sound. The team can feel they belong in the team and that, together, they can and do achieve above and beyond.

 

 

It Takes Courage.

 

An insecure leader may try to have things all his own way. Team members may follow, but they may also not “buy in” fully. The leader may not get solutions other than their own.

 

The leader’s ideas may be completely changed by the end of the process. There may be very little left of their original idea. Yet the outcome may be far greater.

 

Only if a leader has courage to let go of their idea(s) can a greater idea or outcome emerge.

 

This can take great courage. There is a saying that might apply here: you can get a lot done if you don’t care who gets the credit. A leader is willing to have others shine in the spotlight.

In the mid 90s, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Kaiser Permanente discovered a new risk for disease.

 

Exposure to this risk dramatically  increased the risk of 7 out of 10 of the leading causes of death.

 

In high doses, this exposure reduces life expectancy by 20 years.

 

What is this new threat?

 

Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACE.

 

17,500 adults were given a questionnaire about their exposure to these events in childhood:

 

  • Physical, mental or sexual abuse
  • Physical or emotional neglect
  • Incarceration
  • Divorce or parental separation
  • Domestic violence

 

Each yes to one of those events produced one point on the ACE score.

 

They found that 67% had at least one point.

 

12.6% or 1 out of 8 had 4 points or more.

 

The higher the score, the worse the health outcome in adulthood.

 

For those with 4 or more points, their chances of COPD was 2.5 times more likely.

 

2.5 times more likely to have hepatitis.

 

4.5 times more likely to have depression.

 

12 times more likely to attempt suicide.

 

With 7 or more points, 3 times likelihood of cancer and 3.5 times more likely to have ischemic heart disease (the #1 killer).

 

According to pediatrician Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, we now know how ACE affects developing bodies.

 

ACE affects the nucleus accumbens part of the brain which regulates substance dependency.

 

ACE inhibits the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for impulse control.

 

MRI scans show ACE also affects the amygdala. This is the part of the brain responsible for the fight of flight response.

 

Dr. Robert Block, former president of the American Academy of Pediatricians, says: “Adverse Childhood Experiences are the single greatest unaddressed public health threat facing our nation today.”

 

Children are highly sensitive because of their still developing brains.

ACE affects their immune system and their hormonal system. It even changes how DNA is read and transcribed.

 

Dr. Burke Harris indicates this cuts across all demographics.

 

But somehow most folks feel this applies to poor neighbourhoods.

 

The science tells us otherwise.

 

The study itself was done on 70% Caucasians. 70% of the study subjects were college educated.

 

This means it is you and I.

 

Little is being done, she tells us. The good news is that we have made huge progress on things like cigarette smoking, lead poisoning HIV infections and even PCBs.

 

So, there is reason to be optimistic.

 

What can you and I do?

 

I suspect it is up to each individual. We can’t wait for governmental response. Sometimes governments move at the speed of glaciers.

 

You and I can choose to use stress release protocols.

 

There are many.

 

I use Laughter Yoga, meditation, exercise and food choices among other things.

When you enter your home by the front door, what is the first thing you see?

 

Does it spark joy?

 

My friend GG is a professional organizer.

 

She helps people clean out the “stuff” in their lives that doesn’t serve them anymore.

 

One professional client of hers almost turned her away at the door.

 

She was feeling overwhelmed with work and tasks at home as well.

 

She just didn’t feel she had the energy to go through all the “stuff.”

 

She had made the appointment, but…

 

GG’s winning smile did the trick and they got going.

 

By the end, the client was laughing.

 

She shared that she felt much lighter and more joyous.

 

Back to your front entranceway.

 

GG says this one tip creates joy for her every day.

 

What is the first thing you see on entering your home?

 

It is also the last thing you see when leaving.

 

My spring cleaning guideline has always been a two question affair.

 

  1. If I have not used it for a year, why do I still have it. In other words, is it USEFUL? And

 

2). If it is not useful, is it beautiful?

 

If it did not meet either of those criteria, it was eligible for tossing out, selling or giving away.

 

GG’s twist on that is: It might be beautiful, but DOES IT SPARK JOY INSIDE YOU?

 

Wow, what a revelation.

 

So she took down a picture in her entryway that was beautiful, but had some negative associations.

 

She replaced it with another picture that caused her to smile. It sparked joy!

 

Another challenge she faced is not unique.

 

I know because I have faced this in my spring cleaning sessions.

 

Another client was hanging on to dinner plates that she never used.

 

Those plates were her mother’s. Mom used them on special occasions. It was hard to let go of them because of positive associations.

 

GG offered some elegant solutions.

 

Take a picture of one of them. Frame it and put it in a place of honour in the home.

 

Or, keep one plate and place it as a memento of mom in a special place.

 

 

The reward for spring cleaning is lightness of being.

 

Just like GG’s professional woman, you may find letting go of “stuff” that is not useful and does not spark joy, you may find more joy.

Turning Negatives into Positives. Mastery Newsletter May 3, 2017

“The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune…” to quote Shakespeare. We all have times/moments that test our resolve.

 

It could be physical such as injuries or illnesses. It could be emotional upsets. Arguments with spouses, bosses yelling at us and so on.

 

These can cause stress. If unresolved, that stress is unhealthy. Continuous stress means our immune system is functioning at a low level. It means also our digestion is impaired.

 

If we are not digesting properly, the nutrients in our food may not make it to the inside of the cells. Cells must receive the nutrients or we starve our energy reserves. The energy we need to enjoy life fully.

 

Much has been written about how many illnesses are stress related. Think of someone you know who succumbs to colds and flus easily.

 

How can we turn a negative event into a positive?

 

Try this.

 

 

Think of a stressful event in the last 7 days.

 

Now, cry about it, whine about it. Feel how unfair it is that this happened to you.

 

Really, truly allow yourself to fully feel how awful it is in the body. Moan, sob, let it go.

 

Here is a secret. We can’t feel boundless joy unless we also allow the painful feelings.

 

The good news is by allowing the pain to fully suffuse the body, we can allow it to pass through.

 

Then, laugh.

 

Use whatever means at your disposal for laughing.

 

Because I have been doing Laughter Yoga for years, it is much easier now. I also make it a point to laugh for a minimum of 10-15 minutes daily.

 

That’s it.

 

Feel the pain, voice it, moan, sob, cry.

 

Let it turn into laughter. Laugh for 10-15 minutes.

 

If it is a challenge, try laughing babies on the World Wide Interweb. Babies are little gurus amongst us. They know how to push our joy buttons.

 

You may consider Laughter Yoga too.

 

The first Sunday of May every year is World Laughter Day. Find one in your community.

 

Laughter Yoga clubs abound now. Over 17,000 of them in 100 countries.

 

You can find Skype laughter clubs as well.

 

You only have your pain to lose.

 

Whatever method you use, releasing stress by laughing is a time tested way to improve health.

Connection: The Need for Self Expression. Mastery Newsletter April 26, 2017

We need to connect with others.

 

It is essential to our health and well-being.

 

This need shows up as a desire to express ourselves.

 

We need to be heard.

 

Yet, we are stymied.

 

As children, well meaning parents and others may have taught us to not be so noisy.

 

“Children should be seen, not heard.”

 

The creative, rambunctious and wild 6-year-old eventually gets put on hold.

 

We learn to censor what we say and how we say it to conform to arbitrary standards.

 

Thus, we limit ourselves. We are the ones who become our own worst enemies.

 

Not expressing ourselves fully.

 

This is why Toastmasters exists.

 

Often thought of as a place to learn public speaking, Toastmasters is much more.

 

It is a place to learn self expression, yes.

 

But also a safe space to face our deepest fears.

 

For many, that is the fear of public speaking.

 

Facing our deepest fears empowers us.

 

Facing our fears, we allow ourselves to bring forth and show to the world who we truly are.

 

Showing our vulnerabilities, we connect deeply with others.

 

This connection is therapeutic. It is healing.

 

It is why the sense of community with others is critical to our health.

 

It is what is a critical missing element in modern society.

 

It is what helps to provide a sense of safety in this often turbulent world.

 

What groups or clubs do you belong to that allows for that sense of safety?

 

What can you do to connect more deeply with others in your groups?

A journalist sets out to debunk “The Iceman.”

 

Wim Hof has numerous records for cold exposure and other things.

 

The journalist, Scott Carney, finds out Hof is for real.

 

Soon Carney is climbing a mountain in Poland…in winter…in his shorts…and sweating!

 

Here is his story. (Bolding is mine.)

 

 

Humans have an innate ability to adapt to the environment around us.

 

By Avoiding Temperature Extremes, You Forgo Health Benefits

 

 

“What this means is that we have all of these muscles in our circulatory system that just aren’t getting exercise … [T]hat guy with the gym body … may look physically healthy, but actually [may] have a fairly degraded arterial system, just because he hasn’t stimulated it. We need this external stimulation to live a full human life and really use all of our biology.

 

There are serious autoimmune impacts with this — treatments for diabetes, obesity and all of these things that are important because we used to think that human health relied on diet and exercise … But what this book uncovers … [is] that there’s actually a third pillar. The third pillar is the environment … If you ignore it, you’re not doing your biology any favors.”

 

By regularly exposing yourself to cold, you build up a mitochondria-rich tissue very similar to brown fat called beige fat. Beige fat is recruited through your white fat, which can then be used to heat your body and maintain a more active-passive metabolism. Indeed, the conclusion I reached after many decades of studying health is that burning fat as your primary fuel is the goal.

“Western civilization has given us this enticing option of being comfortable all the time. We just think, because we’re so technologically advanced, that comfort should be available at the flip of a switch. But that’s actually undermining who we are as people and leading to things like obesity, weak circulatory systems and … autoimmune diseases,” Carney says.

 

The good news is, we all have this latent capacity that we can tap into and relearn. It went underground, so to speak, but it didn’t disappear. Carney developed remarkable endurance to cold in a single week. He also lost seven pounds of fat in that same time.

With those warnings in place, the breathing method Carney recommends can be briefly described as follows: First, you take 30 to 40 deep controlled breaths. This will decrease the carbon dioxide (CO2) in your system and increase your oxygen (O2) saturation up to 100 percent. Next, after a complete out-breath where you’ve emptied your lungs as completely as possible, you then hold your breath until you get to that point where you need to gasp for air.

 

“By doing that, you’re interacting with an autonomic system in your body, which is where the gasp reflex is. You’re telling your body that you should have some control over this system,” Carney explains. “It’s the same thing that you do in a cold shower when you’re telling yourself not to shiver. It’s the same skill of becoming mentally strong over an autonomic reflex.

 

These two methods work on different systems, parasympathetic and sympathetic systems, in the body. What that does is give you more resistance in the cold and has this autonomic trick, this autonomic ability to influence your immune system down the road, which is incredibly useful.”

 

….Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie also uses yogic breathing for cold resistance and mental strength. Ice bathing, sauna and the combination of the two also have a long history and tradition in Russia and Scandinavian countries. So, what Hof is teaching is nothing new. Many of these techniques have been around for a long time. What makes Hof particularly interesting is his openness to investigation and testing, giving us a deeper insight into our human potential.

The darkness descends.

 

No one knows how dark it can become.

 

Will the world we know survive?

 

Will we survive?

 

It is easy to feel helpless, overwhelmed, sad.

 

Who can be blamed for worrying?

 

It is now, more than ever, an uncertain world.

 

An uncertain future.

 

Dear reader: it was ever thus.

 

In the 1950s (I date myself now),

this same fear was stalking the land.

 

The “Free World” as we called it then,

was deathly afraid of the Russkies raining nuclear bombs on us.

 

The US and Canada set up the Distant Early Warning (DEW) sites all across the arctic.

 

This was to give us a few minutes, maybe hours, of warning.

 

If the Russkies (the Soviets) send those warplanes,

we might have time to evacuate.

 

To where, was not certain.

 

My grade 5 teacher gave us a map of Vancouver with escape routes out of the city.

 

Where were we supposed to go then?

 

Across North America, bomb shelters were being built.

 

They were stocked with supplies for a few weeks.

 

There was a palpable fear.

 

You could cut if with a knife.

 

That same fear is in the air today.

 

Today, though, we know more.

 

We know that peace begins inside each person.

 

When we are in our “reptilian” brain, in fear,

we make decisions based on emotion. (Bomb them!)

 

When we release the fear,

we allow our higher selves to dominate and make decisions based on love.

 

Yes, at times, the decision needs to be to use physical action to defend ourselves or our family.

 

As the Japanese martial art of Aikido teaches,

that can be done while centred.

 

While there is a tempest outside of us

anger, fear, attack, etc.) we can react calmly.

 

This is where happiness comes in.

 

“If you can keep your head while others are losing theirs, you’ll be a man, my son.”

-Rudyard Kipling paraphrased. (forgive the obvious sexism…he was a man of his times)

 

This is the challenge today.

 

Staying calm, staying happy, loving action

in the maelstrom we find ourselves in today.

 

I do Laughter Yoga.

 

I do the Iceman protocols, including meditation,

yoga, breathing and cold exposure.

 

As well, I work to extend love through service.

 

I ensure I have community.

 

Differing tribes: my family, friends, my Laughter Yoga friends, Toastmasters.

in love with life while witnessing today’s storms?

This is an important meditation practice.

It is simple. Helps to relieve pain.

With this, we train the mind to notice that something we have experienced is no more.

At the end of a breath, notice that the breath is over.

 

At the end of a thought, notice that the thought is gone.

At the end of an emotion, any emotion, joy, anger, whatever, notice it is gone.

“If you have a lot of mental sentences, you’ll have a lot of mental periods—full stops, Gones.” –Joy on Demand, Chade-Meng Tan

When we do this, Meng says, the mind realizes that “Whatever is subject to origination is all subject to cessation.”

This practice supports the ability to see that “…self is a process, not an object…Recognizing this, our sense of self becomes delightfully fluid and we gain a joyful sense of lightness in life.”

Sent in 1944, three years before his writing of “1984”, to Noel Willmett, who had asked “whether totalitarianism, leader-worship etc. are really on the up-grade” given “that they are not apparently growing in [England] and the USA”:

“I must say I believe, or fear, that taking the world as a whole these things are on the increase. Hitler, no doubt, will soon disappear, but only at the expense of strengthening (a) Stalin, (b) the Anglo-American millionaires and (c) all sorts of petty fuhrers of the type of de Gaulle. All the national movements everywhere, even those that originate in resistance to German domination, seem to take non-democratic forms, to group themselves round some superhuman fuhrer (Hitler, Stalin, Salazar, Franco, Gandhi, De Valera are all varying examples) and to adopt the theory that the end justifies the means. Everywhere the world movement seems to be in the direction of centralised economies which can be made to ‘work’ in an economic sense but which are not democratically organised and which tend to establish a caste system. With this go the horrors of emotional nationalism and a tendency to disbelieve in the existence of objective truth because all the facts have to fit in with the words and prophecies of some infallible fuhrer. Already history has in a sense ceased to exist, ie. there is no such thing as a history of our own times which could be universally accepted, and the exact sciences are endangered as soon as military necessity ceases to keep people up to the mark. Hitler can say that the Jews started the war, and if he survives that will become official history. He can’t say that two and two are five, because for the purposes of, say, ballistics they have to make four. But if the sort of world that I am afraid of arrives, a world of two or three great superstates which are unable to conquer one another, two and two could become five if the fuhrer wished it. That, so far as I can see, is the direction in which we are actually moving, though, of course, the process is reversible.

As to the comparative immunity of Britain and the USA. Whatever the pacifists etc. may say, we have not gone totalitarian yet and this is a very hopeful symptom. I believe very deeply, as I explained in my book The Lion and the Unicorn, in the English people and in their capacity to centralise their economy without destroying freedom in doing so. But one must remember that Britain and the USA haven’t been really tried, they haven’t known defeat or severe suffering, and there are some bad symptoms to balance the good ones. To begin with there is the general indifference to the decay of democracy. Do you realise, for instance, that no one in England under 26 now has a vote and that so far as one can see the great mass of people of that age don’t give a damn for this? Secondly there is the fact that the intellectuals are more totalitarian in outlook than the common people. On the whole the English intelligentsia have opposed Hitler, but only at the price of accepting Stalin. Most of them are perfectly ready for dictatorial methods, secret police, systematic falsification of history etc. so long as they feel that it is on ‘our’ side. Indeed the statement that we haven’t a Fascist movement in England largely means that the young, at this moment, look for their fuhrer elsewhere. One can’t be sure that that won’t change, nor can one be sure that the common people won’t think ten years hence as the intellectuals do now. I hope they won’t, I even trust they won’t, but if so it will be at the cost of a struggle. If one simply proclaims that all is for the best and doesn’t point to the sinister symptoms, one is merely helping to bring totalitarianism nearer.

You also ask, if I think the world tendency is towards Fascism, why do I support the war. It is a choice of evils—I fancy nearly every war is that. I know enough of British imperialism not to like it, but I would support it against Nazism or Japanese imperialism, as the lesser evil. Similarly I would support the USSR against Germany because I think the USSR cannot altogether escape its past and retains enough of the original ideas of the Revolution to make it a more hopeful phenomenon than Nazi Germany. I think, and have thought ever since the war began, in 1936 or thereabouts, that our cause is the better, but we have to keep on making it the better, which involves constant criticism.

This is one of the greatest sources of joy in life.

Most of the time, I am not feeling pain.

Noticing the absence of pain is not natural though.

We have to train for this.

“We are hardwired to notice the arising of a phenomenon—such as sight or sound for example—we sense if, perceive it, cognize it, and then thoughts arise out of it. In other words, the mind is stimulated to participate in that phenomenon.”

-Joy on Demand, Chade-Meng Tan.

We are not hardwired to notice the lack of a stimulus. We have to bring awareness to it.

This awareness can be trained to be a mental habit.

This is how: Notice if you have any pain. Then notice where you are not in pain.

Remind yourself of that. If any joy arises from that thought, attend to that joy!

Example, if you have a backache, ask if you have a toothache. If not, say “I don’t have a toothache right now.”

You can notice lack of emotional pain too.

“I am not suffering the pain of hatred right now.”

Attend to any joy that arises.

The more you do it, the easier it becomes. The more it becomes a habit.

Scammers use our fears to dominate, intimidate and manipulate us.

 

If we drop our fears (easier said than done), scammers have no leverage over us.

 

These fears are subconscious. That’s why it’s easier said than done.

 

Fears lodge when we are traumatized to lesser and greater degrees.

 

The trauma can be as simple as someone cutting us off in traffic. That creates a rush of adrenaline.

 

Unless we take a few moments to release it, that trauma lodges as muscular tension.

 

Animals shake off their traumas by trembling for a few minutes.

 

We humans have become used to not shake things off…certainly not in public.

 

Laughter works. I use it all the time when a driver does something silly.

 

Trembling works. Deep breathing. Smiling. Visualizations (pull over for that one).

 

What do you do to release tensions created by fright inducing situations?

 

 

This article was triggered by an alert issued by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Scammers have been targeting seniors recently in Canada.

 

When you read this article, just substitute your own tax authority. IRS in the USA, Inland Revenue in the UK and so on.

DON’T GET SCAMMED.

CRA SCAMS INCREASING

 

CRA Issues Alert:

More reports are coming in about scammers posing as CRA agents on the phone.

CRA will never ask for your personal information on the phone.

 

Scammers have been asking taxpayers for info such as social insurance number, credit card number, bank account number, or passport number.

 

Sometimes the scammer sends the taxpayer to a fake CRA website. There you are to enter some personal info to identify yourself. Don’t go to the site and definitely don’t click in there.

 

If CRA calls you, you can ask for there phone number and call them back. Check directory listing to make sure the phone number is an actual CRA number.

 

To identify communications not from the CRA, be aware of these guidelines.

If you have signed up for online mail from CRA, they will do the following:

* Send a registration confirmation email to the address you provided for online mail service for an individual or a business; and

* Send an email to the address you provided to notify you when new online mail is available to view in the CRA’s secure online services portal.

 

CRA will NOT send you an email with a link and ask you to divulge personal or financial information;

* ask for personal information of any kind by email or text message.

* request payments by prepaid credit cards.

* give taxpayer information to another person, unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer.

* leave personal information on an answering machine.

 

Exception

The exception is if you call the CRA to request a form or a link for

specific information, a CRA agent will forward the information you

are requesting to your email during the telephone call.

This is the only circumstance in which the CRA will send an email

containing links.

 

When in doubt, ask yourself the following:

* Did I sign up to receive online mail with CRA?

* Did I provide my email address on my income tax and benefit return to receive mail online?

* Am I expecting more money from the CRA?

* Does this sound too good to be true?

* Is the requester asking for information I would not provide in my tax return?

* Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me?

 

How to protect yourself from identity theft (from CRA website).

* Never provide personal information by email.

The CRA does not ask you to provide personal information by email.

* Be suspicious if you are ever asked to pay taxes or fees

to the CRA on lottery or sweepstakes winnings. You do not

have to pay taxes or fees on these types of winnings. These

requests are scams.

* Keep your access codes, user ID, passwords, and PINs

secret. Make sure they are different for each website too!

* Keep your address current with all government

departments and agencies.

* Choose your tax preparer carefully! Make sure you

choose someone you trust and check their references. Always review your return, agree with the content before filing, and follow up to make sure you receive your notice of assessment, since it contains important financial and personal information that belongs to you.

* Before supporting any charity, use the CRA website at www.cra.gc.ca/charities to find out if the

charity is registered and get more information on the way it does business.

* Be careful before you click on links in any email you receive. Some criminals may be using a technique known as phishing to steal your personal information when you click on the link.

* Caller ID is a useful function. However, the information displayed can be altered by criminals. Never use only the displayed information to confirm the identity of the caller whether it be an individual, a company or a government entity.

* Protect your social insurance number. Don’t use it as a piece of ID and never reveal it to anyone unless you are certain the person asking for it is legally entitled to that information. If an organization asks for your social insurance number, ask if it is legally required to collect it, and if not, offer other forms of ID. CRA can ask for SIN as can any institution likely to pay you income. This would include banks, mutual funds and whole life insurance policies.

* Pay attention to your billing cycle and ask about any missing account statements or suspicious transactions.

* Shred unwanted documents or store them in a secure place. Make sure that

documents with your name and SIN are secure.

* Immediately report lost or stolen credit or debit cards.

* Carry only the ID you need.

* Do not write down any passwords or carry them with you.

* Ask a trusted neighbour to pick up your mail when you are away or ask

that a hold be placed on delivery.

* Consider a password protected password list.

Dealing with Disappointment. Mastery Newsletter March 15, 2017

It’s not so easy.

 

The Toastmasters International Speaking Competition was underway. I had entered. I really hoped and expected to win at the first stage, the club level.

 

I put a lot of work into prepping. I whittled down my talk to ensure I would stay within the seven and a half minutes allotted. Going over means elimination.

 

I knew I had to have a strong opening and closing. A good story arc was essential, tying the concepts together.

 

I included a story. Us humans love stories.

 

I tried for some humour and did get a chuckle or two. Good.

 

Audience involvement. Had to work at that, but got some of that too.

 

My topic was “Super-Motivation.”

 

Recently I had learned that dopamine is the hormone of motivation. So I had great material to work with.

 

I also knew I had to up my game with more animation. While I can be expressive with my voice, I sometimes don’t use gestures and facial expression enough.

 

Had to smile too. I look quite dour when I don’t smile.

 

As you will note, I took a lot of pains to fine tune this thing.

 

Truth be told, I thought I would ace it.

 

Not to be.

 

The winning talk was incredibly good. About a Volkswagen being decimated and torn apart in an automatic car wash. Superb delivery. Got tons of laughs. He really deserved it.

 

But…I WAS disappointed. I had so hoped to win.

 

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn’s quote came to mind. In reaching to become a millionaire, it is not about what you achieve, but about who you become in making the effort.

 

I certainly learned a lot by entering the contest. AND I now have the base of my signature talk which I can use going forward.

 

That’s a win.

 

When we compete, we sharpen our skills. Definite win there.

 

Still…

 

I woke up in the middle of the night feeling the emotion. Perhaps it was resentment.

 

I am grateful to have some techniques that helped out.

 

Deep and slow breathing.

 

Directing my intention to release the jaw muscles and the eye muscles. That always is great.

 

Plus allowing the body to tremble.

 

When we face disappointment, I find it useful to consider that it is trauma, emotional trauma.

 

One does not want to hang on to that.

 

My body has picked up the ability to release it by trembling. See David Berceli’s work with the Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE)

I use laughter a lot to release trauma. 3 am was not a great time for it, so these other techniques helped a lot.

 

Lesson: It’s not about “getting over it.”

 

Often that means burying the trauma. It can mean the muscular tension remains. No sense carrying that kind of weight.

 

It’s more about releasing. Allowing it to have full sway and moving through the emotional and physical bodies.

Motivation takes hormones.

Yes, there is a physical basis to motivation.

You can get motivated by a motivational speaker.

But how long does it last?

And anyway, that is motivation from the outside.

How can we get motivated from the inside?

 

By generating a hormone called dopamine.

Dopamine is a molecule that neurons release to communicate with each other.

Some research shows that high levels of dopamine makes us feel good.

Great! I will just get a prescription for it, yeah?

 

Prescriptions Don’t Work

A friend of mine actually did that.

He was depressed. The Doc gave him a dopamine prescription.

You should have heard him on the phone. A man transformed.

I was so happy to hear him with such joy on the phone…for the first time in a long time.

He was touting the benefits of this drug he was taking. I could not believe it.

“Man, I feel so good. I look forward to every day now.

I enjoy everything so much more.”

Not much later, I talked to him again.

He was depressed again. Couldn’t figure out why.

He was still taking the dopamine as prescribed.

Here’s what I think happened.

What we need is for the dopamine to hit the reward centre in the brain.

(FYI: The reward centre is called the Nucleus Accumbens.

You can use that to impress your friends at your next party.)

 

The Brain’s Reward Centre

When my friend took the oral dopamine, it went everywhere in the body.

It hit the reward centre alright.

But over time, its effect was dampened.

Taking dopamine orally doesn’t target the reward centre.

To do that, to hit the bull’s eye, we need to generate dopamine internally.

 

How to Generate Dopamine Internally

How do we do that?

Exercise is one way.

You’ve heard of the “runner’s high?”

Exercising vigorously floods the body with “feel good” hormones.

We’re talking dopamine and endorphins.

 

Generating Motivation

That feel good factor is where we find the motivation as well.

“Researchers have shown that it (dopamine) regulates motivation,

causing individuals to initiate and persevere to obtain something either positive or negative.”

Exercise Targets Your Reward Centre

But, and here is the critical difference, exercise actually targets the reward centre.

Exercise is like the bow. The arrow is dopamine. The target is the Nucleus Accumbens.

 

You Can Get Addicted, in a Good Way

Now, be careful. You can get addicted to this.

In fact, addictions are thought be, at least in part, to this release of dopamine in the reward centre of the brain.

You may know some folks who are addicted to running. Or to other types of exercise.

Drug addictions might be attributed to this release of dopamine too.

But, if you had to choose an addiction, which would you rather have?

Drugs or exercise?

 

More Good News

You can get the “Dopaminergic upregulation to the Nucleus Accumbens” another way.

 

Laughter!

A minimum of 10-15 minutes of laughter generates the same flood of feel good hormones as the runner’s high.

Plus, it’s a lot of fun to laugh together. Maybe more so than solitary running.

How to Avoid Terror. Mastery Newsletter February 22, 2017

We hear so much about terrorism these days.

 

Hearing so much about it actually CAUSES terror.

 

Neuro-Linguistic-Programming (NLP) gives us clues.

 

In order for us to understand what the word means we have to access the meaning inside ourselves.

 

Whenever we hear the word, our body-mind system goes to previous experiences with the word.

 

It accesses previous memories. Previous experiences with terror are brought up in our internal “movie screen.”

 

Critical point: There is no choice in the matter.

 

We HAVE to do this to understand the word and the sentence in which it is used. It is automatic. Not escapable.

 

Therefore, every time we hear, see, experience the word, we are thrown into terror.

 

Fear springs up.

 

This is useful to those who would sell us stuff.

 

This could be advertisers selling us consumer goods.

 

It could also be politicians selling us their election promises.

 

The ones who are most highly skilled at this are the ones who trigger our fears.

 

Advertisers cause us to vote with our dollars in the marketplace.

 

Politicians cause us to vote in the polling booth.

 

The rational mind cannot override this process. Even though we know about it.

 

The most highly skilled learn how to “appeal to our emotions.”

 

How to Escape this Trap.

 

Not with the rational mind.

 

There are some steps we can take, based on reason.

 

One is to limit or eliminate exposure to news.

 

Those who have done so, report more peace and calm in their lives.

 

Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

 

This dynamic fear rears its head when we try to divorce ourselves from daily consumption of news.

 

If it’s really important, someone will tell me.

 

If you try it, you may find this to be the case.

 

When 911 happened, don’t you think someone would have told you?

 

Full disclosure. I am not there yet. I kinda enjoy news. Hmph.

 

What I no longer do though, is TV news. It is particularly insidious. Sneaks into the subconscious and causes immediate angst.

 

If you choose to try this out, a step by step process is likely called for.

 

Cutting down first.

 

At the edges. That is to say, don’t watch TV news late at night or first thing in the morning. Those are the times when we are most vulnerable.

 

From there, we can slowly reduce and eventually eliminate much and most, if not all, exposure to fear inducing input.
