Do You Have Deadly Stress? “Voo” to the Rescue

                                            

Healing Sexual Trauma at the Same Time

 

 

Chronically tight muscles may, over time, actually cause dis-ease.

 

We are designed to sense danger or threat two ways.

 

First, our external sense organs evaluate potential threats in our environment. If we see a bear close by, we know we are in danger.

 

Trauma expert Peter A. Levine tells us the other way we assess threat:

 

We also assess threat directly from the state of our viscera and our muscles — our internal sense organs. If our muscles are tense, we unconsciously interpret these tensions are foretelling the existence of danger, even when none actually exists. Tight muscles in the neck and shoulders may, for example, signal to the brain that you are likely to be hit…We suffer even greater distress when our guts are persistently overstimulated by the vagus nerve. If we are nauseated, twisted in our guts, feel our muscles collapsing, and lack in energy, we feel helpless and hopeless — even though there is no actual decimating threat. In other words, the churning itself signals grave threat and dread to the brain, even when nothing is currently wrong — at least not externally.”

 

 

These intense and heightened muscle tensions are meant to be temporary. If they become permanent, Levine says, “…one is left in acute and, eventually, chronic distress.”

 

 

Levine gives one solution. Sounding “Voo” like a foghorn. Imagine being a foghorn leading your spirit out of the fog back home.

Can Laughter Yoga Help to Lift Stress, Anxiety, Worry, Fears, Depression & PTSD?

It has happened.

 

One success story is Jane (not her real name) who healed a long standing case of PTSD from childhood sexual abuse.

“…Michael Cortina, director of outpatient services at the Regional Mental Health Center in Merrillville, Indiana, shows that PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) can be healed with laughter. He used it successfully to help Jane who is in her 30s…”It is absolutely revolutionary, and eliminates the negative effect and emotional distress of that trauma in one session”, said Cortina. – from Laughter Yoga International website article

“…Jane…constantly suffered from nightmares. Every night before she went to sleep, she checked all the closets, locked every door and made sure a hammer and can of mace were near her bed, giving her the peace of mind to doze off. But sleep only led to more nightmares. ‘I was basically living in my own personal hell,’ she said. As a child no therapy helped her till later in life when she went to Cortina and tried his therapy.”

Positive Results Locally from a Single Session of Laughter Yoga

A small group of military personnel participating in a 6 week Therapeutic Yoga program found a sense of happiness from one Laughter Yoga session.

 

After only one Laughter Yoga session, a male participant shared how he felt happy for the first time. He told us he keeps his unhappiness hidden from even his family and this was the first time he felt really happy. And he was confused.

 

A female participant chimed in and said she understood exactly what he meant and that she too felt happy for the first time and she also was confused.

 

Can this be sustained?

 

We are going to find out.

Is This the Root of All Your Challenges?

 

Could our worries, anxieties, fears and even depressions have this at its root?

 

Could our physical symptoms/conditions/dis-eases have this as a contributing factor at the least?

 

What is “this?”

 

Trauma.

 

Traumas, big and/or small may layer on top of each other until they create one or more of the conditions above.

 

This is from those therapists and authors who have worked with traumas for year. People like David Berceli who created the Revolutionary Trauma Release Process™

 

Waking the Tiger, Healing Trauma author Peter Levine concurs.

 

We All Have Trauma

 

From that book’s introduction:

 

“The fact is that, over time, a series of seemingly minor mishaps can have a damaging effect on a person. Trauma does not have to stem from a major catastrophe. Some common triggering events include:

 

* Automobile accident (even fender benders)

* Routine invasive medical procedures

* Loss of loved ones

* Natural disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes

 

Even falling off a bicycle can be overwhelming to a child under certain circumstances…almost all of us have experienced some form of trauma, either directly or indirectly.”

 

Anger After Laughter

 

An example of how this might work: during my first spring attending Laughter Yoga sessions weekly on a Saturday morning, I always felt joy and fantastic, energetic hopefulness. (this is typical of a Laughter Yoga session, by the way).

 

Then, all day Sunday, I was angry all day.

 

This went on for a number of weeks until it resolved itself.

 

When I went for my Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher training in the summer of 2009, I asked the founder Dr. Madan Kataria about this (He is the medical doctor who started the wildly successful Laughter Yoga clubs in 1995).

 

Fully Expressing Grief Releases Trauma

 

He told me that in India, when there is a death in the family, the family expresses their grief, they cry, they wail. They let it all out instead of trapping it in the body as we westerners do.

 

Westerners tend to hold it in and where we hold it in is in the diaphragm!

 

During Laughter Yoga, we move the diaphragm rather energetically. This can cause those trapped emotions to surface.

 

Laughter Yoga Can Clear Trauma…Over Time

 

The good news is that Laughter Yoga not only brings those emotions to the surface, it also helps to clear them. As I started to attend sessions a few times a week, the anger no longer came up. It had cleared.

 

Trauma Layers

 

My understanding is that we all have many traumas large and small, physical and emotional. They can be layered on top of each other. When the anger cleared, the next layer of trauma shows up. Fun times. 🙂

 

Peeling the Trauma Onion

 

It is as if these traumas layered on top of each other are like an onion.

 

Now, the question becomes, how to cut through many layers at once?

 

Daily Laughter

 

I now practice laughing at least once a day for a minimum of 10-15 minutes. (Dr. Kataria’s research indicates we need at least that long a period of laughter to get the health and medical benefits of laughter.) That daily practice has helped to continue the peeling of the “trauma onion.”

 

Trembling Solution to Trauma

 

Another practice I have started is David Berceli’s Revolutionary Trauma Release Process™

 

This is artificially create the trembling that children and animals in nature automatically do to release the stress hormones after a traumatic event.

 

In nature, an example would be a gazelle who just ran and got away from a lion. Berceli’s discovery: about two minutes is enough and then the gazelle carries on with life as it nothing had happened. Animals truly live in the “now.”

 

Cause or Contributing Factor?

 

Does it matter? If trauma is present in all of these conditions: PTSD, depression, anxiety, worry, fear, why not clear the trauma and see what happens?

 

Dis-eases: Can They Clear with Cleared Trauma?

 

No claims. Let us be clear on that. But, let’s look at how trauma may contribute.

 

If trauma causes muscles in our body to contract and stay contracted permanently, might this cause less blood flow to those muscles and to some organs, and maybe less nerve connection and less energy or “chi” flow as well?

 

Nutrition and Energy Missing

 

Can nerve disconnection, less blood flow and energy flow combine to help create conditions where some parts are just not getting the nutrition and energy required for health?

 

I don’t think we have to have extended medical training to use our common sense and say: “Hey, maybe that is possible.”

 

Is Your “River” Dammed Up?

 

An analogy may be a river that is dammed up. That may create stagnant pools of water where toxins can build up.

 

Might our bodies have stagnant pools where toxins build up because of trauma?

 

Proof of the Pudding.

 

It’s always in the eating, is it not?

 

Some Experiments to Consider

 

Laughter Yoga sessions. While contra-indicated for some, many folks just feel joy, happiness, more energy and relaxation at the same time. Maybe it also will start the trauma clearing process.

 

Other Trauma Release Processes

 

David Berceli’s book is in the library. See if that makes sense for you.

 

There are other methods as well. I am researching and will report back as I learn more.

A Doctor in Indiana had success. A woman who had been sexually abused, who locked all the doors, had a hammer and mace under her bed and had nightmares every night…

 

All that…gone…after just one Laughter Yoga session.

 

Now, I am convinced the doctor did other things as well, nevertheless…

 

As a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher, I was asked to lead a Laughter Yoga session with some folks from the Esquimalt Naval Base.

 

One guy said afterwards that it was the first time he had felt happy in a long time. Another participants said the same.

Service: The Key to Fulfillment, Contentment and Peace.

Was it Einstein who said those who are truly happy are those who have found a way to serve.

 

As a Laughter Yoga Teacher, I have been leading Laughter Yoga sessions for over six years now. Every time, I get a wonderful sense of peace, delight and contentment.

 

I believe it is not just my laughing, but helping others to access their inner childlike playfulness and delight. To see the joy in their faces.

 

Now, I am learning the art of doing less and letting myself be led.

 

What I am being led to is to use Laughter Yoga to help relieve Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.

The scene is the Inner Warriors Yoga studio in Esquimalt, a suburb of Victoria, BC, Canada.

 

It is Spring of 2014.

 

Half a dozen military folks from the nearby naval base, some with PTSD, are doing Laughter Yoga.

 

My name is Matti Anttila and as a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher, I am leading this session. Everyone seems to be having fun.

 

Kim, who is running a six week program for critical task personnel to help relieve PTSD had asked me to come in and lead a Laughter Yoga class for an hour as part of her program.

 

The “Invisibly Wounded”

 

She cautioned me to be a little slower and not be too dramatic in my movements so as not to trigger anything.

 

I know little about PTSD, just what I have read and how it can make life a living hell for those who have served the country and now are the “invisibly wounded.”

 

Kim is trying to make a difference in their lives and I am honoured to be asked to assist.

 

I am moved by how willing everyone is to jump in do these somewhat silly and crazy looking laughter exercises.

 

How Laughter Yoga Was Born

 

Laughter Yoga is the brainchild of an Indian medical doctor, Dr. Madan Kataria. He was preparing a paper on “Laughter is the Best Medicine” and found a wealth of scientific studies showing it had many health benefits.

 

So, he said if this is so good, why don’t we do it. In 1995, he along with four others started laughing a park in Mumbai, India. From that humble beginning, Laughter Yoga has grown to thousands of Laughter Yoga clubs not only in India, but around the world.

 

Laughter Yoga Transforms Lives

 

I took my training to be certified as a teacher in the summer of 2009 with Dr. Kataria.

 

Since then, my life has been transformed. My inner joy became more and more accessible and I have seen the same happen for countless others who have come to our club in Victoria over the intervening years.

 

In fact, Laughter Yoga caused me to deepen my connection to joy by writing a manual on joy. (More on that manual at the bottom of this letter)

 

PTSD Folks “Get” Laughter Yoga

 

As we continue our Laughter Yoga session, I can see to my delight that they “get it.” They are having fun like little kids.

 

We do the “Oh no, I made a mistake laughter.” This is where we release the mistake, our judgements about how bad we are for making a mistake, learn from it and move on.

 

We do “Red Light, Green Light” pretending to get stuck at red lights and laughing about it.

 

We pretend to hear a joke on our pretend cell phones, laugh at it and share it with others.

 

Grounding Sounding

 

A host of other exercises follows and then a laughter meditation and what I call “Grounding Sounding.”

 

This is a short series of sounds that allows integration of some of the bodily learning and unlearning and prepares us for re-entering the “regular” world after our child-like playfulness session.

 

After almost an hour of laughing, we sit up in a circle, I ask: “Questions, Comments, observations?”

 

Happy…and Confused!

 

One guy share how he never lets on, even to his family, how much stress and anxiety he is living with every moment. He puts on a brave face.

 

Now, after just one hour of Laughter Yoga, he tells us he feels happy for the first time he can remember. “And I’m confused.”

 

I’m not sure I understand what he means by being confused about feeling happiness. But I don’t have a chance to ask.

 

The gal next to him says: “I know exactly what you mean. I’m happy for the first time and I’m confused too.”

 

I knew how Laughter Yoga had made a positive difference in my own life and in the lives of other Laughter Yoga club members.

 

I was not prepared to see how quickly it could change the state of some of those who have the scourge of PTSD.

 

Kim followed up with another six week session in the fall of 2014 and again, we had positive results with the one hour Laughter Yoga session.

 

“If this is so good, why don’t we do it?”

 

That phrase from my Laughter Guru, Dr. Kataria bounces around in my head. He started with five people laughing in a park and it has created a world wide movement.

 

In fact, his mission has grown to “World Peace Through Laughter.” I am honoured and feel very much privileged to play my small part.

 

Pilot Program to Relieve PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, Worry, Fear and Stress

 

Now, Dr. Kataria’s inspiration leads me to create a pilot program to use Laughter Yoga to relieve PTSD. This program is for those who Kim calls “Critical Task” workers.

 

For “Critical Task” Workers

 

These could include military with PTSD, but also ambulance, fire and police, who also experience their share of trauma.

 

The program starts:

 

Thursday, February 12th for 6 weeks through March 19th.

 

If you know of someone who has PTSD, suffers from anxiety, depression, worry, fear and/or stress, let them know. Please. Pass this information on to them.

There is limited space. It is a small yoga studio, after all. So, pre-registration is necessary.

 

No Set Fee. Donations Accepted.

Jane (not her real name) who healed a long standing case of PTSD from childhood sexual abuse.

Every night before she went to sleep, she checked all the closets, locked every door and made sure a hammer and can of mace were near her bed, giving her the peace of mind to doze off. But sleep only led to more nightmares. ‘I was basically living in my own personal hell,’ she said. As a child no therapy helped her till later in life when she went to Cortina and tried his therapy.”

Answer: Keep in mind that, while we had participants who got benefits, we did not do follow up on how lasting the benefits may or may not have been. This pilot program should address that and allow for follow up and feedback.

Further, we will use other modalities, tools and techniques over the six week period. These should help to support and “anchor” the long term benefits.

Laughter Healing. Mastery Newsletter Update January 16, 2015

At the end of our Laughter Yoga sessions, we have a short period of “Grounding Sounding.” We sigh and say “AAAAH” a few times. This combined with some simple visualizations helps to get grounded again after the energetic laughing session.

 

Two nights ago, it was quite profound. One of our participants commented how she felt it was a deep healing.

 

I felt the same and am so grateful to have Laughter Yoga in my life.

December Already? Wait, I’m not ready. How did this happen?

 

Reviewing the year, I have to thank one and all. So much to be grateful for.

 

Laughter Yoga has been front and centre. Our regular sessions provide so much wonderful benefit. Laughter eases the tensions and stresses of daily life. Specifically, I continuously find that remembering to laugh for 10-15 minutes daily helps to set up the day and keep a smile on my face.

 

Laughter produces the feel good hormones like the endorphins. Smiling does the same.

 

It is a great lesson to know that I can smile internally no matter what is happening. That inner smile produces a sense of calm and empowerment that allows me to do my work (and play) more effectively. In fact, it helps to blur the line between work and play and THAT is fantastic!

 

The challenge is remembering to smile. We can do it ALL THE TIME. Do I? No, I am still working on it. I now have a little sticky note on my computer with a smiley face and the word “smile” to remind me. Making progress. 🙂

 

Another Certified Laughter Yoga Leader training took place this past weekend. What a joy to share this wonderful training. I am inspired by our participants and by the process of passing on this valuable information.

 

This Friday, I will lead a Qi Breath Playshop. (You are welcome if you find yourself in Victoria this Friday night)

 

This year also, I was invited to lead a Laughter Yoga Session as part of a six week therapeutic yoga program. Both times, it was well received. After the spring session, two military folks who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) shared how they felt happy for the first time that they can remember. They also shared that they were confused by that.

 

There is so much work to be done with our veterans who have PTSD. My heart goes out to them as I can’t even imagine the horror they may live with daily.

 

A recent article was posted in the Laughter Yoga Professional Zone where Laughter Yoga Leaders from around the world share ideas.

 

This article indicated that one session of Laughter Yoga with an individual with PTSD was able to help them dramatically.

 

I will be exploring how I can contribute positively using my Laughter Yoga experience.

 

The Toastmasters organization has enhanced my life since February this year.

 

My first ten talks are under my belt and I now have my Competent Communicator ranking.

 

I did not think I would enjoy Toastmasters so much. One of the reasons is because of the positive and supportive atmosphere.

 

That support from other Toastmasters really helps to embolden and encourage our path to leadership.

 

Keenly looking forward to another delightful Christmas and holiday season.

Laughter and Illness. Mastery Newsletter Update Nov. 26, 2014

Laughter and Illness

 

What a thrill ride I am having. Currently under the influence of some bugs. They are helping me to get in touch with and begin clearing out some crud from my system.

That is the way my herbal teacher/master Dr. Terry Willard taught me to think about flus and colds. It is the system (body/mind/spirit/emotions) cleansing itself of accumulated layers of “stuff.”

 

This could include toxins I have ingested in food, chlorine from my shower, pollution in the air I breathe and even toxic emotions from folks around me or from ancestral DNA. Whatever. The source is not so keenly important. I don’t need to invest huge amounts of time and energy to uncover abuse in my past or trauma from accidents (I did fall on my head on some cement during Aikido practice some decades ago, but that hasn’t affected me in any way… in any way… in any way… in any way…[smack]). 🙂

 

All that I need is to take the time to heal. Sometimes that is all we need is just time. Yes, some medicines may help the process (garlic, cayenne, lemon and a host of other goodies is what I am doing.)

 

As laughter is a daily practice for me, I chose to continue. It never fails to uplift me. Staying positive and not succumbing to negative feelings can be great for the healing process.

 

Another great tool is smiling. While that may seem like the last thing one may feel like doing when “under the weather,” it may be one of the most powerful healing tools in our arsenal.

Prisoners have to have one of the worst situations. Locked away, told what to do and when to do it every day.

If Laughter Yoga can work for prisoners in a Mexican jail to access their inner happiness, it just may work for you.

Laughter Helps in Cancer Prevention

 

Laughter Yoga works with the breath to open up to fuller and healthier breathing.

 

Dr. Otto Warburg, the President of the Institute of Cell Physiology and two times a Nobel Prize winner, says this:

 

“Deep breathing techniques increase oxygen to the cells and are the most important factors in living a disease-free and energetic life. When the cells get enough oxygen, cancer will not and cannot occur.”

 

In fact, Laughter Yoga was inspired by a response to disease by an enlightened patient.

 

Founder Dr. Madan Kataria read about Norman Cousins who laughed himself back to health.

 

Cousins was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a painful form of arthritis.

 

Many die from this disease. The pain can be so great that sleep can become impossible.

 

Cousins decided to go out laughing!

 

So, he brought in Marx Brothers movies into his hospital room and started laughing.

 

Norman Cousins laughed himself back to health

“Told that he had little chance of surviving, Cousins developed a recovery program incorporating megadoses of Vitamin C, along with a positive attitude, love, faith, hope, and laughter induced by Marx Brothers films.

 

“I made the joyous discovery that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me at least two hours of pain-free sleep,” he reported. “When the pain-killing effect of the laughter wore off, we would switch on the motion picture projector again and not infrequently, it would lead to another pain-free interval.”

A Note re the “cost” of Certified Laughter Yoga Leader Training.

 

Your investment is $397. There is usually a $50 early bird discount.

Should you choose to pursue Laughter Yoga as a part time business, You may soon recover that.

Certified Laughter Yoga Leaders will often have a non profit club. In my club, I tell participants that Laughter Yoga is free or by donation. There is no requirement to pay as we don’t want anyone to stay away because of financial concerns.

I also say the suggested donation is $5 to $15. I average about $7 per person as a result.

Last week, $70 in donations were made.

And that is just the donation non profit side of Laughter Yoga.

If you go out and get paid engagements, that is a different story.

My corporate rate is $550.00 an hour and the non profit rate is $180.00 an hour. These rates are negotiable, of course, but it is always wise to start the negotiations at a decent rate for yourself.

Even if you do a few non profits, they will often have SOMETHING in the kitty for speakers. I have done session for free (rarely) and as a little as $90. More often it is the $180 rate.

Once, I did 3 one hour session in one day for an educational institution at $250 for each session. That was a $750.00 day.

So, what is called a “cost,” is really an investment in your future. An investment that can pay high dividends.

I used to be a financial advisor. If you have a financial investment, a decent dividend is 3-5%, somewhat higher for riskier situations. On $397, that would be $11.91 to $19.85 per year.

With a Certified Laughter Yoga designation and an entrepreneurial approach, you can choose to create an ongoing business that can produce hundreds of percent return on your initial outlay.

Release, release, my Tai Chi master repeated.

 

Slowly, slowly, it starts to resonate, what he meant.

 

Softness conquers hardness. Yin overcomes Yang. The female principle, the yielding, is superior to the male principle.

 

Both are essential. Yet we have somehow become addicted to one more than the other.

 

How to break that addiction? The addiction to competition, to aggression and the resulting conflict, violence and war.

 

How to nourish the Yin principle? How to balance the Yin and Yang so that we have the best qualities of each?

 

Is it not much the same as the acid/alkaline balance in the body. Many may be too acidic.

 

Some have realized that and gone overboard toward the alkaline. There is a condition, I am told, called alkalosis. This is where an individual’s body is too alkaline.

 

We tend to be extremists…one end of the spectrum or the other.

 

In the same way, do we not need to guard against going overboard toward the Yin?

 

Balance, balance, toujours balance.

Are You a Man Who Makes Frequent Bathroom Trips?

 

Two weeks of a herbal tea has helped me.

 

Bell LifeStyle Products had “Prostate Ezee Flow Tea #4A” on the shelf at my local health store.

 

I had been getting some relief from other supplement combinations, but this one caught my eye because of the bold print: MUST HELP OR MONEY REFUNDED.

They say give it two weeks and sure enough, two weeks later, I slept through the night. Heaven is 6 straight hours without a bathroom trip!
