Dr. Martin Blaser has studied the role of bacteria in our lives for more than thirty years.

 

(He is the director of the Human Microbiome Program at New York University, served as Chair of Medicine at NYU and is the President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and has had major advisory roles at the National Institute of Health. He has had more than a hundred media appearances, CNN, BBC, NPR, The Today Show, Good Morning America to list a few.)

 

His 2014 book Missing Microbes sounds the alarm about the overuse of antibiotics.

 

Obesity Epidemic Caused by Missing Microbes in Our Bodies?

 

His research tells us that the modern plagues may be a direct result. This includes the obesity epidemic.

 

“In 1990, about 12 percent of Americans were obese. By 2010, the national average was about 30 percent…as of 2008, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.5 billion adults were overweight; of these, over 200 million men and 300 million women qualified as obese. Many of these people live in developing countries that we associate more with famine than with overeating.”

 

Personally, I have noticed this. When I visited my home country of Finland in 1978 and 1982, there were few grossly overweight people. This has changed now. In my most recent trips over the last few years, I see many overweight and obese people on the street. One can’t help but notice the difference now.

 

Overeating Can’t Explain it All

 

“…high caloric intake, while definitely not helpful, is not sufficient to explain the distribution or course of the worldwide obesity epidemic.”

 

Until reading this book, I had named High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) as the culprit. It is in way too many foods and has a unique quality: it turns off the “satiety switch.” In other words, if you eat food with HFCS in it, you never feel satisfied and may continue to eat way more than is healthy.

 

I still think this is a factor, but Dr. Blaser has uncovered another far more insidious cause for “…this accumulation of body fat that has been accelerating not over the course of a few centuries, but in a mere two decades.”

“…obesity, childhood diabetes, asthma, hay fever, food allergies, esophageal reflux…cancer, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, autism, eczema.”?

 

Let’s explore some of these to get more of a handle on what’s going on all around us.

 

More Than Five Fold Increase in Diabetes

 

“In Finland, where record keeping is meticulous, the incidence (of type 1 diabetes) has risen 550 percent since 1950…the average age of diagnosis used to be about nine. Now it is around six, and some children are becoming diabetic when they are three.”

 

Asthma Cases Increasing

 

“One in twelve people…had asthma in 2009, compared with one in fourteen a decade earlier.”

 

Allergies Rampant

 

“Food allergies are everywhere…milk, eggs, soy, fish, fruits—you name it, someone is allergic to it. Celiac disease…is rampant. Ten percent of children suffer from hay fever…In industrialized nations, the number of kids with eczema has tripled in the past thirty years.

 

These disorders suggest that our children are experiencing immune dysfunction never seen before, as well as conditions such as autism…”

 

Adults Not Escaping

 

“Nor are adults escaping…The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, is rising, wherever we look.”

 

“Could there be one underlying cause fueling all these parallel increases?”

 

Our “Friendly Bacteria” Are Under Attack

 

The degradation of our microbiomes (healthy community of beneficial bacteria in the body) may be responsible for the surging rates of these and many other chronic health problems.

 

Blaser says: “We’re really assaulting our microbiome… Right now, everyone is giving antibiotics, thinking they are ‘free.’ Once there is evidence that they have costs, the calculation begins to change.”

 

Real Cause of Ulcers? Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)

 

Here is an example you may have heard of. An Australian doctor, Barry Marshall, discovered that ulcers were caused by Helicobacter pylori. It took years for his work to be accepted. Once it was, doctors around the world used antibiotics to rid the body of this supposedly nasty bacteria. Many sufferers were relieved of their ulcers. So far, so good. What’s the problem?

 

 Pylori Helps Prevent Disease too.

This is a Problem, as we Have Been Destroying it!

 

As Dr. Blaser dug deeply into this bacteria with his experiments, he found that it also plays a beneficial function in our bodies.

 

To put it simply, he and others found that those without H. pylori bacteria in their gut were much more likely to suffer from acid reflux or GERD and from asthma!

 

Its absence may also explain why we have grown taller and fatter in recent decades.

 

We Are Now More Susceptible to Infections

 

Further…”…increased susceptibility to new infections is one of the hidden costs of antibiotic use.” In 1985, there was a massive outbreak of Salmonella in Chicago. 160,000 people became ill, several died. Authorities traced it to milk from one dairy.

 

Following the outbreak, the health department did a study of 50 people who had become ill and 50 who had not. They found that those who had taken antibiotics in the month before becoming ill were five and a half times more likely to become ill than people who drank the milk but had not taken antibiotics recently.

“This is the greatest danger before us: pathogens causing an epidemic against which we are helpless. Ecological theory tells us that the people whose resident bacteria have been disrupted the most will be the most vulnerable. All things being equal, the asthmatic, the obese, and those with the modern epidemic diseases will be the ones at highest risk to succumb.”

Solutions

 

The challenge is that we probably know only a fraction of the different types of bacteria that inhabit a healthy and pristine person at birth.

 

A researcher helicoptered into a remote Amazon tribe who had not had any contact with the modern world. She was able to obtain stool samples and bring them back to her lab for analysis. What she discovered was an astounding array of bacteria, some in very small quantities. Bacteria that no longer exist in our guts in the modern world.

 

So, hoping to get back to that state is next to impossible for us.

 

What we CAN do, though, is to inhabit as wide a variety of “probiotics” in our guts as possible. I would not rely on bottled probiotics alone. Perhaps it would be wise to ingest as many different types of fermented foods as possible.

 

These would include:

 

Cultured Dairy Products: Kefir & Yogurt

 

Non-Dairy Alternatives: These products are a good option if you think you have a sensitivity to dairy products: Coconut kefir, Coconut yogurt

 

Fermented Beverages: Kombucha, Kvas, Rejuvelac

 

Fermented Vegetables: Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), Fermented Carrots, Radishes

Natto (fermented soybeans)

 

Kimchi is a fermented dish that is an important part of a traditional Korean diet. Kimchi consists of a mix of a variety of vegetables and spices. Cabbage is typically a main ingredient, as is some fish.

 

Avoid Factory Meat and Dairy

 

“Today, an estimated 70-80 percent of all antibiotics sold in the United States are used for the single purpose of fattening up farm animals: hundreds of millions of cattle, chicken, turkeys, pigs, sheep, geese, ducks, and goats. In 2011, animal producers bought nearly 30 million pounds of antibiotics, the largest amount yet recorded, for their livestock.”

 

Watch Your Water Source

 

“Millions of us are exposed every day and not just from foods. Antibiotics are found in our water…Current water purification treatments…do not fully remove antibiotics. A 2009 study in several cities in Michigan and Ohio found antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes in all source waters, drinking water from treatment plants, and tap water. The amounts were small, with the greatest levels in tap water. The point is it all adds up.”

Surprisingly, fear of public speaking comes in second, not first as is commonly thought.

As we might expect, some folks have fears that are so intense, it freezes them or disables them in some aspect of their lives.

 

Some may have only slight sensitivities or anxieties or apprehensions that cause only minor discomfort. Instead of debilitating fear, they may worry or fret, fuss or stew.

 

The challenge is that even these slight sensitivities or worries can cause an ongoing, below the surface, unconscious stress. And stress, as you may have heard, is not a good thing for our health.

 

Question: Would it not be great to have no fears, to be “fearless?”

 

How can we lessen the debilitating effects of our fears, once we recognize them?

 

I am told hypnosis can work.

 

As for the public speaking fear, Toastmasters has worked for many.

 

I now belong to this fine non-profit organization that helps individuals overcome fear of public speaking. I can attest to the power of positive input.

 

Toastmasters founder Ralph Smedley hit a bulls-eye when he created a system of giving lots of positive feedback to individuals. It works.

 

Wikipedia: “Ralph C. Smedley (February 22, 1878 – September 11, 1965) was the founder of Toastmasters International, an international speaking organization with more than 313,000 members in 126 countries and more than individual 14,650 clubs.”

 

Soon after joining, it became evident that Toastmasters was about way more than overcoming fear of public speaking.

 

Leadership skills are another added benefit as well as increased self-confidence.

Ebola: Is the “Cure” Worse Than the Disease?

 

You have “very, very little risk” of contracting Ebola.

 

That’s according to Craig Manning, a member of the Center for Disease Control’s Viral Special Pathogens branch.

 

Manning says: “People need to understand that unless they are in contact with infectious bushmeat or unless they are involved in the care and treatment of an Ebola patient at home, or in a hospital where gloves are not used – perhaps in a remote, rural clinic – anybody who was not one of those three groups basically had very, very little risk.”

 

So, why are we being absolutely inundated with this story every day in every medium: TV, radio, newspapers, the internet?

 

Follow the Money

 

As with many stories, let’s ask where is the money being made here?

 

Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Society posted a Facebook article about this. (For those on FB, see: https://www.facebook.com/captpaulwatson/posts/10152715018470932 )

 

Watson points out:

 

  • TEKMIRA Pharmaceuticals holds a patent on a vaccine against Ebola.
  • Monsanto has recently bought a large position in TEKMIRA.
  • TEKMIRA has a $140 million contract with the U.S. military for Ebola treatment drugs.

From Watson’s post: “It is always suspicious when profits surge as hysteria over some new disease is hyped. Vaccine manufacturers made billions off the overly-exaggerated swine flu “epidemic” that did not happen and tens of millions of dollars in stockpiled swine flu vaccines that had to be destroyed by governments that panicked and purchased them with the taxpayers loss, being the pharmaceutical companies gain.”

 

 

“More ominously there is a very real potential for the “cure” to be more lethal than the disease if the entire U.S. population becomes the lab animals for an untested Monsanto TEKMIRA vaccine enforced through Federal legislation at the point of a gun from the military.

 

Number of Ebola Deaths since 1976: 7,997

Number of Malaria deaths since 1976: 100 million

Number of Tuberculosis deaths since 1976. 40 million

Number of Influenza deaths since 1976: 19 million

Number of Measles deaths since 1976: Estimated 20 million

 

It is estimated that malaria throughout history has killed over 50 billion people making it the number one killer of human beings over all other diseases and wars combined.

 

Tuberculosis is especially lethal to patients already suffering from HIV killing around 1 million HIV patients last year.

 

We need to keep our priorities straight.”

 

Did you catch the point about enforced vaccination?

Forced vaccinations so Monsanto and TEKMIRA can make their billions.

How to be an Expert

 

Read 3 books on the subject.

 

That’s it.

 

 

 

Motivational speaker and author Craig Valentine says very few people read these days. The average person reads only one or a few books a year.

 

If you read three books on a subject, you will know more than at least 90% of people on that subject.

 

Here’s an example from my life. When I saw the author of The Wheat Belly interviewed on CBS, I got his book from the library and read it. It was so fascinating, I also picked up Grain Brain by David Perlmutter.

 

With my appetite whetted, I continued on with the granddaddy of the Paleolithic Diet Loren Cordain’s book The Paleo Diet. This was followed by Primal Body, Primal Mind by Nora Gedgaudas, Perfect Health Diet by Paul and Shou-Ching Jaminet and finally The Wahls Protocol by Dr. Terry Wahls.

 

While I certainly do not claim to be an expert now on gluten and the Paleo diet, I learned a lot. Enough to make changes that are making a positive and useful impact on my life.

 

Who cares really what others think? What does it matter if someone else labels you an expert or not? The important thing is that we improve our lives, is it not?

 

If then, in sharing some things we have learned, we may improve others lives, why that’s a bonus.

 

So, to know more about a subject than 90% of others, read three books on it.

 

Simple, yes? Now, go out and do it.

 

Choose a subject you have curiosity about. You may find some passion for that subject once you dive into.

Healing to the Core with Sound. Mastery Newsletter Update October 6, 2014

What if music and sound is the core of our being?

 

Some think music is frivolous. It is to be enjoyed in the evenings after all the work is done and then only occasionally.

 

What if everything in the universe is vibration? What if nothing is solid, but, at its core, an energetic essence?

 

What if all our modern afflictions from the “diseases of civilization” such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and so on, are energetic imbalances?

 

Could our modern day anxieties  also be imbalances? Worry about the planet, about the wars, anxiety about our careers, our money, our relationships…what if they too, are energetic imbalances?

 

Could music and harmonic sound help to heal all these?

 

This is the question I pondered after attending Matthew Kocel’s “concert” recently here in Victoria (BC, Canada).

 

From his website: “Matthew Kocel is a throat singer, healer and musical visionary driven by his mission to inspire unity through the universal language of music and sacred sound.

 

The harmonic overtones of his voice – two, three, or more notes at the same time – vibrate the core of your being with extraordinary sensations, awakening a deep spiritual presence beyond words.”

 

Matthew shook me to the core. Energy was released…as if the layers of an onion were peeled. Emotions were brought up to be released. I had a part to play, of course. My part was to do the releasing.

 

What helped was his four hour Qigong training. That training immediately boosted the “chi” or vital energy.

 

It was and is palpable. It is a feeling of solidity.

 

The challenge naturally is to keep it going. How many of us have attended workshops and seminars, felt great and over time, that feeling dissipates as we re-enter the modern busy world.

 

Matthew’s “take home” message and exercises address that. All I have to do is to do it…i.e. continue the daily practices he taught us all yesterday.

When we “plug in” to our “Mission in life” we enjoy a lifetime of fun.

 

Kind of like what Joseph Campbell said: “Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where before there were only walls.”

 

As Deepak Chopra points out in his meditation series, our “MISSION” need not be some capitalized big deal.

 

It may be that our mission at this moment is to help a friend through a tough time. It might just be to nurture ourselves by getting a massage.

 

Helping a friend allows us to feel as if we are making a worthwhile contribution.

 

Getting a massage allows us to feel good.

 

Either can move us toward a connection with our deeper selves and a connection with another or others. AND a connection to the Divine, or universal energy flow.

 

When we “get” this, we can choose to enjoy whatever we are doing.

 

It may be that our work has not been fulfilling. We can choose to make it so, just by MAKING THE CHOICE. By internally changing the attitude we bring to the task at hand.

 

Imagine a sink full of dishes when you wake up…every morning!

 

That’s what I saw in my first apartment away from my parents’ home.

 

It was disheartening and nothing to look forward to.

 

In an inspired moment, I realized that I could choose to like dishwashing. In that moment, I chose to do so.

 

As a result, I created a habit to wash my dishes right after each meal. Truth be told, I actually wash during preparation.

 

I enjoy it because I choose to enjoy it. I also enjoy the results: a clean and tidy kitchen. This feedback from the world of my kitchen (something outside of myself), gives me a brighter outlook on life.

 

It sets me up and allows me to enjoy my day more.

 

I can also choose to follow my own example and CHOOSE to enjoy any and all tasks before me at any time.

 

Do you others (perhaps you) could also choose to enjoy whatever is in front of them?

 

To view the task as part of my “mission in life” right now?

 

Do you think this kind of attitude might be useful in growing and learning?

5 Ways We Connect With Others Through Laughter

By now you’re probably aware that Denmark ranks #1 for reported levels of happiness, but what are the contributing factors to this happiness? Many experts cite a high level of social cohesion as just one of the many reasons attributed to the Danish happiness – many Danes belong to social clubs and participate in volunteer work. This is why I turned to Thomas Flindt, laughter expert and author of Happy Lemons, to find inspiration on how to use laughter to connect with others – everyone from family to strangers.

LAUGHTER IN LOVE

When we are in love, we simply laugh more – we communicate our love with laughter. Thomas believes this is true because when we are in love, we are living more in the present moment and we use laughter to express our acceptance and feelings towards the other person.

If you are still searching for your one and only, laughter can help you there too. Laughter provides positive energy vibrations which attract other positive people to you – you get what you vibrate! Laughter also increases the blood flow to the blood capillaries in your skin, giving it a nice glow and thus making you more attractive.

LAUGHTER IN FRIENDSHIPS

Laughter opens your heart – it is difficult to hate the person you are laughing with. Over our lives, many of the strongest friendships we make are with the people we have shared good times with. When we laugh, our bodies produce a whole range of good hormones such as oxytocin which creates a brilliant environment for us to bond with others. Laughter is therefore the perfect shortcut to building a stronger sense of connectedness no matter where we find ourselves.

LAUGHTER IN THE FAMILY

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the stresses of everyday life, but laughter can alleviate much of this stress and promote well-being and relaxation. Laughter lightens our moods, and the moods of those nearest to us, so incorporating humour into our family lives can brighten the connection we have with those we see everyday.

Laughter also improves relationships with the children in our families (whether they are our children or young cousins, nieces, nephews, etc.). I remember that I was always able to communicate with my younger cousins who didn’t speak English through the shared experience of laughter. LAUGHTER AT WORK

Danes don’t generally talk to strangers in public, so this tip is inspired by my own American upbringing. One of the best ways to connect with strangers is to make them laugh. People enjoy others who can make them laugh; it all goes back to those positive energy vibrations and how much more open we become when we laugh. Sugar Kills.

 

You may know that white sugar is a pure chemical= C12,H22,O11. Does that make it a drug?

 

Arab doctors used sugar as medicine 1,000 years ago. It was used as a medicine of last resort. When all else failed, they would administer 2 to 3 grains of sugar and often the patient would revive. (Source: Sugar Blues, by William Dufty)

 

How much do we consume of this powerful drug-like substance in our modern world? 130 pounds per person per year.

 

Do you think this might be a problem?

 

Here are some of the challenges sugar throws at your body.

 

It makes your brain think you haven’t eaten. You continue to feel hungry even though your belly is full. This is according to endocrinologist Robert Lustig, MD, author of Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease.

 

Sugar makes you age faster. The fructose, a simple sugar in the complex sugar known as white sugar, speeds up the rate of cell death. This contributes to chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

 

Sugar feeds cancer. This is a highly controversial area and not everyone agrees. My take? Why take a chance.

 

Sugar makes your liver fat. When you flood the liver with sugar, it has no choice but to turn it into liver fat. So what? A 2012 study in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition found people who ate 1,000 extra calories of sugary foods saw just a 2 percent increase in body weight, but a 27 percent increase in liver fat. This can lead to:

 

Fatty Liver Disease (the non-alcoholic variety).

 

Sugar makes you an addict. Eating sugar gives you a feeling of pleasure. But, as you eat more and more, you need more and more to get that pleasure. Does that sound like a heroin or hard drug addict? Might sugar actually be a “hard drug?” It seems to act like one. If it quacks like a duck…

 

 

Cutting back on sugar has a limited usefulness. We actually need to totally cut out fructose for two weeks to allow the body to recover from the onslaught of sugar’s attack.

Laughter is Freedom

 

The system has us trapped in a cage. It is the belief that we need stimulation from outside of us in order to trigger laughter.

 

We have been programmed to believe that unless we hear a joke or a humorous story, the laughter is not “real.”

 

If we laugh for no reason, it must be fake laughter. And that somehow makes US fake, or fakers. If we fake laughter, we must be faking our lives and we must be faking our personal relationships. We are not to be trusted.

 

All this is under the surface, not in our conscious minds, but held as subconscious beliefs.

 

Kids laugh a lot more than we as adults do. (Not the 400 times that is often quoted, but still, a lot of more.) They laugh AT things too and they are READY to laugh at the drop of a hat. Until we adult “shepherds” train them to do otherwise. We say: “What are you laughing at?” often enough that they pick up the story line and start to feel self conscious about their laughter. Slowly but surely, they hold back their natural joy at living and laughing.

 

Laughter Yoga is the process of unlearning all that adult, so called “grown up” behaviour. It is releasing the belief that we must have an outside stimulus in order to laugh. It is stepping out of the energetic “cage” of subconscious beliefs.

 

Laughter Yoga is the reconnection with our child-like nature, with our joy of living, with the power of releasing our loving selves and allowing our vulnerabilities to show.

 

Our TRUE power is in our vulnerability.

 

Our TRUE power is in stepping into the flow the life energy that is ever new in every moment.

 

Our TRUE power is in letting go.

 

Our TRUE power resides in our “yin” or female, yielding selves rather than our “yang” or male, dominating selves. (We need both of course, but the balance has been upset and we, as a society, have been seduced into rejecting the yin in favour of the yang…way too much.)

 

Laughter is letting go. It is joy. It is healing. It is connecting more easily to others. (“Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” –Victor Borge)

 

Laughter Yogis and Yoginis experience this regularly during Laughter Yoga sessions. The smiles and good feelings following a Laughter Yoga sessions are testament to the peace-inducing power of laughter.

 

Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga, has set a lofty goal: World Peace through Laughter.

 

At times like these, with war drums beating, it may seem like a pipe-dream. I believe at times like these, we need to focus more strongly on our laughter practice and help the world to lighten up, realize we are all together on this small planet and find ways to get along.

 

Laughter can be and is part of the solution to world peace.

New Year Intentions: Mastery Newsletter September 1, 2014

Labour Day always feels like the beginning of a new year. Better to celebrate the NEW YEAR here than in the middle of winter, methinks.

 

Is it a good time to make some resolutions? and/or intentions to go forward into the fall?

 

For me, I have been reading and studying health and food a lot more this year. I commit to making notes for myself from the latest four books to create a plan going forward. (These books are THE PALEO DIET by the grandfather of Paleo, Loren Cordain, PRIMAL BODY PRIMAL MIND by Nora Getgaudas, PERFECT HEALTH DIET by Paul Jaminet and Shou-Ching Jaminet and THE WALHS PROTOCOL by Dr. Terry Wahls.)

 

These all contain much pithy info and I will fine tune/tailor the info for my situation. (I will be sure to share the notes with you, my dear and valued reader of MASTERY NEWSLETTER.)

 

Also, as we know by now, emotional factors are a huge issue in health and longevity as well.

 

Recently, my friend (and fellow author) Kristina Sisu did a clearing for me. I have homework from that session to integrate into my daily routine. I recommend her book and her clearings: HOW TO GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY: http://kristinasisu.com/

 

I am further inspired by this 91 year old yogini who practices 45 minute of yoga first thing every morning. She also writes tango music, dances the tango and is a trapeze artist!! Age is just a number to her. She indicates in this interview that she is doing thing just like she did in her 20s and 30s. Awesome.

 

It is all too easy to fall prey to the slowing down we are encouraged at every turn to do as we age. (“Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”)

Smile: It May Save Your Life

 

Can a smile be the difference between life and death?

 

There is evidence now that our bodies create different hormonal substances/chemicals depending on the shape of our mouths!

 

This is astounding news.

 

You mean to say that just turning up the corners of our mouths to simulate a smile and our bodies respond with a cascade of the “feel good” hormones such as endorphins?

 

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying.

 

Let’s consider the opposite: a frown. This may be deadly.

 

The Permanent Down-Mouth

 

The opposite to pulling up the corners of the mouth to show happiness is pulling both corners downward to show the Down-Mouth expression. This is done by the person who feels unhappy, despondent, depressed, angry or tense. Unfortunately, if a person holds these negative emotions throughout their lifetime, the corners of the mouth will set into a permanent down position.

 

In later life, this can give a person an appearance similar to a bulldog. Studies show that we stand further away from people who have this expression, give them less eye contact and avoid them when they are walking towards us. If you discover that the Down-Mouth has crept into your repertoire, practice smiling regularly, which will not only help you avoid looking like an angry canine in later life, but will make you feel more positive. Robin Williams committed suicide. After I read the above article, I watched some videos of his performances that showed up as tributes to him.

 

Whenever he would finish a hilarious “bit,” the corners of his mouth came back to their “go to” position, which was turned down! This is something that I did not notice until I read the article above.

 

I hasten to add, this is not a scientific study by any means. Still, I now wonder if the hormone/chemical production in his body was overwhelmingly of the depressive type BECAUSE of his habitual turning down of the corners of his mouth?

 

He created much laughter and joy for his audience. It appears he did not know how to create that same joy in his own body.

 

What is the habitual and “go to” position for the corners of YOUR mouth?

 

Are the corners of your mouth pointing down more? Or are they pointing up more?

 

If down, do you have the ability to make a choice to point them up more? Whenever you think about it, why not experiment?

 

What have you got to lose?

 

I wonder if this one habit may not go a long way to lifting sadness and perhaps even depression, over time?

For those who want the omega3 and 6 balanced in their meat, there is a new company from the mainland. You can find their meat at Mother Nature’s in Cook Street Village and at Lifestyles. While it says “Grass fed,” I am assured it is also grass finished (not finished on grain for the last 6 weeks which changes the profile dramatically). “Chase Your Passion Rather Than Your Pension”

 

This wisdom from Tommy Transit, a “retired” Vancouver bus driver (transit operator, please).

 

The message that “Tommy Transit’s Bus Tales” is: Respectfully acknowledge others in a spirit of playfulness and honesty.

 

We are on the way from Montague Harbour on Galeano Island to the Hummingbird Pub for dinner.

 

Tommy drives the free bus there that takes about ten minutes. Except, he doesn’t just drive. He enthusiastically draws us in to his performance art. It is the Art of Acknowledgment.

 

First, everyone gets either a tambourine or maraca. Then, with Fats Domino on the stereo, we all sing along and bang out the beat, while Tommy works his drum set.

 

Wait, did you say drum set? Yes, Tommy has a drum set attached to his Hummingbird bus.

 

We just can’t help but feel good. It is a perfect bus ride. All smiles as we exit for our dinner.

 

Now where does all this come from?

 

Tommy realized he could use his work as a transit operator to spread some joy to peoples’ lives. Here’s his formula and how you and I can do it too.

 

“The 7 Steps to the Art of Acknowledgement:

 

  1. Be aware of other people – they ache to be seen
  2. Notice something nice or unique about them
  3. Tell them cleanly what it was that you noticed
  4. Use sweet words in all that you say
  5. Have no expectations about how your words are received
  6. Be Playful, but respectful
  7. Smile inwardly and silently acknowledge yourself for having made a positive difference in sending another ripple of kindness out into the world”

 

The book is a chronicle of Tommy’s adventures once he decided to have a good time and exude joy in his work.

 

He relates that he often had more energy at the end of his shift than before.

 

Might it works for us, you and I?

 

This thinking is right in line with one of the “protocols” in my book The Zen of Joy. There, I suggest asking those we have dealings with: “How’s your day going so far?” and striking up a conversation.

 

Tommy takes it further by being more observant, noticing something about them and sincerely and respectfully acknowledging them by making a positive comment.

 

Just yesterday, I noticed an elderly lady waiting, it turns out for a taxi. I said hello and noticed she had a brightly coloured blouse. She responded and complimented her on her colourful clothing.

 

Her face lit up with a smile and we had a brief and delightful conversation.

 

I think I added a little bright spot to her day and just as importantly, I felt delight at the exchange.

 

I was reminded of Tommy’s point about all this. We are meant to give and when we do, we feel good.

 

“What we leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” –Pericles as quoted in Tommy’s book.

 

On the way back to our boat from dinner, Tommy puts a coughing sound on the stereo and stops and starts the bus a few times in beat with the coughing. Big laughs from everyone.

 

Now, we are calling out requests for tunes and if he has it. Passengers are singing, beating out the rhythm and talking with each other.

 

What a great “retirement” for Tommy, carrying on the tradition he started in the city.

What they call “flu season” is coming up in the fall. But sometimes we fall prey to a summer cold. Here is a positive way to view oolds and flus.

 

Hering’s Law of Cure:

 

Symptoms of a chronic disease disappear in definite order, going in reverse and taking about one month for every year the symptoms have been present.

Symptoms move from the more vital organs to the less vital organs; from the interior of the body towards the skin.

Symptoms move from the top of the body downward.

Hering’s Law of Cure is the basis of all healing. This is the way the body heals or cures itself. “All cure starts from within out, from the head down and in reverse order as the symptoms have appeared or been suppressed”.

 

“We don’t catch diseases, we create them by breaking down the natural defenses according to the way we eat, drink, think and live”. Hering’s Law is a very important law to understand and remember. It is imperative to follow this law in order to allow the body to eliminate toxins created daily.

The definition of Hering’s Law of Cure is as follows:

 

“We heal from the head down”. This means that before we can even begin to heal we must believe we can heal. We must be mentally prepared and strong in order to allow the body to heal. We must not doubt the body’s ability to heal itself.

 

“We heal from within out”. This means we must allow the body to cleanse. In order for the body to eliminate toxins it must be allowed to do so by not suppressing any kind of discharge.

 

Most over-the-counter medications and prescriptions do suppress discharges. This is not good as these toxins can go deeper into the body and create other weaknesses. The body must be allowed to cleanse itself in whatever manner it needs to without interruption by synthetic suppressive substances.

 

“We heal in reverse order as the symptoms have appeared or been suppressed”. This means that most of the time the last problem someone has is the first problem to be dealt with by the body in the reversal process.

 

For instance, let’s say the last illness you had was a sinus infection and a suppressive medication was used to stop any sneezing, coughing, dripping nose or sinus drainage.

 

In order for the body to heal itself it must eliminate these toxins and mucous that were suppressed at this time. Since this was the last illness it is the easiest for the body to heal.

 

The body may stimulate the Immune System to create a fever to burn out the toxins, the toxins may be eliminated through the Lungs or Bronchioles causing a large amount of phlegm to exit these areas, it might eliminate them through the skin causing breakouts or it could eliminate them through the Colon in which case mucous, old feces and food that hasn’t been eaten for quite a while may be eliminated. These are just a few ways the body heals itself.

 

Unfortunately, Hering’s Law of Cure is not used today in Orthodox medicine. Orthodox medicine generally believes that because the symptoms are suppressed the problem is cured, or by removing the organ, which is not functioning correctly, it can cure the problem.

 

Perhaps this is why no one knows what a “Cold” is today. A “Cold” is the body’s way of eliminating toxins, which it does by increasing the mucous from the mucous membranes in order to free the toxins. Toxin elimination is imperative in order for the body to stay healthy. Disease reversal is also imperative in order for the body to “cure” a disease.

How to Talk to Bores, and What Truman Capote Teaches Us About Being Interesting

A bore has feelings. Very often he will interrupt something boring he is saying to comment that he is a bore. His wife comes over and inquires sweetly, “Is he boring you?”

 

If he is, maybe it’s your fault. “Being interested makes one interesting,” Dr. Erich Fromm observed, to which I would add that you generally get out of a conversation what you put into it.

 

Truman Capote has a natural gift that makes him a great guest at a dinner party: he is always interested in whomever he’s talking to. For one thing, he really looks at the person he is with. Most of us see outlines of one another, but Truman is noting skin texture, voice tone, details of clothing.

 

One of the reasons that Truman is always interested in people is that he won’t allow himself to be bored. He told me that when he meets a truly crashing bore he asks himself, “Why am I so bored? What is it about this person that is making me yawn?” He ponders, “What should this person do that he hasn’t done? What does he lack that might intrigue me?”

 

He catalogues thoughtfully the bore’s face, his hair style, his mannerisms, his speech patterns. He tries to imagine how the bore feels about himself, what kind of a wife he might have, what he likes and dislikes. To get the answers, he starts to ask some of these questions aloud. In short, Truman gets so absorbed in finding out why he is bored that he is no longer bored at all.

Joy in the Dentist’s Chair. Mastery Newsletter Update July 18, 2014

Joy in the dentist’s chair. What, are you crazy?

 

For most of us, getting your teeth drilled is not very high on the list of things that create happiness or joy. It’s just a necessary evil. Something to be suffered through to do the maintenance our teeth demand.

 

Yet, I sat in my dentist’s chair while he drilled and filled three teeth. I did it without freezing and I felt joy.

 

I hasten to add, I had to do some work to feel that joy and I did slip a little out of it from time to time. But, for the most part, that is the overarching emotion/sensation/feeling I had during the hour.

 

How is that possible, you may ask?

 

I did it by applying one of the protocols from my book The Zen of Joy. This is the one called “How to be Happy 24/7.”

 

This protocol or practice involves accessing what is called “the inner smile.” This has become easier and easier as time goes on. Practice makes perfect, they say.

 

How did it come to be that I asked for no freezing in the first place?

 

It was January of 1977. I am walking the streets of Merida, the capital of Yucatan State in Mexico. I spot a dental office at street level. A couple of year previous, I had chipped my two front teeth.

 

A dentist in Vancouver had quoted me $300 each to fix them. I didn’t bother. But I thought, let’s see what it would cost here. The dentist greeted me. There was no receptionist. He quoted me $10 for the both of them! Go ahead, says I. He says: “You have the money ON YOU?”

 

Those lasted for decades. The most interesting part was, he started to drill without freezing. Now, I had been seeing dentists for years and never had that experience. I stopped him and asked: “What about the freezing?” “ No es necessario” he replied.

 

And surprise, surprise, there was no pain. This was a revelation. So, the next time I had occasion to get drilled in Canada again, I asked for no freezing.

 

Again, no pain. Oh, there was lots of racket, but no actual pain. It was mostly the anticipation of pain. I used my meditation experience to throw the energy in to the area of my “third eye” in the forehead.

 

When I had a root canal without freezing, now THAT was a real challenge. And, in recent years, I have relented and become lazier and do allow the freezing from time to time.

 

Back to my dentist’s chair this week. Not only was there no pain, it was quite relaxing really. Yes, the drill made quite a racket that my ears picked up on.

 

But, using the inner smile technique from The Zen of Joy, I was able easily and effortlessly to release any attachment to the noise.

 

In fact, throughout the years, I have been able to use the experience to deepen my meditation practice.

 

I have more visits to look forward to, but for you, gentle reader, is there a lesson?

 

Perhaps it is this: if a fool such as I can find a way to feel joy in what can be a terror filled experience for many, perhaps there is a way to feel this joy in your life.

 

Perhaps The Zen of Joy protocols can be practiced to expand joy in your life. Perhaps you too can find a way to feel joy in challenging situations.

There is no such thing as flu “season.”

 

This concept never existed when I was a kid. It is an invention. It helps the drug companies to sell their drugs…i.e. vaccines.

 

Whether vaccines work, whether they have side effects is a separate topic, not on today’s agenda.

 

Today, we are going to focus on Vitamin D…that is free this time of year.

 

Sun exposure is the cheapest way to get it.

Magician, Warrior, Lover, Sovereign. Mastery Newsletter update July 11, 2014

We have within us all the qualities that make for a fulfilled and balanced life.

“Wild Voice” singing instructor Edwin Coppard fleshed these out for me this week.

Each of us has a warrior, a magician, a lover and a sovereign. And we have a male and female aspect of these.

 

The challenge is these qualities or energy aspects of ourselves can be wounded. These wounds can block us from fulfilling our potential as healers on the planet at a critical time when we are needed.

 

Yes, each of us, you and I, are called upon to help heal ourselves, our families, friends and all our relations during what appears to be a pivotal time in our history.

 

Bringing these aspects of our selves, these different qualities or energies into balance is healing not only for ourselves, but also others.

 

In fact, it can be argued that this is our highest calling: to release the energies in both male and female aspects to do their holy work within us.

 

Or to say it otherwise, for us to allow these aspects to come out from hiding, to express themselves fully…in a balanced “yin and yang” way. To truly balance the different male and female aspects we all have.

 

In a one hour consultation with Edwin, we identified how my Warrior male and female energy had been split and lived in separate parts of my body. Through visualization and intention, I was then able to bring the two of them together in a most appropriate part of my body.

 

We did the same for the Magician energy and the Lover and Sovereign within me.

 

What do these four energies represent?

 

The Warrior is aligned with action, with moving forward in the physical world.

 

The Lover is our sensory system. It is connection with others and with the Energy of Love that permeates the Universe.

 

The Magician encompasses the skills we have developed over a lifetime. The skills that we use to serve others and get paid for.

 

The Sovereign can be thought of as the King and Queen that resides inside us. It is pure vibration. It knows why I came here, what purpose I am to fulfill. The Sovereign, when balanced, can look forward and guide me in fulfilling my purpose.

 

From this session with Edwin was born four daily rituals that take only a few moments and continue to unfold the integration of the male and female aspects of these four aspects of myself.

 

How did I choose to consult with Edwin?

 

It is another example of the power of intention. I had been reflecting on the concept of the “Bucket List.” It has become popular now for Boomers to make up a list of things they want to do before “kicking the bucket” or checking out of these physical bodies.

 

I realized that my one and only item on my bucket list was an internal one. I wanted to release whatever traumas are lingering in my body, mind, emotions and spirit and thereby release any and all fears.

 

It seemed and seems to me that would be “mainlining” the full experience of life.
