Smile: It May Save Your Life

 

Can a smile be the difference between life and death?

 

There is evidence now that our bodies create different hormonal substances/chemicals depending on the shape of our mouths!

 

This is astounding news.

 

You mean to say that just turning up the corners of our mouths to simulate a smile and our bodies respond with a cascade of the “feel good” hormones such as endorphins?

 

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying.

 

Let’s consider the opposite: a frown. This may be deadly.

 

The Permanent Down-Mouth

 

The opposite to pulling up the corners of the mouth to show happiness is pulling both corners downward to show the Down-Mouth expression. This is done by the person who feels unhappy, despondent, depressed, angry or tense. Unfortunately, if a person holds these negative emotions throughout their lifetime, the corners of the mouth will set into a permanent down position.

 

In later life, this can give a person an appearance similar to a bulldog. Studies show that we stand further away from people who have this expression, give them less eye contact and avoid them when they are walking towards us. If you discover that the Down-Mouth has crept into your repertoire, practice smiling regularly, which will not only help you avoid looking like an angry canine in later life, but will make you feel more positive. Robin Williams committed suicide. After I read the above article, I watched some videos of his performances that showed up as tributes to him.

 

Whenever he would finish a hilarious “bit,” the corners of his mouth came back to their “go to” position, which was turned down! This is something that I did not notice until I read the article above.

 

I hasten to add, this is not a scientific study by any means. Still, I now wonder if the hormone/chemical production in his body was overwhelmingly of the depressive type BECAUSE of his habitual turning down of the corners of his mouth?

 

He created much laughter and joy for his audience. It appears he did not know how to create that same joy in his own body.

 

What is the habitual and “go to” position for the corners of YOUR mouth?

 

Are the corners of your mouth pointing down more? Or are they pointing up more?

 

If down, do you have the ability to make a choice to point them up more? Whenever you think about it, why not experiment?

 

What have you got to lose?

 

I wonder if this one habit may not go a long way to lifting sadness and perhaps even depression, over time?

Grass Fed and Grass Finished Meat

 

For those who want the omega3 and 6 balanced in their meat, there is a new company from the mainland. You can find their meat at Mother Nature’s in Cook Street Village and at Lifestyles. While it says “Grass fed,” I am assured it is also grass finished (not finished on grain for the last 6 weeks which changes the profile dramatically). Their name escapes me, but you will see it…something like New World.

What they call “flu season” is coming up in the fall. But sometimes we fall prey to a summer cold. Here is a positive way to view oolds and flus.

 

Hering’s Law of Cure:

 

Symptoms of a chronic disease disappear in definite order, going in reverse and taking about one month for every year the symptoms have been present.

Symptoms move from the more vital organs to the less vital organs; from the interior of the body towards the skin.

Symptoms move from the top of the body downward.

Hering’s Law of Cure is the basis of all healing. This is the way the body heals or cures itself. “All cure starts from within out, from the head down and in reverse order as the symptoms have appeared or been suppressed”.

 

“We don’t catch diseases, we create them by breaking down the natural defenses according to the way we eat, drink, think and live”. Hering’s Law is a very important law to understand and remember. It is imperative to follow this law in order to allow the body to eliminate toxins created daily.

The definition of Hering’s Law of Cure is as follows:

 

“We heal from the head down”. This means that before we can even begin to heal we must believe we can heal. We must be mentally prepared and strong in order to allow the body to heal. We must not doubt the body’s ability to heal itself.

 

“We heal from within out”. This means we must allow the body to cleanse. In order for the body to eliminate toxins it must be allowed to do so by not suppressing any kind of discharge.

 

Most over-the-counter medications and prescriptions do suppress discharges. This is not good as these toxins can go deeper into the body and create other weaknesses. The body must be allowed to cleanse itself in whatever manner it needs to without interruption by synthetic suppressive substances.

 

“We heal in reverse order as the symptoms have appeared or been suppressed”. This means that most of the time the last problem someone has is the first problem to be dealt with by the body in the reversal process.

 

For instance, let’s say the last illness you had was a sinus infection and a suppressive medication was used to stop any sneezing, coughing, dripping nose or sinus drainage.

 

In order for the body to heal itself it must eliminate these toxins and mucous that were suppressed at this time. Since this was the last illness it is the easiest for the body to heal.

 

The body may stimulate the Immune System to create a fever to burn out the toxins, the toxins may be eliminated through the Lungs or Bronchioles causing a large amount of phlegm to exit these areas, it might eliminate them through the skin causing breakouts or it could eliminate them through the Colon in which case mucous, old feces and food that hasn’t been eaten for quite a while may be eliminated. These are just a few ways the body heals itself.

 

Unfortunately, Hering’s Law of Cure is not used today in Orthodox medicine. Orthodox medicine generally believes that because the symptoms are suppressed the problem is cured, or by removing the organ, which is not functioning correctly, it can cure the problem.

 

Perhaps this is why no one knows what a “Cold” is today. A “Cold” is the body’s way of eliminating toxins, which it does by increasing the mucous from the mucous membranes in order to free the toxins. Toxin elimination is imperative in order for the body to stay healthy. Disease reversal is also imperative in order for the body to “cure” a disease.

How to Talk to Bores, and What Truman Capote Teaches Us About Being Interesting

A bore has feelings. Very often he will interrupt something boring he is saying to comment that he is a bore. His wife comes over and inquires sweetly, “Is he boring you?”

 

If he is, maybe it’s your fault. “Being interested makes one interesting,” Dr. Erich Fromm observed, to which I would add that you generally get out of a conversation what you put into it.

 

Truman Capote has a natural gift that makes him a great guest at a dinner party: he is always interested in whomever he’s talking to. For one thing, he really looks at the person he is with. Most of us see outlines of one another, but Truman is noting skin texture, voice tone, details of clothing.

 

One of the reasons that Truman is always interested in people is that he won’t allow himself to be bored. He told me that when he meets a truly crashing bore he asks himself, “Why am I so bored? What is it about this person that is making me yawn?” He ponders, “What should this person do that he hasn’t done? What does he lack that might intrigue me?”

 

He catalogues thoughtfully the bore’s face, his hair style, his mannerisms, his speech patterns. He tries to imagine how the bore feels about himself, what kind of a wife he might have, what he likes and dislikes. To get the answers, he starts to ask some of these questions aloud. In short, Truman gets so absorbed in finding out why he is bored that he is no longer bored at all.

Joy in the Dentist’s Chair. Mastery Newsletter Update July 18, 2014

Joy in the dentist’s chair. What, are you crazy?

 

For most of us, getting your teeth drilled is not very high on the list of things that create happiness or joy. It’s just a necessary evil. Something to be suffered through to do the maintenance our teeth demand.

 

Yet, I sat in my dentist’s chair while he drilled and filled three teeth. I did it without freezing and I felt joy.

 

I hasten to add, I had to do some work to feel that joy and I did slip a little out of it from time to time. But, for the most part, that is the overarching emotion/sensation/feeling I had during the hour.

 

How is that possible, you may ask?

 

I did it by applying one of the protocols from my book The Zen of Joy. This is the one called “How to be Happy 24/7.”

 

This protocol or practice involves accessing what is called “the inner smile.” This has become easier and easier as time goes on. Practice makes perfect, they say.

 

How did it come to be that I asked for no freezing in the first place?

 

It was January of 1977. I am walking the streets of Merida, the capital of Yucatan State in Mexico. I spot a dental office at street level. A couple of year previous, I had chipped my two front teeth.

 

A dentist in Vancouver had quoted me $300 each to fix them. I didn’t bother. But I thought, let’s see what it would cost here. The dentist greeted me. There was no receptionist. He quoted me $10 for the both of them! Go ahead, says I. He says: “You have the money ON YOU?”

 

Those lasted for decades. The most interesting part was, he started to drill without freezing. Now, I had been seeing dentists for years and never had that experience. I stopped him and asked: “What about the freezing?” “ No es necessario” he replied.

 

And surprise, surprise, there was no pain. This was a revelation. So, the next time I had occasion to get drilled in Canada again, I asked for no freezing.

 

Again, no pain. Oh, there was lots of racket, but no actual pain. It was mostly the anticipation of pain. I used my meditation experience to throw the energy in to the area of my “third eye” in the forehead.

 

When I had a root canal without freezing, now THAT was a real challenge. And, in recent years, I have relented and become lazier and do allow the freezing from time to time.

 

Back to my dentist’s chair this week. Not only was there no pain, it was quite relaxing really. Yes, the drill made quite a racket that my ears picked up on.

 

But, using the inner smile technique from The Zen of Joy, I was able easily and effortlessly to release any attachment to the noise.

 

In fact, throughout the years, I have been able to use the experience to deepen my meditation practice.

 

I have more visits to look forward to, but for you, gentle reader, is there a lesson?

 

Perhaps it is this: if a fool such as I can find a way to feel joy in what can be a terror filled experience for many, perhaps there is a way to feel this joy in your life.

 

Perhaps The Zen of Joy protocols can be practiced to expand joy in your life. Perhaps you too can find a way to feel joy in challenging situations.

There is no such thing as flu “season.”

 

This concept never existed when I was a kid. It is an invention. It helps the drug companies to sell their drugs…i.e. vaccines.

 

Whether vaccines work, whether they have side effects is a separate topic, not on today’s agenda.

 

Today, we are going to focus on Vitamin D…that is free this time of year.

 

Sun exposure is the cheapest way to get it.

Magician, Warrior, Lover, Sovereign. Mastery Newsletter update July 11, 2014

We have within us all the qualities that make for a fulfilled and balanced life.

“Wild Voice” singing instructor Edwin Coppard fleshed these out for me this week.

Each of us has a warrior, a magician, a lover and a sovereign. And we have a male and female aspect of these.

 

The challenge is these qualities or energy aspects of ourselves can be wounded. These wounds can block us from fulfilling our potential as healers on the planet at a critical time when we are needed.

 

Yes, each of us, you and I, are called upon to help heal ourselves, our families, friends and all our relations during what appears to be a pivotal time in our history.

 

Bringing these aspects of our selves, these different qualities or energies into balance is healing not only for ourselves, but also others.

 

In fact, it can be argued that this is our highest calling: to release the energies in both male and female aspects to do their holy work within us.

 

Or to say it otherwise, for us to allow these aspects to come out from hiding, to express themselves fully…in a balanced “yin and yang” way. To truly balance the different male and female aspects we all have.

 

In a one hour consultation with Edwin, we identified how my Warrior male and female energy had been split and lived in separate parts of my body. Through visualization and intention, I was then able to bring the two of them together in a most appropriate part of my body.

 

We did the same for the Magician energy and the Lover and Sovereign within me.

 

What do these four energies represent?

 

The Warrior is aligned with action, with moving forward in the physical world.

 

The Lover is our sensory system. It is connection with others and with the Energy of Love that permeates the Universe.

 

The Magician encompasses the skills we have developed over a lifetime. The skills that we use to serve others and get paid for.

 

The Sovereign can be thought of as the King and Queen that resides inside us. It is pure vibration. It knows why I came here, what purpose I am to fulfill. The Sovereign, when balanced, can look forward and guide me in fulfilling my purpose.

 

From this session with Edwin was born four daily rituals that take only a few moments and continue to unfold the integration of the male and female aspects of these four aspects of myself.

 

How did I choose to consult with Edwin?

 

It is another example of the power of intention. I had been reflecting on the concept of the “Bucket List.” It has become popular now for Boomers to make up a list of things they want to do before “kicking the bucket” or checking out of these physical bodies.

 

I realized that my one and only item on my bucket list was an internal one. I wanted to release whatever traumas are lingering in my body, mind, emotions and spirit and thereby release any and all fears.

 

It seemed and seems to me that would be “mainlining” the full experience of life.

The Game of Enlightenment

 

Question: If a Western man were to become totally enlightened, what would happen to other people and to his feelings, especially lovers?

 

Ram Dass: Let me start with the word “love” for a moment. I think there is a transformation that goes on in one’s conception of the term “love.” And I think one changes from seeing it as a verb, to seeing it as a state of being. And you move much more towards what would be called Christ-love, that is, the state of being where one “is” love. One is like a light that emits, and one is a loving being. Consciousness and energy are an identity, and similarly with those identities is the term love. That is, that love and consciousness are one and the same thing. So that as you get into a higher state of consciousness you come closer to being in love. That doesn’t mean in interpersonal love. It means being – love. Now if you and I love or fall into love and I say, “She really turns me on. I love her,” from this model what i see is happening is that I’m saying, “You are a…….,” in the imprinting literature, “You are a superordinate key stimulus that is eliciting an innate response mechanism.” Or I could say it in a more general sense, saying that “You’re turning me on.” And you’re turning me on to a place inside myself that is love. So I am experiencing what it means to “be in love.” And I’m saying I am in love with you. I am in love with my connection to the place in me that is love, is the way I would now say it in this Western framework.

 

And it’s interesting that as long as you are under the illusion that what you are loving is “out there,” you will always experience a separateness. It is only when you begin to understand that if you and I are truly in love, if I go to the place in me that is love and you to the place in you that is love, we are “together” in Love. We start to understand that what love means is that we are sharing a common state together. That state exists in you and it exists in me.

 

Now the enlightened being… what happens to him is that he changes the nature of his love object from a specific love object to it all, finally. You would say that an enlightened being is totally in love with the universe, in the sense that everything in the universe turns him on to that place in himself where he is love and consciousness. So I would say that an interpersonal relationship that has any qualities of possessiveness in it, or ego drama of any kind, certainly undergoes changes as the nature of consciousness changes; and at the same moment I would say that as a person becomes more conscious he understands that he has certain karmic commitments, that is, existing contracts which may be with parents, husband or wife, children – and that he can not rid himself of these without creating a karmic cost – without leaving behind him some uncooked seeds that he’s running away from.

 

The game of enlightenment starts from exactly where you are at this moment, and therefore, if you have an existing social-emotional-sexual contract with another human being, that’s where it starts. To say, “Well, I’ve got to go do my work on myself, I can’t afford you anymore” leaves a ripping which ultimately you’ve got to rectify. There’s no doubt about it. You’ve got to work from where you are now. You just can’t walk out, walk away from anything, any part of your life. You’ve got to bring it all into harmony at every new level.

You look in the mirror and see the clear transformation.

 

You are smiling the broadest smile ever.

 

Your eyes are sparkling.

 

There are fewer wrinkles…at least it feels that way. You take a deep breath. As you exhale, you sense a warmth in the pit of your stomach.

 

You close your eyes and that warm and fuzzy feeling floods your whole body. You open your eyes and you are almost giddy with the vibrant energy coursing through your veins.

 

For a moment, you think you have died and gone to heaven.

 

But this is real.

 

You can’t wait to get to work and dig into those challenges. Challenges that you used to call “problems.”

 

“Problems” so big you wondered: “How will I make it through the day?” “Problems” that had you thinking about quitting.

 

Now, all that is in the past.

 

Now, co-workers who used to tick you off are smiling at you. Oh, they still say the same stupid things. They still do the same thoughtless things that irritated you in the past.

 

Only now, you have found a way to mentally shrug them off…to let it go.

 

Chuckle, smile and move on. In fact, some of them have actually started to help you out. Is it because you smile more? What happened to make this change?

 

My name is Matti Anttila and this is my life now.

 

This Life Can Be Yours Too!

 

How did I get here and, more importantly, how can you?

 

I am from a working class family. No special advantages. I am not anymore “special” than you. The fact is we are all special and unique. Each one of us is God’s creation and divinely inspired.

 

My route to “Authentic Joy” began with Laughter Yoga.

After one session, I knew I had to become a “Leader” to dive into it and see where it took me.

 

Authentic Joy is something that is underneath the stormy seas of emotion on the surface. We can feel Authentic Joy…even when we are unhappy!!

 

There are, of course, many ways to plug into this. Some do it through meditation. Some run for miles to get the “runner’s high.”

 

Laughter is a direct route, a shortcut.

 

Certified Laughter Yoga Leader training was the “key” that opened the lock.

 

Laughter, giggling and smiling are second nature now.

 

Instead of reacting to events by tightening my stomach muscles, I am now more likely to giggle, smile and sometimes laugh at those same events.

 

There is a song title: “When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.”

 

Well…IT’S TRUE!!!! It happens every day to me.

 

Imagine having such a strong smile that many people on the street smile back at you.

 

You can have that too.

 

That is, if you choose. Not everyone is ready to let go of entrenched habits. Habits that may cause something less than joy.

How about this? Prisoners have to have one of the worst situations. Locked away, told what to do and when to do it every day.

 

Look what Laughter Yoga is doing for some prisoners…in a Mexican jail:

 

 

Laughter Yoga Project in Prisons in Mexico aims to Unleash Happiness

 

Luis Gomez has a heart for doing Laughter Yoga in the penitentiary system in Mexico City. He has a very large goal of reaching out to every prisoner and to help empower them to tap into their inner happiness. The aim is in alignment with Laughter Yoga International to create World Peace starting with peace within ourselves.

 Ideally, by practicing laughter yoga, prisoners will be reminded to make better choices for themselves…

In the Instituto Mexicano de Yoga de la Risa (Mexican Laughter Yoga Institute) we are convinced of the healing powers of this technique that gives the opportunity of empowering other human beings to remember that happiness exists within every single one of us, no matter the conditions in which we are, and from then on, we can establish harmonious relationships with the rest of the people…

In general the inmates are very grateful for all what they’ve got from the meetings. They said that they feel a refresher every time they do it. They feel free. They think that the exercise exercises help them to realize that they can cultivate their internal peace. If Laughter Yoga can work for prisoners in a Mexican jail to access their inner happiness, it just may work for you.

 

Caveat: No one can force you to laugh.

 

You do have to bring your willingness to the table.

 

But, I guarantee you this:

 

If you bring willingness and are willing to work and play through the initial discomfort/unease/embarrassment/what-have-you, you too can have a breakthrough and become:

Dr. Otto Warburg, the President of the Institute of Cell Physiology and two times a Nobel Prize winner, says this:

 

“Deep breathing techniques increase oxygen to the cells and are the most important factors in living a disease-free and energetic life. When the cells get enough oxygen, cancer will not and cannot occur.”

 

In fact, Laughter Yoga was inspired by a response to disease by an enlightened patient. Founder Dr. Madan Kataria read about Norman Cousins who laughed himself back to health. Cousins was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a painful form of arthritis.

 

Many die from this disease. The pain can be so great that sleep can become impossible. Cousins decided to go out laughing! So, he brought in Marx Brothers movies into his hospital room and started laughing.

“Told that he had little chance of surviving, Cousins developed a recovery program incorporating megadoses of Vitamin C, along with a positive attitude, love, faith, hope, and laughter induced by Marx Brothers films.

 

“I made the joyous discovery that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me at least two hours of pain-free sleep,” he reported. “When the pain-killing effect of the laughter wore off, we would switch on the motion picture projector again and not infrequently, it would lead to another pain-free interval.”

Sunday (tomorrow) is the day Laughter Yoga Clubs around the world celebrate the joy of laughing with World Laughter Day events in over 70 countries.

 

Everyone is welcome to come and laugh with us here at Beacon Hill Park 11am Sunday at the sun dial…

 

Soren, one of our esteemed leaders, will have the Laughter Pedicab so we can ride around the park laughing collecting smiles from folks and maybe a chuckle or two.

Embrace Your Illness: It is a Message from Your Subconscious

Life, God, the Universe, Life Force Energy, call it what you will, only wants the best for you and I.

The pain, the suffering of having an illness, be it a cold, a flu, pneumonia or anything else, is not a punishment. It is a message.

“Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.”

When we are in the middle of a bout of flu, that hardly seems to be true. And yet, yet…

Let us suppose that perhaps the Universe IS a friendly place and only wants to steer us in the direction of our highest good.

In that case, if we get off track, perhaps the Universe sends us a message, a kick in the butt: “Hey kid. You’re off the path here. Get back on track.”

It could be a stubbed toe. If we ignore the message, then guess what? Our “guardian angel” (another way to think of the Universe) sends a stronger message. Perhaps the next one is a fender bender car “accident.” Perhaps it is a cold or flu.

Consider any event in our lives that we think of as negative is actually a message and happens for our highest good.

Consider that perhaps everything happens for our highest good. If we continue to ignore the messages, the Universe, our Guardian Angel sends increasingly stronger messages until we “get it.”

So, rather than falling into the victim mentality: “Oh woe is me. Why does everything bad happen to me,” why not take the “time out” we are given with an illness and reflect on the message the friendly universe is sending to us?

A number of folks I know personally who rarely get ill have had an extended bout this year, myself included!

If  it is true, as I contend, that living in joy is our best “recipe” for success, then one answer to pain, illness and/or suffering may well be….wait for it…laughter and smiling.

When we allow joy into every moment, we have better cellular communication, i.e. the neurons are “firing on all cylinders” and we can more readily find solutions to whatever “ails” us.

Yes, I know it can be a challenge to find a way to laugh or smile when in pain and wondering if it something more serious. It can easy to give in to worry.

Introducing for the first time in Victoria: The Wizzdom Game.

Created by a self described “ordinary bloke” in Australia, this interactive and joyous game has people over the world raving about the insights they enjoy.

My friend and fellow Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher Gene Furbee experienced the gamge recently and here is what he has to say:

“While attending the International Laughter Yoga Conference recently in White Rock I played the Wizzdom Game with facilitators Sebastien Gendry and Lynda Tourloukis. Playing the game over a three hour period gave me a taste of what the full game played over a two day period could contribute toward a sense of ones self and others.

 

My experience was that so much of what I take for granted in life such as the simple awareness of the world around me began to take on a natural curiosity and interest that reminded me of earlier times in life when everyday seemed to just unfold.

 

I caught a glimpse of what it was like to simply trust myself to respond to situations as they occurred and in that, experience a sense of freedom in being alive and involved with others. The beauty of playing the variety of games within the Wizzdom Game is that as adults we have available to us the freedom of play combined with keen insights into ourselves and others.”

In fact, Gene loved the game so much, he arranged for Wizzdom Game Facilitator Linda Tourloukis to come to Victoria for a one time event…THIS SUNDAY!

Governments may not be able to help us very much. Not because they don’t want to, but it may be just too much for them.

1)      Take regular saunas. Saunas have the power to detoxify us from radioactive isotopes and also heavy metals and other toxins.

2)      Geophagy, which is a fancy word for eating clay.

 

Specific clays recommended are bentonite, French Green Clay and Zeolite. All have similar qualities that cause them to bind with radioactive isotopes in the body. I take the first two and find them cost-effective.

 

Overview: Mix one tablespoon of the chosen clay in a glass of water. Drink it. Good on an empty stomach. Both available in health food stores.

Pectin, Chaparral, Chlorella AND Stay Away from Sugar and Sodas

 

Jon Barron http://www.jonbarron.org/ recommends apple pectin. He says the herb chaparral protects against damage that radiation can do to the DNA. He also recommends chlorella. I suggest staying away from cilantro for reasons outlined in a previous blog…i.e. it is said to open up the blood brain barrier, which is not a good idea if there are heavy metals in the body. As far as iodine is concerned, it only protects against radioactive iodine entering the thyroid and then only for 48 hours.

 

Stay away from sugar and especially sodas. The sodas contain phosphoric acid which is the worst thing you could consume.

Sulfur: Sulfur prevents sulfur-35 from up-taking in the body. While not commonly available in supplement form we can use MSM (methylsulfonyl methane; 2 to 3 grams daily) which is a natural sulfur compound available in powder or pill form (it does taste quite bitter if you use the powder form). MSM is a good anti-inflammatory with additional benefits for tendons, ligaments, hair, skin and preventing allergies. Another supplemental form of sulfur is N-Acetyl-Cysteine (500mg to 1,000mg) also good for removing mucous from the body. NAC is one of the best boosters of glutathione, the internally produced antioxidant that is perhaps the most effective one for protecting against radiation. Do not take more than 1,500mg daily due to its ability to also be a pro-radical in excess.

 

Clay and Baking Soda

 

Bentonite clay and other food grade clays, especially French green clay, can attract and pull radiation from the body, when used both internally and externally. This works well because clay has a negative charge and radioactive material has a positive ionic charge. One usually takes a teaspoon of clay, mix it into water, let it settle out and drink the cloudy water while leaving the sediment behind. One can work up to a teaspoon three times per day for more intense purposes. Ingesting clay should be done on an empty stomach (half hour before or an hour after eating). Clays have also proved helpful for removing heavy metals, purifying the intestinal tract and alkalizing the body.

 

Externally clay can be added to a bath (1 cup) for decontamination purposes. Another decontamination bath is comprised of sea salt (1 lb or 1 cup) and baking soda (1 lb or 1 cup) in a warm bath, soak for at least 20 minutes and rinse off with cool water. When used alone for bathing the amount of baking soda used varies from 1 to 3 pounds per bath, depending on severity of exposure.

 

Baking soda can also be used internally and is recommended by the army for those exposed to radiation. Baking soda taken orally can reduce the damage that uranium causes to the kidneys. About 1/8th to ½ a teaspoon of baking soda in water three times daily.”

Reduce Radiation in Your Produce

 

Calcium Bentonite Clay has a uniquely strong negative ionic charge. The Three Most Dangerous Words in Any Language. March 11, 2013

Thanks to T. Harv Eker for turning me on to this in one of his workshops.

The process that happens when we use these three words is dangerous to our mental and physical health.

 

It is anathema to our spiritual growth.

 

It puts the brakes on learning.

 

It creates calcification of attitude.

 

It makes us rigid, instead of flexible.

 

It sets us up for failure.

 

What are these three culprit words?

 

“I know that.”

 

They are simple words. If we find ourselves thinking those words when we are listening to new ideas, we can shut out learning about new information that may benefit us.

If we, even subconsciously and maybe automatically, default to the process of “pigeon-holing” ideas, concepts, theories, presentations and even people, we create a wall between us and new and potentially useful information.

It may be the ego’s way of defending itself. The ego has to feel superior. If it admits that it doesn’t know something, it feels inferior. So, at the earliest opportunity, it takes the stance that it already knows what is being presented to it.

All new information is quickly catalogued into an already familiar pigeon-hole. As soon as that is done, the ego no longer has to feel inferior. That’s why the ego does it at the earliest opportunity.

As soon as the pigeonholing is done, the ego now is ready to talk and no longer listening and taking in any more information. Any information being presented after that point is not being processed. Often times, the ego will interrupt the speaker with its point of view.

Does any of this sound familiar? It may be very much easier to see others do this than to notice ourselves doing it. Trust me, we all do it. 🙂

If you are keen on learning and growing and delighting in the adventure of exploring new vistas in life, there is an antidote.

 

The Antidote

 

That antidote is listening with keen interest. If we accept that every one we meet has something to teach us, that makes it easier.

Conversely, if we think that we know best and others need to listen to us, we are victims of the “I Know That Virus.”

To bathe in the delight of learning, the adventure of exploring new and exciting vistas, listening deeply is a major key.

How do we do that? The next time someone says something to you, try this. Instead of waiting for your turn to speak, listen closely to what is being said with the intent of “sucking the marrow” out of whatever knowledge and wisdom may be contained in their talk. Take mental notes as if you were to be tested on the material later.

Then, when the speaker pauses, instead of offering our viewpoint we can choose to ask a question. There will usually be something that the speaker either left out of their story or something that triggered our curiosity to know more.

Then, ask another question. And another. And another.

You may find as I have that these questions do a number of things. First, you may find you learn something new and possibly useful that you did not know before. (You may find yourself surprised at this.)

Also, you may find yourself making a deeper and friendlier, more intimate connection with the speaker. You did after all show keen interest in them. The most interesting subject to any human is themselves. When you show an interest in them, you are sharing a common interest.

If you spend an hour with someone just asking questions and listening, they may comment what a great conversationalist you are. 🙂

Benefits: You can learn something new. It may be useful in your life. You may make a new friend or deepen the connection with an existing one. And you may gain a reputation as a great conversationalist.

This is a learned skill, this asking of questions. If you are speaking with a trained salesperson, you may quickly find them starting to ask you questions. It may be easy to fall into just speaking about yourself. Before you know it, you may be talking at length about your favourite subject, yourself. 🙂

At that point, you have a choice to notice that and start asking questions about with the sincere intent to learn. If you do, you may well find yourself learning new and surprising things. This is a wonderful life enrichment skill that you can use anywhere at any time.

How Manipulated is Your Mind? Questionnaire discovers how much you have been influenced by advertising, PR and propaganda.

Most of us believe we think for ourselves. We come to logical conclusions based on our rational thinking on subjects.

How true is this? How much of our thinking and our behaviour being influenced and shaped by manipulators? Manipulators can include advertisers, politicians, corporations and governments and even non profit societies. These manipulations can be aimed at good purposes such as charities or for not so good such as getting us to buy things we don’t need.

Answer these questions to discover how much your thinking and behaviour may be influenced or shaped by the manipulators.

1)    Who first invented the light bulb?
2)    Have you ever eaten bacon and eggs for breakfast?
3)    Have you ever used the term “Banana Republic?”
4)    Have you ever smoked cigarettes?
5)    Have you ever been to a ballet?
6)    Have you ever used Ivory soap?
7)    Have you ever drunk fluoridated water or used fluoridated toothpaste or had fluoride treatment for your teeth?
8)    Have you ever used disposable cups?
9)    Have you ever stopped smoking?
10)    Have you ever bought an item of clothing without actually needing it? Example: have you bought a shirt when you already have one or more?

How to score yourself:

Give yourself one point if you answered Thomas Edison to the first question. The first inventor or the light bulb was actually Sir Joseph Swan, a British physicist and chemist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Swan
The reason we have been manipulated to think it was Edison is because of a public relatiosns or “PR” stunt staged by master manipulator Edward Bernays. In October of 1929, Bernays created an event called “Light’s Golden Jubilee” to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb.

Give yourself one point for each “yes” answer to questions 2-9.

Edward Bernays, a nephew of Sigmund Freud and the inventor of the term “public relations,” had a hand in each of the above behaviours.

Point 2) Bernays used his uncle Sigmund’s ideas to promote the concept that bacon and eggs was the ideal breakfast. Largely due to his efforts, that idea was widely adopted.

3) Bernays was hired by the United Fruit Company and the U.S. government to create a propaganda campaign to help overthrow the democratically elected government of Guatemala. The term “banana republic” was used to explain United Fruit Company’s domination of corrupt governments in Guatemala and other Latin American countries.

4) I have no info on men and the early causes of smoking, so men, you get a pass on this one. For women though, score one point if you answered yes.

One of Bernays’ most famous campaigns was getting women to smoke. Prior to the 1929 Easter Parade in New York, which Bernays staged, women could be arrested for smoking in public or outside of designated areas. Working on behalf of the American Tobacco Company, Bernays hired young models to light up simultaneously on his signal. He had alerted newspaper photographers who were on hand to capture images of the young models lighting up “Torches of Freedom” during the event.

 

The New York Times of April first 1929 printed: “Group of Girls Puff at Cigarettes as a Gesture of ‘Freedom.’” This helped to break the taboo against women smoking in public. After the historical public event, women started lighting up more than ever before. It was through Bernays that women’s smoking habits started to become socially acceptable.

 

5) In 1915 during Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes American tour, Bernays convinced magazines to write articles that told people that ballet is fun to watch.

 
6) Bernays worked with Procter & Gamble for Ivory soap. The campaign successfully convinced people that Ivory soap was medically superior to other soaps, largely because the soap floated better than its competitors.

7) Bernays helped the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) and other special interest groups to convince the American public that water fluoridation was safe and beneficial to human health. This was achieved by using the American Dental Association in a highly successful media campaign.

 
8) In the 1930s, Bernays’ Dixie Cup campaign was designed to convince consumers that only disposable cups were sanitary.

 

9) Bernays had a hand in getting people to stop smoking as well. After his semi-retirement in the 1960s he worked with anti-smoker lawyer John Banzhaf’s group, ASH and supported other anti-smoking campaigns.

 

10) In a 2002 award winning BBC documentary, “The Century of the Self,” Bernays is credited with largely starting the “consumer society.” The documentary claims that prior to Bernays, most people wore out their pants before buying a new pair. So, if you buy clothing to replace an item of clothing before it is worn out, you are to some extent, the victim of a propaganda system that created the fashion industry.

This manipulation of the “public mind” as Bernays termed it, is going on today and many levels and goes beyond just costing us money in buying what we don’t need or items that are more expensive than they need be. (Just look at the premium we pay for brand names.)

In his 1928 book “Propaganda,” Bernays argued that the manipulation of public opinion was a necessary part of democracy:

“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. …We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. (My bolding) This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. …In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons…who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.”

The problem with Bernays’ opinion is that his methods can be used to create totalitarian societies as well. Bernays himself was shocked to find out that the Nazis used his methods to consolidate their power.

 

In his 1965 autobiography, Bernays recalls a dinner at his home in 1933 where:

“Karl von Wiegand, foreign correspondent of the Hearst newspapers, an old hand at interpreting Europe and just returned from Germany, was telling us about Goebbels and his propaganda plans to consolidate Nazi power. Goebbels had shown Wiegand his propaganda library, the best Wiegand had ever seen. Goebbels, said Wiegand, was using my book Crystallizing Public Opinion as a basis for his destructive campaign against the Jews of Germany. This shocked me. … Obviously the attack on the Jews of Germany was no emotional outburst of the Nazis, but a deliberate, planned campaign.”

Though shocked, this did not stop Bernays. The genie he let out of the bag still roams the media landscape today. And as we noticed from our little questionnaire affects our thinking and behaviour on a daily basis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Bernays

I don’t have any pat answers or solutions to this. My approach has been the following.

How can I tell if I am brainwashed? I can’t by definition! If I am brainwashed, I can’t tell. Therefore, the only safe assumption is that I am brainwashed.

Proceeding from that assumption, how can I un-brainwash myself? The answer? I don’t know for sure. I am suspecting it has a lot to do with getting into the “now” that Eckhart Tolle talks about in his books The Power of Now and A New Earth.

Meditation may hold much of the answer to the problems of today. Would love your feedback. I believe Ram Dass is right when he says: “We are all just walking each other home.”
