May “Dense Joy” be With You Always. Mastery Newsletter Dec. 2013

“Dense Joy” These words came to me at night. Is it true that to have higher and higher levels of joy we must experience deeper levels of its opposite? I suspect not. Mostly because joy has no opposite!

 

Happiness, which we can define as being caused by something outside of ourselves, on the other hand has sadness as its opposite counterpart. Studies show that, at best, a lottery win creates a 10% increase in happiness. Nothing to write home about. Oh yes, the winners get REAL happy but it only lasts for a few months. After about a year they are back to their same level of happiness, or their “happiness set point.” This from a study of 20 lottery winners.

 

Joy is something that resides inside us all the time, In fact joy resides everywhere. It has no boundaries. It is joined at the hip with love and has no counterpart. It just IS. “Dense Joy” is just another way of saying I am deeply connected to love, to the energy that flows through the Universe. The deeper the connection, the denser the joy. Or more correctly, our experience of joy, of love of connection to others and the Univese.

 

How to feel joy more of the time? Many techniques exist. Laughter is one, of course. A more easily accessible way is the smile. Just smiling creates the same “feel good” hormones such as endorphings.

 

And smiling is easy to do anytime, anywhere…once we get used to doing it. If you are having difficulty getting it going, there is a handy tool to help out: your pen. Just put a pen sideways into your mouth and notice what happens. That’s my Christmas gift to you. May the joy be with you always.

Notable events of 2013: Lots of Laughter Yoga sessions. Attended the All America Laughter Conference in Surrey, BC outside of Vancouver. (At Camp Alexandra, where I went as a 8 year old boy!) Moved three times, Whew. (That was a lowlight.)

 

Finished my ZenofJoy.com website http://zenofjoy.com/. It took a year, almost as long as writing the book. Must learn how to delegate more.

 

Had some delightful Laughter Yoga gigs as a leader. One was a two day at the camp for children with Type one diabetes. What courage and fun from them all. Inspiring.

 

A session I held at the naval base of Esquimalt caused delight for me as at least one person continued on coming to Laughter Yoga sessions and credits Laughter Yoga with allowing herself to laugh more and not care what others think about it. Just hearing that one story made my day.

 

One of the great treasures in life is giving and when I can give something that makes a real difference, I just get tickled pink. Enjoy the rest of the read,

Saturday morning 11am. I have just spent the better part of an hour laughing. And wow, does it feel great.

 

It is spring of 2009 and having been recently certified as a Laughter Yoga Leader, I lead these sessions of 5-15 like minded folks who also love to laugh.

 

There are smiles and hugs aplenty after the session and we all feel good…or great.

 

“What a great way to start the weekend” is what I am thinking as I bound down the stairs ready to face the day, get some shopping done and prepare for a Saturday evening.

 

Sunday morning rolls around and I don’t feel so great anymore. Truth be told, I am angry. What the…?

 

This goes on for weeks.

 

Fast forward to July 2009 and I am on the southern coast of Finland with a couple of dozen other Laughter Yoga Leaders from my home country of Suomi (Finnish for Finland) and some Leaders from Norway, Belgium, Germany and Croatia.

 

This is heaven. We get up early for 7 am meditation. (Hey, it’s early for me. In fact, I am late a couple of times.)  The rest of the day is spent in laughing, learning and laughing some more.

 

Not only that, but there is a wood fired sauna by the ocean so I can indulge my Finnish-ness and jump in the water after being properly heated up. Paradise for a Finn-Boy.

 

It is here where I learn what was going on when I felt anger on the Sundays following a Saturday morning Laughter Yoga session.

 

Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga and our trainer during the week, explained it.

 

In India, he tells me, when there is a death, the family grieves openly. There is lots of crying, wailing and openly releasing the pain of losing a family member.

 

In our western society, not so much. (Perhaps this is partly what Gandhi meant when he responded to the question of what he thought of western civilization. His answer? “I think it would be a good idea.”)

 

Instead, we tend to hold on to our emotions and trap them. And where we trap them is in the diaphragm!

 

When I laughed for an hour on Saturday mornings, I started a process of releasing trapped emotions by laughing and moving the diaphragm rather dramatically for an hour.

 

Eventually I no longer got angry the next day after a Laughter Yoga session.

 

It is as if, a layer of pain had been released.

 

So, while Laughter Yoga does feel great as it releases the “feel good” hormones like the endorphins, it also served the function of peeling a layer of the “pain onion” and releasing it.

 

In the process of doing that, I re-felt the emotion around that pain. That pain showed up as anger.

 

So the purpose is not so much to feel good as to “peel the onion” of what Eckhart Tolle calls the “pain body.”

 

Fortunately, I now have extra tools and techniques to continue peeling more layers of the onion. Laughing is one. Smiling is another. (I just reminded myself to smile while I write this.)

 

In fact, Laughter Yoga has led me to deepen my study of the human condition and I wrote down the lessons in my book The Zen of Joy. How to Rewire Your Brain for Happiness and Success.

 

It contains 24 protocols or practices that take only minutes a day and work together to peel those layers from the pain body and reach for higher levels of what is termed “The Happiness Set Point.”

 

Smiling is one of them. You have easy access to this at any time. Here is a simple way to do it. Take a pen and put is sideways in the mouth. Notice what happens when the facial muscles form a smile around the pen.

Thank you Matti.

In the Landmark Education (which Madan also attended) it was referred to as a ?fundamental break in Being? ? that traumatic moment when we experienced it was not okay to simply BE (due to a scary emotion) and the way we reacted was by stopping ourself from breathing (and thus stopping ourself from feeling).? (This likely occurred within a few days of birth, possibly even prior to being born.)

Ever since that first, fundamental, lesson in Stopping our Emotions, we inhibit uncomfortable emotional expression by limiting the breath (internally seizing the diaphragm).? And as you said, when we stimulate that dear old diaphragm (from nice safe laughter), the old suppressed emotions may get stirred up (to be released). ?Hence, after laughing we may feel anger, fear, sadness, etc.

Not to worry – it?s just Emotional Energy being Set Free!

Healthy Glowing Complexion from the Inside Out with Oil Pulling.

 

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic healing technique.

 

According to Wikipedia, “It is mentioned in the Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita, where it is called Kavala Gandoosha or Kavala Graha. Ayurvedic literature describes oil pulling as capable of both improving oral health and treating systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus or asthma.”

 

There are many other claims for oil pulling including detoxing the body, increasing energy, whitening teeth, clearing up acne and giving a glowing complexion. Those claims from Nutritionist and Naturopath Dr. Bruce Fife.

 

According to dermatologist and author Dr. Debra Jaliman “…oil pulling is probably most helpful for the gums, as it stops the growth of strep bacteria…” (quoted in Huffington Post)

 

 

How to do it

 

Rinse the teeth and gums very thoroughly with a tablespoon of coconut oil. Do it slowly for 15 to 20 minutes up to three times a day on an empty stomach. As our digestive juices dilute it, it becomes thin and milk-white in colour. Then, we spit it out and brush our teeth.

Karach said the Oilpulling heals totally ‘head-aches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs and women’s diseases. It heals diseases of nerves, paralysis, and encephalitis. It prevents the growth of malignant tumors, cuts and heals them. Chronic sleeplessness is cured.’”

 

Dr. Bruce Fife: “It acts much like the oil you put in your car engine. The oil picks up dirt and grime. When you drain the oil, it pulls out the dirt and grime with it, leaving the engine relatively clean. Consequently, the engine runs smoother and lasts longer. Why Your Brain Loves Laughter. Mastery Newsletter November 2013

Your brain is waiting to be tickled.

A part of the brain called the nucleus accumbens loves to be flooded with a substance called dopamine.

When dopamine hits the nucleus accumbens, we feel great!

 

There are a number of ways to tickle that part of the brain.Eating food is one, sex is another, seeing scenes or pictures of pleasant emotional scenes is another. One of the easiest, most accessible, readily available at any time and effective ways is laughter.

 

The relatively new science of pscyhoneuroimmunoendocrinology or PNI deals with the interplay of the organs and glands that regulate our behaviour and physiological balance.

Laughter and happiness researchers Drs. Berk and Henslin coined a phrase “dopaminergic upregulation in the nucleus accumbens.” (Thanks to  Laughter Yoga Teacher Jeffrey Briar for this info). It is their scientific way of saying “feeling happy.”

 

What it refers to is dopamine flooding that area of the brain and we feel great. But to the scientists indicates that in a certain region of the brain (the nucleus accumbens) there are biochemical influences (dopaminergic upregulation, or “higher levels of dopamine”).

 

Laughter, and here is a major key to finding a way to “tickle your brain,” fake laughter produces this dopamine to flood that specific area of the brain. You don’t even have to consciously do anything else. You don’t have to say: “OK, now I direct my system to send dopamine to the nucleus accumbens.” No, our systems are hard wired to do that for us. All we have to do is laugh or fake the laughter.

 

For many of us, the big hurdle is “feeling silly” while doing it. The challenge is to push through that stage, which doesn’t have to last very long. You may remember the book Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. Well, this is similar, feel silly and do it anyway.

 

Beyond Feeling Great

There is another reason to laugh beside just that it allows us to feel great. That other reason is that your life may well depend on it.

 

In his wonderful book When the Body Says No – The Cost of Hidden Stress, Dr. Gabor Mate’ outlines the many diseases from cancer on down that feed on stress.

 

The stress factors, cortisol, adrenaline and catecholines depress the immune system…for a good reason. When we are faced with a threat, our bodies respond by preparing us for flight or fight as a defense mechanism. Were it not for this process, our ancestors would have been meals for the Saber Tooth Tiger or other predators and we would not be here. So stress has a hugely important function in our survival as a species and as individuals.

 

Why is Stress Bad Then?

When we have continuous release of the stress factors, the our immune system becomes compromised and can no longer work at anywhere near peak efficiency. (I am not a doctor, so this is super simplified, but the concept is still valid)

“Chronic” stress is the term when we are in a constant state of “flight or fight.” We were not designed for this constant flow of stress hormones. It has been said that stress is the number one killer as it has now been shown to be linked as at the least a contributing factor in many illnesses.

If so, how can we release the hold those stress hormones have on us?

You guessed it: Laughter.

One of the secrets I recently came across is this: the stress hormones cannot coexist in our bodies with the feel good hormones like the endorphins.

 

So…your mission should you decide to accept is to find a way to release the chronic stress. (Yes, we all tend to have it in modern society).

I humbly propose laughter as one of the most effective, easily accessible ways. Just for you, I have produced a 10 minute video so you can laugh along with me. By the way, it’s no good saying “I laugh a lot anyway.” It takes about ten minutes of sustained laughter to get the health benefits. In every day life, that rarely happens. Most of the time when we laugh at a joke or a humorous situation, the laugh lasts for a few seconds. That’s not quite enough.

Laughing Longer, Louder, Deeper and More Joyously Than Ever Before. Mastery Newsletter Sept. 2, 2013

Last week, I laughed longer, louder, deeper and more joyously than I can ever remember.

 

The occasion? The All America Laughter Yoga Conference. This year held at Camp Alexandra on Crescent Beach just south of Vancouver, BC, Canada.

 

When I got there, I realized it was the same camp I attended when I was about 9 or 10 years old! A few of the old buildings were still there.

 

But, back to laughing. Five of us went for sushi on Saturday night and that’s were it started. We were splitting a gut on tales from one of our number about her adventures in an MRI machine.

 

On the way back to camp to be in the audience for the Laughter Championships, we kept triggering each other and kept laughing.

 

When we got there, we had to position ourselves outside the door as our continuous laughter was getting disruptive. We were even shushed at one point. (Now, THAT is something to put on our resumes…being shushed at a Laughter Yoga Conference for laughing too much and too loudly. J)

 

At any rate, three teams of four were entered to compete and, on an impulse, our group of five crashed the stage and participated as well. We had such a hoot.

A shift:

 

It’s great to laugh, but the important point is that I sense a deep shift happened to another boosting of the “Happiness Set Point.”

 

As a result of the laughter during the weekend and also the learning that occurred, I am finding it easier to maintain an even more joyous outlook on life.

 

 

My wish for you, dear reader, is that you also will find ways to continue raising your “Happiness Set Point.”

A Moving Experience

Bruised knuckles. That’s what I intended to avoid, amongst other things, in hiring someone to move
my belongings to the new place.

I don’t recall that moving was ever this trying. Two solid weeks searching for suitable place (12 days out of 15 were spent full time just looking, as many as 5 places a day). It may have something to do with the internet. Prior to the net, one looked in the paper, made some calls went to look at a few and made a decision.

Now, PadMapper.com gives you ALL the places in the city and Perpaps it is just me, but I just had to see most of them.

To make a short story longer, I am now ensconced, for better or worse, in a new place by the outer harbour of our fair city, Victoria.

A new place has different sounds. A neighour’s dog who does bark sometimes at night. Down the street, some owners of “hogs,” the motorbikes with the loud throaty sound. Creaks and crackles, hisses and hums that are no worse or better than the old place, just DIFFERENT.

It’s just as well I am not on the harbour side. The sound of the seaplanes taking ofsf is enough to drown out any phone conversation. I counted six of them getting airborne within ten minutes one time.

Still, I have more “elbow room” in the office now and that makes for a little easier breathing in a way. AND I am on the West Bay Walkway. Out the door and I am breathing sea air and the 10,000 micronutrients that emanate from trees and other life giving entities of nature. CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) just had a program on how a 15 minute walk in nature increased adaptibility and relaxation in individual by 20%, compared to those who walked in the city.

So, it all comes down to counting your blessings. Focus on the positive.

Opening up to more awareness. Why is it Important?

 

Life will kick you. Of that there is no doubt.

 

Why? Because we refuse to pay attention.

 

Ego (our conscious mind) wants to run the show. Ego wants to make plans and implement them. Set goals and work toward them. (Know how to make God laugh? Tell him your plans. J)

 

What’s wrong with that? Nothing. Except…Ego has a limited view of life and misses some important stuff.

 

Whereas “Life” (the Universe, God, the Life Force) is infinite and can see “the big picture.”

 

Therefore, Life is always nudging us toward our highest good. Ego resists because it thinks it knows better.

 

More accurately put, Ego persists and insists on having its way.

 

Life is ever present, though, and never gives up. It initially nudges us to move in harmony with its “Grand Plan” and move us toward our highest good.

 

When we don’t pay attention to the subtle signals, Life gives a stronger message. If we continue to ignore the signals, eventually Life boots us in the behind.

 

“Pay attention, kid” Life seems to be saying.

 

Ignore these stronger signals at your peril. Life WILL have its way.

 

If Life has to make us sick to get out attention, so be it.

 

Now, here’s the tricky bit.

 

We have the ability to mask pain. Trauma can cause pain, be it physical or emotional in nature. We can choose to feel the pain, dive into and release it…or we can tense the muscles around that pain and not have to feel it.

 

If we choose the second option (an all too popular one with me), that pain will eventually resurface. In time, if we continue to mask pain by the unconscious tensing of muscles, the resurfacing of that pain can become excruciating and erupt into serious dis-ease and perhaps one of the major diseases such as cancer, heart attacks and so on.

 

Life will have its way. Learning how to work with the energies and the subtle and not so subtle messages life sends us may seem more painful at first. Learning how to listen and act on the nudges Life is giving us to move us toward our highest good can open us up to great joy and fulfillment.

 

Feel the pain now…or feel much more of it later. Those seem to be the choices. I choose feeling and releasing it now.

 

Here is one way of plugging into intuition, from my book The Zen of Joy.

 

Just before falling asleep, ask: “Dear God (Dear Universe, Dear Subconscious Mind … it doesn’t matter what you call it,just ask sincerely, according to your own religious or secular belief structure), I ask for and am willing to receive the answer to this question: (state the question).

Thank for providing the answer for me. And it is done.”

 

Don’t be surprised (though you may be!) if you receive elegant solutions to some of the stickiest “problems” or situations in your life. It has happened for many others. It can happen for you too.

Heal sunburn in one night…three simple ingredients!

 

Ingredients:

3-4 inch piece off an aloe vera plant, sliced in half

1 Tbsp coconut oil, in liquid form

1/2 – 1 tsp raw honey

 

The amounts above will vary depending on how much you need to cover. This amount will cover the area that a tank top does not cover on your chest.

 

Directions: Rub aloe vera all over the burned area and let dry (30-90 sec), next take coconut oil and rub over burned area (over where the aloe was put). Next take the honey or propolis and rub into any areas that look more red or blistered. Then put an old tee shirt on and go to bed. Most if not all will be absorbed by morning. Take a warm wash cloth and wipe off any sticky spots. For maintenance continue the process the next night. Do this process until the burn is either gone or doing much better.

We are taught in many ways that happiness is something that we stumble onto, or have to work at getting as in “the pursuit of happiness” written into the American constitution.

 

We spend a lot of energy changing our circumstances with the aim of achieving the desired state of happiness.

 

But, what if our circumstances have little to do with our long term happiness?

 

What if happiness really is an “inside job?” What if we could be happy and joyous without making any changes to our environment at all?

 

What if happiness or joy is really dependent on a discipline?

 

I know it may seem counter-intuitive. We don’t tend to associate the effort of discipline with creating joy.

 

Sometimes it seems as if the world is conspiring to make us unhappy. Here’s an example: recently, we had a couple of very nice young ladies move in downstairs of our living space. Being young, they stay up later than I do and sometimes even party at all hours of the night and early morning.

 

Am I supposed to be happy in the wake of a number of continuous nights of disturbed sleep? Hmm.

 

Here I am the author of a book on joy (The Zen of Joy http://zenofjoy.com/ ) and I find myself getting upset. I just created 24 protocols for the book on how to be joyous regardless of what is going on in the world outside of my skin. Why am I feeling turmoil?

 

Do these protocols only work in ideal situations and not when I am overly tired? Oh, it’s easy to say I would be angry too if someone kept me up six nights in a row.

 

But what if?…..

 

What if the Universe is sending me a test to see how this stuff really works? To see if I really can let go of disturbances in my “energy field?” Even when I am overly tired and even when my “buttons” have been pushed.

 

When I gave up on the idea retirement as a way of life, I also stumbled on to the concept that we are actually meant to work harder as we grow older. That as we gain experience and skills over the decades, we will find the Universe providing harder and harder tests for us. Tests intended to show us how to let go more and more. To let go of expectations, even the “reasonable” expectation that we should be able to have a good night’s sleep. Whew, heavy thought.

 

You mean to say the “Promised Land” of retirement doesn’t exist? We don’t actually get to “take it easy” when we get older?

 

Other cultures value their elders and look to them for guidance. Not so much in our western society. Perhaps it is time to change that.

 

What can we “older types” do?

 

I suggest my learning is this: we learn how to set an example by what we do, not what we say.

 

That we show tolerance, kindness, compassion and yes, love to those who unthinkingly create disturbances for us.

 

A tall challenge? Yes.

 

The actor Sylvester Stallone expressed surprise that at age 55, life had not become any easier. I think we need to accept that it is not going to happen.

 

As motivational author and speaker Jim Rohn said: “We will either have the pain of discipline or the pain of disappointment (or words to that effect).

 

I choose discipline, the discipline of happiness and joy. I choose working on my “internal architecture” to feel that joy…regardless of what is going on outside of me. Yes, it does at times seem impossible.

 

The good news is it must be do-able. It may be hard work, but “Hard work never killed a healthy man” said Dr. Paul Dudley White, the doctor to President Eisenhower.

 

So we get to choose. Discipline ourselves to be happy or be tossed around from happiness to misery by the winds of change.

 

We have freedom of choice. Which will you choose?

Laughing Your Way to Joy

One of the great secrets of life is this: If we are happy, we are 31% more productive, make 19% fewer mistakes and, if we are in sales, make 37% more sales.  (Source: Shawn Achor in The Happiness Advantage)

Our minds are the great detractors from joy and happiness. It is when we allow our minds to take over and run the show that we are distracted from our joy.

It is our minds that worry. As we know, worry is not productive. Yet we fret about what might happen in the future.  When we do so, we take ourselves out of the present moment where all our power is.

Also, when we fret about what happened in the past, about mistakes we made and opportunities we missed, we also are not living in the present moment.

Can fear and worry be eliminated if we find a way to live in the eternal “now?”

Why not? Here is a simple 3 Point Method to Get Into the “Now” anytime, anywhere.

1) Release the tension around the eyes: practice the martial arts “soft eyes.”

2) Practice the Inner Smile

3) Put your attention into the centre,  just below the belly button.

Does being careful of everything we eat make any difference?

 

One of my correspondents wondered if watching our food intake makes any difference. Here is what she said:

 

 

Sometimes I wonder, Matti…….

 

 

 

My family has a history of longevity.   The only thing I could find in common with them was that none of them did any exercise.  🙂

 

 

 

They ate daily in a way we would not consider to be healthy…..always meat, gravy, spuds, a token vegetable-overcooked, desserts and cookies/cake for morning coffee and afternoon tea and bedtime snacks.  My mom never served salads until long after I’d grown up and left home.

 

 

 

So? Does being careful of everything we eat make any difference?

 

 

 

R. made her transition a couple of days ago.  Today she would have been 98 years old.

 

She’s in my extended family, grandmother of my brother’s kids through their mother so I didn’t inherit any of her genes.

 

 

 

She was much loved….always upbeat, optimistic, never ever critical, always supportive and she made us feel good just to be with her. She is proof that optimists live longer !

 

 

 

Many of my own family liked to look at the bright side rather than the negative but some who were negative thinkers lived into their 90’s.   

 

 

 

I don’t see an answer.  Does it really matter what we eat?  My people didn’t take vitamins and supplements.  There’s no history of Alzheimer’s/dementia. I need to knock off the weight I gained since moving here a couple of years ago but “eat less” works as well as any rigid eating program.

 

 

 

I wonder if worrying about what you eat is worse than just eating what you like…(within reason).?????

 

 

 

I begin to think that other factors are more important….like close families, a sense of community, lots of hugs….feeling connected.

Whew. Lots of issues brought up there.

 

 

Yes, I think we all know of folks who ate whatever they wanted, some even smoked all their lives and still lived to a “ripe old age” as the saying goes.

 

 

 

Even your link of optimism would not make sense as some of your “negative thinking” relatives also were long lived.

 

 

 

Your final thoughts have much to recommend them. “Close families, a sense of community, lots of hugs, feeling connected.” The Blue Zones book talked about four different societies where all of these had a positive effect on health and longevity.

 

 

 

There is definitely more to a healthy life than a good diet and exercise. I recently found some studies into community dating back as far as the 1800s that showed a positive effect on health. Hugs have been shown to produce oxycontin, a hormone that helps us to feel good and feel connected.

 

 

 

It may well be that living in joy, laughing often and playing may trump diet and supplements. Recently a TV news report of a 71 year old man entitled “Never Leave the Playground” showed how he had improved the markers of aging by playing all day. Riding his elliptical bicycle, juggling, walking a tightrope and many other activities were featured in the report. He said his memory was sharper than ever as a result.

 

 

 

In Laughter Yoga, we have started to expand to the four elements of joy, laughing, singing, dancing and child-like play. I sense that we can’t go wrong by including some of each of those into a daily routine.

 

 

 

Further, I am reminded that in many shamanic societies, if you came to a shaman or medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions.

 

 

 

When did you stop dancing?

 

 

 

When did you stop singing?

 

 

 

When did you stop being enchanted by stories?

 

 

 

When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence?

 

 

 

Where we have stopped dancing, singing, being enchanted by stories, or finding comfort in silence is where we have experienced the loss of soul.

 

 

 

Dancing, singing, storytelling, and silence are considered four universal healing salves.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Two other points to make and that is that our parents and grandparents lived in a time when food was not as adulterated as it is now. Low levels of antibiotics and growth hormones may find their way into our meat and dairy products. Much of what passes for food in the supermarket some call “junk” food. Most of that was not available to our forebears. (I don’t call it junk food. To me, it is either food or it is junk, i.e. toxic poison.)

 

 

 

So, much greater care is needed to ensure that we are, in fact, eating food and not poison. Your parents may have eaten spuds, but I will bet their consumption of potato chips was negligible.

 

 

 

Further, with the degradation of the soil over the past century, the nutrient value of food is said by many researchers to be negligible. “Nutrient dense” food is the next issue to deal with after we eliminate “junk” food. Then we get into the whole issue of additives. In the 1950s, a handful of food additives were allowed to be added to food. Today, it is estimated there are 50,000 !!! chemicals that are allowed to be added to our food supply.

 

 

 

My friend Dr. Terry Willard estimates that the average North American takes in 10% of their bodyweight in pure chemicals annually. I can’t believe we can easily adapt to that quick a change. (There is evidence to suggest we have not yet adapted to grains, which were introduced 10,000 years ago.)

 

 

 

Whether to supplement? This is becoming stickier as there is a thought that with Codex Alimentarius, many of our vitamins and other supplements may well be taken off the market. A long term plan to move toward nutrient dense food may be all that is left if supplements bite the dust.

 

 

 

Finally, as for worrying, you are definitely right about that. I myself can confess to being a perpetual worrywart about food. When I had hepatitis after foolishly drinking untreated water from Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, I was dining with a new friend at a vegetarian restaurant in Panajachel. When I mentioned that I really ought not to be having olive oil, he quickly retorted: “Don’t hex your food.”

 

 

 

Only years later did I understand the vital importance of blessing our food and eating it with gratitude and reverence. It could well be that even low quality food can transmute itself into wonderful health in our body when we bless it all.

 

 

Re Weight Loss (Capitalized, as it is such a common goal in western society): If eating less and exercising more worked, no one would have a weight issue.

 

The whole “calories in-calories out” theory was blown out of the water by author Tim Ferris in his book The Four Hour Body. Eat a cookie, walk up 27 flights of stairs to work it off is what Ferris calls “Parking lot science.” It’s convenient to think that way, but it does not work. He proved it by gaining 34 pounds in muscle, losing 3 pounds of fat in 28 days. Impossible, said the so called experts. Yet, his entire experiment was recorded by Dr. Peggy Plato, director of Sports and Fitness Evaluation Program at San Jose State University.

 

So, forget trying to lose fat by limiting food and adding some exercise.

 

(Did you notice I changed “losing weight” to “losing fat?” Building muscle is critical to fat loss as increased muscle density means you are burning fast even as you sleep. Muscles weigh more than fat, so you may actually gain weight while losing fat and getting healthier.)

 

Making weight loss a goal is a losing proposition. Instead, I suggest it is far wiser to focus on getting healthier. As we discover the practices that increase our health, fat loss can become an automatic by-product. Far better approach.

 

(There are examples of those who chose weight loss as a goal, achieved the goal…and died. We had an example here in my home town of Victoria. It was covered extensively in our local newspaper, the Times-Colonist.)

The purpose of life is to be happy, according to the Dalai Lama. I suspect that anything that adds to our happiness is to be supported and anything that detracts from it to be avoided. If we bless our food and our preparation of it and gathering of it we go a long way to supporting our physical health and awareness.

 

 

Mindfulness, awareness and paying increasing attention to our intuition may well be the major keys, not just to food choice and preparation, but to our unfolding into our greater selves.

Over the past few months, I have had many people approach me with claims regarding cannabis and its “health issues”. I would like to dispel these myths.

Fact One.
Cannabis Use Has Never Killed Anyone.

Unlike tobacco, petro chemicals, and various other inhalants, cannabis contains no toxicities, no substances proven to be damaging to the human body. In a recorded 5000 years of use, cannabis has never killed anyone.

Fact Two.
Cannabis Is Not A Gateway Drug.

After many government funded claims that cannabis is a doorway to harmful substances, the opposite is now proven true. Alcohol and tobacco are both legal and easy to obtain. They are also extremely addictive and health damaging, which is a direct influence towards hard substances. Cannabis has recently been trialled as an excellent “exit substance” helping addicts to leave their routines of substance abuse.

Fact Three.
Cannabis Is Not Chemically Addictive.

Anyone can build up an unhealthy habit of using anything. This includes eating, sleeping, watching television etc. This does not mean that the activity itself is addictive, it simply means that the user has built up a recurrent habit. Tobacco contains a chemical called nicotine, which is highly addictive. Cannabis does not contain one single addictive substance, and has been proven to have less habit forming qualities than sex, fatty foods, aspirin, coffee, and many other everyday items and activities. This wrong information is interpreted by those observing users smoking cannabis out of boredom.

“Because cannabis did not lead to physical dependence, it was found to be superior to the opiates for a number of therapeutic purposes. Birch, in 1889, reported success in treating opiate and chloral addiction with cannabis, and Mattison in 1891 recommended its use to the young physician, comparing it favourably with the opiates.”

Fact Four.
Cannabis Does Not Damage The Brain.

The original claims that cannabis killed brain cells came from an examination involving a group of monkeys receiving cannabis smoke through gas masks. These monkeys died from brain damage, which was associated with the cannabis smoke, with no scientific evidence to back these claims. This was later proven to be down to the lack of oxygen, resulting in cell death. The substances within cannabis have been in actual fact, proven to have the capability to aid cell growth within the brain, and are well documented as neuroprotective, meaning that cannabis actively protects the brain.

“Experiments on rats given a potent cannabinoid have shown the drug stimulates the growth of new brain cells. Canadian researchers found that the drug caused neurons to regenerate in the hippocampus, an area that controls mood and emotions, after one month of treatment.”

Fact Five.
Cannabis Does Not Cause Lung Cancer.

Cannabis was thought to have lung associated health risks because of the direct risks associated with smoking tobacco. Dr. Donald Tashkin was given the task of observing both users and none users, and the effects of cannabis on the lungs. What he, and many others have found, is that those who smoke cannabis halved their risk of lung cancer to what it would have been had they smoked tobacco alone. He also found that cannabis protected the lungs slightly more than the protection of a none smoker, meaning that cannabis does indeed protect the lungs. Cannabis is an excellent chest expectorant, irritating the lining of the lungs, allowing the user to cough up any tar associated with tobacco smoking.

“The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.” “We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use,” he said. “What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect.”

Fact Six.
Cannabis Does Not Cause Schizophrenia.

Cannabis has been proven to aid the symptoms of various mental and neurological conditions such as anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, autism, parkinsons disease, and even epilepsy. Cannabis has also been proven to stave off degenerative brain disorders such as alzheimers disease. The reason many think that cannabis causes schizophrenia, is because so many schizophrenia patients use the plant to relax their symptoms. This could in turn (if they are using a heavily psychoactive strain) aggravate one or two other symptoms, which is why so many dispensaries specialise in none psychoactive strains of cannabis.

Fact Seven.
Cannabis Is Not Illegal Due To Health Risks.

Before being made illegal, cannabis was a well respected plant. It had incredible potential within the medical and pharmaceutical industry. There were over 100 articles dedicated to the medical benefits of cannabis, and cannabis, then known as Indian hemp, was within most medications, and classed as psychologically safe. Hemp had also been classed as the number one cash crop with over 50,000 industrial uses. Hemp could create biodegradable fuel, resins and oils, lubricants, paints, varnishes, plastics, wood, it could even create concrete (hempcrete). After this explosion of interest, cannabis was swiftly made illegal at the advent of big investors and pharmaceutical companies, whom the plant would have affected financially. There are many theories, but the general facts remain the same. Cannabis, after 5000 years of medical use, was made illegal and deemed unsafe in order to protect pharmaceutical and industrial investors. Over time, with the release of the film “Reefer Madness” and much sexist and racist accusations of the plants use, many members of the public, including the medically trained, still to this day believe that cannabis is dangerous, when in reality, there is no existing evidence to suggest this is so.

“Many people assume that marijuana was made illegal through some kind of process involving scientific, medical, and government hearings; that it was to protect the citizens from what was determined to be a dangerous drug. The actual story shows a much different picture. Those who voted on the legal fate of this plant never had the facts, but were dependent on information supplied by those who had a specific agenda to deceive lawmakers. You’ll see below that the very first federal vote to prohibit marijuana was based entirely on a documented lie on the floor of the Senate.”

Fact Eight.
Cannabis Can Indeed Successfully Treat Cancer.

Many people when they hear this, imagine a chemotherapy patient smoking cannabis to relieve the treatments effects, this is true, but this is not what I am talking about. The active components within cannabis have been proven to combat cancer in numerous ways. Thus far, thousands of people whom have concentrated cannabis into oil form, have successfully treated their cancer, sending the disease into remission. This is becoming increasingly well known, but it is not as simple as smoking cannabis. When the plant is strained of its chemicals (cannabinoids), and slightly heated to decarboxilate these active substances, these cannabinoids can be concentrated into various types of extracts, most commonly cannabis oils (not hemp seed oil). This has a large success rate with a great deal of investigation currently underway. This technique does not have the side effects of chemotherapy, and also has a similar effect to Dr. Burynski’s cancer fighting “antineoplastons.”

“Many scientific studies have reported that various cannabinoids (both natural and synthetic) exert a wide range of growth-inhibiting effects on cancer cells, including:
– Triggering cell death, through a mechanism called apoptosis.
– Stopping cells from dividing.
– Preventing new blood vessels from growing into tumours –a process termed angiogenesis.
– Reducing the chances of cancer cells to metastasize through the body, by stopping cells from moving or invading neighbouring tissue.
– Speeding up the cell’s internal ‘waste disposal machine’ –a process known as autophagy – which can lead to cell death.”

Fact Nine.
Cannabis Could Aid World Poverty.

Cannabis can be grown in a variety of ways, in almost all conditions. It can be grown indoors or outdoors, specifically in tropical countries. Cannabis seeds are the most nutritious source of protein on earth, and contain a variety of natural omegas. The plant can be juiced wet, made into various extracts and medibles such as canna-butter, which allows all of the goodness without the high effect. It has been argued that a community could live off industrial hemp and medical cannabis. This one plant could provide effective medicine, as well as vast material uses. The cultivation of hemp could provide work and trade, and the communities could provide themselves with housing, with very little help. Cannabis is also anti fungal, anti bacterial, anti spasmodic, anti depressant, and could be used to prevent and to treat a variety of the common ailments third world communities suffer with. The money it would take to end world hunger is roughly what the world military spends in eight days, there will always be poverty, but most could easily be aided.

“The inside of the hemp seed, also known as the hempnut, is rich in both protein and oil. And the oil is one of the richest sources of essential fatty acids (EFAs). You may choose to eat the entire seed, or only the hempnut, or to press the oil out of the seed and use the oil and the meal (the rest) separately. Hemp is a great source of protein. Although it does not have as much protein as soy, the spectrum of amino acids in it makes it a more digestible source of vegetable protein. As well, hemp is not genetically modified, unlike most soy. Hemp oil is equally remarkable. It contains approximately 56% Omega 6 or Linoleic Acid (LA), 20% Omega 3 or Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) and 3% gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Hemp is one of only two plants known to contain all three of these vital nutrients.”

Fact Ten.
Cannabis Would Aid Communities And The Economy.

Due to the obvious losses inherited by pharmaceutical industries, many believe cannabis would damage the economy. I ask you, as a community, what do we want for our economy? Safe medicine, safe food, healthy people, economic trade, increased job availability, decreased crime, these are all factors that could be so if cannabis were legal. If cannabis dispensaries were set up specifically for patient via the NHS, if recreational cannabis was taxed and sold, if individuals were allowed to obtain and use cannabis without trouble from the law, our community would be much safer. The reason cannabis works as a medicine, is because our bodies naturally create very similar hormones to the plants cannbinoids, in order to regulate our bodies and our cells. When these “endogenous cannabinoids” fall off balance, we become prone to disease. The only substance on earth which contains these cannabinoids is cannabis, and by keeping the plant illegal, we actively encourage endo-cannabinoid deficiency, which scientifically is the route of all disease. Cannabis is a natural nutrient, and with such knowledge of cannabis ability to save the poor and the ill, keeping this plant illegal is outright genocide.

“The recent identification of cannabinoid receptors and their endogenous lipid ligands has triggered an exponential growth of studies exploring the endocannabinoid system and its regulatory functions in health and disease. Such studies have been greatly facilitated by the introduction of selective cannabinoid receptor antagonists and inhibitors of endocannabinoid metabolism and transport, as well as mice deficient in cannabinoid receptors or the endocannabinoid-degrading enzyme fatty acid amidohydrolase.”

Unlike the regular flu bug which is bad enough, this new form of norovirus can live on hard surfaces for weeks. That means door handles, coffee makers, escalator handrails. Regular detergents don’t work on it. Hand sanitizers don’t kill it. It has a new and unique shape.

The regular flu bug is transmitted through the air and only lives for two to eight hours on hard surfaces. This new form can linger for weeks. Once affected, the symptoms come on quickly, within hours of being exposed.

                                             Effective Protocols for the Flu

 

1. Wash Your Hands. Regular medicine and alternative therapists agree on this one. Consider stepping it up with this new norovirus now ripping through America. (It started in Australia, so it may hit your corner of the world as well.)

 

2.Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. If possible, avoid close contact with those, who are sick and, if you are sick, avoid close contact with those who are well.

 

3. Exercise. No one disagrees that regular exercise can help the immune system to be more effective in fighting foreign pathogens. (Over exercise, though, can decrease immune functions. See Protocol #19 in The Zen of Joy for more on this:http://www.zenofjoy.com )

 

4. The Flu "Shot" Will Not Work. Not against this new bug. While there is disagreement about whether flu shots work well against other strains of the bug, there is none about this strain.

 

5. Reduce Stress. If your body is having to deal with stress, there are fewer resources left over to deal with invading bugs. Laughter is the #1 stress reducer. The trick is it takes 10-15 minutes of sustained laughter to produce enough of the "feel-good" hormones like endorphins to crowd out the stress hormones. 6. Get Plenty of Rest. Again, if your body is tired, it will be harder to fight the bugs.

 

7. Optimize Your Friendly Bacteria. Regular use of fermented foods as well as high quality probiotics can radically optimize the function of your immune response.

 

8. Reduce Sugar and Processed Foods. Fitness and health expert Jack Lalanne had a simple test for what to put in your mouth: "If man made it, don't eat it." Sugar for example, feeds the unfriendly bacteria.

 

9. Watch Your Vitamin D levels. Many "alternative' therapists believe flu "season" is nothing more or less than a lack of Vitamin D from less sunshine in the colder months. "According to the latest review by Carole Baggerly (Grassrootshealth.org), adults need about 8,000 IU's a day. Be sure to take vitamin K2 if you are taking high dose oral vitamin D as it has a powerful synergy and will help prevent any D toxicity." -Dr. Mercola. also from Dr. Mercola:


10. Take a High Quality Source of Animal-Based Omega-3 Fats. Increase your intake of healthy and essential fats like the omega-3 found in krill oil, which is crucial for maintaining health. It is also vitally important to avoid damaged omega-6 oils that are trans fats and in processed foods as it will seriously damage your immune response.

The two primary herbal ingredients are Lonicera and Forsythia (Jin Yin Hua and Lian Chiao). A more specific Chinese herbal formula for flu symptoms with muscle aching and sinus congestion is Gan Mao Ling. These are inexpensive and everyone would do well to stock these two formulas in your first aid kit.

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. Book Review

 

The author tells us that we are not truly happy unless we are doing what we are meant to do.

And what stops us is Resistance with a capital “R.”

“Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.”

Resistance is invisible. It comes from within us. It is insidious. It is Universal. It never sleeps. It plays for keeps. It is fueled by fear.

Procrastination is the Most Common Manifestation of Resistance.

The answer to procrastination is to start now, in this moment, to do our work.

Resistance shows up in trouble. It is easy for us to get into trouble….of all sorts. Trouble can show up as illness, addictions, being accident prone, screwing up, chronic lateness, cruelty to others. In fact, anything that calls attention to ourselves is a form of Resistance showing up in the guise of trouble.

Being a “Drama Queen” or being a victim are also Resistance showing up.

Resistance Feels Like Unhappiness.

Left unattended, unhappiness can build to become unendurable. We seek escape through dope, alcohol, tobacco, sex, drugs and rock and roll. Depression, aggression, dysfunction. These are not inevitable parts of life. They are Resistance manifesting in many different disguises.

Pressfield says that freedom is not easy. He points to what Socrates said: “…the truly free individual is free only to the extent of his own self-mastery. While those who will not govern themselves are condemned to find masters to govern over them.”

Fear is a Good Thing

Pressfield also says that fear is a good thing. “The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it.”

Wanting to be a star is a sure sign of Resistance. “The professional concentrates on the work and allows rewards to come or not come, whatever they like.”

Combat Resistance by Turning Pro.

A professional works. A professional commits. Full-time. A professional dedicates his life to his work.

Being a professional is not for sissies. Pressfield says a critical part of being pro is learning how to love being miserable. (!)

A pro works at his craft…every day…even and especially when he doesn’t feel like it. A pro is a craftsman, not a prima donna.

A pro loves what he does, but also knows how to keep a sense of distance or proportion. Not being addicted to an outcome, but committed to work, to mastering technique.

A pro does not take failure personally. He knows things change…every day. He endures.

Beyond Resistance: The Higher Realm.

The opposite of Resistance is “…those invisible psychic forces that support and sustain us in our journey toward ourselves.”

Pressfield calls these forces our muses and angels.

Goethe said: “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, magic, and power in it. Begin it now.”

Our angels want to help us. But they can only do so if we are helping ourselves by doing our work.

Pressfield talks about how cancers go into remission when people start on what they were meant to do. “Is it possible…that the disease itself evolved as a consequence of actions taken (or not taken) in our lives? Could our unlived lives have exacted their vengeance upon us in the form of cancer? And if they did, can we cure ourselves, now, by living these lives out?”

So, could it be that life keeps pushing us into living the life we were meant to live, not just for the sake of our own fulfillment and health, but also for the greater good, for the contribution we can make?

Pressfield: “Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It’s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don’t cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you’ve got.”

 

The War of Art is a short work. In can be a quick read. It is not necessarily a comfortable read as it throws light in areas we may have preferred to keep dark. It is a powerful work. Recommended.

Are You Hurting The Planet And Shaming The Angels?

Are you a born writer? Were you put on this earth to be a painter, a scientist, an apostle of peace? In the end the question can only be answered by action.

 

Do it or don’t do it.

 

It may help to think of it this way. If you were meant to cure cancer or write a symphony or crack cold fusion and you don’t do it, you not only hurt yourself, even destroy yourself. You hurt your children. You hurt me. You hurt the planet.

 

You shame the angels who watch over you and you spite the Almighty, who created you and only you with your unique gifts, for the whole purpose of nudging the human race one millimeter farther along its path back to God.

 

Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It’s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don’t cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you got.”

Commentary: Pressfield says that when you do not do what you were meant to do, you hurt yourself and even destroy yourself.

 

There are countless examples now of people with dis-eases who have healed when they got into action and starting doing things.

 

Who cares if the first things you do are not precisely what your “mission” is on the planet.

 

You can spend a lifetime navel-gazing trying to figure out what you were “meant to do.”

 

Just get into action. Do something. Follow your intuition. Try something. Listen to the feedback, i.e. what does it feel like? What is your gut telling you?

 

As long as you are serving with good intention and open heart, it is unlikely you will damage anyone, AND

 

It is likely that you will feel better having been of service.

 

Putting our focus on helping others helps us to heal whatever “dis-eases” we may be fomenting.

 

There is a saying: “If you feel down, go make someone else happy.”

 

This year, instead of making “New Year’s Resolutions,” why not ways to “stop hurting the planet and shaming the angels.” We can do that by taking action, listening to our intuition and continuing to move forward on our “mission.”

 

Here is a solid idea to implement. Buy a $50 voice recorder. Carry it with you. Whenever an idea comes up, record it right away so you won’t forget. Have it by your bedside so as you drift off to sleep and wake up from sleep and those ideas bubble up from your inner self, you can capture them.

 

Then, implement them! Intuition strengthens when you actually use the ideas. Conversely, intuition stops giving you ideas if you never use them.

 

You were having trouble making New Year’s resolutions? There you go. A concrete action plan to improve your life in 2013.

The Myth of Retirement. Part One. Don’t Retire. There are Better Goals in Life.

Retirement is a weird social experiment, a historical blip. Its collapse will be a triumph for common sense.

We are not meant to retire. There is nothing else in nature that retires. Plants and trees, animals and fish continue to grow…until they die.

Humans are the only ones, with their oversized brains, that have created this artificial state and goal of “taking it easy” when we get to a certain age.

We are not meant to “take it easy.” As we grow older, more knowledgeable and perhaps even wiser, we are meant to use the knowledge, the skill sets we have picked up and the wisdom to help others.

Instead, we as societies through our programming, have come to believe that older people are less useful. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The baby boomers, of which I am one, have been particularly aggressive in pursuing retirement and even early retirement. “Keeping up with the Jones’s” has come to mean the earlier you retire, the better off you are and the bigger bragging rights you have.

This goal and the attitudes around retirement are fraught with problems, with danger and these attitudes can even be deadly for a number of reasons.

First, with the economic challenges we are facing, the traditional retirement of the boomers’ parents may not even be possible. Pension plans, public and private, are in trouble and may indeed implode. In future tips, we will discuss the potential of high inflation and even possible hyperinflation and what it may mean for retirement plans. It is not a pretty picture.

In the nineties, I remember seeing a newspaper story of a Russian woman in the freezing streets of Moscow selling a wool sweater in order to buy food for her evening meal. The Russian currency had collapsed and her pension had been eaten up by inflation.

In future tips, you will see how the thought “It can’t happen here” is one of the more dangerous ones we could hold.

Regardless of what inflation we have in the future, the demographics work against a rosy retirement. There are just too many boomers to be supported by pensions which, by and large, are Ponzi schemes anyway.

The scheme has been working because of the number of boomers who have been contributing to a much smaller group of their parents who have retired. The generation following the boomers is far fewer in numbers and will not likely take to massive increases in their pension contributions to support, not themselves, but to their older generation, particularly as they too have been programmed to believe that old people are less than useful.

Further, as boomers downsize their homes as retirees tend to do, they may find they are not getting the dollars they were hoping for. By sheer weight of numbers, they will flood the market and the law of supply and demand has not been repealed, last time I checked. More supply than demand normally means lower prices. We have already seen what the punster call “a slowdown” in real estate sales and anecdotally I hear of people taking their houses off the market to wait for prices to recover. They may be waiting in vain.

So, market forces may be conspiring to make traditional retirement impossible for the boomers.

This may be the best thing that can happen. Why? Stay tuned.

One person asked what was the purpose of that exercise? She answered the question herself when she said: “It was painful not to smile.”

 

And that is the discovery that I made:

 

Our Normal Way Of Being Is Painful. Not Being Happy Is Actually Painful!

 

We are taught to be serious, because: “Life is serious, don’t you know. I have to earn a living and I’m stressed out. I have to bear down and work hard and there’s no a time to be frivolous.”

 

It’s painful to live this way! And when we are in pain, it’s hard to get things done.

The myth we have been programmed to believe is this: Work hard to achieve your goals and then you can be happy.

“Shop till you drop” seems to be the mantra to chase after that good feeling.

Imagine having such a strong smile that many people on the street smile back at you.

Not everyone is ready to let go of entrenched habits. Habits that may cause something less than joy.

Prisoners have to have one of the worst situations. Locked away, told what to do and when to do it every day.

Luis Gomez has a heart for doing Laughter Yoga in the penitentiary system in Mexico City. He has a very large goal of reaching out to every prisoner and to help empower them to tap into their inner happiness. The aim is in alignment with Laughter Yoga International to create World Peace starting with peace within ourselves.

 

Ideally, by practicing laughter yoga, prisoners will be reminded to make better choices for themselves…

 

In the Instituto Mexicano de Yoga de la Risa (Mexican Laughter Yoga Institute) we are convinced of the healing powers of this technique that gives the opportunity of empowering other human beings to remember that happiness exists within every single one of us, no matter the conditions in which we are, and from then on, we can establish harmonious relationships with the rest of the people…

 

In general the inmates are very grateful for all what they’ve got from the meetings. They said that they feel a refresher every time they do it. They feel free. They think that the exercise exercises help them to realize that they can cultivate their internal peace. If Laughter Yoga can work for prisoners in a Mexican jail to access their inner happiness, it just may work for you.

Laughter Helps in Cancer Prevention

 

Laughter Yoga works with the breath to open up to fuller and healthier breathing.

 

Dr. Otto Warburg, the President of the Institute of Cell Physiology and two times a Nobel Prize winner, says this:

 

“Deep breathing techniques increase oxygen to the cells and are the most important factors in living a disease-free and energetic life. When the cells get enough oxygen, cancer will not and cannot occur.

 

In fact, Laughter Yoga was inspired by a response to disease by an enlightened patient.

 

Founder Dr. Madan Kataria read about Norman Cousins who laughed himself back to health.

 

Cousins was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a painful form of arthritis.

 

Many die from this disease. The pain can be so great that sleep can become impossible.

 

Cousins decided to go out laughing!

 

So, he brought in Marx Brothers movies into his hospital room and started laughing.

 

Norman Cousins laughed himself back to health

“Told that he had little chance of surviving, Cousins developed a recovery program incorporating megadoses of Vitamin C, along with a positive attitude, love, faith, hope, and laughter induced by Marx Brothers films.

 

"I made the joyous discovery that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me at least two hours of pain-free sleep," he reported. "When the pain-killing effect of the laughter wore off, we would switch on the motion picture projector again and not infrequently, it would lead to another pain-free interval."

Matti Anttila CLYT (Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher)is the author of “The Zen of Joy” and “108 Tips for More Joy, Energy and Health.”

Long before I read that quote, I decided not to go a traditional route.

 

Working hard to age 65, retiring exhausted and then dying shortly thereafter was not an appealing career path.

 

Thus, I pursued a number of opportunities as they came up: Promoting rock and roll performances, driving taxi, Disc Jockey, radio reporter and talk show host.

 

I have owned a bakery and restaurant, been a financial planner, baby photographer and most recently a consultant.

 

My most passionate interest is in health, fitness, longevity and human potential.

 

It seems many of us humans only realize a small portion of our full potential.

 

Hence, Laughter Yoga, which can help to free us of many of the blocks to creativity and our potential.

P.S #1: It’s possible that you may have some lingering feeling of guilt about feeling good. That’s understandable when so many suffer. After all, there are wars, famine, environmental degradation and a host of ills we read and hear about daily. However, the latest scientific studies show that we may have our best chance of addressing the challenges of the modern world by first being happy.

 

For example, Shawn Achor, in his book The Happiness Advantage, quotes studies showing that doctors make 19% fewer errors in diagnosis when they are happy, there is a 31% boost in productivity in workers who are happy, administrative personnel have 19% fewer mistakes when they are happier and salespeople make 37% more sales in a happy state.  So, it turns out your best chance of really making a difference in this world may well be focusing on your own happiness or joy first.

 

This is not to say that we should become selfish in a way that excludes others. As you will learn in one of the protocols, the process of giving to others is one of the sure-fire ways to quickly increase our own joy.

Laughter Yoga:

 

Is efficient exercise (One minute of hearty laughter is equal to 10 minutes of rowing or jogging -Dr. W. Fry, Journal of General Psychology, 1938)

 

Is the most fun you can have standing up (subjective opinion)

 

Feels good (as reported by many laughers around the world)

 

Improves circulation (movement of the diaphragm causes more oxygen to be sent to the cells)

 

Boosts the immune system (as most exercise does really)

 

Stimulates digestion and internal organs (although if you’re busting a gut and rolling around on the floor, that’s the last thing you’ll be thinking about)

 

Helps with pain management (you may still have the pain, but you may be too busy laughing to think about it)

 

Slows the aging process (if you’re laughing, it means you’re still alive)

 

Smooths out wrinkles (maybe…I’ve still got mine…but I don’t care!)

 

Improves breathing (not sure about this one, sometimes it’s hard to catch my breath when I’m laughing so hard)

 

Makes you beautiful (hey, everyone is beautiful when they smile or laugh)

 

Makes you rich! (not really, but sometimes we can’t imagine how any rich person could possibly feel better than we do after a laughter session!)

 

Isn’t that enough already? What, you want it to cure cancer too? Well, as a matter of fact, read this quote from Dr. Otto Warburg, president of the Institute for Cell Physiology, and twice a Nobel Prize winner:

 

Deep breathing techniques increase oxygen to the cells and are the most important factors in living a disease-free and energetic life. When cells get enough oxygen, cancer will not and cannot occur.” (My italics)

Meditation Key To Matthieu Ricard’s Happiness Success

 

How You Can Get the Same Results…in Only Minutes a Day

    Meditation 'completely changes your brain and therefore changes what you are', says 66-year-old

 

    He says you can do it too by learning how to let your thoughts drift”

Neuroscientist Richard Davidson reports that when Ricard meditated on compassion his level of gamma waves, those linked to consciousness, attention, learning and memory, hade never been “reported before in the neuroscience literature.”

 

Ricard believes meditation can alter the brain and improve people's happiness in the same way that lifting weights puts on muscle.

 

Here are some of his tips from his book The Art of Meditation published by Atlantic Books: (my bolding)

 

    A healthy mind should act like a mirror – faces can be reflected in a glass but none of them stick. Use the same technique with thoughts – let them pass through your mind but don't dwell.

 

     It's impossible to stop thoughts from coming but focusing on a particular sound or the breath going in and out calms the mind, giving greater clarity. Controlling the mind is not about reducing your freedom, it's about not being a slave to your thoughts. Think of it as directing your mind like a boat rather than drifting.

 

    Be mindful – pay attention to the sensations of your breath going in and out. If you notice your mind wandering simply bring it back to focusing on your breath. This is known as mindfulness. You can apply it to other sensations to bring you into the 'now' rather than dwelling on the past or future. You could focus instead  on heat, cold and sounds that you hear.

 

    Once you've achieved some skill in this you can use that to cultivate qualities such as kindness, or dealing with disturbing emotions. He says everyone has felt all-consuming love but usually it lasts for about 15 seconds, but you can hold on and nurture this vivid feeling by focusing on it in meditation. If you feel it becoming vague you can consciously revive it.

 

    Like when playing the piano, practising the feeling for 20minutes has a far greater impact over time than a few seconds.  Regular practise is also needed like watering a plant.

 

    You can then use meditation to gain some space from negative emotions. Ricard says: 'You can look at your experience like a fire that burns. If you are aware of anger you are not angry you are aware. Being aware of anxiety is not being anxious it is being aware.' By being aware of these emotions you are no longer adding fuel to their fire and they will burn down.

 

    You will see benefits in stress levels and general wellbeing as well as brain changes with regular practise in a month. Those who say they don't have enough time to meditate should look at the benefits: 'If it gives you the resources to deal with everything else during the other 23 hours and 30 minutes, it seems a worthy way of spending 20 minutes,' Ricard says.

I Want to Simplify My Life!

“I would like to simplify my life.”

 

62% of those surveyed in a 1992 study by the Merck Family Fund agreed with that statement. Yet, most people don’t make any effort at all to simplify their lives. And that is even when “not having enough time” is the number one problem in their lives. They continue their disorganized ways and refuse to change, which means the condition of not having enough time will not change either.

How to Find Your Passionate Work

This is the protocol I used to decide on a career. It works like a charm and you won't need any expensive courses or seminars. This takes care of it all. Ready?

1) Brainstorm….that means no allow no restriction to enter while you do this. Write out everything, but EVERYTHING you like and/or love to do. Do not try to connect it to making money or to anything else. Just write down EVERYTHING you like to do…in any order…just write and don't stop, keep going until you have written down absolutely everything you like or love to do. Don’t take the pen off the page or your fingers off the keyboard. Just keep writing until it is ALL down.

2) Now (and only now) prioritize them, giving them numbers from 1 to 20 or whatever.

3) Take #1 and brainstorm what you could do to make money from the thing love most to do. List at least 20! Again, this is brainstorming. The definition of brainstorming is that there are no wrong ideas. If it sound silly or impractical or both, it doesn’t matter. Just keep writing and put down everything that comes to mind. Do not allow your inner censor into the game at this point. There will be time for that later. One crazy and nuts idea might lead to another one and another one and it may lead to light bulb idea or a connection of ideas put together that may be JUST the ticket.

4) Take #2 and do the same, and

5) Do the same for #3.

You now have 60 things you can do to make money from stuff you love to do. Brainstorming means TURNING OFF the inner voice that interjects things like…"Oh but you can't do THAT" BE TOTALLY FREE whilst listing each list of 20.

When I did this decades ago, I couldn't find anything I really wanted to do from my list of 20 for the thing I liked most to do (sex), so I went to #2 (making money) and that, boys and girls, is the true story of how I had a 15 year career as a financial planner…and quite a ride is was too.
