Common Sense Is Not Enough Anymore

 

The world has become so complex, it is as if there are hidden minefields all over the place. These minefields contain silent mines. If you “step” on them, it may take months, years or decades for the bombs to “explode.”

 

Without knowledge of these minefields, we can be triggering all kinds of conditions and “dis-eases” for ourselves and our families.

 

The Good News Story: PCBs are decreasing in our bodies

 

Take PCB’s for example. Many may have heard about Polychlorinated Biphenyls which were widely used as coolants in electrical applications until they were banned because of their toxicity. You can read about PCBs here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polychlorinated_biphenyl

 

This is a good news story in that PCBs are now decreasing in humans. Testing has shown that children have less of it in their bodies than do adults. (source: SLOW DEATH BY RUBBER DUCK by Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie)

 

The Bad News Story: PBDEs, a “cousin” of PCBs, have the same toxicity and are INCREASING in our bodies.

 

However, there is another story. This one about PBDEs or polybrominated diphenyls. PDBEs are basically a cousin to PCBs. They are used in flame retardants. And they are increasing in the bodies of infants and young children especially.

 

“When you take PBDEs into the laboratory and look at them for endocrine disruption, for thyroid hormones and for developmental neurotoxicity, they have the same effects, the effects you’d expect them to have based on their similarity to PCBs.” –SLOW DEATH BY RUBBER DUCK page 111.

 

Where are PBDEs used? In flame retardants.

 

Now, “common sense” may well tell you that it is a good thing to have flame retardants in your furniture and in your children’s pyjamas.

 

Common sense may NOT tell you that those same flame retardants may disrupt your hormones, your endocrine system and your nervous system.

High Fructose Corn Syrup: Leading Cause of the World Wide Obesity Epidemic?

 

If common sense were enough, we would not have a world wide obesity epidemic.

 

Did you know about this? Anecdotally, I visited my home country of Finland in 1978 and 1982. At that time, there certainly were overweight people. But nothing like my recent trips where I have seen young people grossly overweight. This is also the case in the UK, from my observations.

 

What is the cause? This is my personal conclusion and not backed up by the medical community…yet. Just so you know.

 

In the 1970s, U.S. President Richard Nixon’s administration pushed the use of HFCS or High Fructose Corn Syrup as an alternative to sugar. It had benefits: it was cheaper than sugar, for one thing.

 

HFCS Turns Off The “Satiety Switch”

 

Food manufacturers jumped on it and now HFCS is in many food items. The other “benefit” to manufacturers was and is that HFCS “turns off the satiety switch.” In other words, when you consume HFCS, you do not feel full. Instead we can easily continue to eat, eat and over-eat.

 

This “benefit” of HFCS has caused the population of the developed world to overeat. Thus the obesity epidemic.

 

HFCS Responsible for increase in Type 2 Diabetes?

 

HFCS may also be responsible for the increase in type 2 diabetes.  This used to be called “Adult Onset Diabetes.” The name was changed when a new phenomenon occurred: children as young as eight years of age are now coming down with this disease. Could HFCS in humongous sized soft drinks possibly be contributing?

 

“Common sense” may tell you that we are ok as long as don’t overdo anything. When everyone around us is consuming 150 pounds of sugar and sugar substitutes per year on average, we may feel we are in a safe zone if we only consume 100 pounds per year. This is still a far cry from 3 pounds per person per year in the 1800s.

 

Epidemic of Silent Inflammation?

 

“Common sense” may not know about the pioneering work of Dr. Richard Johnson, author of THE SUGAR FIX.

 

Dr. Johnson and a handful of researchers have discovered that our overconsumption of fructose of fruit sugar has caused what may be called an epidemic of silent inflammation in the population.

 

Other researchers point to inflammation as a causative factor in all disease.

 

Might it be that many of our modern diseases could be alleviated, if not cured, by addressing this silent inflammation?

 

“Common sense” may tell us that we are better off by cutting back on our sugar consumption.

 

Cutting Back on Sugar Consumption Does Nothing?

 

It won’t tell us what Dr. Johnson found. His research shows that cutting back on fructose consumption does little or nothing to decrease the silent inflammation once the fructose enzymes have been activated by overconsumption. (White sugar is a complex sugar made up of two simple sugars: glucose and fructose.)

The inappropriateness of such destruction

Your “Olive Oil” May Be Poisoning You…

 

Most “Extra Virgin” Olive Oil is Not Even Olive Oil

 

 

You buy “extra virgin” olive oil because you believe it’s healthy.

 

69% of the time, you could be buying something else.

 

Something that is “rancid, fusty and musty.”

 

Something that could be mostly soybean oil or peanut oil or canola oil or sunflower oil or any of a number of other cheaper oils.

 

In the well researched book Extra Virginity, The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil, author Tom Mueller points out that 69% of olive oil that is labeled “extra virgin” is not olive oil at all.

 

69% of Olive Oils Had…Flaws

 

“A recent survey of supermarket extra virgins performed by the UC Davis Olive Center, in cooperation with the Australian Oil Research Laboratory, revealed that 69 percent of oils tested had taste flaws such as rancid, fusty, and musty, which meant that they weren’t extra virgin oils at all, and had been mislabeled…similar findings were reached by Andreas Maerz in Germany, by CHOICE magazine in Australia, by the regional government of Andalucia, and by documentaries in Swiss and German television about extra virgin quality in those countries…Paul Vossen, a University of California oil specialist (says)…’I would say very seldom do we ever find one that passes as extra virgin…price is by no means an indicator of quality…The high-ticket items can be equally bad.’…

 

Market Awash in Counterfeit Oils

 

Mike Bradley concludes that ‘the market is awash in counterfeit olive oil to the point that most legitimate sellers have given up trying to sell the real thing to wholesale suppliers or restaurants. It is rare to find authentic extra virgin olive oil…even in fine restaurants that ought to know better. It’s nearly impossible in some localities…’”

 

More Money in Adulterating Olive Oil Than (there was) in Bootlegging

 

From Mueller’s book again:

 

“there is more profit in adulterating olive oil than there is in bootlegging. The practice of adulterating this oil has grown until it has become a menace to the honest importers in the trade.” –US Health Commissioner Royal S. Copeland speaking in 1922, two years into prohibition.

 

 

Systematic Corruption of the Olive Oil Market Continues to This Day

 

Over a number of years, Mueller’s research for the book took him all over the olive oil world, to Italy, Spain, Greece, and to the new world producers in California, South America and Australia.

 

What he found was a systematically corrupt network of growers, manufacturers, suppliers and retailers that has made the term “extra virgin” useless. Even the term “organic” is no guarantee that you and I are getting the real deal.

 

Good News: Healthy Olive Oil IS Available

 

There is a strong and vibrant movement underway of growers and retailers who care about the quality of the olive oil they produce and sell.

 

It IS possible to buy real olive oil and receive the anti oxidant and anti inflammatory qualities olive oil is recognized for.

 

The Bad News: Good Olive Oil Stings

 

“If an oil doesn’t sting at the back of the throat, it contains little or no oleocanthol.” (my bolding) If you are used to bland olive oils, the real deal may take some getting used to. The substances that give rise to the health benefits make olive oil bitter and sting at the back of the throat. If it stings to the point of coughing, even better.

 

More Good News: The Health Benefits are Awesome

 

From Mueller’s book again:

Disappointment AND Excitement

 

Corruption of the olive oil market is disappointing. I felt like the carpet was being pulled from under me as I read Mueller’s book. At the same time, it is inspiring to hear of the many producers whose hearts are in the right place. It means that you and I, armed with this new information, can go out and get the real stuff. We can throw out the old and start getting some of the benefits of the Mediterranean diet.

 

Olive Oil is Anti-Inflammatory AND Anti-Oxidant

 

As you may know, inflammation is said to be at the root of all dis-ease. Olive oil is anti-inflammatory.

 

The “bad cholesterol” is only bad if it is oxidized. (My doctor, James Houston here in Victoria, agreed with me when I told him that). Olive oil, the real deal good stuff, is an anti-oxidant,

 

So good olive oil may protect against all dis-ease and against the effects of the ‘bad’ cholesterol.

 

Your Mission Should You Decide to Accept

 

If your current olive oil doesn’t have that pepperiness at the back of the throat, it doesn’t have the oleocanthol.

 

If your current olive oil isn’t bitter, it’s low in other healthy ingredients, namely tocopherol and squalene.

 

And if it isn’t velvety in texture, that indicates there is no hydroxytyrosol in the oil.

 

And if it has none of those, it may not be olive oil at all but any of a number of unhealthy and damaging vegetable oils.

 

Is it time to throw it out then and find a source for the real stuff?

P.S. Good olive oil is “worth its weight in gold” as the saying goes. In my opinion, it is far more worthy than gold. Good health and great energy far outweigh material riches. You can always make money IF you have your health and your energy. But if you don’t have your health, money means nothing.

 

Therefore, I choose to pay the price for the real stuff. You wouldn’t put 50 octane gasoline into your car. Why would you put “50 octane or less” fuel into your body? Throw out the old stuff and get the real deal. You and your body deserve it.

How to Make Stress Your Friend and Increase Your Chances of Living a Healthy Life into Your 90s.

 

We have been told (over and over again) that stress is harmful. We hear constantly about how stress is a killer.

 

We are advised to reduce stress through meditation, yoga, guided relaxations and so on.

 

But what if stress can be harnessed for good…for our benefit?

 

Is it as simple as changing our belief about stress?

 

What if we “reframe” stress?

 

What if, instead of believing that stress is our enemy, out to harm us, we embrace stress as a friend who is plugging us into more life energy?

 

Can that make a difference?

 

In a TED talk, psychologist Kelly McGonigal quotes a US study that tracked 39 adults over eight years. They asked them about their level of stress. They also asked them if they believed that stress was harmful to their hearts!

 

The study showed people who experienced a lot of stress had a 43% increased risk of dying.

 

But…that was only true if people also believed that stress is harmful to their health.

 

McGonigal estimates that 182,000 people died because they believed stress is harmful to them. If she is correct in her estimate that means that more people died as a result of believing stress is bad for them than died of skin cancer, HIV/AIDS and homicide!

 

A Harvard University study encouraged participants in a stress study to view stress as a friend, energizing their bodies to meet the challenge in front of them.

 

The result? The participants were less anxious and more confident!

 

But the real surprise was their bodies’ physiological response. Stress can constrict the arteries. This is one of the reasons stress is associated with cardiovascular disease.

 

In this study, when the participants viewed stress as positive, their blood vessels stayed relaxed and open and did not constrict!

 

McGonigal contends that this one biological change may make the difference between dying of a stress-induced heart attack at age 50 and living well into your 90s.

 

Whew! and Wow!

 

I have been leading Laughter Yoga sessions for years now and referring its benefits in reducing stress. And I will continue to extol the benefits of laughter. However, this information can be wonderfully life affirming.

 

So, how do we put this to use in real life?

 

McGonigal tells us it is this simple: When we are in a stressful situation, when we find our hearts pounding, our breathing increasing and so on, we simply remember this article and this TED talk.

 

We think to ourselves: “This is my body rising to the challenge.”

 

When you view stress that way, your body believes you and your stress response becomes healthier.

Overwhelm is an Emotion

It has nothing to do with what is going on outside of you. You may THINK you are feeling overwhelmed and/or stressed out because of the sheer number of tasks at work.

 

You may feel frazzled by the demands of your family be it sick kids, aging parents and demanding daily schedule.

 

It could be that you are facing financial challenges…not enough money at the end of the month syndrome.

 

Whatever is happening OUTSIDE of you is NOT the cause of the emotion. Even if everyone around you agrees with you that you are doing too much and how do you do it and so son.

 

No, the feeling of being overwhelmed is an emotion separate and apart from the “triggers” that we may identify as the cause of that feeling.

 

The stimulus hits our physical, mental and emotional system and causes a reaction. Let’s take an example. Say you were on your way to a job interview for a position you really wanted and felt would be perfect for you and someone bangs into your car from the rear. No injuries ensue but now you are not going to make the interview, you have take time to exchange information, maybe call and wait for the police. You will have to get the car fixed and deal with all the time consuming paperwork. You missed the appointment so you didn’t get the job. Now you don’t know where the rent or mortgage is coming from for next month. You may even get a tongue lashing from a close family member.

 

Would you now be justified in feeling overwhelmed? Well, sure. If you play “victim!”

 

Here’s the secret: There is a space in between stimulus (the car accident) and the response. We can actually choose how we respond. We can choose to rewire the brain and nervous system to respond in a way that allows us to feel joy, the inner and authentic joy that permeates every cell of our being.

 

Here’s what we don’t know. The universe IS a friendly place. It is always arranging things for our best and highest good. It could well be that the “fender-bender” caused a delay that prevents us from being in a far more serious accident further down the road.

 

It could be that the “ideal job” was not in our highest and best good and something far better is waiting for us.

 

It becomes a question of do you trust the universe of not. I, for one, do.

 

Regardless, whatever the stimulus, I can choose to remain in joy. By doing so, I have the greatest chance of making the best of the situation.

 

Why?

 

Because when we are in joy, there are more neural connections in the brain and that allows us to make wiser choices in any given situation. As simple as that.

It’s Christmas eve and I am with family in the Finnish countryside. Now, in Finland, Christmas Eve is when everything happens.

 

At noon, there is the Christmas Peace proclamation over the TV. Traditionally, everyone watches. Then, the Christmas sauna in the afternoon.

 

Early evening, the huge and delicious Christmas dinner. The Tension mounts as the children wait for “Joulupukki” or Santa to show up. In some homes, he actually comes inside and distributes the gifts. In others, we see him briefly outside the window and the gifts are dropped at the door.

 

The only problem is just as we are starting to eat, I come up with a fever and the chills. Uncontrollable shivering AND I can’t eat a bite!

 

Now, you may think this a disaster. I would have thought so too in previous times.

 

But with my experience with Laughter Yoga, I now have a secret weapon: a smile.

 

That’s right. Even though I am shivering with a fever and my body is rebelling against eating, I still feel good.

 

And it is the smile. As long as I maintain it, I continue to feel good. This is truly amazing.

 

We know that laughter causes the body to produce endorphins. It is the same with a smile.

 

I can feel the joy despite my body being racked with fever. What an amazing discovery.

 

I suspect the smile produced endorphins are also a major healing agent.
